CHRYSTAL CHOLLET-NORTON HEAD COACH Chrystal Chollet-Norton enters her 24th season as head coach of the Rutgers University women’s gymnastics program. She was elevated to full-time status in July of 1999 after 13 seasons as a part-time coach.
During her tenure at The State University of New Jersey, she has made significant progress in moving Rutgers’ gymnastics program toward becoming a national power.
Since her first year as a Scarlet Knight mentor, Chollet-Norton has consistently upgraded the program and schedule, pitting her teams against strong Division I opponents, including Penn State, George Washington, Maryland, Alaska, New Hampshire, West Virginia, Towson and North Carolina, and is always looking to challenge her squad against other elite programs in an effort to showcase her program on a national stage. Known for her wealth of expertise in gymnastics, Chollet-Norton was recently appointed the NCAA Northeast Regional Advisory Chair. She was responsible for collecting and finalizing the team selection for the 2009 NCAA Northeast Regional qualifier. This is her second time holding this position as she also served from 2000-04. She is also on the EAGL Conference Committee as secretary for the Conference for the last five years.
In the classroom, Chollet-Norton’s student-athletes have seen unprecedented success. Last season, 12 gymnasts were named to the EAGL All-Academic team. She has more than 200 wins at Rutgers and is poised to build on that stellar mark with a plethora of talent returning in 2010, following injury-plagued seasons in 2008 and 2009. Despite the setbacks, Chollet-Norton sees promise in a young core of gymnasts that already have proven their worth as freshmen, highlighted by Danae Johnson’s All-American honor last winter. The 2007 team finished sixth in the highly-competitive East Atlantic Gymnastic League (EAGL) Championships and qualified for the NCAA Regionals as well as the USA Gymnastics (USAG) Championships.
Four members of her 2006 team earned First Team All-America honors at the USAG National Championships- further proof that Chollet -Norton’s teams are recognized on a national level and possess the talent needed to compete with the very best in the sport. The Scarlet Knights also enjoyed a standout season in 2005, as they were named USAG Collegiate National Champions. In addition to earning the championship crown, Stephanie Zick and Beth Fittery received All-America honors and Chollet-Norton was named the Coach of the Year. Rutgers was also one of six teams to qualify for the 2005 NCAA Northeast Regionals in Durham, N.H.
As a testament to Chollet-Norton’s success in nurturing well-rounded studentathletes, Zick and Fittery were also the recipients of the Rutgers Athletic Director’s Award. The award is given to the student-athlete, who has accumulated a grade point average of 3.50 or higher; earned All-America honors nationally or regionally during the year of award consideration; and has demonstrated leadership and character or performed community service, during her time at Rutgers.
In 2004, Chollet-Norton coached five RU gymnasts to the Northeast Regional. It was also a big year for the RU mentor on an individual note, as she notched her 200th career victory and 150th at Rutgers on Jan. 24 against James Madison.
In 2002, Chollet-Norton saw her program elevated into the national spotlight as Courtney Turner advanced to the NCAA National Championships in the floor exercise after tying for first at the Northeast Regionals at Penn State.
During the 1999 season, CholletNorton and the Scarlet Knights once again eclipsed many of the team and individual scoring records. As the season came to an end, the squad consistently set new marks in every meet, culminating in an unprecedented 193.875 mark — good for second place — at the USA Gymnastics National Invitation Tournament, where they upset the number-two seed, Bowling Green. Another milestone in the history of the program came in 1998, when Chollet-Norton and her squad traveled to Pittsburgh to participate in their first-ever NCAA Regional competition. Despite a seventh-place finish, it brought Rutgers well-deserved recognition from the gymnastics community. From 1998-2000, Chollet-Norton was awarded the Rutgers Director’s Award for the team with the highest cumulative grade point average. In 1995, she was instrumental in guiding Rutgers toward its affiliation with the EAGL.
Now an NCAA-affiliated league, the EAGL has become one of the premiere collegiate women’s gymnastics leagues. In 1998, Rutgers served as the venue for the league championship, one of the most successful championships to date, which set a league attendance record at the time. Prior to being named full-time at Rutgers, Chollet-Norton was a health and physical education teacher in the Bridgewater-Raritan school district for 26 years. In addition, she has been rated as an International Brevet Gymnastics official since 1980. The Brevet rating qualifies her to judge international competitions; she again passed the Brevet Course in Indianapolis, Ind., in July, 2009.
During the summer of 1986, Chollet-Norton served as a gymnastics judge at the United States Olympic Festival in Houston, Texas, and in 1987 she was a judge at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis. She again visited Indianapolis as a judge’s assistant for the 1991 World’s Gymnastics Championships, which was the preliminary for the 1992 Olympics. She also served as a Training Site Coordinator at the gymnastics events for the 1996 Olympics Games in Atlanta, Ga., where she was responsible for coordinating and overseeing the training schedules of all men’s and women’s participating teams. She played a major role in the daily operations of all training for the athletes during the months of July and August in the gymnastics venue. She has also served as a judge’s assistant at the 1998 Goodwill Games, held at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, N.Y.
A 1973 graduate of East Stroudsburg University, Chollet-Norton earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. While at East Stroudsburg, she was a four-year varsity letterwinner in gymnastics, competing on beam, floor, and vault. She received her Master’s Degree in Health Education from Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey) in 1975. Chollet-Norton later served as head coach of the school’s women’s gymnastics team from 1979-1986, and coached the Lions to the Division III Nationals and AIAW III Regionals and Nationals. Prior to her stint with the Lions, she served as head coach at Bridgewater-Raritan High School from 1973-79. During her 30-year career, she has compiled a 260-246-1 record, including a 223-221-1 mark in her 23 seasons at Rutgers. Chollet-Norton and her husband, James Norton, reside in Whitehouse Station, N.J.

2010 OUTLOOK The ingredients for a strong season are all in place as the gymnastics program embarks on a new year. The healthy return of several top veterans who were sidelined with injuries last season, coupled with the addition of a highly-touted class of newcomers gives the coaching staff excitement heading into the season. The senior trio of Laura Sevarino, Prishani Seebadri and Alyssa Lewandowski will serve vital roles and look to lead a young, but talented, program by example. A core group of 20 letterwinners return this season giving the Scarlet Knights depth in each event and pushing each gymnast during competition.
“This season will see a strong class of all arounders for the team,” said Chollet-Norton. “Laura has had a great pre-season and is looking good for the season. Nicole Schwartz stepped up last season when Laura was injured. Several members of the incoming freshman class could also perform in the all-around. All these girls will help to make our line-up one of the strongest we have had in several seasons.” VAULT
The return of top vaulter Laura Sevarino, Alyssa Lewandowski and Kiah Banfield will make this unit very strong. Danae Johnson, Maddie Zwiebel and Nicole Schwartz add experience, while freshmen Jenna Zito, Nicole Romano, Emma-Rose Trentacosti and Jayne Jeffreys could also see time on the vault during the season. Returning letterwinners Kerry Silverman and Stacy Ruderman will also be another force in a strong line-up of vaulters. “The vaulting team will have more depth and experience than in the past seasons,” said Chollet-Norton. “All three of our top vaulters have national level experience. The letterwinners will help lead the top freshman newcomers on vaulting to add the additional depth to this event. This the first season that our vaulting team will have the additional depth to take our program to the next level.”
SENIORS “As a coaching staff, we are excited to open the new season and challenge our team to reach new heights this year,” said head coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton. “We return a lot of gymnasts this year, including some veterans who were injured for most of last season. We are also anxious to see our talented newcomers compete at the collegiate level. We believe they can have success early on. If we stay healthy, we can have a very successful season.” ALL-AROUND
Senior Laura Sevarino and sophomore Nicole Schwartz each return with experience under their belts. Sevarino was the Scarlet Knights’ top all-arounder before ending her season prematurely due to injury each of the last two seasons. Newcomers Nicole Romano, Jenna Zito, Emma-Rose Trentacosti and Jayne Jeffreys could also perform in the all-around, which gives the Scarlet Knights great depth.

2010 OUTLOOK BARS Experienced competitors Laura Sevarino, Erica (Sunny) Gerlach, Nicole Schwartz, Kiah Banfield, Sara Woodward and Ellese Gold each return to the uneven bars line-up this winter. Senior Prishani Seebadri is also hopeful for a return in the uneven bars after knee surgery. Each will help guide a talented group of freshmen. Expect to see Jenna Zito, Nicole Romano, Jayne Jeffreys, and Emma Rose Trentacosti in the line-up this season. “This year’s bars line up will be one of young talent and experience,” said Chollet-Norton. “The veterans will help guide the freshmen who will round out the uneven bars team. The group of newcomers will add depth to this year’s team to this event. We are also hoping to see the return of Prishani back in the line-up. She is recovering from a early season surgery and is doing well getting her skills back. Her addition to the line-up will be an added addition in the middle of season to take this event to a possible team score of 49.” BEAM
The balance beam could be one of the most successful events for the Scarlet Knights again this season. Top returning letterwinners Laura Sevarino and Leigh Heinbaugh, who were out for the season a year ago, will be a great addition to the beam unit this year. Nicole Schwartz, Danae Johnson, Maddie Zwiebel, Brooke Schwamburger and Stacy Ruderman are also expected to have a major impact on the balance beam this year. Freshmen Jenna Zito, Nicole Romano, Emma-Rose Trentacosti and Jayne Jeffreys could all contribute to the unit as well.

pre-season. We also have a solid list of letterwinners returning on the balance beam. All these girls have USA Regional and National level competition which will add to the depth in this event. The team lost three great beam workers last year, but with our returning letterwinners and incoming freshman class, we will not lose a step on this event.” FLOOR EXERCISE
Returning letterwinners Laura Sevarino, Alyssa Lewandowski and Danae Johnson will lead a very talented group in the floor exercise. While Sevarino was sidelined with an injury, both Lewandowski and Johnson were USA National qualifiers last season. Johnson finished in the top-10 at the event and earned All-American accolades. Also returning are Nicole Schwartz, Maddie Zwiebel, and Kiah Banfield who expect to each contribute to a strong floor exercise program. Freshmen Nicole Romano, Jenna Zito, Emma-Rose Trentascosti and Jayne Jeffery also expect to compete in the floor exercise during the season. “Once again Laura will be one of our major leaders on floor exercise,” said Chollet-Norton. “We also expect to see great things from Alyssa and Danae on floor. The experience of all three of them in this event will help to lead our floor team. We have a strong group of returning letterwinners who will help to add to the depth in this event. We hope to see great performances from all of them. Once again, all these girls bring Regional and National level experience, which will help make the floor exercise one of our top scoring events.”
“We look forward to the return of Laura and Leigh,” said Chollet-Norton. “Both these team members were out with injuries last season and now are back healthy and have had a great GYMNASTICS 2009-10

2009 SEASON REVIEW The 2009 Rutgers gymnastics team persevered through injuries to its veteran all-around talents and saw its youth step in and contribute immediately and continue to build the Scarlet Knights’ program.
place finishes on the bars with season-high marks of 9.750 and 9.725, respectively. A season-high score of 48.325 on the beam gave RU a first-place finish in the event.
The influx of young talent added to the core of experienced gymnasts in a senior class that included Kristy Behr, Jessica Haddaway, Alison Hartwig and Latara Northcutt. Behr competed in every meet on the bars, while Haddaway was a regular in the lineup on the beam. Hartwig competed on both the beam and the bars in nearly every meet. Northcutt was one of the Scarlet Knights’ top allarounders before suffering an injury in the fifth meet of the season. She returned to compete in the vault the rest of the season, while also participating in the floor exercise and on the beam towards the end of the campaign.
Johnson bested her score in the floor exercise one meet later at Temple with a 9.750 to tie for second place in the event as Rutgers finished fourth against Towson, Bridgeport and the host Owls.
Headlining the freshman class was Danae Johnson, who finished her stellar rookie season as a Scarlet Knight with a 9.650 in the floor exercise at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals to earn First Team All-America honors.
Northcutt was one of four Scarlet Knights honored by the East Atlantic Gymnastics League at their annual banquet. She joined sophomore Erica Gerlach and freshmen Nicole Schwartz and Johnson on the AllEAGL team. Northcutt earned Second Team honors on the beam, while Gerlach was recognized for her achievements on the bars and Johnson and Schwartz were honored for their performance in the floor exercise.
While their performance in the gym reached new heights, the Scarlet Knights continued their standout effort in the classroom with 14 gymnasts earning All-EAGL Academic laurels, tied for the second-most in the league. The four members of the senior class combined to total 15 academic honors in their career.
After missing half of last season with an injury, top all-around competitor Laura Sevarino returned to form in the season opener at New Hampshire. She placed third on the balance beam, fifth on the bars and in the floor exercise, and sixth on the vault. She teamed with Northcutt to pace the Scarlet Knights at the event. However, the junior, who earned All-EAGL honors a year ago, was forced to miss the rest of the season after injuring her foot following the opening meet.
Northcutt took over as RU’s all-around competitor in the next three meets before suffering an injury herself during warmups. Freshman Nicole Schwartz stepped in as the Scarlet Knights all-arounder, competing in all four events in the final six meets with a career-high mark of 38.025 against Bridgeport and Alaska-Anchorage. That meet, which was broadcast live on RUTV, saw Rutgers post its highest score in two years with a 192.050 to place second in the tri-meet against a strong Alaska-Anchorage squad. Sophomore Kiah Banfield’s 9.775 led a stellar performance for RU in the floor exercise that included three scores of 9.700 or higher. Sophomore Erica Gerlach and Behr led the way with second and third-
After a fifth-place performance against a strong field at the Lyndsey Ferris Invitational in Washington, D.C., RU hosted Penn, William & Mary and George Washington in the first meet at the Livingston Recreation Center of 2009. The Scarlet Knights recorded a 189.050 to place second, led by Johnson’s 9.725 in the floor exercise and Northcutt’s 38.200 in the all-around.
In their third quad meet in a span of eight days, RU traveled to Morgantown, W. Va. to face West Virginia, George Washington and Maryland. For the thirdstraight meet, Johnson posted a career-high in the floor exercise, this time recording a 9.850 to finish in a tie for fourth place. Junior Alyssa Lewandowski had a 9.600 and Behr registered a 9.500 to lead RU in the vault at the meet. Rutgers opened the month of February with its second home meet of the season. RU hosted Pittsburgh and Yale, placing second with a score of 189.575. In what became routine, Johnson posted a career-high in the floor exercise with a 9.875 to take top honors in the event. Sophomore Kiah Banfield was right behind with a 9.750 to finish third. Junior Prishani Seebadri’s 9.725 on the bars was a career-best to place second. Schwartz competed in her first all-around with a 37.925. Led by Behr’s first-place finish on the bars, Rutgers downed Cortland with a 187.500 in the middle of February, followed by a fourth-place finish in a highlycompetitive meet at Penn State.
The Scarlet Knights’ senior class was honored March 7 in the final home meet of the 2009 campaign that saw Johnson once again steal the show with a 9.800 to take second in the floor exercise as Cornell edged RU in the meet. Rutgers rounded out the regular-season with a fifth-place showing at Towson where Lewandowski posted a 9.800 on the vault to place second overall and Banfield score a 9.650 to finish 11th. Gerlach’s 9.700 on the bars tied her for fourth overall.
The Scarlet Knights registered a 189.125, led by strong performances from Northcutt in the all-around (37.450) and Johnson in the floor exercise and on the vault (9.750 in both) and Lewandowski (9.725) in the vault to place eighth in the EAGL Championships in Raleigh, N.C. Injuries to several of the Scarlet Knights’ key competitors limited RU in 2009, but youth stepped in and provided a solid outlook for the future of the program.

LIVINGSTON RECREATION CENTER Rutgers Gymnastics entered a new home in 2001 with the completion of the training and competition areas at the Livingston Recreation Center. The training area is set up with two uneven bars, four beams, and a full-size floor for practice.
The gymnasium, which has served as a recreation facility for several years, has undergone an internal facelift to accommodate a new, 6,000 square-foot gymnastics practice facility with state-of-the-art training equipment. The Scarlet Knights have benefited from newly-designed enhancements to its facility in 2008 which provided optimal training conditions for the program. A brand new surface for the floor exercise and a newly-added in-ground tumbling pit has opened up the facility's layout and made it more conducive for training. New bleachers were erected in the facility which presents a pleasant experience for fans on the day of a meet. The facility will debut a new scoreboard in 2010 which will allow fans to follow the action more closely. The new facility allows the Scarlet Knights to train to their full potential, as well as helps attract some of the top gymnastics recruits in the country.

RICHARD L. McCORMICK PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on the Rutgers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington. Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American public research universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning experience for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems; diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the people of New Jersey. President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate education at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan, approved in 2006, merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expanded access to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popular FirstYear Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no more than 20 students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty. Other initiatives undertaken during Dr. McCormick’s tenure include: • Establishment of the first-ever universitywide alumni body, the Rutgers University Alumni Association. • The Rutgers Faculty Traveling Seminar, an annual week-long tour of New Jersey for new faculty. • The Rutgers Future Scholars Program, a pilot project to encourage minority and low-income teenagers from the university’s host cities to pursue higher education by offering mentorship and college preparation support, and the promise of free tuition to those admitted to Rutgers. • Rutgers-Camden’s first-ever doctoral-level academic program, a Ph.D. in childhood studies – the first in the nation in this emerging discipline. • Establishment of the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers-Newark’s first new school in more than three decades. Born in 1947, President McCormick earned a B.A. in American studies from Amherst College in 1969 and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1976. He is married to Joan Barry McCormick, RU ’88. She is a Vice President at the Saint Peter’s Healthcare System in New Brunswick. Dr. McCormick has two children, Betsy and Michael.

TIM PERNETTI
DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A lifetime New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former student-athlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Intercollegiate of Athletics on February 26, 2009. He will oversee 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the university’s peer institutions. The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has 212 employees and an annual budget of approximately $56 million, roughly 3 percent of the university’s total $1.8 billion budget. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a master’s degree in communication in 1995. Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all screens for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previously CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multi-media leader in college sports programming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008. Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creating multi-platform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigated through a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways to serve college sports fans. Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours of event programming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relationship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference. In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media partnership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and under-served sports is evidenced by the network’s unprecedented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College
Sports, and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches during game action. Prior to joining CBS College Sports Network, Pernetti served eight years at ABC-TV and ABC Sports most recently as Director of Programming, where he was integral in acquiring, managing and developing several ABC Sports properties including college football, the Bowl Championship Series, and college basketball. For five years, Pernetti handled relationships and negotiated television rights with all of the major collegiate conferences. As a student at Rutgers, Pernetti was a four-year letterwinner at tight end on the Rutgers football squad. He was also the color commentator for Rutgers Football on the Rutgers Football Radio Network and announced weekly NFL games nationally on Sports USA Radio. A resident of Oakland, N.J., Pernetti is married to the former Danielle Bahto. His wife also graduated from Rutgers and was a letterwinner on the women’s lacrosse team. Danielle and Tim are the proud parents of their three children – Max, Conor and Natalie.

A BRIEF HISTORY
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 27 degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and six schools offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and New Brunswick. Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 as Queen's College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in 1918, and the School of Education in 1924. In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University, a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number of schools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women when the New Jersey College for Women (later Douglass College) was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University College was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under the GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designated Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey. A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. An ambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a coeducational residential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the Graduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged. In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’ strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 62 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 180 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sciences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve life both in New Jersey and around the world. A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions and strengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences. With 27 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers over 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduates more than 10,000 students each year, and has more than 350,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jersey counties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century. Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university's goals for the future include the continued provision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society. GYMNASTICS SCORING GUIDE In collegiate team competition, six gymnasts perform in each of four events (vault, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and floor exercise). The five best individual scores per event comprise the cumulative team total. Collegiate competition requires at least two judges to evaluate the score of an athlete’s performance. The scores are averaged to arrive at a final mark. A perfect team score is 200, with top collegiate scores ranging between 190.00 and 197.00. Optional routines, choreographed by the gymnast to express herself through the skills she may perform best, are based on a score of 9.6 with an additional four-tenths (.4) for completing more difficult skills and/or combinations. Judges use the following categories to evaluate optional routines: Value parts (difficulty).................................... 3.00 Special Requirements................................... 1.20 Bonus Parts....................................................... 0.50 Composition ...................................................... 0.60 Execution ............................................................. 4.70-5.20 Total....................................................................... 10.00 VAULT The vaulting event requires speed, quickness and explosive power. Vaults are divided into four categories: handsprings, forward saltos, backward saltos and vaults from a roundoff. Each of these vaults is assigned a vault of up to 10.0. Deductions are taken from the starting value of the vault. Basis for deductions stems from technical errors in the areas of preflight (approach to the horse), repulsion (the rise of the horse), and the afterflight (distance and height from the horse). In 2001, the rules were modified so that each gymnast would be permitted to perform one vault for scoring purposes. This is a change from previous seasons, where gymnastics could perform two of the same or two different vaults, and were awarded the higher of the two scores. Due to safety concerns, in 2003 the design of the vault horse was been changed. It now has a larger top, allowing thegymnast more room to place her hands on the horse. It is referred to as the “tongue”, since that is what the new shape resembles.

GYMNASTICS 2009-10
UNEVEN BARS A complete routine on the uneven bars comprises some 10 to 15 moves, consisting mainly of swinging and suspension skills utilizing both bars with many regrasps. A change of direction is required in the routine, while pauses for concentration, extra swings and uncharacteristic elements are to be avoided. The gymnast must change bars at least two times, and must have at least two flight elements. As mentioned above under scoring, bonus parts worth up to 0.40 can be awarded for completing difficult skills. On this event, some of the bonus moves include somersaulting release moves, difficult pirouette work, and somersaulting mounts. BALANCE BEAM The routine must be composed of elements from the following groups: tumbling with and without flight; strength; and dance (i.e. turns, leaps, and body waves). Special requirements on the balance beam are a tumbling series, a leap or a large jump, a full turn and a series of skills combining dance and acrobatics. The routine must last between 1:10 and 1:30. Performing on the beam requires precise movement and intense concentration, as each ‘wobble’ results in a deduction. Elements performed on the beam that receive bonus points are somersaulting mounts, double-back dismounts, double turns, one-arm handstands, and jumps showing maximum flexibility. FLOOR EXERCISE Floor exercise is a combination of dance, tumbling and acrobatics performed to music. Creative and dynamic changes in rhythm and energy levels help to create an exciting routine where composition plays an important role. The exercise must last between 1:10 and 1:30. A routine consists of three tumbling “passes” and the gymnast must balance the difficulty of both her tumbling skills and dance skills and should finish the routine as strongly as it was started. Bonus points are awarded on this event for more than two twists in the same somersault, a double-back preceded by a front or backsomersault, a triple turn, and certain unique dance elements. Specific deductions are taken for stepping off the mat and for being out of sync with the music.
