LOUIS LEVINE HEAD COACH

Louis Levine, who has 10 years of coaching experience, enters his first season as the head coach of the Rutgers University gymnastics program after serving three seasons as an assistant coach on the Scarlet Knights’ staff. “We are excited to elevate Lou and continue the great strides the gymnastics program has made in recent years,” said Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti when Levine was hired on May 9, 2011. “Lou has shown great enthusiasm and a strong vision for the program. We have all the confidence he will bring this program to the elite level of collegiate gymnastics.” “I am extremely honored and excited for this opportunity,” said Levine. “I want to thank Tim and his staff for believing in me. I also want to thank former head coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton for her sincere mentorship these last three years. The sky is the limit for this program and I intend to build on the great strides we have made in recent years in taking the Scarlet Knights to the next level. New Jersey is a great area for gymnastics and we are the only Division I collegiate gymnastics team in the state. As a New Jersey native, I look to build a winning program with a great representation of our home state.” In his three seasons on the Rutgers staff, the Scarlet Knights have achieved great success. The 2011 squad established a school-record for victories in a season with a 19-8 overall mark and enjoyed its highest-ever finish and score (fifth and 193.625) in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships. Three gymnasts – sophomores Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.), Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) and freshman Luisa Leal-Restrepo (Cali, Colombia) – earned a berth in the NCAA Regionals, marking the program’s first representation in the regionals since 2007. Levine helped coach three gymnasts to All-EAGL honors including Leal-Restrepo, who was named the EAGL Rookie of the Year in her first season “On the Banks.” As a team, the Scarlet Knights improved their regional qualifying score by nearly three full points from the prior season to a mark of 193.265. RU posted the third-highest score in school history (194.35) and broke the school’s vault record (48.825) during the season. Levine helped recruit and worked with eight combined freshmen and sophomores who were major contributors in the lineup this past season. A native of Maplewood, N.J., Levine returned to his home state after three years as the Director of the International Gymnastics Camp in Stroudsburg, Pa. from 2005-08. He also coached at Surgent’s Elite School of Gymnastics in Roselle Park, N.J. from 2008-09. Levine spent time with the USA Gymnastics team in Daegu, South Korea where he was an assistant coach for the World University Games. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, where he served three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2002-04. Levine oversaw all

aspects of Michigan’s recruiting operations and helped organize the program’s operating budget. During his time at Michigan, he served on the planning committee for the program’s freshman student-athlete orientation program, helping mentor newcomers. While a member of the Wolverines’ staff, he coached 2003 NCAA Vault Champion Andrew DiGiore. He has coached several Junior National Team and Senior National Team members and a Junior National Champion in the All-Around. Levine competed on the vault during his time at Michigan where he helped guide the Wolverines to a pair of Big Ten titles in 1999 and 2000 and the 1999 NCAA Championship. He was a twotime recipient of the Coaches Appreciation Award. Levine received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 2002 and masters from the American InterContinental University Business School in 2006. A decorated gymnast, Levine attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J. He currently resides in nearby Springfield, N.J. THE LEVINE FILE

ASSISTANT COACHES/SUPPORT STAFF UMME SALIM-BEASLEY Assistant Coach

KERA BOLEN Assistant Coach

Umme Salim-Beasley enters her first season as an assistant coach.

Kera Bolen enters her first season an assistant coach.

“Umme brings the experience of being an elite level gymnast in addition to coaching experience from beginner all the way to the elite level and college level,” said head coach Louis Levine. “I am very excited to have her as an assistant here at Rutgers.”

“I’m really looking forward to this adventure and continuing to learn as I move forward in my coaching career,” Bolen told Oregon State upon her hire. “I went out to Rutgers and everything really clicked. Coach Levine’s coaching philosophy is in line with mine and I can easily see how we can run a program together. I feel ready for this next step and all that I’ve learned at Oregon State

Salim-Beasley brings impressive credentials to Rutgers, having competed collegiately at West Virginia, an East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) member, from 1995 to 1998. A native of Pasadena, Md., she was a two-time national qualifier at Hill’s Gymnastic Training Center in Gaithersburg, Md. before earning a full scholarship to West Virginia University. Making an impact right away, Salim-Beasley was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year as a freshman and earned spots on the All-EAGL First Team in all-around, bars and beam her sophomore and junior seasons. She finished off her career by being named the EAGL Gymnast of the Year and Most Outstanding Senior Gymnast in her final season in Morgantown in addition to winning the EAGL all-around, bar and beam titles that year. Her accomplishments also ranked her as the fifth-best gymnast in the country and as a finalist for the AAI Award in 1998. After graduating from West Virginia with a B.A. in Early Childhood Education, she went into coaching, starting as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. During her one season there, the team won the Ivy League Championships in addition to an undefeated regular season, breaking team records in every event.

has really prepared me.” “Kera comes from a top-level program with experience that is going to help our program,” said head coach Louis Levine. “I look forward to her contributions this year.” Bolen was a standout gymnast at the collegiate level. She comes to New Brunswick after spending the last two years as a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, Oregon State. A four-year letterwinner for the Beavers, she started as a walk-on, earning a scholarship by the end of her freshman year to eventually being named a captain as a junior. During her two years as a volunteer assistant coach in Corvallis, Bolen assisted the team with its strength and conditioning assignments, providing assistance with coaching on all four events with an emphasis on the balance beam. A native of Lake Oswego, Ore., Bolen earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise and Sport Science, with a minor in Psychology in 2009 from OSU. She was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection and earned honors as a Scholastic All-American from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC).

Salim-Beasley returned to Morgantown as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2006-07 season. For the past three years, she coached the Severna Park High School gymnastics team to two county championships, including an undefeated regular season in her first year. Additionally, she coached two different gymnasts to all-around championships. Salim-Beasley also was a teacher at Eagle Cove School in Pasadena, Md. for four years and is working towards a M.A. in Education from West Virginia University.

2012 OUTLOOK Coming off one of the most successful seasons in program history, Rutgers gymnastics starts a new chapter in 2012 with the elevation of Louis Levine to head coach. Levine brings 10 years of coaching experience, including having been an assistant coach for the last three seasons under former Rutgers head coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton who retired after a 25-year tenure at the end of the 2011 season. The program will look to continue making strides with one of the most talented teams in program history. “I am extremely honored and excited for this opportunity,” said Levine upon his promotion. “I want to thank [Director of Athletics] Tim [Pernetti] and his staff for believing in me. I also want to thank former head coach Chrystal Chollet-Norton for her sincere mentorship these last three years. The sky is the limit for this program and I intend to build on the great strides we have made in recent years in taking the Scarlet Knights to the next level.” Rutgers has the pieces in place from a team that won the most meets (20) in school history and posted a program-high score of 193.625 at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships with 16 returning gymnasts and four newcomers composing the 2012 roster. The squad hopes to challenge for a spot at the NCAA Regionals in April while breaking more school records in the process.

Umme Salim-Beasley. The duo also looks to bring Rutgers gymnastics to the next level by bringing their past experiences to Piscataway. Bolen was a standout at Oregon State and SalimBeasley was named EAGL Gymnast of the Year at West Virginia in 1998. The team will also turn to its tri-captains in senior Alexandra Belvis (Hinsdale, Ill.), junior Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) and junior Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) for leadership throughout the year. “These young ladies have done an excellent job throughout the fall leading by example,” said Levine. “Whether that example is hard work every day in practice or being there to help a teammate out when they need it, we know we can count on them to do what is in the best interest of the team.” The 2012 schedule features 11 total meets against 19 different teams in addition to the EAGL Championships at the University of Pittsburgh in March. RU will host five meets at the Livingston Recreation Center throughout the year. The February 25 meet versus Bridgeport, Air Force and Eastern Michigan will be “Alumni Day,” while the home finale against Towson and West Chester will be “Senior Day” on March 10. A school record of over 1,000 fans attended the last home meet in 2011. The team will also take trips to West Virginia, Penn, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Cornell and William & Mary during the season.

“We look forward to having a great season and want to continue to build upon the momentum of a record-breaking 2011,” said Levine. “We also want to show that we are a team to be reckoned with in the EAGL and earn a berth at the NCAA Regionals.”

“The EAGL is always a tough conference,” said Levine. “From the start of the season – right to the end – every meet counts the same. It is all about getting the best score you can each time out.”

Joining Levine on the coaching staff will be two former collegiate gymnasts with impressive credentials, Kera Bolen and

All-Around The Scarlet Knights have a very deep and talented group of all-

2012 OUTLOOK arounders this season, led by sophomore Luisa Leal (Cali, Columbia). Leal set the school record in her rookie season with a score of 39.375 on Feb. 26 versus Bridgeport and Ursinus on her way to being named First Team All-EAGL in the all-around and the EAGL Rookie of the Year. Zito also earned recognition as Second Team All-EAGL as an all-arounder with an average score of 38.260 throughout the season. Leal and Zito both qualified for the NCAA Regionals individually last season at the University of Michigan. Junior Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) and sophomore Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) are also expected to contribute in all four events in addition to newcomers Emma Hoffman (Union, N.J.) and Sara Skammer (Dallas, Pa.). “I believe we are very deep at all-around,” said Levine. “We have lots of experience and talent and I am expecting big things.” Vault Competition for the six vault slots runs deep for Rutgers. The team returns five of its top seven vaulters from a season ago when the team averaged 48.419. Leal (9.800) and Straub (9.668) led the team statistically in 2011, while Levine expects Zito, Romano, D’Elia and Gunzelman to compete strongly as veterans of the event. The Scarlet Knights should also see freshmen Anastasia Halbig (Schwenksville, Pa.), Hoffman and Skammer on the event in their rookie seasons. “We have potential to have eight 10.0 start values on the vault,” said Levine. “The depth of competition should help this team strive for new heights on this event.” Uneven Bars The Scarlet Knights return five of six competitors from a season ago on the uneven bars. The team averaged a score of 47.658 per meet in this event last season. “We have a very high level of gymnastics talent returning on this event,” said Levine. “Danielle D’Elia, Luisa Leal and Alexis Gunzelman all have potential to average 9.750 or higher. Combining them with juniors Jenna Zito, Jayne Jeffreys, Emma-Rose Trentacosti and sophomore Alyssa Straub provides us with a lot of experience returning on this event. When you add in the exciting routines of freshmen Emma Hoffman, Sara Skammer and Anastasia Halbig, this event has the potential to be outstanding.” Balance Beam “We have really put a lot of emphasis on being consistent and showing confidence on the balance beam during fall workouts,” said Levine. “We have such amazing depth on this event that it will be the most difficult event to make a lineup for.”

All six gymnasts from last season’s EAGL lineup return to the team, but as with other events, there is plenty of competition to crack the starting lineup. Among those expected to compete for time include graduate Leigh Heinbaugh (Sicklerville, N.J.), senior Nicole Schwartz (Somerset, N.J.), juniors Jayne Jeffreys (Jackson, N.J.), Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield, N.J.), D’Elia, Romano and Zito and sophomores Holly Murray (Harrisburg, Pa.), Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.), Gunzelman and Leal. Newcomers Kayla Mercado (Phillipsburg, N.J.), Halbig, Hoffman and Skammer are also gymnasts that could make the lineup in what should be a team strength this season. Floor Exercise The floor exercise, the event that allows for creativity and flair, should be very exciting this season with a plethora of talent on this event. Rutgers finished last season ranked in the top 25 and should be even better in 2012 with some upgrades to the team’s routines. The Scarlet Knights will miss the consistency of Kiah Banfield who graduated last year, but are excited to see Halbig, Hoffman and Skammer perform as newcomers on the floor exercise. Senior Danae Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.), Gunzelman, Leal, D’Elia, Romano, Straub and Zito are expected to lead the way with experience and accomplishments from prior seasons. D’Elia qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the event last season and Johnson was a 2009 USAG All-American. Floor was the strongest event for Leal as she averaged 9.831 on the season, ranking in the top 20 in the country. “This year’s floor lineup has the potential to excite the crowd with its extremely high level of difficulty and great showmanship,” added Levine. Outlook Rutgers gymnastics is extremely optimistic heading into the 2012 season with an abundance of talent and experience that has raised the expectations for the program. The squad has additionally earned numerous academic awards from various organizations for its strong performance in the classroom – something that the coaching staff emphasizes. With the raised expectations, the 2012 Rutgers gymnastics team has its goal set to reach to the NCAA Regionals as a team and to achieve new heights in each and every event. 2011 SEASON REVIEW The 2011 Rutgers gymnastics campaign will be filed away in the school’s record books as one of best in the history of the program. With a re-tooled outlook, the Scarlet Knights set their goals higher this season, striving to represent the University at the NCAA Regionals. The poise and the focus were there from the beginning and it resulted in record-breaking win totals and outstanding individual achievements all season long. The excitement of the start of the campaign was momentarily tamed when Chrystal Chollet-Norton, the Scarlet Knights’ mentor for 25 years, announced her plans to retire at the conclusion of the season. It was clear, the 2011 squad wanted to make Chollet-Norton’s last season “On the Banks” a memorable one. In the season’s first meet at New Hampshire on January 9, Rutgers sent out notice with a team score of 191.875 which was two full points higher than the previous year’s season average. That season-opening result was a harbinger of things to come for the program which posted an average score of 192.298. During the year, Rutgers registered a team vault score of 48.825, which broke the school record for the event. Freshman Luisa LealRestrepo highlighted the accomplishment with an individual school-record score of 9.875 on the vault. The Scarlet Knights’ best meet of the season came on a special day for the program. On March 5, the Livingston Recreation Center saw a school-record crowd of over 1,000 people on hand for the final career home meet for Chollet-Norton. It was also Senior Day for the program as RU’s seven seniors competed in their final career home event. The team sent its seniors and its head coach out in style with a season-high score of 194.350 to win a five-team meet against Cornell, Yale, West Chester and Central State. The score was the third-highest in school history. At the conclusion of the meet, the program honored its seven seniors and had a special ceremony to honor Chollet-Norton and show the many lives she has touched during her tenure “On the Banks.” The meet also made the 2011 campaign the winningest in school history. When the 2011 campaign came to an end, Rutgers finished with a 20-8 overall record, eclipsing the previous record win total by three victories. The record achievements didn’t stop there, however. Two weeks later, Rutgers placed fifth at the East Atlantic Gymnastics Championships. The Scarlet Knights’ score of 193.625 and finish was the highest-ever score and the highest-ever finish since RU joined the league in 1996. The program realized its goal of representing Rutgers at the elite level as three Scarlet Knights - sophomores Danielle D’Elia and Jenna Zito and freshman Luisa Leal-Restrepo - each earned a berth in the NCAA Division I Regionals in Michigan in early April. Leal-Restrepo and Zito competed as all-arounders and D’Elia participated in the floor exercise. It marked the first time Rutgers competed in the NCAA Regionals since 2007. In a season filled with record-setting performances on an individual and team level, the Scarlet Knights enjoyed many post-meet celebrations after out-dueling their opponent time and time again. In RU’s second meet of the season in Washington, D.C. at the George Washington Invitational, Rutgers placed third out of seven teams in the event with a score of 191.725. The mark was more than four points higher than its previous competition in the George Washington Invitational, further showing signs of dramatic improvement for the program. In late January, the Scarlet Knights broke through for a quadmeet victory over North Carolina, Penn and Brown as D’Elia and Leal-Restrepo combined to win all four events. It was RU’s first victory over North

20

Carolina in more than 30 years. The performance earned D’Elia EAGL Specialist of the Week honors. Next up for RU was a highly-competitive meet against Pittsburgh and West Virginia. The Scarlet Knights continued their momentum with a second-place finish and a team score of 191.150. The freshmen trio of Alexis Gunzelman, Leal-Restrepo and Alyssa Straub each claimed first-place finishes on the uneven bars, the floor exercise and the vault, respectively, to lead RU to a second-place finish against Bridgeport and Brown one week later. Leal-Restrepo captured the all-around, vault, bars and floor exercise titles to guide Rutgers to a tri-meet victory over Yale and Ithaca two days later. Another road meet brought another victory as RU posted its highest score since 2004 with a 193.525 to topple Cortland in the middle of February. Leal-Restrepo once again led the way with the vault, bars, floor exercise and all-around crowns en route to EAGL Rookie of the Week honors. A third-place finish in a quad meet against Maryland, Penn State and William & Mary was followed by the third-highest score (at the time) in school history in a tri-meet victory over Bridgeport and Ursinus. RU scored a 194.150 in the win. Leal-Restrepo was honored again by the league, this time earning EAGL Gymnast of the Week honors for her performance. That score lasted only a week after Rutgers out-performed its competition yet again in the recordsetting senior meet on March 5. Leal-Restrepo was awarded with yet another EAGL Rookie of the Week honor for her standout performance in the senior meet. The Scarlet Knights concluded their regular season with a secondplace finish in a tri-meet at Towson with Yale. Along with the outstanding team accomplishments came individual honors as Rutgers landed three on the All-EAGL team. Leal-Restrepo took home the biggest honor for the Scarlet Knights as the freshman was named the EAGL Rookie of the Year. She also garnered First Team All-EAGL accolades in the all-around, the floor exercise and on the vault. Leal-Restrepo was a Second Team All-EAGL pick on the bars. D’Elia was Second Team All-EAGL pick in the floor exercise and Zito was Second Team All-EAGL selection in the all-around. Gunzelman took home the EAGL Team MVP Award for Rutgers. The program’s proudest achievement came in the classroom as a school record 20 gymnasts were named to the All-EAGL Academic squad with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Scarlet Knights have led the league with the most academic honorees each of the last two seasons. With eight freshmen and sophomores playing important roles, the program has a promising future, however, the seven-member senior class and their head coach will be sorely missed. Chollet-Norton was honored by her peers as the NCAA Northeast Region Coach of the Year at the conclusion of her 25th and final season. After coaching her first season in 1987, she was elevated to full-time status in 1999 and has become the winningest coach in the program’s history with more than 250 victories. She completes her overall coaching ledger with a final record of 289-268-1. More than the wins and losses are the many lives she has touched throughout her tenure. She leaves the Rutgers gymnastics program in a much better place than when she first took it over and there are many people that owe her a great deal of gratitude for her dedication and service to the University.

LIVINGSTON RECREATION CENTER Rutgers Gymnastics entered a new home in 2001 with the completion of the training and competition areas at the Livingston Recreation Center.

The training area is set up with two uneven bars, four beams, and a full-size floor for practice. The gymnasium, which has served as a recreation facility for several years, has undergone an internal facelift to accommodate a new, 6,000 square-foot gymnastics practice facility with state-of-the-art training equipment. The Scarlet Knights have benefited from newly-designed enhancements to its facility in 2008 which provided optimal training conditions for the program. A brand new surface for the floor exercise and a newly-added in-ground tumbling pit has opened up the facility’s layout and made it more conducive for training. New bleachers were erected in the facility which presents a pleasant experience for fans on the day of a meet. The new facility allows the Scarlet Knights to train to their full potential, as well as helps attract some of the top gymnastics recruits in the country.

RICHARD L. MCCORMICK PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on the Rutgers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington. Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American public research universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning experience for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems; diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the people of New Jersey. President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate education at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expanded access to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popular First-Year Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no more than 20 students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty.

Other initiatives undertaken during Dr. McCormick’s tenure include: • The Rutgers Future Scholars Program, a pilot project to encourage minority and low-income teenagers from the university’s host cities to pursue higher education by offering mentorship and college preparation support, and the promise of free tuition to those admitted to Rutgers.

• Establishment of the first-ever universitywide alumni body, the Rutgers University Alumni Association.

• Rutgers Against Hunger, an initiative that combines volunteerism, research, education, and donations to address food security in the state of New Jersey.

• Transformation of the Livingston Campus in Piscataway into the model of what the university will become in the 21st century, with an emphasis on professional, executive, and continuing education; state-of-the-art residential and dining facilities; and integration with the Rutgers Ecological Preserve.

• Rutgers-Camden’s first-ever doctoral-level academic program, a Ph.D. in childhood studies – the first in the nation in this emerging discipline. • Establishment of the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers-Newark’s first new school in more than three decades.

Born in 1947, President McCormick earned a B.A. in American studies from Amherst College in 1969 and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1976. He is married to Joan Barry McCormick, RU ’88. Dr. McCormick has three children, Betsy, Michael, and Katie.

TIM PERNETTI DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former student-athlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on February 26, 2009. He oversees 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the university’s peer institutions. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a master’s degree in communication in 1995. Pernetti’s influence on Rutgers Athletics has been immediate – from the key coaching hires of Mike Rice (men’s basketball), Dan Donigan (men’s soccer) and Brian Brecht (men’s lacrosse) – to securing the first two naming rights partnerships in Rutgers Athletics history. Under his leadership, Rutgers inked a 10-year naming rights deal with High Point Solutions to acquire the naming rights for Rutgers Stadium, along with a 10-year contract with Audi for the Audi Rutgers Club at High Point Solutions Stadium. Both deals have netted the Department of Athletics nearly one million dollars in new revenue to the annual budget.

In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media partnership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and under-served sports is evidenced by the network’s unprecedented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College Sports, and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches during game action. Prior to joining CBS College Sports Network, Pernetti served eight years at ABC-TV and ABC Sports most recently as Director of Programming, where he was integral in acquiring, managing and developing several ABC Sports properties including college football, the Bowl Championship Series, and college basketball. For five years, Pernetti handled relationships and negotiated television rights with all of the major collegiate conferences. As a student at Rutgers, Pernetti was a four-year letterwinner at tight end on the Rutgers football squad. He was also the color commentator for Rutgers Football on the Rutgers Football Radio Network and announced weekly NFL games nationally on Sports USA Radio. A resident of Oakland, N.J., Pernetti is married to the former Danielle Bahto. His wife also graduated from Rutgers and was a letterwinner on the women’s lacrosse team. Danielle and Tim are the proud parents of their three children – Max, Conor and Natalie.

During his introductory press conference, Pernetti spoke about his vision to build a broadband network to deliver hundreds of live events. That promise has blossomed into KnightVision, powered by ScarletKnights.com, as KnightVision has streamed hundreds of live events per year, including unprecedented live game coverage for many of the Scarlet Knights Olympic Sports. Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all screens for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previously CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multi-media leader in college sports programming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008. Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creating multi-platform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigated through a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways to serve college sports fans. Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours of event programming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further, he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relationship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference.

A BRIEF HISTORY Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 27 degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and six schools offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and New Brunswick. Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 as Queen’s College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass Residential College, part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in 1918, and the School of Education (now Graduate School of Education) in 1924. In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University, a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number of schools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women when the New Jersey College for Women was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University College, an evening division, was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under the GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designated Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey. A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. An ambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a coeducational residential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the Graduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged. In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’ strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 62 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 230 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sciences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve life both in New Jersey and around the world. A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions and strengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences. With 27 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduated more than 12,000 students last year, and has more than 390,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jersey counties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century. Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university’s goals for the future include the continued provision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society.

GYMNASTICS SCORING GUIDE In collegiate team competition, six gymnasts perform in each of four events (vault, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and floor exercise). The five best individual scores per event comprise the cumulative team total. Collegiate competition requires at least two judges to evaluate the score of an athlete’s performance. The scores are averaged to arrive at a final mark. A perfect team score is 200, with top collegiate scores ranging between 190.00 and 197.00. Optional routines, choreographed by the gymnast to express herself through the skills she may perform best, are based on a score of 9.6 with an additional four-tenths (.4) for completing more difficult skills and/or combinations. Judges use the following categories to evaluate optional routines: Value parts (difficulty).......................3.00 Special Requirements......................1.20 Bonus Parts..........................................0.50 Composition..........................................0.60 Execution................................................4.70-5.20 Total..........................................................10.00 Vault The vaulting event requires speed, quickness and explosive power. Vaults are divided into four categories: handsprings, forward saltos, backward saltos and vaults from a roundoff. Each of these vaults is assigned a vault of up to 10.0. Deductions are taken from the starting value of the vault. Basis for deductions stems from technical errors in the areas of preflight (approach to the horse), repulsion (the rise of the horse), and the afterflight (distance and height from the horse). In 2001, the rules were modified so that each gymnast would be permitted to perform one vault for scoring purposes. This is a change from previous seasons, where gymnastics could perform two of the same or two different vaults, and were awarded the higher of the two scores. Due to safety concerns, in 2003 the design of the vault horse was been changed. It now has a larger top, allowing thegymnast more room to place her hands on the horse. It is referred to as the “tongue”, since that is what the new shape resembles. Uneven Bars A complete routine on the uneven bars comprises some 10 to 15 moves, consisting mainly of swinging and suspension skills utilizing both bars with many regrasps. A change of direction is required in the routine, while pauses for concentration, extra swings and uncharacteristic elements are to be avoided. The gymnast must change bars at least two times, and must have at least two

flight elements. As mentioned above under scoring, bonus parts worth up to 0.40 can be awarded for completing difficult skills. On this event, some of the bonus moves include somersaulting release moves, difficult pirouette work, and somersaulting mounts. Balance Beam The routine must be composed of elements from the following groups: tumbling with and without flight; strength; and dance (i.e. turns, leaps, and body waves). Special requirements on the balance beam are a tumbling series, a leap or a large jump, a full turn and a series of skills combining dance and acrobatics. The routine must last between 1:10 and 1:30. Performing on the beam requires precise movement and intense concentration, as each ‘wobble’ results in a deduction. Elements performed on the beam that receive bonus points are somersaulting mounts, double-back dismounts, double turns, one-arm handstands, and jumps showing maximum flexibility. Floor Exercise Floor exercise is a combination of dance, tumbling and acrobatics performed to music. Creative and dynamic changes in rhythm and energy levels help to create an exciting routine where composition plays an important role. The exercise must last between 1:10 and 1:30. A routine consists of three tumbling “passes” and the gymnast must balance the difficulty of both her tumbling skills and dance skills and should finish the routine as strongly as it was started. Bonus points are awarded on this event for more than two twists in the same somersault, a double-back preceded by a front or backsomersault, a triple turn, and certain unique dance elements. Specific deductions are taken for stepping off the mat and for being out of sync with the music.
