COACHING STAFF HEAD COACH • SIXTH SEASON
JEFF “CJ” WERNEKE Jeff “CJ” Werneke enters his sixth season at the helm of the Rutgers women’s volleyball program in 2013. After an extremely successful stint at Fairfield, Werneke arrived “On the Banks” in 2008 with hopes of building a strong volleyball foundation at Rutgers. Through his first five seasons, Werneke is well on his way as his teams have seen more consistency in the win column. This past season, Werneke helped Rutgers to double-digit wins for the fourth-straight season and an 18-12 (4-11 BIG EAST) record. The 18 wins for the Scarlet Knights marked the most since the 2000 squad recorded 23, while the four conference victories were the most since the 2005 team totaled six. Rutgers also notched its first winning season since the 2004 team went 1610. The team picked up two conference road wins, one over Georgetown (Sept. 30) and one over St. John’s (Oct. 28), marking the most since the 2005 Scarlet Knights also collected two. The win over the Hoyas was the first conference road win since Rutgers downed South Florida on Oct. 31, 2010.
The Scarlet Knights have also excelled in the classroom under Werneke’s tutelage. In two of Werneke’s seasons, the Rutgers University volleyball team was recognized for its outstanding academic achievement as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) awarded RU with an AVCA Team Academic Award for posting a combined team grade point average of above a 3.30. Prior to his first season as head coach at Rutgers, Werneke had an extremely successful tenure at Fairfield, where he left as the school’s all-time winningest coach. In 2007, Werneke broke the 100-win plateau for his career and currently has a 134-144 overall record. He was named the 2006 and 2007 MAAC Coach of the Year, and led the Stags to four consecutive MAAC regular season titles. In 2007, Fairfield finished with a 21-13 overall record and a 17-1 mark in conference play. Werneke also coached 11 All-MAAC honorees, two MAAC Rookies of the Year, a MAAC Offensive Player of the Year and back-to back Setters of the Year while with the Stags. Before heading to Fairfield, Werneke served as an assistant coach at Rutgers from 1999-2001 under Anne Leonard-House. While an assistant at Rutgers, Werneke served as the recruiting coordinator, handled all scouting, game day operations and travel operations.
In 2011, Werneke led the Scarlet Knights to their third-straight season with double-digit wins, compiling 10 on the season. The Scarlet Knights put together a 7-6 record at home. The 11 victories in the 2010 season were the most for RU since the 2005 season. In 2009, Rutgers finished with a 10-19 record. RU’s 10 wins equaled the total amount of victories the squad had in the three previous seasons combined. RU also won its first tournament title since the 2004 Patriot Invitational when it won the Bucknell Invitational Title. In his first season at RU, Werneke led an extremely young Scarlet Knights squad through a demanding schedule that included 17 road games and 14 BIG EAST contests. Although the Scarlet Knights garnered only two wins on the year, the experience that the youthful squad gained could prove to be vastly important in the future.

LINDSEY LEE
Lindsey Lee returns for her sixth season on the Scarlet Knights coaching staff in 2013. Prior to taking the job as an assistant coach at Rutgers, Lee had a decorated career playing under CJ Werneke at Fairfield. “I have known Lindsey since she was a junior in high school and after coaching her for four years at Fairfield, she has been great to work with as a colleague,” said head coach CJ Werneke. “Not only does she bring her knowledge and passion for the game to our staff, but her competiveness has been a major asset to our program.” Lee was a four-year standout at the outside hitter position for Fairfield. The Hilo, Hawaii native was the MAAC Rookie of the Year and named First Team All-Conference during her first year in 2004. During her junior campaign, Lee was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year and was once again a First Team All-Conference selection. She ended her career holding the Fairfield records in both digs (1,647) and digs per game (3.88). She was only the fifth Stag in school history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. Additionally, Lee has gained valuable coaching experience working with girls, ages 12-17, at Nike Volleyball Camps in Fairfield, Conn. She has also worked with junior players in her hometown of Hilo and has been coaching at the club level at the Atlantic Valley Volleyball Club in New Jersey the last two years.

COACHING STAFF ASSISTANT COACH • THIRD SEASON
RACHEL REFENES Rachel Refenes enters her third season as an assistant coach in 2013. She was hired by Rutgers on March 25, 2011. “Having Rachel here for a third year obviously advances the camaraderie and the continuity in the staff,” said head coach CJ Werneke. “She’s increasing her role, heading up our recruiting efforts, our blocking systems on the court and working with our middles. I’m really looking forward to having her on our staff for years to come and working with her from here on out.” Refenes came to RU after spending the two seasons as an assistant coach at Binghamton. While with the Bearcats, Refenes helped the program reach new heights as they advanced to a pair of America East tournaments and won the America East Championship in 2009, earning an NCAA Tournament bid in the process. The Menomonee Falls, Wis., native arrived at Binghamton after serving as the top assistant at Lehigh University in 2007 and 2008. Prior to her coaching the Mountain Hawks, Refenes served as the head coach of the Wisconsin Jrs-18 Blue squad based out of Kenosha, Wis.
first and second on the program’s all-time single season list for the rally scoring era. After transferring to Ball State for her junior and senior seasons, Refenes shined, putting together two of the best seasons in Cardinals’ history. As a junior, she ranked eighth in the nation in blocks per game (1.67) and was named to the All-MAC Second Team, as well as an honorable mention on the AVCA All-Midwest team. She followed up her strong junior campaign with an even stronger senior season, as she was a First-Team All-MAC selection and was named to the AVCA All-Midwest team. Refenes was also chosen to the AVCA All-American Honorable Mention squad and picked up an honorable mention CVU.com Stellar Spikers accolade as well. Following her collegiate career, Refenes played professional volleyball for Nova KBM Branik in Maribor, Slovenia. Refenes graduated from Ball State in the spring of 2006 with a bachelors’ degree in liberal arts and has minors in history and psychology. In January 2013, Refenes married Andy McCauley from Allentown, Pa. McCauley is currently a Minor League baseball manager for the Evansville Otters of Evansville, Ind.
Refenes enjoyed a decorated playing career at Ole Miss and Ball State. She spent her first two years of college at Mississippi, where her sophomore and freshman year block totals still rank

2013 OUTLOOK RUTGERS VOLLEYBALL MEDIA GUIDE
2013 SEASON OUTLOOK The Rutgers volleyball team begins the 2013 regular season Friday Aug. 30 at the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. RU returns a wealth of experience, with three starters including the libero and 11 letterwinners coming back. The squad welcomes six newcomers to the roster as well.
teams we haven’t competed against before. The preconference schedule is as difficult of a schedule as we have had since we’ve been here. We’re going to be road warriors, which is going to be challenge for us. I think the conference is up for grabs with so many new teams as well as some familiar faces. “
Rutgers is coming off one of its best seasons in recent history. In 2012, sixth-year head coach CJ Werneke led the Scarlet Knights to double-digit wins for the fourthstraight season and an 18-12 (4-11 BIG EAST) record.
The squad’s first test comes at the Indiana Invitational (Aug. 30-31). RU takes on Kent State on Friday, Aug. 30 before playing future Big Ten opponent and host Indiana on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights close the tournament with a 2:30 p.m. Saturday matchup with Robert Morris. Rutgers will meet the Colonials for the first time in school history.
The 18 wins for RU marked the most since the 2000 squad recorded 23, while the four conference victories were the most since the 2005 team totaled six. Rutgers also notched its first winning season since the 2004 team went 16-10. The Scarlet Knights look to build on the 2012 team’s success, returning plenty of experience and talent to the 2013 roster.
SCHEDULE Rutgers has compiled a challenging schedule for the 2013 campaign, participating in four tournaments throughout the season. RU will face one team that made the 2012 NCAA Tournament, taking on conference-foe Louisville twice. The slate is marked with 32 total matches, including 18 American Athletic Conference contests. The Scarlet Knights will host 10 matches at the College Ave. Gym, participate in 13 true road contests and play in nine neutral site matchups. Additionally, RU will face five teams which they have never played before in program history. “We’re very excited about the schedule,” said Werneke. “We’re in a new conference competing against some

Rutgers then travels to New York to participate in the Syracuse Invitational. The Scarlet Knights take on Oakland and the host Orange on Friday, Sept. 6, before concluding the tournament against Colorado and Stony Brook on Saturday, Sept. 7. RU holds a 2-0 all-time record against the Seawolves and takes on both the Grizzlies and the Buffaloes for the first time. The Scarlet Knights host Seton Hall for their home-opener on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. Rutgers is 19-16 all-time against the Pirates. RU next travels to its last two tournaments; participating in the Delaware Invitational (Sept. 13-14), before heading to Pittsburgh for the Panther Invitational the following weekend (Sept. 20-21). In Delaware, RU takes on the Blue Hens on Friday (Sept. 13), before meeting up with Furman and Sacred Heart on Saturday (Sept. 14). It will be Rutgers’ 24th matchup against Delaware. RU faces Morehead State and former BIG EAST foe Pitt on Sept. 20, closing the Panther Invitational on Sept. 21 against Cornell.
2013 SEASON OUTLOOK The Scarlet Knights return home for their conferenceopening weekend, hosting Houston (Sept. 27) and SMU (Sept. 29). Rutgers is scheduled to play the Cougars for just the second time in program history and will meet the Mustangs for the first time. The team then hits the road for five-straight conference road matches, starting with USF (Oct. 4) and UCF (Oct. 6) in Florida. RU closes its first American road trip with UConn (Oct. 11), Memphis (Fri. 18) and Temple (Oct. 20). Rutgers welcomes Louisville (Oct. 25) and Cincinnati (Oct. 27) then heads to Texas to take on the Mustangs (Nov. 1) and Cougars (Nov. 3) for the second time of the season. Matching its five-game conference road slate earlier in the season, the Scarlet Knights host five home matches in the middle of November. RU hosts UCF (Nov. 8), USF (Nov.10), UConn (Nov. 15), Temple (Nov. 22) and Memphis (Nov. 24). The squad closes the regular season on the road, traveling to Cincinnati on Wednesday Nov. 27 and Louisville on Friday Nov. 29.
NEWCOMERS The Scarlet Knights added six freshmen to the 2013 roster, all coming to the Scarlet Knights with experience and success at the club level. The newcomers come from five different states, adding depth at each position. OH Micaela Anderson (La Canada, Calif.), MB/RS Dulce Duran (Austin, Texas), DS Alyssa Ensminger (Aurora, Ill.) and MB/OH Sarah Richardson (Germantown, Tenn.) add to the two signees, MB Lauren Cloyd (Champaign, Ill.) and OH/RS Cole Trimble (Orlando, Fla.), which were announced in December.
OUTSIDE HITTER Rutgers returns a lot of young talent to the outside hitter position, including sophomores Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) and Megan Stephenson (Burbank, Calif.). Lassa led last year’s squad with 3.43 kills per set (sixth in the BIG EAST), while earning BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition once. She posted 11 double-doubles on the season. In 48 sets last season, Stephenson was second on RU’s roster with 2.67 kills per set. “We have two sophomores coming back who gained a lot of experience last year,” said Werneke. “Alex is a true six-rotation, front court, back court player who can impact the game in multiple areas from passing, to defense, to serving, to blocking, to attacking. Megan has one of the best arms if not the best arm in our gym. She has a cannon for an arm.”
RIGHT SIDE The right side returns two players who have experience and have performed at a high level in their Rutgers careers. Both are coming off of injuries from a season ago, but are proven commodities for the Scarlet Knights. Junior Sofi Cucuz (Crown Point, Ind.) missed the entire 2012 season, but finished second on the team with 263 kills in 2011. Senior Brittany Bozzini (Saratoga, Calif.) played just 23 sets last season, but ranked third on the team with 225 kills in 2011.
“This class is deep,” said Werneke. “There is a lot of versatility. Any time you bring in six people, you’re going to add depth to a lot of different positions. All of them come in with a very high level of experience at the high school and club level, playing in multiple national championships and with several accolades individually and team-wise. We’re excited about adding another wave of youth, athleticism and experience and we will see how each of them will contribute over their careers.”
9
2013 SEASON OUTLOOK Sophomore Kelli Mullane (Fullerton, Calif.) also returns after developing as a freshman and looks to be in the mix. “The right side is a question mark for us moving into the fall and season,” said Werneke. ”Hopefully by the end of the preseason and preconference play, we will have a little better understanding of where they are coming off their injuries.”
MIDDLE BLOCKER In the middle, the Scarlet Knights lose Alex Jones, who capped her career in 10th place on Rutgers’ career kills list, compiling 917 putdowns in four seasons. Junior Rachel Andreassian (Fredericksburg, Texas) was one of four players on the team to play in all 119 sets last season. She switched from right side to middle blocker in the spring and looks to help fill the position. Sophomore Mikaela Matthews (San Diego, Calif.) made strides training in her freshman year “We lose two starters from last year, so a lot of experience and a lot of statistics that are going to be gone,” said Werneke. “We feel that Mikaela had a great freshman year, even though she was just training. She really developed this spring and showed great improvement, especially in the two spring tournaments. She’s going to be in the mix there. Rachel, who played right side last year, moved back to the middle this spring and we really liked some of the things we saw.”
SETTER Rutgers looks to replace four-year starter Stephanie Zielinski, who finished second on RU’s all-time lists in career assists (4,255) and assists in a season with 1,342 helpers in 2012. Junior Nicole Bayer (Concord, Ohio) and sophomore Anna Sudbury (Tomahawk, Wis.) each return after learning the team’s system last season. The two have different qualities and will have an open competition for the spot in preseason camp. “Anna is a really physical, technical setter and Nicole is more of a leader, feel setter,” said Werneke. “At some point we’re going to need both of them throughout the season. There are a lot of options for us and both of them give us those options so we’re excited about that. “
10
DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST Defensive specialist returns a wealth of talent in what may be the deepest position on the court for the Scarlet Knights. Junior Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) comes back after leading the squad in digs, coming up with 356 in an injury-shortened 2012 season, seventh on Rutgers’ single-season list. Sophomores Ronnie Komisarek (San Mateo, Calif.) and Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) gained valuable playing time in strong freshman campaigns, as Komisarek played in 100 of the 119 total sets and Schroeter saw time in 81 of them. Junior Taylor Nelson (Great Falls, Va.) comes back from injury and made the transition from setter to defensive specialist to provide even more depth. “Tracy had a great year until she got injured. We’re looking forward to her being back to her natural self,” said Werneke. “Ali and Ronnie had great freshmen years. They showed a lot of leadership and the ability to impact a match from a passing and defensive standpoint. Taylor brings some competitiveness and eagerness to get back after missing a year and a half of play. We will be excited to see the energy she brings as well.”
OUTLOOK “We have enough talent to win,” said Werneke. “I think we showed that last year going five sets with a number of top teams in the conference and across the country. I think one of the biggest pluses for us is we are a team. Each night, we’re going to win and lose as a team. Not one individual is going to win for us and not one individual is going to lose for us. Our strength is that we’re a pretty diverse team. We don’t rely on one position over another. For us to be successful, everybody has to do their job and do it to the best of their ability.”

2012 SEASON REVIEW The Rutgers volleyball program had its best season in recent history, tallying a record of 18-12 (4-11 BIG EAST). The season marked the fourth-straight year that head coach CJ Werneke has led the Scarlet Knights to double-digit wins in a season. Multiple players left their mark on the program’s record books, as well. The 18 wins for the Scarlet Knights marked the most since the 2000 squad recorded 23, while the four conference victories were the most since the 2005 team totaled six. Rutgers also notched its first winning season since the 2004 team went 16-10. 31, 2010. The Scarlet Knights received strong play and leadership from its seniors, while the freshmen and newcomers came in an made in impact early. Eight newcomers started matches for the team, including two transfers earning starts. Overall, Rutgers finished third in digs (16.71/s), fourth in service aces (1.30/s), fifth in digs (13.41/s) and fifth in assists (12.55/s) in the BIG EAST. Senior Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) recorded 21 double-doubles in 2012, tallying 50 or more helpers 12 times. Zielinski finished the campaign with 1,342 assists and 4,255 for her career, both second on Rutgers’ all-time lists. She moved into eighth on the single-season digs list with 351 this season and finished the year fifth in the program’s history with 1,129 for her career. Her 11.28 assists per set ranked second in the conference. She also earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors (Sept. 17) and was named to the conference’s Weekly Honor Roll three times (Oct. 22, Oct. 15 and Sept. 3). The setter was also named the Rutgers Invitational MVP. Classmate Alex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) capped her career in 10th place on the career kills list, compiling 917 in four seasons. The senior was named the Spartan Classic MVP, and she earned spots on the Rutgers Invitational and Penn Invitational All-Tournament Teams. Rookie Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led the team with 379 kills and 89 blocks, while finishing her first season third on the single-season hitting percentage list with a mark of .355, the third-best mark in the BIG EAST. Schmid was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Sept. 17, while also earning a Weekly Honor Roll spot on Sept. 10. She was named the Penn Invitational MVP and earned spots on the Hurricane Invitational and Spartan Classic All-Tournament Teams. Fellow freshman Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) led the team with 3.43 kills per set (sixth in the league), while earning BIG EAST

Weekly Honor Roll recognition (Aug. 27) and a spot on the Hurricane Invitational All-Tournament team. She finished the season with 11 double-doubles. Defensively, junior Tracy Wright (Fair Lawn, N.J.) was the squad’s digs leader, coming up with 356 in an injury-shortened season, second on Rutgers’ singleseason list. She averaged 4.45 digs per set, ninth in the BIG EAST. Rutgers jumped out to a 14-1 start to the season, the best start in program history. During that span, the Scarlet Knights won 12 straight contests, the longest streak since the 1983 team had 12. With a 4-11 conference record, Rutgers finished tied for 12th in the BIG EAST. The Scarlet Knights opened in Miami, Fla., at the Hurricane Invitational. There, the season commenced with a victory over Samford (Aug. 24), who had been an NCAA Tournament team the previous season. In the win streak, Rutgers notched all seven of its sweeps in a span of nine games. The first sweeps came against Iona and New Hampshire at the Rutgers Invitational on Aug. 31 and the last came on Sept. 14 against Radford. Not only did the Scarlet Knights play well in three set matches, but the squad picked up victories in all five of its five-set matches during non-conference play. Through the whole season, Rutgers won seven of 10 overall. In that mix was a match against Wofford (Aug. 24) where Rutgers trailed 2-0. Despite falling behind, the Scarlet Knights rallied for the victory. It marked the first time that the team came back from a two-set deficit to win since beating Seton Hall on Oct. 15, 2010. In non-conference play, Rutgers won three of its four tournaments, including the Rutgers Invitational (Aug. 31-Sept. 1), the Spartan Classic (Sept. 7-8) and the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational (Sept. 14-15). The Scarlet Knights started BIG EAST play with three straight losses, but rebounded with a home victory over Syracuse in four sets (Oct. 12).The win marked the first time Rutgers beat the Orange since Oct. 10, 2003. It also gave the team 16 victories, guaranteeing it would have a winning season for the first time since 2004. Following that victory, Rutgers continued to show improvement taking Marquette, the second-best team in the conference, to five sets before dropping the match. The squad picked up back-to-back five-set victories at St. John’s (Oct. 28) and versus DePaul (Nov. 3). Notre Dame came next (Nov. 4), and the Scarlet Knights were able to take the opening set from the Irish. It was the first time Rutgers took a game from Notre Dame since Oct. 4, 1998 and was just the second time overall. Rutgers made many strides in 2012 and accumulated a wealth of experience for the 2013 season. The program is on the rise and has laid the foundation for seasons to come.

ROBERT L. BARCHI is the 20th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Since beginning his tenure on September 1, 2012, President Barchi has been overseeing preparations for integrating into Rutgers most units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, as outlined in the recently adopted New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act. He has begun work on a university strategic plan (the first in more than 15 years) and was part of a statewide coalition of university, business, and labor leaders urging voter support of a $750 million bond act for higher education construction, which was approved by a wide margin in November. President Barchi announced on November 20, 2012 that all intercollegiate athletic teams on Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus will join the Big Ten Conference at a date to be determined.

PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY
DR. ROBERT L. BARCHI PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY growth in neuroscience, encompassing the intellectual activities of more than 120 faculty members. Dr. Barchi founded the Department of Neuroscience at Penn and served as its first chair; he also served as chair of the Department of Neurology. He was named the Fairhill Professor in 2002, a position that he still holds in emeritus status.
From 2004 to 2012, Dr. Barchi served as president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, nationally regarded as a top university dedicated to health sciences education and research. Prior to Jefferson, he was provost and chief academic officer of the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution founded in 1740. There, he had responsibility for Penn’s 12 schools, all academic programs, athletics, students, and faculty. Dr. Barchi was born in Philadelphia but spent his formative years not far from Rutgers in Westfield, N.J. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Georgetown University, and Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed specialty training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and holds board certification in neurology. Throughout his career, Dr. Barchi has been active as a teacher and as an NIH-funded researcher in the fields of neuroscience and neurology, and he has published extensively in his field. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his pioneering research on the structure and function of voltage-gated ion channels in nerve and muscle, and on the role these critical molecules can play in human disease. He was also elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians and named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Neurological Association, and the American Academy of Neurology. In 1972, Dr. Barchi began his academic career as a faculty member at Penn. Within a decade, he rose to become the David Mahoney Professor of Neurological Sciences. Between 1983 and 1996, he served as director of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences— an interdisciplinary, universitywide entity that he expanded to become the focus for Penn’s
The University of Pennsylvania named Dr. Barchi as its provost and chief academic officer in 1999, and he served in this capacity until 2004. As provost, Dr. Barchi had responsibility for the university’s 12 schools and their academic programs and budgets and Penn’s intercollegiate athletics program, as well as for Penn’s students and faculty. During his tenure, he worked with president Judith Rodin to reassert the primacy of the academic mission in the direction of the university. He recruited new leadership to nine of the 12 schools at Penn and established a number of universitywide interdisciplinary educational and research institutes. He also led the university through a comprehensive strategic planning process. As president of Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Barchi oversaw a period of tremendous growth. The university established three new schools—including the Jefferson School of Pharmacy, which graduated its first class in May 2012, and the Jefferson School of Population Health, the only school in the nation to offer a master’s degree in chronic care management. Overall student enrollment increased by 51 percent and annual degrees awarded rose by 54 percent. Dr. Barchi also expanded the reach of the campus, inaugurating the Partnership in Healthcare Education, an academic affiliation with the University of Delaware that offers dual-degree programs between the two institutions. Other accomplishments at Jefferson include successful implementation of an ambitious strategic plan that integrated the university’s clinical, education, and research missions; a comprehensive facilities master plan that supports those missions; and a major fundraising campaign that provides the resources necessary for success. During Dr. Barchi’s tenure, Jefferson established 22 new endowed professorships and 50 endowed scholarships, helping to ensure a healthy and diverse community of faculty and students. The university surpassed $300 million in fundraising under
his leadership, twice the amount raised during the preceding eight-year period. During his presidency, Dr. Barchi also oversaw the transformation of Jefferson’s urban environment into a vibrant university campus. A coordinated construction program, coupled with improved landscape design and signage, helped provide visitors and the Jefferson community a sense of place and connectedness to the compact urban campus in the heart of the city’s historic district. Dr. Barchi is married to Francis Harper Barchi, a tenure-track faculty member of the Rutgers School of Social Work. Before coming to Rutgers, she was a senior fellow in the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was engaged in education and research activities relating to international research ethics. Francis Barchi holds a Ph.D. in social welfare, a master’s in bioethics, and a master’s in nonprofit leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a bachelor’s degree from Smith College. She is the former executive vice president of the Dana Foundation in New York, a post she assumed following a 20-year span as president of her own company, which provided protocol and strategic communication services for international clients. Francis Barchi’s research focuses on the social and behavioral factors that influence women’s health in southern Africa. In 2009, she completed the first major quantitative study on women’s autonomy and genderbased violence in Botswana, and she is the principal investigator on a study in that country examining the extent to which women’s understanding of HPV and cervical cancer influences their decision-making about prevention and treatment. She is currently part of a team responsible for ethics training of health professionals in Botswana, Tanzania, and Guatemala. As an avocation, President Barchi is an expert in the history and mechanical development of clocks and watches. In addition to collecting and conserving examples of these timepieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, he designs and constructs his own precision clocks in his basement machine shop. The Barchis, who have four adult children and one young dog, spend their leisure time at their home in coastal Maine where they are avid boaters and hikers.
