COTS (kots), n. 1. Commercial off-the-shelf. Terminology popularized in 1994 within U.S. DoD by SECDEF Wm. Perry’s “Perry Memo” that changed military industry purchasing and design guidelines, making Mil-Specs acceptable only by waiver. COTS is generally defined for technology, goods and services as: a) using commercial business practices and specifications, b) not developed under government funding, c) offered for sale to the general market, d) still must meet the program ORD. 2. Commercial business practices include the accepted practice of customer-paid minor modification to standard COTS products to meet the customer’s unique requirements. —Ant. When applied to the procurement of electronics for he U.S. Military, COTS is a procurement philosophy and does not imply commercial, office environment or any other durability grade. E.g., rad-hard components designed and offered for sale to the general market are COTS if they were developed by the company and not under government funding.

Biased Toward Technology
T
he AFCEA West show this month in San Diego had its share of biases—the show had a mix of east and west coast companies, with bias toward west coast. And it had a mix of vendors in the IT side of defense technology and those in our embedded computing side. And finally, there was a natural bias toward Navy/ Shipboard technologies. None of these were surprising for a southern California show co-run by the U.S. Naval Institute. And as a New Englander I will confess my bias that week in favor of being in sunny San Diego away from my cold and snow-covered home. During his lunch keynote at the show Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work likewise showed a bias—one that’s positive for the future of our industry. His bias was toward investing in technology. In fact as soon as he reached the technology part of this speech it was clear that Work clearly gets it in terms of COTS without even using the word. Work contrasted how in the 1950s though 1970s a lot of money was spent on missiles, on nuclear weapons, space and the beginnings of the early computer age. And it was all generally government driven. “But today, “ said Work, “commercial adaptation and commercial innovation is really the thing that is causing all of us to scratch our heads and say ‘where are we headed? Robotics, autonomous operating guidance and control systems, new ways of visualization, biotechnology, miniaturization, advanced computing, big data, additive manufacturing like 3D printing, all of those advances are being pushed primarily in the commercial sector.” With that in mind Work said the DoD has to work closely with the commercial sector and to make sure the department is exploiting all of the advances happening there. That’s a motivation between the updated 3.0 version Better Buying Power initiative announced by Frank Kendall last fall. Kendall is the DoD’s undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology, and logistics. Because technology is changing at such a rapid pace in the commercial technology sector, the DoD now has to think in terms of five year defense plans (FYDP). ”Five years out, what can we do with the stuff that we have differently, to have a new advantage, or what capabilities can we pull in very, very quickly?,” said Work. Referencing the
6
COTS Journal | February 2015
recently released FY ‘16 defense budget proposal, Work talked about how technology developments have to be linked to strategic and tactical advantages. The proposal includes more investment in unmanned underwater vehicles, high speed strike weapons, railguns, and high energy lasers and so on. Citing an example of technology advancement linked to gamechanging capabilities, Work described a recent test where the Block IV Tomahawk missile was in an anti-ship role. A few weeks ago the USS Kidd, a guided missile destroyer, launched a Tomahawk missile that changed course mid-flight and struck a moving ship after being queued by an aircraft. This said Work is a game-changing capability for not a lot of cost—a 1,000 mile anti-ship cruise missile and it can be used from practically our entire surface and submarine fleet. What happens, said Work, if we take another step and just make an advanced seeker on the Tomahawk rather than building a new missile? Decisions like that, said Work, are what will be able to outturn potential adversaries and maintain our technological superiority. Although Work is bullish on technology, he expressed that he doesn’t believe just in technology for technology sake. “Ultimately, if it’s not about winning on the future battlefield, I, as deputy secretary of defense, don’t want to waste a moment’s time on it.” The focus on technology—as always—ultimately filters down to good opportunities for our embedded computing industry. And it’s positive to hear that at the high levels of the DoD that viewpoint continues to be reinforced. Along those same lines Kendall said himself when he announced the Better Buying Power 3.0 initiative last fall. “We cannot afford to start things that we cannot afford,” Kendall said. “We’ve canceled programs over the years we started with great ambitions and aspirations that we should have realized earlier on were not affordable in the long term.” That’s why engineering expertise has to be part of the decision making. “If you’re going to run the development program, you really have to be an engineer,” Kendall said. “You wouldn’t supervise surgeons if you weren’t a surgeon.”

OceanServer Technology has recently delivered an Iver AUV for the MODUM project supported under the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme. The purpose of the MODUM is to move “Towards the Monitoring of Dumped Munitions Threats in the Baltic Sea.” The goal of the project is to establish a cost-effective, research-based monitoring network using underwater vehicles to enhance understanding about dumped munitions in the Baltic Sea which pose both environmental and human security threats. The Iver AUV is equipped with high resolution side scan sonar, a magnetometer and a full suite of environmental sensors utilizing the YSI Sonde 6600. This combination of sensors enables the AUV to identify likely munitions and take geo-registered environmental readings in close proximity to the targets. The Iver AUV should help determine the location of munitions (many of which are unknown), and allow for environmental impacts originating from corroded munitions to be continuously assessed (Figure 3). Concurrent Technologies Ensures VMEbus Lifetime Extension In response it IDT’s announcement that the Tsi148, the critical VMEbus bridge chip is going End of Life, Concurrent Technologies has reacted quickly with plan. Like almost all the other VME board vendors, Concurrent Technologies have been using the device from IDT. Military customers need
to continue to support existing VMEbus deployments, in some cases for many years. In order to provide as much flexibility as possible Concurrent are already offering: (1) A last time buy option for delivery of existing VME boards until around the end of 2015; (2) An option to extend the manufacturing of VME boards beyond 2016; and (3) The option to supply boards without the VME bridge device fitted. As a result of discussions with existing customers, this option satisfies opportunities that have the capability to use alternative control methods without the need to swap out the chassis and backplane. Datasheets are already available on Concurrent Technologies’ VP 91x/x1x and VP 717/08x products and these solutions are now available to order. In addition, early in 2015, the company expects to announce two new VME boards using a different bridge device. These solutions will enable customers to buy VMEbus cards based on new processor technology for the foreseeable future and are expected to be a popular choice

Power Supplies and Converters Focus on System Requirements As military platforms continue to pack in more embedded computing, the need for power systems to run them grows more critical. Vendors of power supplies and power converters keep pace by rolling out new innovative board- and brick-level solution. Jeff Child, Editor-in-Chief

he most sophisticated military electronic system is just a pile of metal and silicon until it has something to supply it power. That’s where power supplies and power converters come in, but too often military system designers c threat choosing power supplies and power conversion electronics as an afterthought. Today as more and more computing get crammed into smaller spaces, power has direct implications on the size, cooling and mobility of a board or box-level system. Consider also the challenges of multi-voltage electronics and the complexity of distributed system architectures, and it’s clear that military system designers need solutions that address those needs. Vendors are smoothing the way with flexible options and robust solutions. The good news is that military power conversion vendors are easing the burden with more efficient products, new partitioning strategies and increased ruggedization. New solutions continue to roll out, not just at the component or brick level, but also at the module and board level. Looking first at the component side of power supplies, technology suppliers continue to push the limits in power, high voltage, wide temperature range and advanced filtering schemes. It’s become quite challenging in today’s military power system designs to en-

sure the latest and greatest power supply and conversion technologies compliant to military standards. Defense applications must meet a number of noise and power related standards such as MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-704 (Figure 1) and MIL-STD-1275. Those standards have a number of revisions, any of which may be enforced by an application’s requirements.
Standards Support at Regulator Level Along those lines, Vicor’s PRM regulator (MPRM48NF480M500A00) is based on Vicor’s VI Chip platform. It provides power density of 106W/cm3 and efficiency of 97.7 percent. The new regulator delivers 500W output power in the same package size as Vicor’s earlier generation 120W MIL-COTS PRMs. When using Vicor’s VI Chip power components, power density gains of 4X can be achieved compared to conventional power modules—this can be a game changing advantage for UAV designs. The new PRM regulator is optimized for operation with Vicor’s MIL-COTS Bus Converter Module (BCM) in 270 VDC applications, making it suitable for a wide range of applications including HVDC aircraft systems. The VI Chip product platform, now in its second generation and the new PRM is conformant with MIL-STD-704E/F. The free online Vicor 12

PowerBench tool suite enables designers to easily configure, simulate and architect PRM-based power systems. In keeping with the theme of systemfocus, VPT’s latest offering is the VPT250 Series of isolated COTS DC-DC converters is a cost effective, high-reliable solution for demanding military applications (Figure 2). A wide input voltage range accommodates nominal 28V inputs for avionics, mobile, ground systems, and other applications. A high efficiency design using synchronous rectification reduces input power requirements and eases thermal management. Low input and output ripple, fixed operating frequency, and current sharing capability simplify system design and compliance. A proven design heritage, no optoisolators and a rugged epoxy encapsulated package ensure long term reliability. The VPT250 offers up to 250 W maximum output power. Its wide input voltage range is 16 to 40 V MILSTD-704 and MIL-STD-1275. The device is intended for harsh environments including severe vibration, shock and temperature cycling. Testing is to JESD22, MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-883
Meeting High-Reliability Needs High-reliability is a key feature for military applications that demand the harshest of environmental endurance. Feeding such
needs, SynQor last month announced the release of the MQSA-28-05S, the first to come in a new series of low-power, Hi-Rel converters. This 5W DC-DC converter is housed in a new compact package that is only 1.075- x 1.075- x 0.27-inches. Developed specifically for the military/aerospace industry to ensure survivability in the most hostile environments, the MQSA-28-05S uses SynQor’s innovative QorSeal packaging technology, which includes tin whisker mitigation. The MQSA-28-05S accepts a continuous input voltage of 16-40V, and it is capable of handling a transient input voltage of 50V for 1 second. This over-voltage transient complies with MIL-STD-704F, RTCA/DO-160G Cat A/R, MIL-STD-1275D (Gen+Bat), and DEF-STAN 61-5 (Part 6)/5 (Gen+Bat) limitations. The MQSA-28-05S converter operates from -55°C to 125°C baseplate temperature and provides up to 5W of power at a typical 80% efficiency throughout the temperature profile. It has an input-side referenced enable, an output over-voltage protection, a continuous short circuit and overload protection, as well as input under-voltage shutdown. There are no opto-isolators in the converter. The combination of high power density and wide input voltage is another much sought after mix for military system designers. With that in mind, Calex offers its wide input range MTW series (Figure 3). The MTW offers 360 W of output power in a standard ½ brick case. Available output voltages are 12, 15, 24 and 28 VDC. The input range for all models is 9 to 36VDC with no derating at 9Vin. The ultra wide 9 to 36V input range makes the MTW ideal for 12 and 24V battery powered applications as well as 28V COTS military applications. The MTW is isolated input to output and provides a precisely regulated output. The converters high efficiency and high power density are accomplished through use of high-efficiency synchronous rectification technology, advanced electronic circuit, packaging and thermal design thus resulting in a high reliability product. Converter operates at a fixed frequency and follows conservative component de-rating guidelines. The efficiency of the MTW is 95.7 percent, easing the job of thermal management of the converter. The case measures 2.4- x 2.5- x 0.50-inches with a metal surface

Power Supplies for VPX A couple years ago VITA released the VITA 62 specification. The VITA 62 power supply standard defines connector configuration, power generation requirements, utility, functionality and form factor requirements for power modules mating to a VPX backplane VITA 62 power supply slot. Since then a number of vendors have rolled out VITA 62-compliance products to help grow VPX ecosystem. An example along those lines is the XPm2220 from Extreme Engineering Solutions (Figure 4). A VITA 62-compliant 3U VPX power supply, the XPm2220 takes in a MIL-STD-704 or MIL-STD-1275 28 VDC input voltage and provides up to 300W on 3.3 V, 5 V, and ±12 V at up to 90% efficiency. The XPm2220 also provides on-card MIL-STD461E EMI filtering and MIL-STD-1275 transient suppression. The XPm2220 fits in a VITA 62-compliant 3U VPX 0.8 in. or 1.0 in. slot. TECH RECON Video Capture Payload System Strategies
Many Technology Choices Available for Military Video Capture In this era of HD video the pressure is on system developers to make sure the video capture phase isn’t a bottleneck. Smoothing the way, a variety of embedded systems solutions provide video capture and related functions Jeff Child, Editor-in-Chief
T
here’s no doubt that video has now become a key tactical and strategic tool for warfighters. And in this era of high-resolution cameras on one end of the signal chain, and high-resolution displays on the other, the pressure in on the video capture phase to not be a bottleneck. Fortunately the military embedded computing industry offers a range of solutions using different form factors and processing to meet the needs these applications. Even for SWaP (size, weight and power)-constrained systems like UAVs and ground vehicles, modular solutions provide the building blocks to meet tough requirements (Figure 1). Often video capture is part of sophisticated systems for battlefield analysis and situation awareness—sometimes in real time and sometimes for post-processing analysis. Such systems can require real-time image stabilization, 360° images built from many fixed cameras, fusion of multiple day light or infrared images into a single image, image resolution adaptation and filtering and so on. Everything from consumer graphics chips to FPGAs to GPUs are used to meet the various needs of video capture and to implement numerous video interface adaptations and video protocols. And modules in a variety of form factors put those electronics into rugged, deployable solutions. 16
COTS Journal | February 2015
Figure 1 As high-res video becomes the norm, sophisticated video capture technologies need to reside in form factors suited to SWaP constrained platforms such as UAVs.
Video Capture on XMC The XMC form factor ranks among the more popular form factors for rugged video capture products. It blends the right compact size with high performance switch fabric I/O to stream video through the board. Exemplifying this trend, Creative Electronic Systems offers its VPP-8112 video I/O and
processor XMC. The VPP-8112 is specifically designed as a powerful video acquisition and processing solution for harsh environmental conditions (Figure 2). The VPP-8112 features the DaVinci digital media processor from Texas Instruments. It incorporates an ARM Cortex-A8 processor, running an embedded Linux system, a floating-point VLIW DSP, a video

It is the first Curtiss-Wright graphics module to support full stream video capture and 1.485 Gbps HD-SDI (SMPTE-292M) output to support the transfer of uncompressed high-definition video. It eases and speeds the integration of dual independent channels of 2D/3D graphics display into deployed airborne systems that require optimal performance in harsh environments.
Figure 2 The VPP-8112 based on TI’s DaVinci digital media processor blends an ARM Cortex-A8 processor, floating-point VLIW DSP, a video image coprocessor for H.264 and MPEG-4 video compression, decompression and a 3D graphics processing unit.

image coprocessor for H.264 and MPEG-4 video compression, decompression and a 3D graphics processing unit. Its multiple integrated I/O peripherals provide native support for a PCIe x1 Gen2 link, two Gigabit Ethernet links, one SATA-II interface for external storage and two USB 2.0 ports. The VPP-8112 has two stereo audio inputs and outputs to complement the video capability of the module. The VPP-8112 module has options for air-cooled and conduction-cooled operating environments. As system designers now rely more and more on technology suppliers for standards compliance, board-level products are
offering certifiable board including video capture solutions. Along such lines, CurtissWright Defense Solutions division last fall introduced the VPX3-718, a graphics display and video capture engine that supports DO254 DAL C and DO-178C DAL C safety certifiability. The VPX3-718 graphics module significantly speeds and reduces the cost of developing critical aviation applications on any platform that requires high performance graphics and video processing. These modules feature the standard DO-254/DO178 design artifact packages required to support successful certification of the customer’s system. The VPX3-718 is powered
Addressing Video Relay Hurdles The sheer amount of data bandwidth needed to transmit video means can cause the relying of that data to bottleneck a system. Easing that challenge at the video capture stage helps smooth those issues. With that in mind, Tech Source provides its ultralow power, rugged Condor VC102x XMC H.264 compression and raw video capture card (Figure 3). The card provides a novel solution to the video relay bandwidth hurdles and latency issues experienced by developers of manned and unmanned avionics solutions and other military and industrial video streaming applications. The Condor VC102x features two H.264 encoders on board and two dedicated Ethernet outputs, acting as a frame grabber as well as an H.264 encoder. As a result, the card can be configured to provide raw video (1080p at 30 frames per second) to a local host for real time viewing and image analysis while simultaneously sending an encoded stream to the on board Ethernet ports for transmission to a remote location using real-time transport protocol (RTP). The Condor VC102x is a high definition (HD) or standard definition (SD) card that features an H.264 video encoder with baseline, main, and high profile support up to Level 4.1. H.264 encoding is performed in hardware to minimize CPU usage. There are two main variants of the card-one that supports two SD/ HD-SDI video inputs and one that supports two composite video (TV) inputs.
Emphasis on Image Stabilization In highly space-constrained platforms, it helps to integrate as many functions on one card as possible. Doing just that with video tracking and image stabilization, GE’s Intelligent Platforms last fall released the rugged ADEPT4000 compact high definition COTS Journal | February 2015

digital video tracker with electronic image processing (Figure 4). The company claims it as the first HD digital video tracker with the capability to perform tracking, image stabilization and video compression simultaneously. Measuring just 64mm x 54mm - 75 mm x 75 mm including connectors— weighing only 28 grams and consuming (depending on settings) only 4W of power, the ADEPT4000 meets the needs of SWaPconstrained systems. The ADEPT4000 combines high performance with low latency simultaneous target tracking with any SD/HD-SDI or parallel digital video signal, electronic video stabilization, moving target detection and video compression. It incorporates onboard serial links and Ethernet, allowing it to interface to most platforms, and is designed for easy configuration and device control with an intuitive web-based interface. An optional carrier card and carrier reference design is available to speed evaluation, design and integration.
Complex GPGPU Implementations Highly complex video processing solutions can leverage GPGPU technology when a lot of parallel processing is required. To 18

help tackle the complexities involved in such designs, Mercury Systems offers its Imaging Toolkit to help developers of electro-optical, infrared (EO/IR), hyperspectral and radar imaging applications leverage the performance power of general purpose graphics processing units (GPGPUs). The Imaging Toolkit contains highly advanced image-processing algorithms optimized to run on the latest-generation GPUs and designed specifically to integrate and sync with the multiple complex sensors typically required in UAV applications. The kit provides a layer of abstraction between the application and the GPGPU code, insulating developers from the GPGPU implementation details. The algorithms used in the Imaging Toolkit include imaging functions specifically designed to support high-bandwidth data streams from multiple sensors. These are optimized to take full advantage of parallel multicore processing while minimizing data latency, lowering risk, and allowing developers to focus on their application development. One of the realities of military system designs is that many systems have to blend new technology with legacy interfaces. That’s no less true in the video capture world. Interface Concept describes an implemen-
tation that used FPGAs and VPX to craft a solution that must accommodate legacy interfaces like STANAG3350B. In the systems two of the dual-mode display outputs are connected to a Xilinx Kintex-7 through two high-speed quad GTX transceivers. Preprocessing on GPU and video conversion with Kintex-7 resources is performed on Interface Concept’s IC-GRA-VPX6a. A second video flow comes through the IC-GRA-VPX6a rear data path that enables many video applications; the Intel Sandy Bridge dual processor dual core VPX 6U SBC IC-INT-VPX6a and its HDMI port is connected to an HDMI decoder module on a standard bank implementing ISERDES resources of the Xilinx Kintex-7. Video scaling followed up with an interlacing module that enables it to convert a high resolution progressive scan video to a STANAG3350B-compliant format with its specific timings. Two DACs with advanced synchronization modules are also available on the IC-GRA-VPX6a board. On a third video flow, an IR Camera is connected to a Camera Link decoding module instantiated into the Kinterx-7 FPGA. The image is then merged with the E8860 HDMI display source after video scaling. Object detection and tracking is then performed before ARINC 818 video encoding.
PCI Express for Video Capture PCI Express card form factors are another popular choice for video capture, especially when part of a rackmount system. For its part, Advanced Micro Peripherals offers the AVC8000nano, providing 8 channel video capture on a mini PCI express card. The AVC8000nano is suited for high pressure, demanding or extreme environments, including UAV-based video capture, real-time situational awareness, law enforcement, crime scene recording and asset or traffic monitoring. The AVC8000nano is ideal for capturing up to eight concurrent analog video inputs and delivers pin sharp imagery time after time. Captured video can be scaled, cropped and positioned effortlessly, thanks to AVC8000nano’s intuitive software controls. In addition, captured video can be streamed continuously to system memory for immediate processing or local display or to disc storage. Trenton Systems was involved in pro-

MicroTCA Chosen for Navy Towed Sonar Array MicroTCA offers an impressive level of compute density and a wealth of signal processing capabilities. A sonar array application leveraged those advantages to meet its performance needs. Justin Moll, Director of Marketing Vadatech
M
icroTCA has quietly been capturing mindshare amongst military system developers. To explore the technology trends that attract these engineers to MicroTCA, this case study examines how a prime military contractor chose MicroTCA over competing architectures for its naval computing application. The company was looking for a system for the signal processing of SONAR data from towed arrays or other sensors on the board. A towed array sonar system is towed behind a submarine or a surface ship in order to ensure the array’s sensors are far enough away from the ship’s own sound sources (Figure 1). This improves signal-to-noise ratio, making it easier to detecting faint contacts and track them. For this program the requirement included a rugged front-to-rear cooled rackmount design for above and below-surface vessels with capability for a multi-gigabit backplane data transfer and failover options. Vadatech develop a 1U solution that would provide vibration and shock resistance in an isolated rack. The chassis is designed to meet MIL-STD-901D and 167A for shock/vibration and to MIL-STD-461 for EMI.

Figure 1 A towed array sonar system is towed behind a ship in to ensure the array’s sensors are far enough away from the ship’s own sound sources.
SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT System Requirements For the signal processing, a high-performance Xilinx FPGA Carrier in the AMC form factor was selected. With a suite of Xilinx-based FPGAs, the prime contractor was able to choose between Virtex-6, Virtex-7, Kintex-7, Zynq-7000, and Artix-7. Figure 2 shows some of the FPGA types that can be used in the AMC form factor. The engineers at the prime ended up choosing a mid-range Virtex FPGA. The carrier accepts one FPGA Mezzanine Card (FMC) for versatility and scalability. In this application, a customized FMC for beam-forming was created. Of course, Altera-based FPGAs can be used as well. Usually, the prime contractor or OEM has a preference between Xilinx or Altera. Although Xilinx is more commonly used, there are powerful AMCs using Altera chipsets. For example a communications-market Fortune 1000 company is using a 100G FPGA AMC in a currently deployed system. The 100G FPGA is out of the front panel, not across the backplane. It uses a CFP2 port and a CN6880 32-core Cavium processor. Although that application is communications market based, the example demonstrates the performance upgrade path available for future requirements in any system. The MicroTCA.0 specification is being updated to include 40GbE signaling (currently in Draft).
Processor AMC at Host The Towed SONAR Array application also required an Intel PrAMC as a host processor. This unit provided pre-processing and acted as the system host. While highend Haswell PCIe Gen3 processors are available in MicroTCA/AMC, the application did not require that level of performance. Therefore, a Xeon E3-1125 was selected. It provides 4 cores at 2.5 GHz with 8 MB LLC. The AMC module also has an on-board PCH with 32 Gbytes of Flash and a bank of BIOS Flash, as well up to 16 Gbytes of DDR3 memory for the Intel chip. The chassis system routed x8 PCIe Gen 3 to each of the 6 slots, providing high-speed connectivity between the AMCs. The system provides precision clocking with GPS/IEEE1588/SyncE, including a hold-over crystal for maintaining time while out of range/sight of the network.
Figure 2 A variety FPGA types are available on AMC form factor modules including Virtex-6, Virtex-7, Kintex-7, Zynq-7000, and Artix-7.
A related program will use per VITA 57 for networking and a network interface module. Various port options are available for FMCs, including dual or quad RJ-45, SFP+, or QSFP+ cages. These provide for GbE/10 GbE/40 GbE routing in the system, respectively. For empty AMC slots, there are hundreds of off-the-shelf I/O modules, storage, graphics, networking, switches, and carriers available in the marketplace. The AMC carriers can support PMC or even XMC or, of course, FMC modules as described above. This allows for a vast ecosystem of modules to be used in near limitless configuration options. There are also double module carriers for PCIe Gen3 cards, allowing high-end commercial graphics or other boards to be incorporated into MicroTCA systems.

The front-to-rear cooled chassis can provide Ethernet time services to the chassis networks on both the GbE and 40GbE fabrics. It can be subordinate to an external PTP or NTP master server or when the GPS receiver option is selected can act as a grand master clock utilizing the precision timing information provided via the GPS receiver and onboard disciplined oscillator. front panel tabs to meet the ruggedization requirements. Similar applications may use Vadatech’s ATR-based MicroTCA solutions compliant to MicroTCA.3 for hardened conduction-cooled systems. The come in ½ and ¾ ATR sizes or can be offered in rackmount formats. The company is also developing MicroTCA.2 design for hybrid air/conduction cooling in a heat-exchanged chassis. In deeper MicroTCA chassis via a midplane, it is possible to have 12 AMC slots in a 1U height. These chassis are typically approximately 600 mm deep as opposed to the more typical 300mm-475mm depths. Imagine routing x8 PCIe Gen3 to each of the 12 slots via an integrated 96-port switch. Figure 4 shows a block diagram of such a system. The performance capabilities in a 1U chassis can be very compelling in this type of configuration. It should be noted that these chassis are not designed to the rugged MIL-specs, but are used in many benign environment MIL/Aero applications.
MicroTCA in Mil/Aero Applications The MicroTCA architecture has been selected in several defense projects worldwide, particularly in the last 18 months. This is largely because as a rule of thumb it is between 2/3 and ½ the size, weight, and cost of competing solutions. The technological advancements for MicroTCA tend to be fast and powerful, as the architecture is used in bleeding-edge communications systems and research/physics projects. Other Mil/ Aero applications include multiple radar signal processing designs, in both airborne and mobile land-based vehicles. Other implementations include naval submarine, helicopter, vehicle-based 360-degree situations awareness systems and more. Vadatech Henderson, NV (702) 896-3337 www.vadatech.com

ith 2015 marking its 20th year, the CompactPCI embedded form factor is now entrenched with the maturity and broad product range that military system designers so crave. The 3U flavor of cPCI is particularly attractive to space/weight-constrained applications like avionics. And follow on enhancements like CompactPCI Serial adds new levels of bandwidth. The PCI Industrial Manufacturers Group’s (PICMG) original CompactPCI specification was adopted in 1995 and is mechanically based on the proven Eurocard form factor. In its early days CompactPCI was envisioned primarily as a telecom technology, but in fact over the years its success has been much broader and stable in markets industrial control, transportation and defense. While no one expects cPCI to compare will ever equal the legacy of VME in the military market, CompactPCI filled a lot of needs during the gap when VPX was going through its growing pains—securing a number of key military design wins in the process. And just like with VME, vendors continue to offer board produces with the latest and greatest processors like Intel Core i7, Freescale’s QorIQ and even ARM CPUs. An example of where CompactPCI technology has been is on board the rotary wing UAV Fire Scout. The UAV’s Vehicle Manage26

In December the MQ-8B Fire Scout flew off a U.S. Coast Guard ship for first time (Figure 1). The most recent
CompactPCI Serial (CPCI-S.0) specification adds greater support for serial pointto-point fabrics but is fabric agnostic like OpenVPX. CompactPCI Serial supports PCI Express, SATA, Ethernet and USB in the classic CompactPCI form factor. CompactPCI Serial offers some advantages in simplicity in comparison to OpenVPX. CompactPCI Serial doesn’t require any switches or bridges in systems with up to nine slots. Systems with up to 21 slots can be implemented with a bridge. And pin assignments of all peripheral slots are identical. A system slot supports a total of six PCI Express links with up to four lanes each, two links with up to 8 lanes, eight SATA/SAS interfaces, eight USB, and eight Ethernet interfaces. Plus there are of signals supporting those interfaces and for general system management. At the board level already, VPX demands higher costs because of the complex VPX connector even though it offers no advantages over CompactPCI Serial in terms of speed. Interoperability was once a nightmare for VPX, though the OpenVPX evolution helped define the many possible configurations. Meanwhile the strictly standardized pin assignment of CompactPCI Serial means most applications require standard boards and backplanes without extra engineering costs to make them compatible.

COMING NEXT MONTH Special Feature: Tech Upgrades with VME, CompactPCI and More
Tech upgrade strategies vary depending on whether it’s just the processing technology that needs a refresh or whether the interconnect speeds and other capabilities are the issue. With both VME and CompactPCI a new board with the latest and greatest processor, memory and I/O can easily be dropped into a slot that could be decades old. VME is still more suited for use in applications that are event-driven. Meanwhile, upgrade options for CompactPCI include PICMG 2.16, CompactPCI PlusIO and CompactPCI Express. This section looks at technology and product choices involved in these decisions.
Tech Recon Signal Chain: Digital Conversion with FPGAs and ADCs
Throughout 2015 our Tech Recon feature delivers a series of sections that follow a sequential path hitting all the key technologies that are part of a signal chain. The series tracks the various types of processing, storage and display technologies that are critical at each point along the path. Starting in January with Signal Capture, the section hits a different phase along the chain each month. The March Signal Chain section looks at the FPGA and ADC chip and board-level technology and products that do the heavy lifting during the digital conversion phase of the signal chain.
