Darwen Live 2014 25/05 - 26/05

welcome

Darwen Live 2014 is the biggest event we have ever hosted, more acts, more venues and hopefully more people visiting our town than ever before. Not only do we have a large number of acts performing for you, but also a depth of quality, genres and styles that could make us the envy of many other music festivals. Darwen Live is funded primarily by Darwen Town Council and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, which allows us to make this a completely free to attend event, one of the largest in the North of England! The festival is organised by volunteers and we do our utmost to get the best value for the event (for example, this free brochure is funded by sponsors). In a time of cutbacks and austerity, we are incredibly grateful to Darwen Town Council and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council for their continued support and commitment to Darwen Live. We’re aiming to make Darwen Live an event for all elements of the community, this year we have venues well away from the established venues in The Golden Cup and Darwen Subscription Bowling Club. Both venues have a full programme of artists to bring Darwen Live to people that don’t want to or aren’t able to come into the town centre.

T-shirts hoods and pins all available on the day. T-shirts £5 hoods £15 pins £2

Moving forward, we’re hoping to expand the event to even more people in Darwen to make it a real community-focussed festival. If you would like to make Darwen Live even better, be involved with the organising, promotion, fundraising or to apply to perform at Darwen Live then please contact Darwen Town Council: darwenlive@darwentowncouncil.org.uk Enjoy Darwen Live 2014!! Mayor Trevor Maxfield Chairman of the Organising Committee

The south When great British pop institution, The Beautiful South split in 2006, several members of the band weren’t ready to let it go.

in a 20 year career. Perfect 10, Rotterdam, Old Red Eyes, Good as Gold, Don’t Marry Her. All performed again live, as they have been doing since 1989!

So 2 years later, singers Dave Hemingway and Alison Wheeler, alongside life long members Damon Butcher (keys), Gaz Birtles (sax) and Tony Robinson (trumpet), came out of retirement and formed the 9 piece band, The South. With the realisation that if the fans didn’t want it, they wouldn’t do it, The South embarked on their journey. But boy, did the fans want it! And still do. Those classic songs live on. Songs such as A Little Time - the bands number one single - sung by Dave Hemingway, just one of the many highlights

A few years further down the line The South now have their debut album under their belt. A self financed labour of love, Sweet Refrains unveils their own brand of irresistible pop melodies laced with twists of caustic wit and opens another new chapter started by The Beautiful South.

After five years of filling venues and dance halls all over the North West, The SoulTrain prepare to headline Darwen Live on Monday 26th May. This will be the first time that the group have headlined the event despite having performed at Darwen Live several times in the past. So what is now different about the SoulTrain than in previous years? Well, a strong focus towards Northern Soul has seen the band’s profile rise dramatically in a very short space of time. Now being acknowledged as the UK’s number one Northern Soul band, the Lancashire/Yorkshire based nine-piece group have been taking recent audiences by storm. With an army of followers and admirers including legendary Wigan Casino DJs Richard Searling and Keith Fletcher, their recent shows at Blackpool Tower Ballroom, Ascot

Racecourse and the ‘Northern Soul All-Nighter’ at The Victoria Baths “Un-Rest Festival” in Manchester have seen the band gain recognition as the UK’s must-see Northern Soul band. The SoulTrain have recently added former Simply Red drummer Chris Joyce to their ranks. With the vibrant, powerful voice of Darwen based lead singer Paul Stuart Davies and the blistering sound of ‘The Union Pacific Horns’ over the tightest of rhythm sections, just try to stop yourself dancing if you can... The SoulTrain are the real deal! Northern Soul, Sixties Soul… call it what you like, The SoulTrain Keep The Faith!

main stage sunday 7:00pm Essex five-piece Missing Andy finished as runners-up in the Sky1 talent competition Must Be The Music and have gone from strength to strength after the release of their debut album ‘Generation Silenced’ in 2011. You’ll hear many different influences from bands who know how to knock out a tune. Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Blur, The Jam, Madness – they’re all in there, whether through conscious effort or just a natural by-product of their talent, it doesn’t matter – Missing Andy have their own inimitable style. They’re a well dressed bunch too, fashionable with Mod overtones. They all come from a working class background and, as evidenced by their lyrics, have a down to earth attitude about life and the hands it sometimes deals us.

In a short space of time the band have been building themselves a live reputation around the UK and Europe for delivering a bouncing, sweaty show! Their single ‘Can’t Stand The Rain’ features the legendary Neville Staple of The Specials. The song hit over 55 thousand views on YouTube and has featured on C4 and C5 shows including Hollyoaks.

Playing music inspired by the original pioneers of rock n roll such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Eddie Cochran, Doug Perkins & The Spectaculars are sure to get everyone in the room jumping and jiving.

Fusing Stoner Rock with deep rooted Blues and Rock sensibilities, Good Foxy formed in 2013 . These four boys openly revel in the music of their forefathers. The band are creative and expressive people with deep mutual understanding.

Shell Deliah is Michelle Harris and Alex Dopierala, a Contemporary R&B act based in Liverpool.

Firmly routed in the traditional music and songs of Ireland but also taking from Scotland and Lancashire, the band features Steven Johnston on Uilleann Pipes, Martin Baptie on Fiddle, Richard Moss on Guitar and Vocals and Daniel Burke on Tenor Banjo.

With their first soft release out in April 2014 and the versatility of doing full band shows, through to the acoustic show that Darwen will see today, Shell Deliah are taking their energetic, yet sophisticated live set around the UK.

chris Flynn ‘Cinematic and memorable’ is how the press depicts Chris Flynn’s songs. The accomplished singer songwriter is performing with guest musicians, following his sell out gig at The Lowry in April.

Steven Lindley Steven Lindley will be performing a short set in Darwen Library Theatre with his excellent band of highly talented musicians - “The Uncertainty Principle” - on the Sunday afternoon during Darwen Music Live this year, before undertaking some ‘full’ shows through the summer months. As an exception to Heisenberg’s rule, we can say that at 4:30pm SL will be in the Library Theatre and the band will be up to speed…!

Sounding like a head-on collision between Joy Division and The Stooges, The November Five have a reputation for creating explosive live shows that will leave your senses reeling and your heart pumping. Their debut album, ‘If You’re Satisfied You Are Dead’ is a passionate and furious riposte to the spurious notion that we should “Keep Calm and Carry On”, described by Rock’n’Reel magazine as “the essential antidote to the insipid rise of Merchant-Ivory boy-band folk-rock” Shindig magazine said, “If you like the incendiary music of The MC5, The Stooges, The Birthday Party, Jim Jones Revue or The Cramps then go get their singles and album. Even better still, go watch them live as you will not be disappointed in the slightest.” The November Five are set to rip up Darwen. They are Godzilla and you are Tokyo.
