Why Scarlet? The color scarlet was first proposed in the campus newspaper, The Targum, in May 1869. It was adopted shortly thereafter. The color was chosen because it is striking and because good scarlet ribbon could be easily obtained. The trustees adopted scarlet as the school color in 1900, making Rutgers University one of the first colleges in the U.S. to have an official school color. Through the years, Scarlet has become embodied in the literature and songs of the college. It is identified with its sons and daughters, and is highly emblematic of the college itself.

Why Knights? Since its days when Rutgers was officially known as Queen’s College, the athletic teams were referred to as the Queensmen. Officially serving as the mascot figure for several football seasons beginning in 1925 was a giant, colorful felt-covered costumed representation of an earlier campus symbol, the “Chanticleer.” It remained the nickname for some 30 years. In the early 1950’s, in the hope of spurring both the all-around good athletic promise and RU fighting spirit, a campus wide-selection process changed the mascot to that of a Knight. By 1955, the Scarlet Knight had become the new Rutgers mascot.

Rutgers Stadium – the home of Scarlet Knights football – is the centerpiece of RU’s facilities. A 102-million dollar expansion completed in 2009 increased the capacity of the stadium to 52,454. A 7,656-square-foot football recruiting lounge and welcome center was built on the mezzanine level in the new south end zone of the expanded Rutgers Stadium. In addition, the project welcomed nearly 1,000 premium club level mezzanine seats in a suite setting. Connected and adjacent to Rutgers Stadium is the Hale Center. It is the home of the Scarlet Knights’ football team and houses training, administrative and academic resource personnel. A 14,262-foot weight room is equipped with over 100 machines and free-weight stations, as well as a 60-yard FieldTurf track. Interactive digital classrooms, computer lab, video room and a 150-seat theater for use with game preparation and academics highlight the amenities. The building also houses a state-of-the-art training with the latest medical equipment and a wet room with hot and cold tubs and a Hydroworks treadmill. In addition to football, the facility houses the offices of the field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s lacrosse and men’s lacrosse teams. The Louis Brown Athletic Center, or The RAC as it is often called, is home to the Rutgers men’s and women’s basketball programs. Opened in 1977, the Louis Brown Athletic Center is one of the great arenas in the nation to watch exciting college basketball. This 8,000 seat arena has been dubbed, “louder than a 757 from nearby Newark. Most fans and students still refer to this truncated pyramid, which lies on the northern end of the Livingston campus, as “The RAC,” which is short for Rutgers Athletic Center, the original name of the facility. The RAC was named the second-loudest arena in the nation by cbsportsbeat.com. Several renovations are currently undergoing at the RAC. The Bauer Track and Field Complex – home to the Rutgers track and field program and the field hockey team - is one of the finest outdoor facilities in the nation. Located directly behind the Louis Brown Athletic Center and dedicated in April 1996, the facility boasts eight track lanes, two shot put circles, four long/triple jump runways, two discus/hammer cages, two pole vault runways, two javelin runways and sprinting and hurdling areas on either side of the track. In 2009, the inner oval was renovated with Astro Turf 12 to accommodate field hockey games. Adjacent to the Bauer Track and Field Complex, are Bainton Field and the Softball Complex - home of Rutgers baseball and softball. The single largest one-time cash gift by a living donor - Ron and Pat Bainton – gave the program a new state-of-the-art FieldTurf playing surface. It al-

lows the Scarlet Knights to practice on the field year-round. The on-field facilities for the 1,500 seat stadium include a practice diamond and three full length batting cages, as well as five practice pitching mounds. Located next door to Bainton is the RU Softball Complex, home of the squad since 1984. Yurcak Field is home to the Rutgers soccer and lacrosse programs. Dedicated on April 16, 1994, the stadium is officially named “The Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium at Yurcak Field” in honor of Ronald N. Yurcak, a 1965 All-American Rutgers Lacrosse player who made a generous donation to the university. Featuring a 120’ x 75’ grass playing surface, the stadium is complete with state of the art irrigation and drainage systems. The fully lit stadium houses 5,000 fans in its spacious grandstand and is capable of holding several thousand more across the field in the stadium’s picnic area. Once the home of the Rutgers basketball team, the College Avenue Gym has matured into a quality facility for several indoor sports. Known as “The Barn” because of its distinctive look, the College Avenue Gymnasium is the home site for Scarlet Knights wrestling and volleyball matches. A capacity crowd of 1,200 fans, who are right on top of the action, serve a dual purpose - to inspire the Scarlet Knight team and to create an intimidating atmosphere for RU opponents. The Rutgers wrestling team’s practice facility - a 3,200 square foot room – is also housed in the College Avenue Gymnasium. The Rutgers swimming and diving program has found a home at the Rutgers Aquatic Center, located in the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center on the Busch Campus. The building houses a competitive-size pool, which measures 50 meters by 25 meters in width. It also has one movable bulkhead, separating the swimming and diving areas. The pool has eight Olympic standard lanes. For collegiate and NCAA meets, the pool area can be converted to eight NCAA standard lanes with 10 warmup lanes. The diving area consists of two one-meter springboards, two three-meter springboards, and a 10-meter diving tower. There are three takeoff platforms which are five, seven and a half, and 10 meters in height. The depth of the diving area is 17 feet at its deepest and six feet at its shallowest. The tennis facilities feature 12 all-weather varsity courts, six of which were completely renovated and resurfaced in 1997. A tennis house is adjacent to the courts, complete with a space for game-film viewing, team meetings, and classroom instruction. Access to indoor courts at the Busch Tennis Bubble, located on campus, and local racquet clubs round out the team’s indoor practice and competitive needs. The complex is located adjacent to Rutgers Stadium, next to the Hale Center.

The Office of Academic Support Services for Student Athletes (ASSSA) is dedicated to assisting men and women athletes at Rutgers University in the dual role of being a student and an athlete. With a commitment to helping student-athletes reach their academic goals, the office helps student-athletes prepare for their future while competing at the highest level of amateur sports. The Academic Services Program was developed to enhance the learning opportunities for student-athletes while attending Rutgers University. The program provides learning support in a variety of subject areas and levels. Any studentathlete on a current roster is eligible for academic services and each athlete is assigned an academic advisor to aid in their path to success and a college diploma. Tutoring services are offered as an additional resource to help student-athletes strive for their maximum potential. Tutoring is particularly helpful during seasons of team travel. Four Rutgers teams received public recognition from the NCAA for top academic performance for their multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores in May 2010. It marked the third-consecutive year that the Scarlet Knights’ football, women’s tennis and men’s cross country programs were cited by the NCAA, while women’s gymnastics was honored for the first year. The Rutgers football program was the lone state university on the list to be ranked in the top 10 percent nationally in APR for the third straight year. The Scarlet Knights were one of only four institutions that played in a bowl game and ranked in the top 10 percent of the APR in 2009-10.

The Rutgers strength and conditioning program is designed to enhance and improve athletic performance, and in turn lead to team success. Far beyond lifting weights and running intervals, the strength and conditioning program at Rutgers gives student-athletes a competitive edge. The goals of the program are simple; to build strong, well-conditioned athletes who can perform to the best of their ability and to the expectations of the coach. Endurance and strength are program goals, as are an increase in speed, power and agility. However, nothing could be more critical than staying healthy, one of the main goals of the strength and conditioning program. Lean muscle mass helps athletes avoid injury and heal more quickly if an injury does occur. When muscles are strong, they are prepared to support the whole body through rigorous and intense competition. That is why the training occurs long before the season begins and continues year-round. Training in fully equipped and spacious weight rooms at both the Louis Brown Athletic Center and the Hale Center, the strength and conditioning staff develops and implements a comprehensive step-by-step program for each individual studentathlete based on their particular needs. A year-around proposition, the Scarlet Knights train to increase their strength, foot speed, hand/eye coordination, agility and flexibility during the summer and preseason. Many athletes train on campus during the summer, and those who train at home have a detailed workout plan to follow, because it is during the offseason that most of the gains are made. During the season, the program is designed to maintain the gains made in the summer and preseason. Interval training is a large part of the in-season regimen that maintains strength and conditioning while preserving the players’ energy for competition. A team of athletic trainers and doctors work daily with Scarlet Knight student-athletes, committed to offering the best in sports medicine and comprehensive health care. Injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation are some of the primary focuses of the Rutgers sports medicine staff. Each team is assigned an athletic trainer who provides on-site evaluation and treatment if an athlete should become injured, immediate first aid care, follow-up rehabilitation care, and specific conditioning programs for injury prevention. Student-athletes can receive treatment at three sites on the Rutgers campus. The Hale Center is the main athletic training room, conveniently located near the Team Physician’s Office in case further follow-up is needed. The other athletic training rooms are located in the lower levels of the College Ave Gym and the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

Liz Tchou

HEAD COACH 8th season, Iowa, 1988

Entering her eighth season, Liz Tchou is as passionate about Rutgers Field Hockey as she was when she accepted the position in April of 2003. A former New Jersey scholastic star, Tchou has continually kept the top talent in the state while directing the program to steady growth each and every season. Once one meets Tchou, you can’t help but notice her enthusiasm and excitement; the same thrill that led her to All-American status at the University of Iowa and a successful stint with the U.S. Field Hockey National Team. The same enthusiasm is shown when it comes to the success and molding of the young women, off the field. Over the last three years, 42 athletes have earned BIG EAST Academic honors and 16 have been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad. Tchou’s recruiting classes have all made impacts on the field. The 2006 first-year crew contributed an astounding 43 points (five goals, 14 assists) of the team’s total 103 points while the 2005 class put up 25 points (10 goals, five assists). Tchou has also seen her student-athletes have personal success on the field. Recently graduate Amy Lewis became the first Rutgers player since 2003 to earn BIG EAST First Team accolades. One of the most prolific players to ever don the Scarlet and the all-time leaders in goals and points, Lewis was named the 2008 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and also was tabbed the recipiant of the BIG EAST ScholarAthlete Excellence Award in field hockey. During her first season at the helm in 2003, Tchou helped develop Jennifer Noon into a First Team all-BIG EAST honoree. The season was highlighted by conference wins over Syracuse and Providence, which helped the Scarlet Knights advance to the BIG EAST Tournament in Chestnut Hill, Mass. RU posted six victories in 2004, seven in ‘05 and six in ‘06. The team reached the eight-win plateau in 2007 and topped that success in ‘08, recording 14 wins - the most for the program since 1997. Tchou joined the Scarlet Knights after serving as the head coach at Duke University for seven seasons (1996-2002). During her tenure with the Blue Devils, she amassed a career record of 76-67 and led the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2002 quarterfinals.

12

Named the 1996 ACC Coach of the Year following her first season, Tchou kept the Blue Devils in the upper echelon of collegiate

field hockey, consistently maintaining a spot in the nation’s top 15. Teaching her players to be role models in the classroom as well as on the field, Tchou mentored 22 academic All-Americans during her time at Duke. Before assuming the head coaching position at Duke, Tchou spent two seasons as an assistant with the Blue Devils. She also served as an assistant coach for two years at the University of North Carolina in 1991 and 1993. Tchou sandwiched a one-year stint at the University of Virginia between her two seasons in Chapel Hill. Tchou started her coaching career closer to home as an assistant coach with Temple University for two seasons, beginning in 1989. Tchou’s field hockey coaching success stems from her standout

career at the University of Iowa, where she was a four-year letterwinner (1984-87). A four-time All-Big Ten midfielder, she earned All-America status in 1987 and was a part of the NCAA All Tournament Team that same year. Tchou was a part of three Big Ten championships and three NCAA Final Four teams, including the 1986 national championship squad. A standout in the classroom as well, Tchou received the Big Ten’s Medal of Honor for excellence in academics and athletics and was named to the Big Ten All-Academic Team. As a senior, Tchou was nominated for the Honda-Broderick Sports Award, which goes to the outstanding woman athlete of the year in NCAA competition, as chosen by a panel of college athletic directors. The crowning glory of her successful collegiate career was becoming the first female Hawkeye to have her jersey number (No. 3) retired. Tchou was later inducted into the University of Iowa’ Athletic Hall of Fame. Tchou’s playing days did not end when she received her degree in communication studies from Iowa in 1988. Instead, she started a 10-year association with the U.S. Field Hockey National Team. Beginning as a reserve with the 1988 squad, Tchou played internationally for the U.S. at the Intercontinental Cup (1989, 1993), the Pan-American Games in Cuba (1991) and Argentina (1995), the World Cup in Ireland (1994), the Olympics in Atlanta (1996) and the Champions Trophy in Germany (1997). Tchou’s accolades both scholastically and with the national team earned her recognition as the Player of the Decade (1980’s) by the Camden Courier-Post. Following the Champions Trophy in 1997, Tchou retired from the National Team to join her teammates on the sideline as a member of the U.S. Field Hockey coaching staff. Tchou began her coaching career with U.S. Field Hockey while playing with the National Team, spending 12 years as an Olympic Development Program coach. She worked with the Under-21, Under-18 and Under-16 squads. From 1997-2001, she served as the head coach at the A-Camp National Field Hockey Trials. In 1999 and 2000, Tchou was the U.S. Under-16 National Team head coach. Tchou continues to coach at several camps nationwide, including the U.S. Field Hockey Futures Development Invitational Camp and the Junior National Camp where she worked with the U-16 and U-19 teams. Last summer, Tchou taught Level I coaching courses in Florida, Missouri and Connecticut. In addition, Tchou continues to share her talents at Futures as a Level I coach the past six years.

Tchou was the first female Hawkeye to have her jersey number (No. 3) retired.

An alumna of Shawnee High School in Medford, N.J., Tchou married Brad Lewis in January of 2005, and the couple resides in Somerset.

Haley Exner First Season

Haley Exner begins her first season on the sidelines with the Scarlet Knights. She will work primarily with the Rutgers goalkeepers. Exner, a San Diego, Calif. native, served on the UC Davis staff last season, assisting in all aspects of the Aggies program. She previously was a member of the coaching staff for one season (2008) at her alma mater, Indiana, where she assisted in the development of the Hooisers’ defense. Her duties included skill and technical growth of the goalkeepers. Collegiately, Exner closed her Indiana career as the program’s all-time winningest goalkeeper. She was a three-time first team All-Big Ten selection and twice chosen an All-Region honoree. Not only the career leader in wins (38), Exner also is the career IU leader in goals against average (1.54) and piloted the Hoosiers to their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2005. She holds two of the top three single-season goals against averages in Indiana history, including a 1.34 GAA in 2006. Following her senior season, Exner was named Indiana University’s Female Athlete of the Year, was a member of the Division I All-Star Team and the recipient of the 2008 Big Ten Medal of Honor, which is given annually to a student in the graduating class of each Big Ten university who demonstrates proficiency in scholarship and athletics. Exner is a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and the United States Field Hockey Association. She serves as a goalkeepers coach for Futures Elite Level 1.

2010 Outlook With the return of 11 letterwinners from a year ago and an immensely talented recruiting class, the Scarlet Knights are looking to the 2010 season with tremendous optimism. While most of the offensive firepower from 2009 was lost to graduation - 21 goals and 12 assists in total - head coach Liz Tchou is extremely excited with her young team. The Scarlet Knights boast just two seniors on their roster, heavily laden with 13 underclassman. “They are making each other better every day in practice, the new combined with the older players,” said Tchou. “This is probably the most competitive group we have fielded. Every single player will get an opportunity to compete.” Despite the lack of upperclassman, the eighth-year head coach is excited about her team’s leadership, which will largely be supplied by tri-acpitains seniors Jenna Bull (Oakville, Ontario) and Heather Garces (Cream Ridge, N.J.) and junior Mackenzie Noda (Allentown, Pa.). “What I love about Heather, Jenna and Mackenzie is they don’t force anything. Their leadership is based on motivation, giving their teammates information on how we can be better as a team and more cohesive. That, to me, is the best and most productive leadership.” Rutgers was picked to finish sixth in the highly competitive BIG EAST in a preseason vote of the league’s head coaches – more of a motivating factor for the Scarlet Knights. As in years past, the schedule is anything but simple. The arduous slate features five teams ranked in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association preseason poll and five more receiving votes.

“The chemistry is there and I think that will carry us far,” Tchou added. “We have the ingredients, but just need to put it all together.” Backs “We will have a bit of an inexperienced backfield, but we will be very skilled in these positions,” Tchou said. “I think the experience they gain this year will be invaluable.” Junior Amanda Sawasky (Lawrenceville, N.J.) is what Tchou calls a ‘tireless competitor.’ Having started 12 games in 2009, Sawasky will be looked upon to help secure the backfield. Noda, who appeared in 13 games with five starts, played significant minutes a season ago and enjoyed an extremely successful spring for the Scarlet Knights. She is in the mix for a starting position in the RU backfield. A bevy of freshmen enter with astonishing skills, just needing to acclimate to the college system. Freshmen Laura Rose (Washington Township, N.J.) and Emily Strong (Medford, N.J.), both extremely skilled, will look to gain experience and earn a place on the backline. They are joined by another exceptional freshman in Kaitlyn Plouse (Hummelstown, Pa.). Also looking to add consistency to the defense will be Ashley Yanek (Northampton, Pa.), a sophomore who saw time in six games last season. Rutgers has a pair of goalkeepers on its roster. Sophomore Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.) has a year of experience in the cage under her belt and Tchou expects that to translate to

more communication with the line in front of her this season. Newcomer Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) could also be called upon for action. Midfield Bull will anchor the midfield for the fourth-straight year. An impact player from the day she stepped onto the Rutgers campus, the Ontario, Canada native has started 54 of 57 games over three seasons and is a two-time BIG EAST second team performer.

Gina Nappi (Fairfield, N.J.), a freshman with a multitude of U.S. Field Hockey experience, has great vision – expected to be capitalized on a very young front line. Lisa Patrone (Sewall, N.J.) and Danielle Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.), newcomers from the Garden State, will also vie for time on the front line. “Overall we will be more attack-oriented and more aggressive on offense and defense,” said Tchou. “Our returning players have a greater knowledge of the game, understanding what a year can do for you. I like our group of wide-eyed freshmen and what they bring in energy and athleticism.”

Bull recorded five goals and a pair of assists last fall, the most of any returning player. Another returning starter in the midfielder is junior Kat Rodziewicz (Ocean, N.J.), who started 15 contests a year ago, including the last six-straight and 13 of last 14. Junior Christie Morad (Marlton, N.J.) got eight starting nods and a great deal of playing time in 2009. With her depth and skill set, she could see action in both the midfield and on the back line. Also expected to compete for time in the midfield are juniors Bridgette Sands (Glassboro, N.J.) and Kristen Higa (La Verne, Calif.). The duo are greatly improved and possess a tremendous amount of leadership. The Scarlet Knights welcome transfer Cornelia Duffin, who will likely be a starter. The Moorestown (NJ) High School product arrives “On the Banks” from the University of Maryland where she competed on a national championship squad.

Vickie Lavell

“We will look to be a more attacking team this season,” Tchou said. “We have been focusing on our controlled attacks inside the 25. I think we are a much more fit team this year and we have a lot of players that can interchange from position to position.” Forward “We look to have the forwards shuffling in and out this season, working on finishing inside the 25 (yard circle),” Tchou notes of the front line. “It is exciting to see them improve and have more coordinated movement on the field.” Junior Nicole Gentile (18 games, three starts) took 11 shots last season and will be looked upon to put stick on ball even more in 2010. The Jamison, Pa. native has greatly improved her finishing and in preseason has found a niche working with Duffin.

A pair of sophomores showed signs of brilliance in their first collegiate campaign. Chelsea Rota (Langhorne, Pa.) and Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.) hope to contribute even more so to the forward unit in their respective second season. Rota saw action in 14 games in 2009, while Rouh earned nine starts in 16 contests.

BIG EAST Conference The 2010-11 academic year will be the 32nd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2010-11 year will mark the conference’s sixth straight with the same 16-member group, the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2009-10 year was no different. Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Award as the nation’s top female student-athlete. She also was named the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American of the Year for women’s basketball. Moore was the fifth BIG EAST women’s studentathlete to win the Honda-Broderick Award. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut women’s basketball team won its second straight national championship and its seventh overall crown. The Villanova women’s cross country team also won the NCAA title. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team reached the NCAA College Cup for the second straight year. The Syracuse women’s lacrosse squad reached the Final Four. On the men’s side, West Virginia’s basketball team became the BIG EAST’s 16th team to reach the NCAA Final Four and won the conference’s academic achievement award. The Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA championship game. Individually, three BIG EAST student-athletes won NCAA titles. Cincinnati’s Josh Schneider won the 50 freestyle in men’s swimming. In track, Louisville’s D’Ana McCarty repeated as the NCAA indoor winner in the weight throw. Louisville’s Matt Hughes won the 3,000 steeplechase. Another Cardinal, Austen Childs, was the national runner-up in men’s tennis singles.

BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group. Cincinnati won its second straight league championship in 2009 and compiled an undefeated regular season. The Bearcats finished third in the final Bowl Championship Series standings. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record. Rutgers, one of the bowl win-

ners, also was recognized for having the nation’s highest NCAA APR rating, which measures academic success. The BIG EAST has continued to produce studentathletes who are at the forefront of athletic and academic achievement. In 2009-10, 22 BIG EAST players from 10 schools were chosen to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams. Over 400 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 28 national championships in six different sports and 128 student-athletes have won individual national titles. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 12 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 11 NCAA titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. In 2009-10, the BIG EAST added men’s lacrosse to its growing list of sports, which increased its total to 24 sport championships. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators

and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. In 2009-10, the BIG EAST had one significant change. Tranghese stepped down from his position on June 30, 2009. John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner’s chair and continued to steer the conference on its path of success. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past seven years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. More than 575 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. Olympic Sports Hall of Fame Heidi Faith - Induction Class of 2002 A native of Princeton, N.J., Faith was inducted into the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Faith holds two RU single-game records -- goals (six) and points (12). She achieved both milestones as a senior in 1976. In 1973, she was named to the New Atlantic AllConference First Team and repeated the feat in 1975. After her career at Rutgers, Faith went on to earn a bronze medal at the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival in 1981 as a member of the U.S. National Team.

Heather Jones - Induction Class of 2000 One of the most decorated field hockey players in Rutgers history, Jones was inducted into the Olympic Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. Jones capped her career off in 1993 by setting the school single-season records for goals (28) and points (59). Her 59 points were also an Atlantic-10 record. For her efforts, she was named to the 1993 CFHCA All-America Team and was a two-time Regional All-America selection (1991 and 1993). The Atlantic-10 Freshman of the Year in 1990, Jones was voted RU’s Best Offensive Player in 1993 and the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1991 and 1993. During her senior season, Jones led RU to a 14-8 record and the school’s first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament victory (5-0 over Rhode Island). To cap her playing career, Jones was selected to play in the North/South All-Star Game in 1993.

Elizabeth Ferrara - Induction Class of 1998 A Collingswood, N.J., native, Ferrara entered the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. RICHARD L. MCCORMICK PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on the Rutgers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington. Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American public research universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning experience for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems; diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the people of New Jersey. President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate education at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan, approved in 2006, merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expanded access to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popular First-Year Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no more than 20 students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty. Other initiatives undertaken during Dr. McCormick’s tenure include: • Establishment of the first-ever universitywide alumni body, the Rutgers University Alumni Association. • The Rutgers Faculty Traveling Seminar, an annual week-long tour of New Jersey for new faculty. • The Rutgers Future Scholars Program, a pilot project to encourage minority and low-income teenagers from the university’s host cities to pursue higher education by offering mentorship and college preparation support, and the promise of free tuition to those admitted to Rutgers. • Rutgers-Camden’s first-ever doctoral-level academic program, a Ph.D. in childhood studies – the first in the nation in this emerging discipline. • Establishment of the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers-Newark’s first new school in more than three decades. Born in 1947, President McCormick earned a B.A. in American studies from Amherst College in 1969 and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1976. He is married to Joan Barry McCormick, RU ’88. She is a Vice President at the Saint Peter’s Healthcare System in New Brunswick. Dr. McCormick has two children, Betsy and Michael.

TIM PERNETTI DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A lifetime New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former student-athlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Intercollegiate of Athletics on February 26, 2009. He will oversee 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the university’s peer institutions. The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has 212 employees and an annual budget of approximately $56 million, roughly 3 percent of the university’s total $1.8 billion budget. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a master’s degree in communication in 1995. Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all screens for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previously CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multimedia leader in college sports programming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008. Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creating multiplatform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigated through a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways to serve college sports fans. Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours of event programming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relationship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference.

In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media partnership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and under-served sports is evidenced by the network’s unprecedented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also

been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College Sports, and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches during game action. Prior to joining CBS College Sports Network, Pernetti served eight years at ABCTV and ABC Sports most recently as Director of Programming, where he was integral in acquiring, managing and developing several ABC Sports properties including college football, the Bowl Championship Series, and college basketball. For five years, Pernetti handled relationships and negotiated television rights with all of the major collegiate conferences. As a student at Rutgers, Pernetti was a four-year letterwinner at tight end on the Rutgers football squad. He was also the color commentator for Rutgers Football on the Rutgers Football Radio Network and announced weekly NFL games nationally on Sports USA Radio. A resident of Oakland, N.J., Pernetti is married to the former Danielle Bahto. His wife also graduated from Rutgers and was a letterwinner on the women’s lacrosse team. Danielle and Tim are the proud parents of their three children – Max, Conor and Natalie.
