Introduce the girls to how more women need to take control of their financial future. Direct the class to turn to the U.S News & World Report article “Women Can Close the Gender Wealth Gap by Investing” (on pg. 15 of the Student Workbook and the Index in this Instructor Manual). Read and discuss it aloud. (7 minutes)
Activity: Case Study Information
Introduce students to the process of conducting a case study and a stock analysis. Then either as a whole group or in small groups have students watch the stock analysis video examples or a portion to give them an idea of what they will be presenting in Session 5. Please reiterate to students that they will be conducting a stock analysis on a smaller scale and only focusing on certain key areas since this is a new concept to them.
Case Study Activity: Janella Sims
Introduce students to the case study activity and task they will be completing in groups. Inform the students that over the following weeks, each group will assume the role of financial advisor for Janella Sims, a fictitious 39-year-old professional, who has $100,000 to invest.
They will work over the remaining sessions to conduct a case study and stock analysis on either Walmart (WMT) and Target (TGT) or Amazon (AMZN) and Shopify (SHOP) to make a recommendation to Janella on how she should invest her money in these companies.
Assign the students to groups of 4 or more each, and have them make note of their groups (and each other’s contact info), in their Student Workbook.
Then either have the groups choose which two stocks they would like to compare or assign each group he two stocks to focus on. If you do let students choose, make sure that half of the groups are researching one option and the other half of the groups are researching the alternate option. (The options are either Walmart vs. Target or Amazon vs. Shopify - they can’t just choose any of the 4 stocks) (15 minutes)
If Time Allots, Allow Students to Start Their Case Studies
Instruct the students to start analyzing the data and reading the set of articles in the index at the
end of the Student Workbook. Make sure they know they should only analyze the data or read the articles about their two stocks.
Remind them to take notes on the Case Study Worksheet.
Please remember to take a few photos of the students and/ or volunteers during the sessions and send to:

AFTER SESSION 2: Important Activities Before Session 3
During the week ahead, spend some time exploring the following activities before returning for Session 3.
1. Complete any activities or read any articles you weren’t able to finish in Session 2.
2. Thoroughly review and get to know the key terms. We want students to remember these long after RTSWS is over and all students will be taking a post-assessment in Session 5 to see how much they’ve learned. So make sure they study these!
3. If you haven’t yet, connect with us on social media! We post current articles, internship and job shadowing opportunities, and even highlight our students and community publicly.
