SEASON OUTLOOK RUTGERS ROWING MEDIA GUIDE
2013/14 SEASON OUTLOOK
R
utgers rowing has its sights set on one goal for the 201314 season – an American Athletic Conference Championship. Head coach Max Borghard and the squad are headed to the Big Ten following the upcoming season, but for this group of seniors and coaching staff, there is no looking ahead.
“The fall season will give us excellent race experience, competing against a lot of the top-level teams,” Borghard said. “We’re going up to the Head of the Charles this fall and we haven’t been up there for the last couple years so I know the squad will be looking to race up there.
“Our goal is to win the first American Athletic Conference Championship at Mercer Lake,” Borghard said. “Our focus is this year. We’re not worried about our move to the Big Ten until next year.”
“We’ll be doing some small boat racing again in the fall and that will provide some good experience for the team, as well. It will really enhance their boat–feel skills.”
The squad, led by its three senior captains – Katie Bakaj (Longport, N.J.), Stef Ford (Nutley, N.J.) and Raelyn Loiselle (Tampa, Fla.) – improved its strength in the offseason and looks to build off that strength in both the fall and spring seasons.
RU opens its championship season on March 22 with a scrimmage against Villanova in Philadelphia, Pa. Less than a week later the Scarlet Knights get underway, welcoming both Michigan State and Boston University to New Brunswick for a tri-race.
Ten seniors will provide leadership for the 30-rower varsity squad, which competes in five races this fall and six in the spring.
“We’ll get a look at a Big Ten school with Michigan State coming to New Jersey for the first time,” Borghard said. “The Boston Races [April 5-6] will provide a good mixture, as well. Minnesota is going to be there, so is Buffalo. We get a little bit of a feel for the Big Ten early on so I think that is kind of neat.”
“The team came into the fall much stronger than the last two years and it looks to push the upper trend that we’ve been showing for the last few years,” Borghard said. “With the conference championships getting an NCAA bid and automatic qualifier to the rowing championships, it allows the rowers to see more clearly the avenue it will take to get to the NCAA Championships.” With Borghard entering his 20th season at Rutgers and associate head coach Heather Putnam and assistant coach Jessica Wojslaw continuing their long stints with RU, continuity is a huge strength of the program. “Having an experienced staff and knowing all the ins-and-outs of Rutgers will make it that much easier to just focus on our coaching throughout the season.” The Scarlet Knights begin their fall schedule on Oct. 12 at the Navy Day Regatta before competing at the squad’s marquee fall meet, the Head of Charles on Oct. 20. RU also hosts a meet on the Raritan River, holding the Rutgers Classic on Nov. 9.
Two of the Scarlet Knights’ final three meets of the 2014 season will be held in the Northeast, with a tri-race against St. Joseph and Navy on April 19 being held in Philadelphia, Pa. A week prior on April 12 the squad welcomes Rhode Island “To the Banks” for its second home meet of the spring. RU then closes its regular season on May 4 at the Eastern Sprints, held in Cherry Hill, N.J. The American Athletic Conference Championships follow on May 18 in nearby West Windsor, N.J., and the staff expects nothing less than the team to compete for a title. “I think each year the team understands a little bit better what it needs to do when it’s not here at school,” Borghard said. “I think it’s easy to train hard when they’re on campus and the coach tells them ‘do this, do that.’ But when they’re away and the responsibility is in their hands – I think each year they understand a little better.”
Borghard and Co. are excited to get significant Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 experience, while also working on the team’s small boat technique to enhance its boat skill. Along with the Rutgers Classic, the squad will compete in “The Garden State” two other times this fall at the Princeton Chase on Oct. 27 and the Collegiate Small Boats Regatta on Nov. 3.

HEAD COACH - MAX BORGHARD Max Borghard became the Before returning to his alma mater, Borghard coached at Head Coach of Rutgers Women’s Crew in 1995. Under his leadership, the Scarlet Knights have qualified for the NCAA DI National Championships three times, in 1997, 1998 and 2001. Rutgers was one of only eight teams in the country to earn a full-team bid to the first ever NCAA championships in 1997. In conference and league championships, his crews have amassed twenty-six Big East medals and four EAWRC medals. Borghard’s coaching philosophy is based on two mainstays: work hard and love the sport. As a result, his mentoring extends beyond the Rutgers boathouse. Sharon Kriz ’98 finished second at the 1997 U-23 World Championships as a member of the U. S. straight four and fourth at Senior Worlds in the U. S. women’s eight in 2005. Maite Urtasun ‘01, a two-time First Team All-American, made five senior national teams. In 2002, she was a world champion as a member of the U.S. women’s eight. Borghard has also mentored numerous All-Region ScholarAthletes and Big East Academic All-Stars, and several of his former athletes currently coach at DI collegiate rowing programs.
Dartmouth College from 1989 to 1995. He coached the Big Green freshman lightweights to a bronze medal at the 1990 Eastern Sprints and to gold in 1991. During the summer of 2013, Borghard helped coach the U.S. Under-23 National Team at the Women’s Olympic Training Center at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. On the national level, Borghard served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Junior Men’s National Team in 1991, 92 and 94. He coached the junior men’s double to a gold medal at the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival in Los Angeles and assisted with the junior men’s eight that won gold in Montreal, Canada in 1992. Borghard, a native of Long Island, NY, began rowing in high school under the tutelage of his father, Al Borghard. A graduate of Rutgers, he received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1987. He captained the Rutgers Lightweights his junior and senior years and stroked the varsity lightweight eight to back-to-back Eastern Sprints bronze medals those same years. Capping off a successful collegiate rowing career, Borghard was selected to two consecutive U.S. National Teams in 1986 and 1987.

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH - HEATHER PUTNAM Heather Putnam returned to Rutgers in 2008 as the Varsity Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. Putnam coached the Scarlet Knights Freshmen/Novice squad from 2002-06. In her two years away from the Banks, Putnam earned a Master’s in Education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and served as the Graduate Assistant for UMass Women’s Rowing. “She’s a really driving force,” said head coach Max Borghard. “She’s one that really pushes the limits higher and she’s very well organized. She’s a tremendous asset to this program and makes it go.” In her first stint with the Scarlet Knights, Putnam led the 2005 Novice Eight to a gold medal at the Big East Championship and a seventh place finish at the Eastern Sprints. Her crews also brought home Big East silver medals in 2003 and 2004 and a bronze medal in 2006. Prior to Rutgers, Putnam spent the 2001-02 season at the U.S. Naval Academy. Following a successful fall campaign
in which Navy’s Novice Women won the Navy Day Regatta, the Head of the Schuylkill and the combined men’s and women’s points trophy at the Princeton Freshmen Invite, the First Novice Eight went 15 and 1 in regular spring season competition. Both her First and Second Novice Eights then qualified for the Grand Finals at Eastern Sprints. Finishing 6th overall, the 2002 novices were Navy’s first ever women’s crews to qualify for an Eastern Sprints Final in an eight-oared event. Putnam served as an intern for the Princeton Lightweight Women from 1999-2001. Her 2001 novice lightweight eight won gold at the Eastern Sprints and both freshmen classes went on to contribute to IRA national titles in 2001, 2002 and 2003. During the summers, Putnam coaches the Princeton Tiger Rowing Camps and coached the 2013 William Smith U.S. Rowing Sculling Development Camp. A native of Massachusetts, Putnam graduated magna cum laude from UMass in 1998, with a B.A. in Comparative Literature. She was named a Helen Heath schol-

ACADEMICS RUTGERS ROWING MEDIA GUIDE
ROWERS DOING RESEARCH
RUTGERS RESEARCH Rutgers rowing is not just about excelling on the water, it’s about exemplifying dedication in the classroom and in life. Twenty-eight members of last year’s team qualified for the BIG EAST All-Academic Team – nearly the entire rowing roster. Many of those rowers continued their studies in the lab this past summer, conducting research that may one day change the world.
LOISELLE: Senior Raelyn Louiselle spent her summer investigating the hypothesis that mental and physical (MAP) training could increase heart rate variability in a group of homeless, addicted and sexually abused women. The MAP training involved meditation followed by exercise twice a week for eight weeks.
MONEME: Junior Chinoa Moneme worked the lab of Dr. Strair M.D. under Dr. Daniel Medina Ph.D at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. While there, her research focused on finding a better way to test drug efficacy using an in vitro model.
TOPP: Senior Emilia Topp studied the impact of deer, invasive species and climate change on forest vegetation in mature woods. Her vegetation surveys will map existing habitat conditions in order to compare historic data with current findings and to project future trajectories in forest composition. Junior Chinoa Moneme

T
he Class of 1914 Boathouse is located on the Raritan River, which separates the campuses of Cook, Douglass, and College Ave in New Brunswick from those of Livingston and Busch in Piscataway. It’s just a short walk down the hill to get to the boathouse from Cook and Douglass, and is easily accessible from all the other campuses. The boathouse was built in 1950 and is a gift of the Class of 1914. An addition was made in 1961 and today in houses over 20 boats. The boathouse also underwent renovations, most recently in 2010. Rutgers has top-of-the-line equipment, with brand new boats and oars coming in every year. In addition to eights and fours, we utilize small boats for training, including singles, doubles and pairs. The Raritan River provides an unlimited number of miles of water which are used almost exclusively by Rutgers Rowing. The tree-lined shoes are both beautiful and provide excellent win protection for rowing practices. Even on the windiest days, the Raritan is amongst the best courses in the country to row. Furthermore, due to milder winters than our northern friends, Rutgers rowing can stay on the water longer in the fall and get back on earlier in the spring. For land workouts, Rutgers offers a 16-person indoor rowing tank which allows rower to maintain their feel for the water during the winter training portion of the year. We have over 50 Concept II rowing ergometers which we use for building cardiovascular endurance and fitness. For weight training, Rutgers rowers receive personal attention from the University’s professional strength and conditioning staff, with access to state-of-the-art equipment located in the training rooms on each campus. The Rutgers strength and conditioning staff are some of the best around, having trained elite athletes such as the U.S. Women’s Soccer team and numbers NBA and NFL players. Rutgers athletes also have access to excellent sports medicine facilities. The trainers work one-on-one with injured athletes to treat them and keep them healthy. In case of sickness, athletes can see the special team physician and receive benefits such as free prescriptions. The crew also works closely with a professional sports psychologist to further enhance their mental training and potential.

ROWING HISTORY
W
o men’s rowing began as a club sport at Rutgers in 1974. A rising tide of interest, plus support from the men’s coaching staff and University, quickly led to varsity status for the women’s program in 1977.
As a result, Rutgers is one of the longest-standing varsity women’s rowing teams in the country. In the spring of 1977, Rutgers joined the Women’s Eastern Sprints League, now known as the Eastern Association of Women’s Rowing Colleges (EAWRC). The EAWRC is the oldest league nationally and the most competitive in the East coast. Another long-standing tradition at Rutgers is the Cornell/Penn tri-race. Rutgers won the first competition in 1978. At thirty years old, this one of the oldest continuously contested women’s races in the country. To commemorate this annual event, the Raritan Cup was introduced in April 1994. In the program for the inaugural race for the Raritan Cup on Saturday, April 16, 1994, it read, “Cornell, Penn and Rutgers women’s crew have competed annually in a triangular race for nearly the entire period of the modern era of women’s collegiate rowing; so the choice of a cup to present the winner of the women’s varsity race each year is quite appropriate to pay tribute to that tradition. The Raritan Cup is an inspiration for the oarswomen of all three institutions to continue this high level of competition for years to come.” Today, the varsity eights compete for the Raritan Cup and Class of ’89 Plate is awarded to the team with the most points. The first NCAA National Women’s Rowing Championships, held in 1997 in Sacramento, Calif., marked yet another milestone for Rutgers. Placing all three varsity boats – the first and second varsity eight and the varsity four – in the grand finals at Easter Sprints that season, his outstanding effort earned the Scarlet Knights a team bid to the national championship. Rutgers was one of only eight teams in the country to qualify for NCAAs as a team that inaugural year. The varsity four’s gold medal performance at Sprints in 1998 once again qualified Rutgers for NCAAs. In 2001, the first varsity eight capped an outstanding spring season with a seventh-place finish at Sprints and a bid to the national championship.

ROBERT L. BARCHI is the 20th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Since beginning his tenure on September 1, 2012, President Barchi has been overseeing preparations for integrating into Rutgers most units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, as outlined in the recently adopted New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act. He has begun work on a university strategic plan (the first in more than 15 years) and was part of a statewide coalition of university, business, and labor leaders urging voter support of a $750 million bond act for higher education construction, which was approved by a wide margin in November. President Barchi announced on November 20, 2012 that all intercollegiate athletic teams on Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus will join the Big Ten Conference at a date to be determined.

PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY
DR. ROBERT L. BARCHI PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY wide entity that he expanded to become the focus for Penn’s growth in neuroscience, encompassing the intellectual activities of more than 120 faculty members. Dr. Barchi founded the Department of Neuroscience at Penn and served as its first chair; he also served as chair of the Department of Neurology. He was named the Fairhill Professor in 2002, a position that he still holds in emeritus status.
From 2004 to 2012, Dr. Barchi served as president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, nationally regarded as a top university dedicated to health sciences education and research. Prior to Jefferson, he was provost and chief academic officer of the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution founded in 1740. There, he had responsibility for Penn’s 12 schools, all academic programs, athletics, students, and faculty. Dr. Barchi was born in Philadelphia but spent his formative years not far from Rutgers in Westfield, N.J. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Georgetown University, and Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed specialty training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and holds board certification in neurology. Throughout his career, Dr. Barchi has been active as a teacher and as an NIH-funded researcher in the fields of neuroscience and neurology, and he has published extensively in his field. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his pioneering research on the structure and function of voltage-gated ion channels in nerve and muscle, and on the role these critical molecules can play in human disease. He was also elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians and named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Neurological Association, and the American Academy of Neurology. In 1972, Dr. Barchi began his academic career as a faculty member at Penn. Within a decade, he rose to become the David Mahoney Professor of Neurological Sciences. Between 1983 and 1996, he served as director of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences—an interdisciplinary, university-
The University of Pennsylvania named Dr. Barchi as its provost and chief academic officer in 1999, and he served in this capacity until 2004. As provost, Dr. Barchi had responsibility for the university’s 12 schools and their academic programs and budgets and Penn’s intercollegiate athletics program, as well as for Penn’s students and faculty. During his tenure, he worked with president Judith Rodin to reassert the primacy of the academic mission in the direction of the university. He recruited new leadership to nine of the 12 schools at Penn and established a number of universitywide interdisciplinary educational and research institutes. He also led the university through a comprehensive strategic planning process. As president of Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Barchi oversaw a period of tremendous growth. The university established three new schools—including the Jefferson School of Pharmacy, which graduated its first class in May 2012, and the Jefferson School of Population Health, the only school in the nation to offer a master’s degree in chronic care management. Overall student enrollment increased by 51 percent and annual degrees awarded rose by 54 percent. Dr. Barchi also expanded the reach of the campus, inaugurating the Partnership in Healthcare Education, an academic affiliation with the University of Delaware that offers dual-degree programs between the two institutions. Other accomplishments at Jefferson include successful implementation of an ambitious strategic plan that integrated the university’s clinical, education, and research missions; a comprehensive facilities master plan that supports those missions; and a major fundraising campaign that provides the resources necessary for success. During Dr. Barchi’s tenure, Jefferson established 22 new endowed professorships and 50 endowed scholarships, helping to ensure a healthy and diverse community of faculty and students. The university surpassed
$300 million in fundraising under his leadership, twice the amount raised during the preceding eight-year period. During his presidency, Dr. Barchi also oversaw the transformation of Jefferson’s urban environment into a vibrant university campus. A coordinated construction program, coupled with improved landscape design and signage, helped provide visitors and the Jefferson community a sense of place and connectedness to the compact urban campus in the heart of the city’s historic district. Dr. Barchi is married to Francis Harper Barchi, a tenure-track faculty member of the Rutgers School of Social Work. Before coming to Rutgers, she was a senior fellow in the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was engaged in education and research activities relating to international research ethics. Francis Barchi holds a Ph.D. in social welfare, a master’s in bioethics, and a master’s in nonprofit leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a bachelor’s degree from Smith College. She is the former executive vice president of the Dana Foundation in New York, a post she assumed following a 20-year span as president of her own company, which provided protocol and strategic communication services for international clients. Francis Barchi’s research focuses on the social and behavioral factors that influence women’s health in southern Africa. In 2009, she completed the first major quantitative study on women’s autonomy and gender-based violence in Botswana, and she is the principal investigator on a study in that country examining the extent to which women’s understanding of HPV and cervical cancer influences their decision-making about prevention and treatment. She is currently part of a team responsible for ethics training of health professionals in Botswana, Tanzania, and Guatemala. As an avocation, President Barchi is an expert in the history and mechanical development of clocks and watches. In addition to collecting and conserving examples of these timepieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, he designs and constructs his own precision clocks in his basement machine shop. The Barchis, who have four adult children and one young dog, spend their leisure time at their home in coastal Maine where they are avid boaters and hikers.
