MIKE MULQUEEN HEAD COACH • 35TH SEASON MIKE MULQUEEN, a five-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year and five-time NCAA District Coach of the Year, begins his 35th season as a member of the Rutgers track and field coaching staff, and his 31st as head coach of the men’s track & field and cross country programs. Mulqueen has achieved a number of milestones, including sending a school-record seven participants to the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championship. The Scarlet Knights enjoyed one of the most successful campaigns in program history during the 2005 season. Rutgers capped its outstanding year with victories at both the 2005 BIG EAST and IC4A Outdoor Championships. The team also won the 2005 IC4A Indoor Championships and finished second in the 2005 BIG EAST Indoor Championships. The Scarlet Knights were also represented at the 2005 NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., as Sam Segond and Marquis Allen garnered All-American status with their performances. In addition, Mulqueen and his staff earned their fourth BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors, capturing the trophy in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Mulqueen began his coaching career at St. Joseph’s High School in Metuchen, N.J., his alma mater. While at St. Joe’s, he helped coach several county championship teams, including a state championship squad. His athletes won numerous county and state championships; two went on to achieve national success and All-America accolades.
All of this success is fostered by a coaching philosophy that incorporates each and every individual on the team. Mulqueen believes in the entire team concept of track & field/cross country and he continues to develop the Rutgers program with that philosophy. An accomplished track and field athlete himself, Mulqueen is a 1976 graduate of Manhattan College, where he earned a B.A. in English. While at Manhattan, he specialized in the 400 hurdles, earning four varsity letters with the Jaspers. He was also a member of the Jaspers’ 1973 NCAA National Championship team. In high school, Mulqueen was a county and conference champion and ran on several county and state championship teams. Coach Mulqueen resides in Dunellen with his wife Tracey, and their children Danny (23), Sean (19) and Emily Anne (17).

Mulqueen continued this success at Rutgers where he started as a volunteer assistant coach, working with the men’s and women’s hurdlers. He made his way up to part-time coach and continued to assist those hurdlers. Many of them earned national recognition including Debbie Deutsch, Julie Smithers, Lorie McCauley (an American record-holder in the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.69), Boris Pendergrass and Eugene Norman. These hurdlers and hurdle relay teams were ranked nationally on several occasions. In 1982, Mulqueen was elevated to a full-time assistant position with the track and field team and assumed the cross country head coaching duties. In 1983, he took over the reins of the track and field program. Upon his hire as head coach, Mulqueen began building one of the most comprehensive and successful track and field programs in the East. Since his appointment, Mulqueen has indeed developed Rutgers into one of the strongest programs in the college ranks. Each year, the Scarlet Knights have risen to greater heights. Mulqueen had perhaps his proudest moment as a coach when former Scarlet Knight Balazs Koranyi participated in the 1996 Summer Olympics in the 800 meters, ultimately reaching the semifinals. Koranyi later reached the semifinals at the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia. During his tenure as head coach, Mulqueen’s cross country and track and field teams have placed in the top five at the BIG EAST Championship 20 times, won 19 Metropolitan Championships and placed in the top three on 45 other occasions. He has seen his teams place among the top 10 in the IC4A 17 times. Under Mulqueen’s guidance, Rutgers has had 24 All-Americans, 186 Metropolitan Champions, 45 IC4A Champions, 361 All-East selections, five Junior National Champions, 108 BIG EAST Champions and 10 national sports festival participants. His athletes have set 67 school records.

In only his first year back at his alma mater, Farrell has guided his event groups to five NCAA Regional qualifications, seven All-East honors at the IC4A Championships and six BIG EAST Athlete of the Week accolades. Under his guidance, the Scarlet Knights have set new school benchmarks in the triple jump and pole vault, as well as two new indoor facility records in long jump and pole vault.

In all, his athletes scored 56 total points at the Outdoor BIG EAST Championships with the Scarlet Knights placing third overall. Farrell returned to Rutgers from Lafayette College where he spent two years coaching the sprints, hurdles and jumps. At Lafayette, Farrell guided student-athletes to 12 Patriot League Championships, including the fastest men’s 100m and 4x100m performances in Patriot League history. Under his tutelage, the Leopards placed in the top-six individually at the Patriot League Championships 52 times. He also mentored 71 performances that ranked among Lafayette’s all-time top-10, with eight school records. In 2012, he coached the Patriot League Indoor and Outdoor Female Field Athlete of the Meet as well as the Outdoor Male Track Athlete of the Meet. Farrell joined the Lafayette program after spending a year at Central Connecticut State, where he acted as the assistant women’s track and field coach in charge of the sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws. While at Central, his student-athletes broke six individual schools records with 12 athletes qualifying for the New England Championships.
ASSISTANT COACH • 12TH SEASON

He saw his group win the outdoor 4x100 and both the indoor and outdoor 4x400 races at the BIG EAST Championships in 2005. The 4x200 relay team also set a school record at the Penn Relays. His sprint group produced 15 All-BIG EAST and 14 All-East (IC4A) performers in 2005. He has also coached 33 BIG EAST Champions during his tenure. He produced his first All-American in 2010 with Bruce Owens in the 200m. During his tenure, his group has set eight school records which still stand. Tomlinson, a class of ‘85 Rutgers graduate, had a distinguished career as a Scarlet Knight, winning a Metropolitan Championship in the 100 dash and being named to the All-East team on the 4x100 relay. He was also the recipient of the Colin McManus award, which is awarded annually to the team’s most improved athlete. Tomlinson currently resides in Willingboro, N.J.
Prior to his arrival at CCSU, Farrell worked at Wagner College as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams. While in Staten Island, N.Y., Farrell tutored the Northeast Conference Long Jump Champion, the Most Outstanding Field Performer and the Most Valuable Performer. His athletes broke 12 school records during his tenure. Before he made the jump to college, Farrell coached seven seasons at Toms River North High School. While at North, he coached 32 Ocean County Champions, 20 Shore Conference Champions, 44 State Qualifiers and five All-Americans. Twenty-eight school records were broken during Farrell’s leadership. The New Jersey native graduated from Rutgers with a BA in English. Farrell was a multiple BIG EAST Scorer, IC4A qualifier and Academic All-BIG EAST selection. He earned a Masters in Sports Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He currently holds a USATF Level II certification in Jumps and a USTFCCCA Academy Special Certification in Sprints, Hurdles and Relays. ROBERT L. BARCHI is the 20th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Since beginning his tenure on September 1, 2012, President Barchi has been overseeing preparations for integrating into Rutgers most units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, as outlined in the recently adopted New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act. He has begun work on a university strategic plan (the first in more than 15 years) and was part of a statewide coalition of university, business, and labor leaders urging voter support of a $750 million bond act for higher education construction, which was approved by a wide margin in November. President Barchi announced on November 20, 2012 that all intercollegiate athletic teams on Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus will join the Big Ten Conference at a date to be determined.

/// PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY /// DR. ROBERT L. BARCHI PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY founded the Department of Neuroscience at Penn and served as its first chair; he also served as chair of the Department of Neurology. He was named the Fairhill Professor in 2002, a position that he still holds in emeritus status.
From 2004 to 2012, Dr. Barchi served as president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, nationally regarded as a top university dedicated to health sciences education and research. Prior to Jefferson, he was provost and chief academic officer of the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution founded in 1740. There, he had responsibility for Penn’s 12 schools, all academic programs, athletics, students, and faculty. Dr. Barchi was born in Philadelphia but spent his formative years not far from Rutgers in Westfield, N.J. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Georgetown University, and Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed specialty training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and holds board certification in neurology. Throughout his career, Dr. Barchi has been active as a teacher and as an NIH-funded researcher in the fields of neuroscience and neurology, and he has published extensively in his field. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his pioneering research on the structure and function of voltage-gated ion channels in nerve and muscle, and on the role these critical molecules can play in human disease. He was also elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians and named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Neurological Association, and the American Academy of Neurology. In 1972, Dr. Barchi began his academic career as a faculty member at Penn. Within a decade, he rose to become the David Mahoney Professor of Neurological Sciences. Between 1983 and 1996, he served as director of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences—an interdisciplinary, universitywide entity that he expanded to become the focus for Penn’s growth in neuroscience, encompassing the intellectual activities of more than 120 faculty members. Dr. Barchi
The University of Pennsylvania named Dr. Barchi as its provost and chief academic officer in 1999, and he served in this capacity until 2004. As provost, Dr. Barchi had responsibility for the university’s 12 schools and their academic programs and budgets and Penn’s intercollegiate athletics program, as well as for Penn’s students and faculty. During his tenure, he worked with president Judith Rodin to reassert the primacy of the academic mission in the direction of the university. He recruited new leadership to nine of the 12 schools at Penn and established a number of universitywide interdisciplinary educational and research institutes. He also led the university through a comprehensive strategic planning process. As president of Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Barchi oversaw a period of tremendous growth. The university established three new schools—including the Jefferson School of Pharmacy, which graduated its first class in May 2012, and the Jefferson School of Population Health, the only school in the nation to offer a master’s degree in chronic care management. Overall student enrollment increased by 51 percent and annual degrees awarded rose by 54 percent. Dr. Barchi also expanded the reach of the campus, inaugurating the Partnership in Healthcare Education, an academic affiliation with the University of Delaware that offers dual-degree programs between the two institutions. Other accomplishments at Jefferson include successful implementation of an ambitious strategic plan that integrated the university’s clinical, education, and research missions; a comprehensive facilities master plan that supports those missions; and a major fundraising campaign that provides the resources necessary for success. During Dr. Barchi’s tenure, Jefferson established 22 new endowed professorships and 50 endowed scholarships, helping to ensure a healthy and diverse community of faculty and students. The university surpassed $300 million in fundraising under his leadership, twice the amount raised during the preceding eight-year period.
coupled with improved landscape design and signage, helped provide visitors and the Jefferson community a sense of place and connectedness to the compact urban campus in the heart of the city’s historic district. Dr. Barchi is married to Francis Harper Barchi, a tenure-track faculty member of the Rutgers School of Social Work. Before coming to Rutgers, she was a senior fellow in the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was engaged in education and research activities relating to international research ethics. Francis Barchi holds a Ph.D. in social welfare, a master’s in bioethics, and a master’s in nonprofit leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a bachelor’s degree from Smith College. She is the former executive vice president of the Dana Foundation in New York, a post she assumed following a 20-year span as president of her own company, which provided protocol and strategic communication services for international clients. Francis Barchi’s research focuses on the social and behavioral factors that influence women’s health in southern Africa. In 2009, she completed the first major quantitative study on women’s autonomy and gender-based violence in Botswana, and she is the principal investigator on a study in that country examining the extent to which women’s understanding of HPV and cervical cancer influences their decision-making about prevention and treatment. She is currently part of a team responsible for ethics training of health professionals in Botswana, Tanzania, and Guatemala. As an avocation, President Barchi is an expert in the history and mechanical development of clocks and watches. In addition to collecting and conserving examples of these timepieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, he designs and constructs his own precision clocks in his basement machine shop. The Barchis, who have four adult children and one young dog, spend their leisure time at their home in coastal Maine where they are avid boaters and hikers.
During his presidency, Dr. Barchi also oversaw the transformation of Jefferson’s urban environment into a vibrant university campus. A coordinated construction program,

At Louisville, Hermann served as the manager of 20 sports as the Louisville Cardinals built one of the nation’s highest performing athletic departments, including the 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball National title, two NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship games (2009 & 2013), one NCAA Men’s Soccer College Cup National Championship appearance (2010), two College World Series appearances (2007 & 2013) and two BCS bowl victories in the 2007 Orange Bowl and 2013 Sugar Bowl. The Cardinals won 64 Big East championships and titles since joining the league in 2005. While overseeing marketing, development, academics, sports performance, sports medicine, championships, student development (including the Derek Smith Leadership Academy), Hermann cultivated support for many of the state-of-theart athletics venues that allowed the Cardinals to enjoy one of the nation’s biggest and best building booms in college sports. The Cardinals built over $250 million worth of facilities on campus as part of a strategic plan that allowed them to move into the Big East Conference in 2005 and to be selected again for expansion in 2012 by the Atlantic Coast Conference. The expansion of Papa John’s Cardinal Football Stadium, the Jim Patterson Baseball Stadium, the Trager Center, the Lacrosse Stadium, the YUM!

Arena and Cardinal Park - which houses UlmerStadium (softball), Trager Stadium (field hockey) and the track and field complex - have allowed the Cardinals to lead the nation in hosting conference and NCAA championship events including six National Championships. Following a nationally competitive search, Hermann was selected from a pool of 63 candidates as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Rutgers University. She is the first woman to serve in this capacity at Rutgers and only the second woman to be an athletic director in the history of the Big Ten Conference. A former all-conference performer for the renowned Nebraska Volleyball program, Hermann is a tireless advocate for the student-athlete experience. At Louisville, she designed and created a best in class studentathlete support system called LCARE. Within her first year, Rutgers Athletics has implemented the RCARE system, dedicated to providing a comprehensive care system for all Scarlet Knights. Hermann has served on numerous community boards including the Frazier Rehab Institute, the Louisville Sports Commission, the Center for Women and Families, Women 4 Women and many NCAA and conference committees, including chairing the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee. Hermann just completed seven years of service on the board of NACWAA, serving a four-year term before being on the executive board and becoming president.

As an assistantwith USA Volleyball, Hermann supported the National Team as they prepared for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and coached a silver medal finish at the World University Games in Catania, Italy in 1997. Prior to USA Volleyball, Hermann was the headvolleyball coach at the University of Tennessee from 1991 to 1997. Under her watch the Lady Vols improved over a 150 spots in the NCAA RPI from No. 177 to No. 25, and in just her third season returned the Lady Vols to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in over a decade. After her All-Big Eight volleyball playing career at the University of Nebraska and NCAA top-five finishes, Hermann became anassistant coach at the University of Georgia and the University of Wyoming.Hermann’s skills as a coach and a recruiter lifted those programs to unprecedented national rankings and advancement in the NCAA Tournament.
