TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS A PROPOSAL FOR A

BILL FOR AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE PUBLIC HOLIDAYS ORDINANCE.

ENACTED by the Legislature of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Short title and commencement 1. This Ordinance may be cited as the Public Holidays (Amendment) Ordinance 2014 and shall come into operation on publication.

Interpretation 2. In this Ordinance the “principal Ordinance” means the Public Holidays Ordinance.

Schedule amended 3. The Schedule to the principal Ordinance is amended— (a) by inserting immediately after paragraph 7 the following paragraph— “8. National Youth Day

Last Friday in September”

(b) by renumbering paragraph 8 as paragraph 9 and repealing the words “Columbus Day’ and substituting with “National Heritage Day”; (c) by repealing paragraph 9; (d) by inserting immediately after the renumbered paragraph 9 the following paragraph— “10. National Day of Thanksgiving

EXPLANATORY MEMORANDUM The Public Holidays (Amendment) Bill seeks to amend the Schedule to the principal Ordinance by making changes to the public holidays. BILL The Schedule is amended – (a) by inserting National Youth Day as a public holiday; (b) changing the name of the holiday known as “Columbus Day” to “National Heritage Day”; (c) removing the International Human Rights day as a public holiday, which shall no longer be observed as a public holiday; (d) by inserting National Thanksgiving Day to be observed as a public , which holiday shall fall on the fourth Friday in November; and (e) making the necessary renumbering of paragraphs to ensure a sequential flow of the holidays.
