1958
Harley-Davidson offers the first XL Sportster model. At 55 cubic inches and overhead valves, the Sportster was a new height in agility and speed. The Motorcyclist magazine review referred to it as a “package of dynamite from Milwaukee.”
The Sportster CH (XLCH) is introduced. The CH referred to “Competition Hot” and is a more stripped-down version of the original XL. It also introduces the trademark “Peanut” gas tank to Sportster models.
1970
Driven by a modified Sportster engine, a streamlined Harley-Davidson motorcycle breaks the land speed record for all motorcycles. The average speed achieved was over 265 miles per hour.
Evolution becomes revolution. 1986
1996
The Sportster family receives the Sportster Evolution engine in 883cc and 1100cc displacements. This marks a significant step forward in Sportster powertrain engineering.
The first of the 1200S "Sport" and 1200C "Custom" models are released.
SPORTSTER 1200C
2002 The Sportster 883R street motorcycle, patterned after the race model of the same name, and incorporating racing styling going back to 1970 is introduced. 2
The Sport offers race styling and power, and the Custom offers unique chrome appointments and other custom features.

The aluminium alloy XR-750 debuts. It will be the dominate dirt track racer for the next three decades.
The most unique of all Sportster platform bikes, the XLCR or Cafe Racer, is introduced. It is the most powerful Harley-Davidson to that date. The black sport motorcycle combines the classic European Cafe Racer with American styling and power.
The XR-1000 Street Rod launches, with an XR engine, increased to 1000cc. No previous Sportster model had the same racing pedigree.

2011
The 883C and 1200C Sportsters receive an all-new 4.5-gallon gas tank. Both 1200cc bikes received performance cams and high-flow heads to increase horsepower along with wider rear tyres. For better comfort, all 2004 Sportsters received rubber engine isolation mounts, new brake systems, and lower seat heights.
The Forty-Eight model is released, which includes the original all-steel peanut fuel tank and minimalist styling of the classic Sportster XLCH models of the late 1950s and early 60s.
SPORTSTER 1200R
2008 First introduced to the European market, the XR-1200 follows the tradition of the Café Racer. The XR-1200 is the most radical Sportster model to date and brings aggressive styling from the racetrack. 3
2021 A new chapter opens in H-D’s longest running family, powered by the all-new Revolution® Max 1250T. To call it the ultimate Sportster® is an understatement. Prepare for a level of power and performance that has surpassed all expectations.

ALL-NEW REVOLUTION® MAX 1250T The next chapter in a century of legendary V-Twins is here. Revolution® Max is a liquid-cooled powertrain with double overhead camshafts and variable valve timing: full of ample torque, and a surging powerband tuned to maximise rider control.
2-1-2 HIGH MOUNT EXHAUST Inspired by the glory days of H-D flat-track racing, the pipes are crafted from corrosion-resistant 304-series stainless steel and engineered to deflect exhaust heat away from the rider’s legs and tail section.
