The state of Minas Gerais is divided into 853 municipalities and crossed by the springs of some of Brazil's main rivers. The state is also strategically positioned in the country in terms of water resources, with a tropical climate ranging from cold and humid in the south to semiarid in the north. All these factors combined favour the existence of a rich fauna and flora, distributed across the biomes that comprise the state – mainly the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest ecoregions.

The state of Minas Gerais is also recognised for its strong coffee, cachaça and iron ore production.
