2024 Anniverary Season Campaign Report

Page 1

Dear Friends

Thanks to all of you for your generous support of our Anniversary Season Campaign last year. In celebration of the 90th anniversary of the publication of the first Peterson Field Guide and the 40th anniversary of the founding of RTPI, we enjoyed a record-setting year. We doubled the number of RTPI members compared to last year and more than tripled individual giving!

Your support is vital to honor the legacy of our dad, to provide our growing number of visitors an unparalleled museum experience and to nurture the next generation of artists whose art likewise matters to the planet. We cannot wait for you to experience this year's lineup of exhibitions, programs and events. We are looking forward to seeing you at RTPI soon.

With much appreciation,

In 1974, Barbara Peterson accompanied her husband to the annual dinner of the Explorers Club. That year, Roger was awarded the Explorers Medal, the Club’s highest honor, which recognizes individuals for their extraordinary contributions directly in the field of exploration, scientific research, or to the welfare of humanity. Following a program about his worldwide travels, the award was presented to Roger as an artist, naturalist, and explorer whose own ethic helped develop a new environmental consciousness.

The Explorers Club is a multidisciplinary society dedicated to the advancement of field research, scientific exploration and resource conservation.

Headquartered in New York City with a community of Chapters around the world, The Explorers Club has been supporting scientific expeditions of all disciplines, and uniting members in the bonds of good fellowship for over a century.

The Explorers Medal is just one of many that Roger was awarded during his lifetime. Other honors include the Linné Gold Medal from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (1976), a Gold Medal from the World Wildlife Fund (1972), the Audubon Conservation Medal (1971), and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, bestowed on him by the late President Jimmy Carter in 1980.

The Anniversary Season Highlights

The Anniversary Season was exceptional on many fronts. In addition to the large increases in memberships and individual giving, total museum attendance grew by 22%. In fact, since 2019, the last full year prior to the pandemic, RTPI has increased the number of visitors by a whopping 360%. Roughly half our visitors come from beyond Chautauqua County, underscoring our commitment to help drive tourism to our community.

Amy Tan.

Clearly, our idea of Art that Matters to the Planet matters to a large and growing number of people. In 2024, we hosted a total of nine exhibitions, featuring the work of Roger Tory Peterson, our artists-in-residence, our Plein Air Festival artists, and some of the most dynamic contemporary artists from across the country – including Amy Tan. Most know Ms. Tan as a world-renowned, bestselling author. Last year, she published a book titled, The Backyard Bird Chronicles. RTPI was the only museum to invite Ms. Tan to exhibit her journals and original sketches, which tell the story of her falling in love with birds through the lens of art and writing.

Since the adoption of our new strategic plan in 2021, our programs and events are fast becoming treasured community traditions: Art After 5, Summer Soirée, Roger’s Bird Day Bash, Plein Air Festival, Holidays at the Lodge, not to mention RTPI’s annual hosting of the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour.

And let us not forget the birds. RTPI is nestled in a nature preserve that is home to 125 different species of birds – including eastern bluebirds. We recently established a bluebird trail on site not only because the Eastern Bluebird is the state bird of New York, but also because it is Roger’s painting of a bluebird that graces NY state custom license plates for environmental conservation.

In 2024, RTPI became an official site on the New York State Birding Trail. We also entered into a new partnership with the Chautauqua-Warren Birding Association to conduct guided bird walks at RTPI.

Thanks to your support, RTPI has been able to accomplish all this, and also to set the stage for an even more exciting season of exhibitions, programs and events in 2025.

Ways to Support RTPI

RTPI is committed to generating as much earned income as possible through increased admissions, museum store sales, programs, events and private rentals. We are likewise committed to growing our base of foundation, corporate and government supporters. Nonetheless, the success of RTPI – now and into the future – depends significantly upon the generosity of individuals, such as you.

There are several ways to support the mission work of RTPI. For information about any of these opportunities, please contact CEO Arthur Pearson at apearson@rtpi.org or by calling 716-665-2473, extension 224.

Become a Member

To become a member of RTPI is to become a member of our growing family of supporters. All memberships are 100% tax deductible. Depending on your membership level, you may enjoy a number of member benefits, which remain in effect for a full year from the month of purchase.

Make a Donation

In short, if you make any kind of cash donation to RTPI, we consider you to be a member, a part of the family. Additional gifts may, at your request, be reflected in your membership level.

Make a Major Gift

Over the years, supporters have approached RTPI about making major gifts, often in memory of someone special. The Library, Roger’s Art Studio, the Bird Feeding Station and the Art and Nature Trail are named in honor of loved ones.

Volunteer your Time

Time is money. A gift of time is equally important to us. In 2024, more than 30 volunteers contributed 400 hours of service. At the national volunteer rate of $33.50 per hour, our volunteers contributed a combined total of more than $13,000.

Charles Donald Powers

A Legacy for the Love of Birds

Don Powers was born in 1934, the year that Roger Tory Peterson’s A Field Guide to the Birds was first published. More than mere coincidence, Don and Roger shared a lot in common. Both men were born in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School. Both served in the Air Force. Most importantly, they both shared a lifelong passion for birds.

While Roger pursued his love of birds through art, Don chose a different path as an environmental scientist. After earning his BS and MS in Microbiology, Public Health and Virology from Michigan State University, he earned his PhD in Epidemiologic Science and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan.

Following graduate school, Don wrote that he “was attempting to find a position in which I might merge my formal training in microbiology with my informal training in ornithology.” Subsequently, during his tenure at the Marine Sciences Research Center, SUNY Stony Brook, Don turned his focus to studying the influence of hydrocarbons and pesticides on birds and their habitats. Throughout his long career as a senior environmental scientist, in government and in the private sector, Don was frequently called upon to interpret environmental legislation to assist federal agencies – always with an eye toward protecting birds and wildlife.

In retirement, in addition to travelling the world to see birds, Don received the Bronze Winner Volunteer of the Year by the US Department of Interior for his volunteer work at the Red Rock Mountain National Conservation Area, near his home in Las Vegas.

In 2015, reflecting his lifelong passion for birds, Don acquired an insurance policy and named RTPI as the sole beneficiary. Don paid the annual premium, for which he received a tax deduction. Upon his passing in June 2024, RTPI received a payout of $500,000. RTPI’s Board of Directors honored Don’s gift by using it to establish the Don Powers Reserve Fund, to help sustain and grow the organization into the future.

Don’s legacy lives on at RTPI in another way, as well. Thanks to the generosity of his cousins, Lana and Duane Vangeisen, Don’s original Charley Harper lithograph of a cardinal is now a part of the Peterson Collection at RTPI.

For his final resting place, Don chose to return home. He is interred at Sunset Hill Cemetery in neighboring Lakewood. His headstone reads, “Soaring High with his Beloved Birds.”
