COACHING STAFF
LOUIS LEVINE HEAD COACH
Louis Levine, who has 11 years of coaching experience, enters his second season as the head coach of the Rutgers University gymnastics program after serving three seasons as an assistant coach on the Scarlet Knights’ staff. In his first season as head coach, Levine led the squad to a 13-11 record. The team had its best performance of the season at the EAGL Championships, notching a score of 193.850. Under Levine, Alexis Gunzelman qualified for NCAA Regionals. She also earned a First Team All-EAGL All-Around spot and a fifth-place finish at the EAGL Championships, the highest placing ever by a Scarlet Knight at that event. With his guidance, Danielle D’Elia, Gunzelman and Jenna Zito picked up Second Team All-EAGL Floor honors, Gunzelman earned Second Team Bars and Alyssa Straub was recognized with Second Team All-Around accolades. Academically, he helped 11 gymnasts earn Scholastic All-America awards from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). In his three seasons on the Rutgers staff, the Scarlet Knights achieved great success. The 2011 squad established a schoolrecord for victories in a season with a 19-8 overall mark and enjoyed its then-highest-ever finish and score (fifth and 193.625) in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships. Three gymnasts –D’Elia, Zito and freshman Luisa Leal – earned a berth in the NCAA Regionals, marking the program’s first representation in the regionals since 2007. Levine helped coach three gymnasts to All-EAGL honors, including Leal who was named the EAGL Rookie of the Year in her first season “On the Banks.” As a team, the Scarlet Knights improved their regional qualifying score by nearly three full points from the prior season to a mark of 193.265. RU posted the third-highest score in school history (194.35) and broke the school’s vault record (48.825) during the season. Levine helped recruit and worked with eight combined freshmen and sophomores who were major contributors in the lineup this past season. A native of Maplewood, N.J., Levine returned to his home state after three years as the Director of the International Gymnastics Camp in Stroudsburg, Pa., from 2005-08. He also coached at Surgent’s Elite School of Gymnastics in Roselle Park, N.J., from 2008-09. Levine spent time with the USA Gymnastics team in Daegu, South Korea where he was an assistant coach for the World University Games. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, where he served three seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2002-04. Levine oversaw all aspects of Michigan’s recruiting operations and helped organize the program’s operating budget. During his time at Michigan, he served on the planning committee for the program’s freshman

student-athlete orientation program, helping mentor newcomers. While a member of the Wolverines’ staff, he coached 2003 NCAA Vault Champion Andrew DiGiore. He has coached several Junior National Team and Senior National Team members and a Junior National Champion in the All-Around. Levine competed on the vault during his time at Michigan where he helped guide the Wolverines to a pair of Big Ten titles in 1999 and 2000 and the 1999 NCAA Championship. He was a twotime recipient of the Coaches Appreciation Award. Levine received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 2002 and Master’s from the American InterContinental University Business School in 2006. KERA BOLEN Assistant Coach
Umme Salim-Beasley enters her second season as an assistant coach.
Kera Bolen enters her second season an assistant coach.
“Umme’s tireless work ethic and gymnastics knowledge has been a great asset in the gym and on the recruiting front,” said head coach Louis Levine. “Her vast experience as a coach and gymnast enable her to step into any situation and thrive.”
“Kera has really helped our beam squad raise its level of consistency and performance,” said head coach Louis Levine. “She oversees a large portion of our in-gym conditioning and works together with Umme to create our powerful and energetic floor choreography.”
Salim-Beasley brings impressive credentials to Rutgers, having competed collegiately at West Virginia, an East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) member, from 1995 to 1998. A native of Pasadena, Md., she was a two-time national qualifier at Hill’s Gymnastic Training Center in Gaithersburg, Md. before earning a full scholarship to West Virginia University.
Bolen was a standout gymnast at the collegiate level. She comes to New Brunswick after spending the last two years as a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, Oregon State. A four-year letterwinner for the Beavers, she started as a walk-on, earning a scholarship by the end of her freshman year to eventually being named a captain as a junior.
Making an impact right away, Salim-Beasley was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year as a freshman and earned spots on the All-EAGL First Team in all-around, bars and beam her sophomore and junior seasons. She finished off her career by being named the EAGL Gymnast of the Year and Most Outstanding Senior Gymnast in her final season in Morgantown in addition to winning the EAGL all-around, bar and beam titles that year. Her accomplishments also ranked her as the fifth-best gymnast in the country and as a finalist for the AAI Award in 1998.
During her two years as a volunteer assistant coach in Corvallis, Bolen assisted the team with its strength and conditioning assignments, providing assistance with coaching on all four events with an emphasis on the balance beam.
After graduating from West Virginia with a B.A. in Early Childhood Education, she went into coaching, starting as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. During her one season there, the team won the Ivy League Championships in addition to an undefeated regular season, breaking team records in every event.
A native of Lake Oswego, Ore., Bolen earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise and Sport Science, with a minor in Psychology in 2009 from OSU. She was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection and earned honors as a Scholastic All-American from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC).
Salim-Beasley returned to Morgantown as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2006-07 season. For the past three years, she coached the Severna Park High School gymnastics team to two county championships, including an undefeated regular season in her first year. Additionally, she coached two different gymnasts to all-around championships. Salim-Beasley also was a teacher at Eagle Cove School in Pasadena, Md., for four years and is working towards a M.A. in Education from West Virginia University.

2013 SEASON OUTLOOK With one successful season under his belt, head coach Louis Levine returns for his second campaign at the helm of the Rutgers gymnastics team. The Scarlet Knights return heaps of talent and experience to the 2013 squad and will look to improve on its 13-11 record from a season ago. Rutgers made many strides in 2012 and will look to continue its rise in the upcoming season. The Scarlet Knights return 10 letterwinners while also bringing in six freshmen, allowing for leadership and fresh faces to add to the pieces already in place. The team returns four seniors from a squad that progressively got better as the 2012 season went on, capping the year with its best ever score at the Eastern Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships, tallying a 193.850. Senior Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) and juniors Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) and Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) are slated to be the 2013 captains. This season’s schedule includes three teams who finished 2012 in the top 25 of the NCAA rankings including Penn State (No. 16), West Virginia (No. 21) and Denver (No. 23). The Scarlet Knights will also compete against seven teams that qualified for the 2012 NCAA Regional Championships, including Denver, Iowa, Kent State, Maryland, New Hampshire, Penn State and West Virginia. Rutgers opens the season at New Hampshire on Jan. 6 at 1 p.m. “We are excited to face some highly ranked programs this year,” said Levine. “It will be a great chance to see where we rank against some of the best teams in the country.”

All-Around The Scarlet Knights bring a wealth of talent and depth with their all-arounders this season. The group is led by Gunzelman, who was named EAGL First Team All-Around and was awarded the conference Team MVP for the second-straight year in 2012. Gunzelman participated in the NCAA Regionals last season, as well. The squad also returns Straub, who earned All-EAGL Second Team All-Around accolades a season ago. Zito was a league Second Team All-Arounder as a sophomore, and looks to make in impact again in 2013. Junior Luisa Leal (Cali, Colombia) competed in just two meets in 2012 due to injury, but garnered First Team All-Around honors in 2011as well as being named the 2011 EAGL Freshman of the Year and will look to return to form this season. Plenty of newcomers will also fight for spots to contribute, as freshmen Jenna Williams (Bordentown, N.J.) and Danielle Verdon (Freehold, N.J.) look for their chance to show off their abilities in the all-around.
Vault Rutgers is very experienced on the vault, returning seven student-athletes who saw significant time during the 2012 campaign. Leal, who was an All-EAGL Vault First Team selection in 2011, also returns from injury. In 2012, the team was led by Gunzelman, who compiled a season average of 9.708. Zito finished second with a mark of 9.661, while Straub ranked third on the squad
2013 SEASON OUTLOOK with a 9.627 average. Senior Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.), sophomore Anastasia Halbig (Schwenksville, Pa.), senior Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) and sophomore Sara Skammer (Dallas, Pa.) also return with experience. Williams and Verdon will be joined by fellow freshman Nicolette Wilson (Toms River, N.J.) and sophomore Emma Hoffman (Union, N.J.) in pushing the returners for spots in vault lineup. “This is the deepest vault group that we have had here in my five years with the team,” said Levine. “We have the ability to put up 8-10 routines with 10.0 start values. This depth will help to push us closer to perfection as a group and will enable us to be pushing to break the team vault record.”
Uneven Bars Gunzelman led the charge last season, averaging a score of 9.719 per competition and earning All-EAGL Bars Second Team honors. Leal was recognized with the same honor in 2011. Outside of Gunzelman and Leal, the squad returns five other student-athletes who competed in numerous competitions on the bars in 2012. D’Elia finished second on the team with an average of 9.572 last season. Hoffman, Williams and Verdon, along with freshman classmate Aziza Day (Snellville, Ga.), look to bring their uneven bar prowess along to help solidify the event for the Scarlet Knights. “Bars has been a point of emphasis for this team from the first day we stepped on campus this fall,” said Levine. “We have added to our depth which will create a level of internal competition that will help raise the level of execution and consistency of our lineup.”
Balance Beam The beam lineup returns five of six competitors from a year ago. Halbig looks to lead Rutgers on the beam this season, after totaling a team-best average of 9.684 in the event in eight meets last season. Gunzelman was also promising on the beam with a mark of 9.608. Straub, Zito and senior Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) will also look to continue to excite the crowd with their abilities on this event in 2013. Freshman Claudia Salinas (Allendale, N.J.) looks to step into a spot
opened up by graduation. Day, Williams and Verdon look to find their way into the lineup, adding to a deep and talented group. “With a large group of returns being pushed by the freshman, the whole beam team has raised the level of artistry and difficulty,” said Levine. “This should allow us to compete with more confidence and precision that will hopefully result in higher scores.”
Floor Exercise The floor exercise proved to be the best event for the Scarlet Knights last season and should continue to be a strong point for the squad in 2013. On the floor, Rutgers compiled an average score of 48.485 per meet, its best average of any event. The Scarlet Knights returns all six gymnasts from their 2012 EAGL Championship lineup. D’Elia, Gunzelman and Zito are expected to lead the way, each bringing home All-EAGL Second Team Floor Exercise recognition last season. The addition of Leal, who was ranked in the top 10 in the country on this event for parts of the 2011 season, will help to strengthen the team’s best event. The addition of Day, Williams and Verdon along with fellow freshman Katie Stebick (Waterford, Pa.) gives the team added depth with a goal of reaching new heights during the 2013 season. “Floor exercise is the event where the team really gets to show off their personality,” said Levine. “This team should continue in the tradition set by teams of the past and continue to excel on this event.”
Outlook With a wealth of experience and talented newcomers, the squad is primed for a breakout season in 2013. The team returns numerous gymnasts who saw a lot of time in 2012 who are ready to reach the NCAA Regionals. The squad looks to improve in every event. 2012 SEASON REVIEW Rutgers University gymnastics entered a new era in 2012 with the elevation of Louis Levine to head coach, and the program continued to make strides with a number of impressive team and individual performances on the way to a memorable campaign. For the season, the Scarlet Knights had a regional qualifying score (RQS) of 192.715 with a season-high 193.850 at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships on March 24. Sophomore Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.), who participated all-around in every meet with a 38.955 RQS, qualified for the NCAA Regionals in Raleigh, N.C., after staking claim as the EAGL Team MVP for being the most consistent performer throughout the year. She led the team in RQS in all four events – vault (9.770), uneven bars (9.775), balance beam (9.840) and floor exercise (9.840). Gunzelman also earned First Team All-EAGL All-Around and Second Team Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise to add to her impressive resume with two years of eligibility remaining. Classmate Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) additionally had a solid season (37.560 RQS) all-around to take home Second Team All-EAGL AllAround honors. Juniors Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) (9.815 RQS) and Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) (9.825) also picked up accolades as Second Team All-Floor Exercise representatives. The team continued its excellence in the classroom, as 15 student-athletes were named to the EAGL All-Academic Team – tied for the most in the league. The highlight of the year for the Scarlet Knights (13-11) was the team performance at the EAGL Championships in Pittsburgh. RU broke the program record for its team score at the event, passing the mark of 193.625 set just one year ago. Gunzelman recorded the highest-ever all-around placing by a RU gymnast at the meet with a fifth-place finish (39.125), including a personal-best on the floor exercise (9.900). Rutgers notched its second-highest score in school history in any meet with a 49.125 on the floor exercise, the event in which the team performed strongest all year. D’Elia and Zito put up marks of 9.850 and 9.825, respectively, in the event. The squad did not have to count a fall – one of the team’s goals leading into every meet. Looking back to the beginning of the season, the Scarlet Knights opened the year at home against New Hampshire. It was the 12th-straight season the two programs met in the gym to open the campaign. The meet marked the first for Levine as head coach, as he replaced legendary mentor Chrystal Chollet-Norton after an illustrious 25-year tenure. Sophomore Luisa Leal (Cali, Columbia) led the way that afternoon in early January with a 39.000 first-place all-around score. The team then took to the road for meets at West Virginia and Pennsylvania, improving the team score but falling by the slightest of margins. Rutgers stayed optimistic heading into
a home quad meet and took first to even its record at 3-3. Gunzelman registered her career-high (at the time) in the allaround (38.925) and Zito put up a personal-best 9.850 with her floor routine. Rutgers improved its team score the following weekend at a quad meet at Pittsburgh in what was a good opportunity for the team to familiarize themselves with the equipment in the Fitzgerald Field House before heading there later on in the year for the EAGL Championships. Straub had a stellar performance with a 9.825 on the vault, while Gunzelman took first in the allaround for the second-straight week (39.075). The annual “Pink Meet” was held on February 11 at the Livingston Recreation Center. RU improved to 5-1 at home with freshmen Sara Skammer (Dallas, Pa.) and Anastasia Halbig (Schwenksville, Pa.) having solid days, providing contributions to the team in their first season with scores of 9.725 on 9.650 on the vault, respectively. Following the tri-meet victory, the Scarlet Knights hit the road once again to participate in a quad meet at Maryland, as sophomore Alexandria Ivol (Woolwich Twp., N.J.) notched a season-high 9.675 on the uneven bars. Levine believed the team left some points in the gym that night, but Rutgers regrouped to set a new season-high score on “Alumni Night,” 192.400. A standingroom-only crowd witnessed another strong RU performance on the floor exercise, in addition to a first-place 9.875 mark by Halbig on the balance beam. D’Elia notched a 9.900 on the uneven bars to lead a quad meet victory at Cornell on March 3. Halbig (9.800) won the balance beam once again, with graduate student Leigh Heinbaugh (Sicklerville, N.J.) and junior Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) finishing in a tie for second (9.775), which were also personal-best scores for the duo. Gunzelman (9.875) won the floor exercise with a career-high mark, while junior Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.), a consistent part of the rotation, placed in second (9.775). It was an emotional afternoon at the Livingston Recreation Center for “Senior Day” on March 10. The program honored its five departing gymnasts – Alexandra Belvis (Hinsdale, Ill.), Melanie Brother (Crofton, Md.), Danae Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.), Nicole Schwartz (Somerset, N.J.) and Heinbaugh – in a ceremony following another excellent showing on the floor exercise (48.000) for the home crowd. Three Scarlet Knights eclipsed 9.800 in the event as the team put up a 192.900 in the final home meet of the season. The regular season wrapped up with a tri-meet at William & Mary, the last opportunity to prepare for the EAGLs. Rutgers finished in second to lead into the team-high score in Pittsburgh the next weekend.

LIVINGSTON RECREATION CENTER Rutgers Gymnastics entered a new home in 2001 with the completion of the training and competition areas at the Livingston Recreation Center.
The training area is set up with two uneven bars, four beams, and a full-size floor for practice. The gymnasium, which has served as a recreation facility for several years, has undergone an internal facelift to accommodate a new, 6,000 square-foot gymnastics practice facility with state-of-the-art training equipment. The Scarlet Knights have benefited from newly-designed enhancements to its facility in 2008 which provided optimal training conditions for the program. A brand new surface for the floor exercise and a newly-added in-ground tumbling pit has opened up the facility’s layout and made it more conducive for training. New bleachers were erected in the facility which presents a pleasant experience for fans on the day of a meet. The new facility allows the Scarlet Knights to train to their full potential, as well as helps attract some of the top gymnastics recruits in the country.

TIM PERNETTI DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former student-athlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on February 26, 2009. He oversees 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the university’s peer institutions. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a master’s degree in communication in 1995. Pernetti’s influence on Rutgers Athletics has been immediate – from the key coaching hires of Mike Rice (men’s basketball), Dan Donigan (men’s soccer) and Brian Brecht (men’s lacrosse) – to securing the first two naming rights partnerships in Rutgers Athletics history. Under his leadership, Rutgers inked a 10-year naming rights deal with High Point Solutions to acquire the naming rights for Rutgers Stadium, along with a 10-year contract with Audi for the Audi Rutgers Club at High Point Solutions Stadium. Both deals have netted the Department of Athletics nearly one million dollars in new revenue to the annual budget. Two other key objectives on Pernetti’s watch were to secure a new food vendor for Rutgers Athletics and secure an all-sports shoe and apparel deal for the department. Pernetti led the charge to bring Sodexo to Rutgers as the exclusive concessionaire and caterer for the Athletics Department. The 10-year agreement will enhance the gameday experience, significantly increase revenues to Athletics, and fund future capital improvements at High Point Solutions Stadium and the RAC. He further directed negotiations with Nike to execute the first-ever all-sports shoe and apparel deal for all 24 sports at Rutgers. The five-year agreement worth approximately $5.2M in equipment and apparel will provide state-ofthe-art apparel for all Rutgers student-athletes. During his introductory press conference, Pernetti spoke about his vision to build a broadband network to deliver hundreds of live events. That promise has blossomed into RVision, powered by ScarletKnights.com, as RVision has streamed hundreds of live events per year, including unprecedented live game coverage for
many of the Scarlet Knights Olympic Sports. Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all distribution platforms for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previously CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multi-media leader in college sports programming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008. Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creating multi-platform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigatedthrough a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways toserve college sports fans. Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours ofevent pro
35 gramming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further, he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relationship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference. In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media partnership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and under-served sports is evidenced by the network’s unprecedented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College Sports,
and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches during game action. Prior to joining CBS College Sports Network, Pernetti served eight years at ABC-TV and ABC Sports most recently as Director of Programming, where he was integral in acquiring, managing and developing several ABC Sports properties including college football, the Bowl Championship Series, and college basketball. For five years, Pernetti handled relationships and negotiated television rights with all of the major collegiate conferences. As a student at Rutgers, Pernetti was a four-year letterwinner at tight end on the Rutgers football squad. He was also the color commentator for Rutgers Football on the Rutgers Football Radio Network and announced weekly NFL games nationally on Sports USA Radio. A resident of Oakland, N.J., Pernetti is married to the former Danielle Bahto. His wife also graduated from Rutgers and was a letterwinner on the women’s lacrosse team. Danielle and Tim are the proud parents of their three children – Max, Conor and Natalie. In his spare time Pernetti is the Commissioner of Oakland (N.J.) Recreation Youth football program, serves on the Board of Directors of the Reed Academy (a school in Oakland serving children with autistic spectrum disorder), and has been named a member of the NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee for Community Engagement.

36 A BRIEF HISTORY Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 28 degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 10 graduate schools, and eight schools offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Six are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and New Brunswick. Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 as Queen’s College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass Residential College, part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in 1918, and the School of Education (now Graduate School of Education) in 1924. In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University; a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number of schools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women when the New Jersey College for Women was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University College, an evening division, was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under the GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designated Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey. A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. An ambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a co-educational residential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the Graduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged. In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’ strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 61 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 200 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sciences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve life both in New Jersey and around the world. A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions and strengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences. With 28 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 180 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduated more than 13,000 students last year, and has more than 400,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jersey counties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century. Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university’s goals for the future include the continued provision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society.

GYMNASTICS SCORING GUIDE In collegiate team competition, six gymnasts perform in each of four events (vault, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and floor exercise). The five best individual scores per event comprise the cumulative team total. Collegiate competition requires at least two judges to evaluate the score of an athlete’s performance. The scores are averaged to arrive at a final mark. A perfect team score is 200, with top collegiate scores ranging between 190.00 and 197.00. Optional routines, choreographed by the gymnast to express herself through the skills she may perform best, are based on a score of 9.6 with an additional four-tenths (.4) for completing more difficult skills and/or combinations. Judges use the following categories to evaluate optional routines: Value parts (difficulty).......................3.00 Special Requirements......................1.20 Bonus Parts..........................................0.50 Composition..........................................0.60 Execution................................................4.70-5.20 Total..........................................................10.00
flight elements. As mentioned above under scoring, bonus parts worth up to 0.40 can be awarded for completing difficult skills. On this event, some of the bonus moves include somersaulting release moves, difficult pirouette work, and somersaulting mounts.
Balance Beam The routine must be composed of elements from the following groups: tumbling with and without flight; strength; and dance (i.e. turns, leaps, and body waves). Special requirements on the balance beam are a tumbling series, a leap or a large jump, a full turn and a series of skills combining dance and acrobatics. The routine must last between 1:10 and 1:30. Performing on the beam requires precise movement and intense concentration, as each ‘wobble’ results in a deduction. Elements performed on the beam that receive bonus points are somersaulting mounts, double-back dismounts, double turns, one-arm handstands, and jumps showing maximum flexibility.
Vault The vaulting event requires speed, quickness and explosive power. Vaults are divided into four categories: handsprings, forward saltos, backward saltos and vaults from a roundoff. Each of these vaults is assigned a vault of up to 10.0. Deductions are taken from the starting value of the vault. Basis for deductions stems from technical errors in the areas of preflight (approach to the horse), repulsion (the rise of the horse), and the afterflight (distance and height from the horse). In 2001, the rules were modified so that each gymnast would be permitted to perform one vault for scoring purposes. This is a change from previous seasons, where gymnastics could perform two of the same or two different vaults, and were awarded the higher of the two scores. Due to safety concerns, in 2003 the design of the vault horse was been changed. It now has a larger top, allowing thegymnast more room to place her hands on the horse. It is referred to as the “tongue”, since that is what the new shape resembles.
Uneven Bars A complete routine on the uneven bars comprises some 10 to 15 moves, consisting mainly of swinging and suspension skills utilizing both bars with many regrasps. A change of direction is required in the routine, while pauses for concentration, extra swings and uncharacteristic elements are to be avoided. The gymnast must change bars at least two times, and must have at least two

Floor Exercise Floor exercise is a combination of dance, tumbling and acrobatics performed to music. Creative and dynamic changes in rhythm and energy levels help to create an exciting routine where composition plays an important role. The exercise must last between 1:10 and 1:30. A routine consists of three tumbling “passes” and the gymnast must balance the difficulty of both her tumbling skills and dance skills and should finish the routine as strongly as it was started. Bonus points are awarded on this event for more than two twists in the same somersault, a double-back preceded by a front or backsomersault, a triple turn, and certain unique dance elements. Specific deductions are taken for stepping off the mat and for being out of sync with the music.
