LUNATICS ORDINANCE (APPROVAL OF SECURE PLACE FOR LUNATICS) ORDER 2013 (Legal Notice 61 of 2013)
WHEREAS it is provided in the definition of “secure place” under section 2 of the Lunatics Ordinance, that secure place means any place approved by the Governor for the detention of a lunatic. NOW THEREFORE, I, PETER BECKINGHAM, Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands, pursuant to the definition of “secure place” under section 2 of the Lunatics Ordinance, DO HEREBY APPROVE Her Majesty’s Prison Grand Turk to be a secure place for the detention of a lunatic.
MADE this 19th day of December 2013.
PETER BECKINGHAM GOVERNOR
EXPLANATORY NOTE (This Note is not part of the Order) This Order seeks to approve Her Majesty’s Prison Grand Turk to be a secure place for the detention of a lunatic. Though the term “lunatics is archaic and politically incorrect in its nature, it is used as it is the term used in the Ordinance. However the Ordinance is under review with a view of revamping the mental health system and legislation in the Turks and Caicos Islands and coming up with a Mental Health Ordinance (usage of appropriate language to refer to the mentally ill will also be considered in this review).
