Knowing when to move on in relationships By: Amanda Morrison
W
hen a re-run of Housewives just won’t do, I spend my Sabbath afternoon resting to a sleepy little show on HGTV called House Hunters. In keeping with today’s trend of voyeuristic entertainment, the premise allows viewers to accompany strangers as they search for the home that “has it all.” What especially piques my interest is the forethought buyers address in their wish list and how it transposes to the address purchased. As homebuyers, to find what we want, we first have to know what we are looking for. Of our lifetime, it is reasonable to conclude that a home is our single most significant purchase, and in relationships, becoming non-single through marriage is an even greater purchase as a mortgage of the heart. So why is it we can clearly target specific criteria in modern real estate and be so inarticulate with our goals in modern dating? In the age of our grandparents, houses and marriage partners were lived in and with for the duration. On the contrary, our generation has embraced both the starter home and the starter marriage. We choose temporary satisfaction over longterm commitment and while it may not be our happy ending, it can have a cheerful impact on the economy. Becoming real about the dysfunction of our personal business is good for the business of real estate!
Downsizing It was five years ago when I found myself in this very
situation, seeking to purchase a home, minus a partner. Moving on from who I once believed was the man of my dreams also meant moving from my custom dream home. Sold at list price, we split the profit and so were we. Being minus a co-signer, I quickly remodeled my view of the perfect home and carefully searched for a place. Unlike divorce, the new wish list became much simpler: Budget… Is it worth the price that I can afford? Location… Is this place safe? Size… Will there be enough room for me?
Fixer Uppers Ultimately, I’ve used the same philosophy in relationships as I did when house hunting – look for the potential. This led me to a house with good bones that simply needed my styling and a few accessories. The result: I have a lovely home and a loveless dating life. Although I admit, I haven’t given up on this thinking. You see, there was something magical when I found a house that met seemingly impossible criteria. Divine indeed that my antique church pew fit in the breakfast room, and the separate formal dining room was perfectly sized for my heirloom claw foot table and treasured buffet. Not only was it within my price range, the fourth bedroom off the master was ideal for my office. The catch.... It was not visually attractive! The color scheme was hunter green, navy blue and burgundy,
and there was wall paper – lots of bad, busy to the point of dizziness paper adhered in just about every other room. However, I was not reluctant to say “I do” to the mortgage because my clearly defined, non-negotiable list made the impending sweat equity a minor consideration. Just as I’d imagined, peeling off the layers of tacky paper revealed smooth walls prime for painting in the hue of my choice. My home exceeds what I thought I could do alone and for that it gave me inspiration. Liking the overall structure gave me the desire to enliven its aesthetic warmth and charm. This tactic in dating assumes more risk when separating the surface issues from a cracked foundation. However, great love is found where someone accepts you as you are and encourages you towards your best. Be cautious not to make an emotional purchase and hold steadfast to your personal desires or else you may end up in a courtship cul-de-sac.
Punch List The best episodes of House Hunters involve couples who don’t agree on what they’re looking for. Predictably, he wants the affordable disrepair with a basement and she wants the curb appealing move-in-ready with the granite island. As tensions flair, great television begins as we witness the art of compromise. Knowing what you want equally means knowing what you don’t want and where you’re willing to bend. It’s one thing to choose a home with laminate when you really wanted solid surface, but when our hearts are involved we should never settle for the fake imitation. Perhaps it would be best to logically consider my house hunting criteria in my dating life: Budget… Is HE worth the price I can afford? Location… Does HE make me feel safe? Size… Will there be enough room for me in HIS life? No, mortgages don’t call, pick us up and take us to dinner. We make the calculated, time consuming choice to go into escrow or walk away from the deal. If your gut says no to the questions above, be bold enough to move on. The house and the man for you may be just around the corner. Or perhaps like me, you are content for now to wake up single feeling good to have found the place where you belong. The place you found all on your own.

ORGANIZE YOUR LIFE! For someone with limited downtime, you need to be able to fi nd your family budget or credit card receipts at a moment’s notice. By implementing the following tips, you can continue your reign as a one-woman wonder.
ORGANIZE Say goodbye to sticky notes, scraps of paper and writing your grocery list on the back of your hand. To achieve optimal organization of your schedule, start by buying a universal planner for both your professional and personal life. Having your meetings, to do list and personal appointments in one place will cut down on confusion. Assort your tasks in order of importance, and be sure to leave space for the unexpected.
SYSTEMIZE Cutting down on wasted time and space has become a revolution in the workplace. Systemize your desk by using baskets for incoming and outgoing mail, daily tasks, papers to file, projects, etc. Use your planner to write down all appointments and avoid a tangle of sticky notes. If space is an issue, consider hanging up pictures of family members rather than having a frame sitting on your desk. Throw away all papers that you no longer need, and use an organizer for pens, paper clips, staples, etc.
PRIORITIZE It’s easy to be overwhelmed by email overflow. Rather than allow your inbox become an influx of clutter, arrange it to prioritize all incoming mail. First, delete all emails you no longer need or have attachments that you’ve already saved. Unsubscribe to email lists you do not want to be a part of. Lastly, set up labeled folders in which you will transfer your emails that need immediate attention, less important, fun mail, etc.
CATEGORIZE Save your personal information on a separate hard drive, or file it in your home office/bedroom, so it is easily accessible when needed. These categories may include your finances, such as credit card numbers, receipts, a budget and bank account numbers; security, such as emergency phone numbers and passports; and health, such as medical and dental records for you and your family. For more confidential files, such as birth certificates, stocks, bonds and car titles, consider purchasing a safety deposit box.

Meet Fishing’s Elite

H
is reality is the dream of businessmen everywhere who stare from their corner office window with visions of trading their suit for shorts and Mont Blanc for an Abu Garcia. For Pro Angler Keith Poche (pronounced “Poe-shay”), bass fishing is his business, the corner of his boat is his office and he is fast becoming a force to reckon with in the space of pro tournament fishing. His passion to profession story is woven by threads of positive thinking amidst adversity. To uncover what led him toward a fishing career, we must first go back to the parish of Natchitoches in Northwest Louisiana where Poche is from. He grew up in a broken home, his parents having split when he was a young boy. While some children use divorce to excuse their bad behavior, this circumstance allowed Keith to discover his destiny. Fiercely independent, he would visit his father and sneak off to the pond. Unsupervised, an innate skill took over his young spirit, and he taught himself how to fish.
Keith reminisced, “Those summers at my Dad’s, I stayed on the water. My cousin would get mad at me because I would wake him up to go with me, but he didn’t want to go as much as I did.” The determination and work ethic he developed in adolescence would be most pivotal during his college years. It was for football and not fishing when this Louisiana boy became a Troy, Alabama man. Recruited as a Trojan running back, a left shoulder injury during his second season required surgery and forced him off of the field. While this would devastate most college athletes, Poche merely adapted and spent his free time fishing. Despite the fact his arm was in a sling, the undeterred angler would go to L&L Lakes, where he fatefully met his mentor Daniel Sanders who encouraged him to participate in his first tournament. “It was small, like seven boats, seven people, but just the thrill and excitement of the competition fishing, [for me] it just took off,” said Keith. “It was that particular moment
at that county lake that changed my life forever.” For RSVP, it was in a particular moment during his cover photo shoot, at that panache neighborhood lake at The Waters, where we met the career angler and fatefully observed the humble tenacity that forever writes his life’s story. Promptly arriving on location, he readily launched his Skeeter FX 20 boat onto the water, his smile as brilliant as the colorful sponsor logos decorating its outer shell. His impressive casting technique is equally exciting to watch and after only minutes of fishing, he reeled one in, allowing our photographer to capture what we believed to be a photo worthy of our imagined cover. Enamored by the pro’s photogenic quality, we naively failed to consider the size quality of the snapshot’s secondary, scaly subject. That’s when Keith kindly announced he “thought we could do better,” so we obliged his expert request to fish for a “cover-worthy bass.”

As dockside spectators, he gave us much more than the ideal photo for this issue’s front. Zigzagging along the water, powered by a Yamaha 250 SHO motor, we were awestruck by his natural inclination. Almost knowingly, as if the fish were speaking to him, his second catch of the day (released long before this issue) was large enough to represent his skill and accompany him on the RSVP cover. Having witnessed his fervent drive, it’s no wonder sought after brands such as Costa Del Mar and Net Bait have aligned with Poche. After following his first rookie season as a pro, Bonnie Plants smartly reconsidered a proposal and partnered as the primary sponsor for his 2011 tournament season. Keith explained, “I personally knocked on the doors of over 100 companies and only a few came through.” Instead of focusing on the denied opportunity, he persevered with the mentality that, “If you reach out to everyone, hopefully something will happen.” He admits that it was actually a moment where he lost a tournament when a fish broke his line that amped his desire to compete. The loss was bittersweet, but almost having won was enough for him to realize that he could. Never resting on his laurels, Keith continues to hone his skill wherever opportunity and bass fish may strike. “It’s a job,” he quickly replied when asked the misconception of his sport. “From sun up to sun down, battling all sorts of weather, to being on your feet all day… from daylight to dark, there’s no resting in hotels [at tournaments], I’m practicing,” he explained. Poche also takes his grueling schedule in stride. This year alone, he will compete in more than 15 tournaments, encompassing eight states in only four months. His combination of a strong work ethic and quiet resolve find him both on the road and the fast track within a category unattainable for most. Out of 100 professionals, in only his second year as a Bassmaster Elite, Keith was ranked 22nd overall at press time. The week before at Alabama’s Lake Pickwick, he did not give up on a questionable spot and intuitive perserverance led him to a fourth place finish and the 11th place score overall. The rankings are cumulative and can change as fast as the conditions he fishes in, so be sure to follow his standings throughout the season.

A
s couples make the transition from single life to married life, most have thought it was the biggest adjustment they would ever make. Making decisions together, finances merging, families converging—it can be overwhelming to say the least. Typically right when everything begins to smooth out and slow down in your new marriage is when that EPT shows you two lines instead of one. Hello! And you thought getting married was an adjustment…boy are you in for it! The best part about welcoming a baby and starting your family of three is that you and your partner are in it together. Sure there may be times when Dad wants to walk both you and the baby out to the front porch and close that door behind you. And of course that golf game he asked to play on Saturday doesn’t look like such a bad idea at times. But the truth always prevails that two is better than one when it comes to raising a baby. Through the difficulties that a new little bundle will add to your marriage, comes joy that you never thought you would know. The times that are the hardest turn out to be the times that build you up the most.

Being parents to two boys is something that has not (and will not) make us experts, but it does make our lives real—just like yours. Here are a few things that we have found make our day-to-day a little bit sunnier… 1) Don’t forget—before the children it was just the two of you: As hard as it is to say and act upon, you have to keep your marriage strong before anything else. If you take the time to be together, just the two of you, your lives (and your children) will be more enriched for it. Even 30 minutes at a Mexican restaurant totally counts!!! If you can’t get a night out, have take-out over candlelight. 2) Take turns: Everyone needs a break now and then. It is crucial to take turns on duties with your children. One week, you’re on bath duty, the next week, your husband is on dinner. Small exchanges like that will make both of you feel like you’re doing your part and therefore eliminate tension or bitterness if you are the one feeling stretched too thin.
3) Do a little extra: This may seem contradictory to #2, but the best surprise as a Mom or Dad is the one you didn’t ask for help with. Dads, throw the laundry in the dryer and fold what was already in there so Mom can catch the tail end of Dancing with the Stars. Not only will she be extremely grateful for the moment of peace with the TV, but she’ll get a fabulous surprise after the kids are asleep and she goes to finish the laundry. The smallest acts of duty are multiplied when you don’t have to ask for them to be done.
The family that prays together, stays together: It’s cliché, I know! But having

faith at the center of your marriage is where it all begins. Spirituality is healing no matter what a family will face. 5) Take time for YOU: Each parent needs to be given time to do things they want to do, separate from your family life. Hunting season doesn’t last forever—let him stay Friday night with the guys and do…whatever it is they do. In turn, a mani-pedi is a small exchange on a Saturday afternoon for a Mommy who will return rejuvenated and with a new dose of patience for whatever the rest of the day may hold. These short times away from the family give each of you the jump start you need. 6) Stay positive: It’s easy to unload all the negative parts of the day on your spouse as you converge together at the end of each day. The baby spit up… he threw a tantrum in the grocery store again…the usual happenings of each day with children are not all roses. But the best thing you can do when your spouse asks you how your day was is tell him the good things that happened. You finally filled up your punch card at California Yogurt Kraze! The children happened to be asleep at the same time for an entire hour! Even the smallest pieces of good news lift your spirits when you say them out loud or have them said to you. My marriage and family life are the same as anyone else’s—a work in progress!! Certainly six little pieces of advice are not going to make any family perfect, but I hope these tips will help your marriage with young children run as smoothly as possible. As long as you stick together and remember the reasons why you love your spouse, things always have a way of working out. From my crazy household to yours, I wish you the best of luck!

W
e gather for a variety of reasons. Sometimes for a feast or wedding, sometimes to celebrate those embarking on a milestone, and other times to celebrate a birth or to honor those who gave us life. With May giving many graduates the countdown to put on their gowns and toss their caps, and May and June being the months we honor our mothers and fathers, there are plenty of reasons to gather and celebrate the ones we love. In today’s fast-paced world, we often get so busy that we don’t make the time to show support and appreciation for friends and family, but in the grand scheme of things… are we doing the things that are most important? My grandmother who lives in North Carolina turned 90 last month. Personally, it was the worst possible time for me to take a road trip to spend the weekend away. As embarrassed as I am to share this, I wrestled for many days over not going and built a list of about 20 reasons why I “couldn’t” or “shouldn’t” go. In writing this article and thinking about my personal celebrations and family traditions, I re-evaluated my priorities and values. I felt so convicted that I ever considered skipping this special moment in my grandmother’s life. The weekend was one of great family fun and togetherness and it will forever be imprinted on my heart, and the decision to go is one I will never regret. For those of you like me who get several graduation and wedding invitations at once and simply make the list of checks to write, join me in taking it to a new level.

hile out driving in the comfort of my car’s AC, I’ll sometimes spot those ultra dedicated fitness aficionados outside running on a sizzling summer day and think to myself, “I need to do that.” But if the temperature is above 80 degrees, I can count on one hand how many times I’ve actually managed the discipline. When it comes to the infamous Alabama late spring or summer, I’m an indoor gym kind of girl. But if you are burnt out on treadmills and dumbbells and are looking for a way to get outdoor exercise without boiling, take it to the water. It is a well-known truth that swimming is one of the best forms of exercise; but if you aren’t an advocate of laps, take advantage of the fact that we are literally surrounded by water. We have the ripples of Lake Martin beckoning, the rapids of the Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers looming nearby, and the waves of the Gulf only a day-trip away. With nature’s refreshment at our fingertips, you can dually cool off and stay active, despite the liquefying warmth. Set aside a Saturday to round up your troops, be it family or friends, and trek to the river for a liquid adventure. The more experienced paddlers tend to tackle the Tallapoosa, as certain parts of the river house rapids that are classified as IIIV. The family-friendly Coosa has two rentals, Coosa River Adventures and Coosa Outdoor Center, and both provide daily rentals, experienced guides and a shuttle to the starting
point, making the trip trouble-free for guests. You can select to stay mostly above water in a canoe (seats 2-3), or go for a single or double kayak. Once you begin your journey, you’ll come across various vantage points – usually oversized rocks sprawling mid-river – to take a break, grab some sun or refuel. The ride is mostly tranquil with a constant flow, but you will sporadically encounter rapids – including Moccasin Gap, a class III. Hold on, this one will be a bumpy ride. Your overall river running experience should take about 3-4 hours, and you will be left tanned, rejuvenated and maybe even sore from the paddling. If water skiing or tubing is more your speed, Lake Martin is just a short drive up the road. If you own a lakeside condo or house, a mini weekend retreat is a perfect way to briefly escape the bustle of the city. If you aren’t a Lake Martin home/boat owner, the lake harbors several boat rentals, pending the captain of your crew has a boating license. Check out The Ridge (www.russellmarine.net) or Harbor Point Marina (www.harborpointe.net). Port from a public dock, and with a little courage, you will be slicing the water in no time. Rather than spending hours in a gym lifting weights on a beautiful afternoon, the restorative River Region rivers or lake will help you to stay active while having a blast with loved ones. After his parents instilled in him the values of humility, openmindedness and hard work at a young age, and with the tutelage of former Director of Planning Ken Groves, Chad is adept at undertaking such an important role in the city’s future. Striving to combine Montgomery’s revered history with modern renovations, Chad and his team are working toward helping Montgomery emerge as a leading city in the South. Even with such an extraordinary job responsibility, the proud father of four admits that family is of utmost importance, and cherishes his title as both a husband and father. The self-proclaimed Top Chef fanatic loves the outdoors, and spends his free time playing tennis, on a beach or eating at any restaurant with an outside patio.
CALVIN JOHNSON A firm believer in the unbounded potential of Montgomery, Calvin Johnson, a real property appraiser with the Montgomery County Revenue, takes great pride in giving value to our city. With more than a decade of management and administrative experience, the University of Alabama graduate promotes the growth and development of the Montgomery community. Dedicated to both professional and spiritual leadership, the former marine is also involved with EMERGE Montgomery, is an ordained minister and a longtime volunteer for local charities, including Partners in Education and School Clean-Up. He is a graduate of the Emerge Tourchbearers leadership Class I and the Alabama Leadership Iniative. When he finds a break in his eventful schedule, the proud father can be found spending time with his wife Tammy, their four children and dog Bentley. SPRINGNA ZHAO Ying “Springna” Zhao, founder of NEXT Financial Group, is a woman on a mission. Not only does she offer clients expert financial consulting, Springna is dedicated to making a positive impact in Montgomery, and has organized the women’s club W.O.W. (Women of the World) and hosts a variety of financial workshops. After receiving dual bachelor degrees in diplomacy and English, the China native left her home country for the River Region, where she completed her masters in business administration from Auburn University at Montgomery. With a rich professional history that includes serving as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch and as an assistant to Gov. Bob Riley, Springna went out on her own in 2009 to launch her own consulting firm. Although she has been in the United States since 2004, Springna brought pieces of her culture with her, and has performed traditional Chinese dance at the Montgomery Area Council on Ageing for the past six years. Now a greatly successful business owner, Springna’s inspiration originated in elementary school with a teacher that taught her, “Dreaming alone is not enough to achieve your dreams – you need action and a plan.”

THOMAS CREWS A lifelong advocate of the importance of hard work and ethics, Thomas Crews has found great success as a broker with Commercial Properties, Inc. Subsequent upon graduating from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in logistics,Thomas joined his family business before deciding to take a career leap and enter commercial real estate. From there, he obtained his real estate license and sharpened his skills at Saunders Realty Commercial Division before acquiring his current position. The recreational golfer takes pride in delivering the best possible terms for his clients, and attributes his professional achievements to the trust placed in him by the community. Outside of business hours, Thomas is actively involved in the community as a member of the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery, and is a volunteer with Family Promise and the Wounded Veteran Hunt. The Auburn alum can also be found cheering on his alma mater on the football field, or with wife Katie and their “baby,” a labradoodle named Riley.
JILLA WEBB For singing sensation Jilla Webb, thriving in the music industry runs in her family. Following in the footsteps of her mother, a widely successful performer and the lead vocalist in the Harry James Orchestra, Jilla has been captivating audiences across the country from Vegas to Nashville, and has even been the voice on nationally syndicated shows such as Regis and Kathy Lee and Dharma and Greg. Although she is a hit on the microphone, Jilla’s ambition hasn’t allowed her to stop there. While currently working toward her master’s degree in post secondary education in the music industry at Troy University Montgomery, the songstress is also sharing her love for music as a voice coach for rising stars. With plans to design and produce music camps this summer, it was Jilla’s decision to gain experience in every facet of the music business that has made her such a success off the stage as well. NICK FRONTIERO Seasoned musician Nick Frontiero has been raising his voice across the Southeast for more than a decade, performing his unique sound both locally and regionally. Now the owner of Nick Frontiero Productions, a media production company, the Prattville High School graduate began his career in media broadcasting at Cumulus Broadcasting of Montgomery, where he served as the assistant production director for three years. Although his career is now flourishing behind the scenes, Nick hasn’t given up the stage. He is a member of four rocking local bands, a former “Battle of the Bands” winner and has even performed at Jubilee CityFest with band “For the Drive Home.” In addition to running his own production studio, Nick is currently developing a party cover band, “The Sellouts,” which is scheduled to hit the stage this fall, covering contemporary and past pop hits. While he is still building his brand, Nick finds inspiration in every aspect of his life, and we have no doubt that he will continue to find success!
DAWN OWENS Descended from a clan of educators, Dawn Owens is continuing her family legacy in the Montgomery Public School system. As the pre-k program director for the Montgomery Education Foundation, the former kindergarten teacher works to develop optimal pre-k programs, providing mentoring for the teachers and superior resources for the classrooms. Dawn’s commitment to strengthening the pre-k programs and extending opportunities for local children stems from her own passion for being a mother. “My children influence my work daily because I want the best for them, and I believe I can’t want the best for them without wanting the best for every child.” With three young boys at home, the Alabama State Graduate still manages to immerse herself in a number of local charities and organizations, including Partners in Education, Reading on Wheels, EMERGE Montgomery and Junior League. But when it comes to her free time, Dawn admits that even though she loves to travel, bake and read, her most treasured pastime of all is spending quality time with her family.

JASON RASH Professional personal trainer Jason Rash, founder and CEO of MOTIV8 Bootcamps, left a steady career to chase his dream. After 12 years with a local engineering firm, the fitness guru successfully turned his passion into his profession, and is now an Aerobics and Fitness Association of America certified trainer at Fitness South, Anytime Fitness and the Montgomery Country Club. His swift career switch turned out to be a smashing success, leaving Jason thrilled with the chance to make a difference in people’s lives. In addition to offering a diverse range of indoor and outdoor exercises, Jason aspires to instill hope in his clients and help make positive life changes. “The most amazing thing that I do is help people believe in themselves again,” adds the former musician. Jason admits that his success would not have been possible without the steadfast support from his wife Brooke, who, despite the downward economy, never stopped believing in his entrepreneurial spirit.
PATRICK SKELTON In addition to long bringing Montgomery a polished fine dining experience, Patrick Skelton, general manager and owner of the Chop House at Vintage Year, is expanding the city’s culinary landscape with the brand new Midtown Pizza Kitchen. A Montgomery native, Patrick returned to our capital city upon completing his bachelor’s degree in film from Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. Now the owner of two delectable dining destinations, Patrick began his career in the restaurant business more than 15 years ago as a dishwasher at The Vintage Year. After coming full circle and working every position from top to bottom, Patrick acquired the knowledge to achieve success in what can be a dicey, ever-changing business. The St. James High School graduate is delighted with the ability to bring his hometown community the best possible cuisine, service and atmosphere. As if running two restaurants doesn’t keep him busy enough, the new dad spends his few free moments raising 14-month-old son Tristan with wife Brianna or shooting hoops with his basketball group at the downtown YMCA.
MELISSA McKINNEY The devout passion and energy in Melissa McKinney, general assignment reporter at WSFA 12 News, clearly shows in her quest to bring the River Region immediate and truthful news. Before joining the Montgomery affiliate in 2009, the young journalist spent time at the WSFA 12 News Dothan bureau after receiving her bachelor’s degree in broadcast news from the University of Georgia. Devoted to her career as a reporter, Melissa is honored to be granted the voice to tell the stories of others and strives to make a difference in the community. “I love being able to get out of the building and meet the people that make up this great city ... each day and each story is different.” Having grown up in Atlanta, Melissa has quickly woven herself into the culture of Montgomery and staunchly supports the city’s progress; she serves on the March of Dimes Board of Directors, runs local marathons and even sings in her church’s worship band. When she can gather the time, the world traveler polishes her piano and cello playing skills, and will take any opportunity to visit another country.

The Fab Four By: Kim Traff The Fab Four returned to the MPAC with another sold out show. This is my second time seeing this amazing Beatles Tribute Band, and although I have seen Paul McCartney live, I would say this show lists in the top ten of the best performances I have seen. Sure, the venue makes all the difference and it being performed in the beautiful Montgomery Performing Arts Centre certainly helps the experience.

“Romeo & Juliet” By: Kristi Gates The ultimate tale of love and loss set the stage for the Montgomery Ballet’s first performance at the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre. Performing a tale so beloved and distinguished as Romeo and Juliet could be considered a challenge, but it was one that every dancer on stage was more than ready for. The first scene, which focused on the two families – the Capulets and Montagues – set the tone for the rest of the evening. Never before has a fight scene seemed so elegant and powerful at the same time. From that point, it’s a story that everyone knows, but played out in a unique and mesmerizing way. From their first sighting of each other, Romeo and Juliet’s interest in each other is apparent. Special guest Greta Lambert’s nuanced voice work provided insight into pivotal turns in the story, but throughout the production, the dancers’ ability to flawlessly convey the feelings of Romeo and Juliet even though they did not speak was a testament to both their acting and dancing abilities. Complimented by a talented and capable supporting cast, dancing was indeed the name of the game. Amidst the commanding scenery, Juliet’s graceful and effortless lilt blended perfectly with Romeo’s power and strength to create a sense of tender passion. Although the tale of Romeo and Juliet ended tragically, the audience couldn’t help leaving this production feeling as if they had been part of a special treat.

The Fab Four covers more than 200 Beatles songs, including many favorites such as Penny Lane, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, She Loves You,Twist and Shout, I Want To Hold Your Hand,Yellow Submarine, Yesterday, Here Comes The Sun, Imagine, Revolution and more. The cast, Ron McNeil (John Lennon), Ardy Saraf (Paul McCartney), Gavin Pring (George Harrison) and Rolo Sandova (Ringo Starr), were meticulous and successful in keeping the historical integrity of the original performances of The Beatles. All of their music is live and their performances are spot on, with amazing attention to nuance and detail. They dress and talk like The Beatles and cover the band chronologically with three signature Beatles wardrobe changes spanning 1963-1966, then the psychedelic era from 19661967 and finally the Vietnam War (part of it) and Beatles breakup era from 1967-1970. And yes, even Ed Sullivan is there – well, impressionist Jerry Hoban, with plenty of jokey showmanship for the entire audience. One of the better effects that brought emotion to the audience is the real black and white footage of performances by The Beatles and emotional fans (women obsessing and crying) that accompanied several of the songs. While there was plenty of laughter, clapping and dancing, there were some very moving and sincere moments. The most memorable was when Ron McNeil as John Lennon took the stage stretching to the solo years and said, “It seems we kill off our heroes,” then moved to the piano to perform a truly touching and haunting version of “Imagine.” Finishing with an all time favorite, “Hey Jude,” was a perfect ending to a wonderful performance. The Fab Four deserves the best grade possible. A+

Dating, with children By Amanda Zaremba
T
his crazy thing happens when you find yourself divorced from one person, and a few months later, desire to spend time with someone of the opposite sex. Obviously this is a natural occurrence (unless you are made of icicles), but wanting to “get out there” and being able to are two totally different things. As if dating wasn’t hard enough back when you were “finding yourself ” (whatever that really means), you didn’t completely grasp the concept of personal space, and your group of friends still contained that overly dramatic girl that no one, including guys, wanted to hang around, the good news is that it just got worse. Way worse. Because now, you have something known as “offspring.” Best news for me? I have two. Two very young, very needy (as small children are), high energy, unpredictable, rebels for children. Dating? Ha! Try taking a shower without breaking up a fight over Legos from behind the shower curtain. Not to psyche myself out, but I’ve prepared a few scenarios in which dating after marriage and with children sounds like the most impossible thing I’ll ever attempt.
Custody Guy meets girl. Girl likes guy. Guy asks girl out. Girl would love to! But only every other weekend. Yes, that sounds not too bad, right? Two weeks isn’t FOREVER. Well, say you meet said person on the cusp of a custodial period. They text or call, email and Facebook friend you, and the poor sucker has to wait two ENTIRE weeks before he can even get a first date. That date goes well? GREAT! Wait two more weeks and you can have another. Ugh.

“Doing Lunch” The obvious answer to this would be to see said person during your custodial periods. No-brainer right? Wrong. Do you bring the children along? I mean, for me, I don’t have any other options. I’m not dripping in babysitters or grandparents, so if I want to have a quick outing with a gentlemen then that means we have to go somewhere with child. The best part of this scenario is when the child or children does what my kids do in an eating establishment – act like banshees. Why has happiness no second spring?” Who among us doesn’t equate the weather this time of year with happiness? The River Region has emerged refreshed from its winter’s nap, and nature bursts with brilliant life. The air carries a million melodies, both human and animal. The Boys of Summer return to Biscuits Stadium and, a couple of hours away, to Turner Field as well. Last (but not least), May brings a birthday for this humble columnist. Therefore celebrate along with the Triple-L as we bring the seasonal heat (metaphorically speaking) in the form of great movies, music and websites for those moments when you find yourself indoors.

Album, Alternative Rock The coolest band alive since 2001 returns for their first new album since 2006’s First Impressions of Earth. Whereas Impressions found the New York indie superstars adding studio sheen to their familiar jagged-rock hooks and front-man Julian Casablancas’ laconic vocals, Angles finds the band turning their back on their hugely influential 2001 album, Is This It?, and adding a more 80s-friendly electronic spin to the music. It doesn’t always work, but on songs like “Macchu Picchu,” “Two Kinds of Happiness” and “Life is Simple in the Moonlight,” it works so brilliantly that you’re surprised they never thought of it before. It’s been a decade since The Strokes (and to a much lesser extent, The Killers) re-invented alternative music. If you missed them before, embrace them now via iTunes.

Oh, and the author of this article contributes music, TV and movie reviews as well, so you really don’t have a reason not to give it a shot.

Normally the chronicler of a special brand of post-collegiate adolescence by men behaving badly, Apatow widens the field to the fairer sex for this one, embracing the equality of letting women act in a way just as vulgar, rude and asinine as their male counterparts. Poetry Slam – In April, Bridge Builders Alabama teamed up with the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts to offer high school students in the River Region a chance to express themselves through art and poetry. The BBAL/MMFA Poetry Slam Workshop took place every Thursday evening in April. The four-week learning series culminated on April 28 when students competed against each other at Montgomery’s first artinfused youth poetry slam! The event, opened to the public, was a hit!
La Fete – Chandeliers, candelabras and crystals set the stage for La Fete to welcome guests to the Garrett Coliseum to celebrate everything Southern. The women’s mystic society celebrated its 52nd annual ball with the theme “A Southern Soirée.” More than 120 members, along with honorary members and past queens, were in attendance to truly treasure those traditions that are Southern. Guests danced throughout the evening to the sounds of Az-IzZ from Atlanta, Georgia. A popular old-fashioned saying is, “Behind every great man is a great woman.” In our contemporary times, it might be more accurate to say that, “Beside every great man is a great woman.” Such is the case for singer/musician Zac Martin, who didn’t consider music as more than a passionate diversion until he met his wife, Lindsey. Today, we have Lindsey Martin to thank for the brilliant acoustic stylings of her husband, who began his career in Mobile, Alabama. After gaining popularity in that local scene, Zac has performed throughout the Southeast in venues from Alabama to Florida to Mississippi. Additionally, Zac has even lived and performed in South America. Drawing on an eclectic variety of styles, including blues, jazz and folk, Zac also performs with Lindsey, even as the lead singer/guitarist for a new band called Straighten Up Houston.
RSVP: So who first inspired you to become a musician, Zac? Zac: My parents were always big music fans, and I think they instilled that in me pretty young. The first instrument I took seriously, I think, was the saxophone when I was about 12 years old, and since then, I’ve pretty much always been playing something, mostly guitar. I really didn’t think about making it more than a hobby until I met my wife, Lindsey. She had been playing an open mic night in Mobile and was looking for someone to help her fill a gig spot. A couple of friends introduced us and it turned out to be the most important day in my life. Now I’m married with a daughter and have been performing ever since. RSVP: Who do you perform with these days?

RSVP sat down with Zac to discuss how his music went from a pleasurable pastime to a full-on career:
Zac: Right now, I’m still playing solo acoustic gigs a lot, and my wife and I play as an acoustic duo. I’m also the lead singer/guitarist for a new band called Straighten Up Houston. I work at Capitol Music with our drummer, Andy Martin, and he knew Kevin Morrison already, who is our bass player. So far, we’ve been doing a few local shows with acoustic guitar and drums, but we’re getting things in order to start playing more regional shows this summer. RSVP: Who was the first artist you can remember listening to that made you want to be a career musician? Zac: Probably David Gilmour [of Pink Floyd]. Hearing how tasteful electric guitar could be really pushed me to start learning as much as I could. I played guitar before, but I think hearing him play was what pushed me to kind of drop everything else and play a lot of music. RSVP: What musicians and bands do you consider your primary musical influences?

Zac: That’s such a tough question. Early on, I got into Pink Floyd because they had such a diverse blend of styles. That kind of led me in a lot of directions musically, from rock to blues to jazz. A few others are probably pretty common among acoustic players, like Dave Matthews, Dispatch, John Mayer and Ben Harper. Now I pretty much try to take something from everything that I listen to. RSVP: What contemporary artists do you listen to? Zac: My favorite bands right now are probably the Black Keys and the Avett Brothers. They’re the two bands that I’d love to get a chance to see live.

RSVP: What’s on your iPod right now? Zac: Right now I’ve got a ton of Avett Brothers, The Black Keys, The Broken Bells, Mumford and Sons, Ray LaMontagne and Muse. And I haven’t heard the full album yet, but the new single from The Strokes, “Under Cover of Darkness,” is probably my favorite song right now. RSVP:What artists outside of music have influenced your work? Zac: I love to read, and I love great artwork, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been really inspired to write music specifically based on a feeling I got from any of those things. I’ve thought about trying to write songs like that, but for me it’s always been better not to force a concept. I guess I feel like it would be forcing a song to say, “I’m going to write about this right now.” A lot of my favorite songs are based off of other art forms, but for me it just doesn’t fit my writing style. RSVP: What is your writing style? Zac: Usually I kind of let the song write itself. I’ll sit down and play some different things on the guitar until I feel good about what I’ve got, then I just hum along to get a feel for the melody and timing of the lyrics. Then it’s kind of like a puzzle to see which words fit into place rhythmically, as well as what fits the mood of the song and the mood that I’m in. I’ve written a couple of songs with the lyrics first, and it usually doesn’t work out well for me.
RSVP: What recording have you done in your young career, and what recording do you have planned? Zac: In 2009, I worked with a Mobile-based company called Mudbrick Media to record a few songs and music videos. I think there are five songs and eight videos for purchase on iTunes. I recently re-recorded a couple of those with Straighten Up Houston. Right now they aren’t available for download, but you can listen to them online. We don’t have any concrete plans to get back in the studio yet, but hopefully this year we will be ready to put out a full-length album. RSVP: How does playing live influence your work? Zac: Live performances have influenced my original music a lot. I only played solo acoustic for a while, so all of my songs were written specifically for acoustic shows. And now it’s really important to me, especially with a three-piece band, that anything we do in a recording can be reproduced in a live show. I guess the live show is more important to me than the album. RSVP: What is your favorite live experience? Zac: I don’t know if I really have a single favorite experience. Every single performance is a little bit different, even if it’s the same people at the same place, so the nights that the audience really gets something out of a show are my favorite times.*
