Head Coach Jay Nelson Ushering in a new era of Rutgers softball, Jay Nelson has led a successful turnaround for the Scarlet Knights in his five-year tenure. With a solid foundation built, RU is poised to make a strong run in 2011 The 2010 season saw the Scarlet Knights reach their first BIG EAST Championship since 1998. Rutgers finished its season with the most wins overall (24) and best winning percentage (.444) since 2004 (25, .462). The Scarlet Knights’ nine conference wins was the most since 2002 (9). Rutgers went toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed DePaul in the conference tournament, but was outlasted by the regular season champion Blue Demons, 3-0 In the classroom, five student-athletes were named 2010 girls got game All-America Scholar-Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), acquiring a 3.5 GPA or higher. In 2009, the Scarlet Knights matched their win total from the previous year, finishing 23-33 overall and 6-18 in conference play. Rutgers also saw its fourth-consecutive Scarlet Knight, third-straight under Nelson, earn postseason accolades as first baseman Mandy Craig was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. In his inaugural campaign, Nelson’s squad amassed a 20-34 overall record, matching the combined win totals of the previous two seasons (15 in 2006, 5 in 2005). The Scarlet Knights also picked up seven victories in conference play, marking the most BIG EAST wins since the 2004 season. Nelson also coached several Scarlet Knights to individual success. Last season, sophomore Brittney Lindley earned a spot on the NFCA All-Mideast Region Second Team after leading the Scarlet Knights with a .356 batting average and breaking the RU single-season home run record with 13 blasts in 2010.

Division I All-Star Team. In 2009, three players hit for above .300 for the second time in Nelson’s tenure – a feat that had not been accomplished since 2004 before his hire. Last season, Heller paced the squad with a .333 mark, followed by Kalka (.323) and Craig (.314). In 2007, Kalka led the team with a .359 average at the plate. Prior to taking over the Rutgers program, Nelson completed 10 seasons as the top assistant coach on the highly successful staff at Seton Hall University. While at Seton Hall, he helped guide the Pirates to BIG EAST Conference championships in 2004 and 2005, and runner-up finishes in 1999 and 2001. The Pirates advanced to the NCAA Softball Tournament three times during Nelson’s tenure. Nelson’s responsibilities at Seton Hall included serving as the team’s defensive coordinator and on-field coach. He also handled recruiting, and organizing practice sessions. Nelson was also in charge of the day-to-day and long-term management of many program-related functions, including serving as the liaison in such areas as academic support, facilities, travel, equipment, and strength and conditioning. Twice during Nelson’s tenure at Seton Hall, the Pirates’ coaching staff, under head coach Ray Vander May, was honored as the NFCA Northeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Nelson, who joined the Seton Hall program in 1996, was promoted to full-time status in 2001. Prior to his tenure at Seton Hall, Nelson served as head coach at Mountain Lakes High School for 12 seasons (1985-96), guiding the Lakers to state championships in 1988, 1991 and 1993. He was named New Jersey High School Softball Coach of the Year in 1993, and was named Morris County Area High School Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1991. Nelson was also an assistant coach with the Clifton Charmers, one of the top ASA programs in New Jersey. He guided the team to a fifth-place finish in the 1996 ASA National Tournament. Nelson, a 1974 graduate of St. Olaf College (Minn.), played competitively for the New Jersey Windmillers fast pitch team, and during that time participated in five World Tournaments and six National Championships, including a third place finish in 1996. Nelson also serves as the Vice President of BIG EAST Coaches Association and was selected to the NFCA Top 25 poll committee for the start of the 2009 season. Nelson and his wife Gayle reside in Mount Tabor, N.J. with their daughter Jessica, a graduate of UCLA. The Nelsons became grandparents for the first time in September.

In 2008, left fielder Amanda Heller earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors under Nelson’s guidance. Infielder Sarah Kalka, a First Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2007, was also named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Northeast Region Second Team and ECAC

Assistant coaches Misty Beaver fifth season

Ryan (Realmuto) McMullen first season

Misty Beaver, a former standout in the circle at Seton Hall, enters her fifth season as an assistant coach on the Rutgers softball staff. Beaver reunited with head coach Jay Nelson, who was an assistant coach at Seton Hall during her playing career.

Ryan (Realmuto) McMullen enters her first season as an assistant coach with the Rutgers softball team. McMullen arrives “On the Banks” after spending four years at Hofstra, working primarily with the Pride catchers and serving as a hitting instructor.

Working primarily with the pitchers, Beaver also coordinates with Coach Nelson to create the schedule, handle the team’s travel and assist in players’ off the field development.

McMullen, a four-time All-Big 12 catcher at Oklahoma State, was part of the staff that earned the Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year award from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) in her first two seasons with the Pride. With McMullen on staff, Hofstra captured three CAA Championship titles, including last season, and hosted the NCAA Regionals in 2007 and 2008.

Beaver earned numerous honors and set many records at Seton Hall. She was a two-time Second Team All-ECAC honoree, a three-time First Team All-Northeast Region selection, and a Second Team All-BIG EAST player from 1999-2001. During her career at Seton Hall, Beaver set a total of 13 single-season records and secured four spots on the school’s career record charts. She still holds the third (185), fourth (173), and fifth (153) spots on Seton Hall’s single-season strikeouts list and is sixth on the team’s all-time earned run average leader board (1.30). Beaver recorded 54 career victories, placing her third in Seton Hall’s win category, and made 101 pitching appearances for the Pirates while throwing 579 innings. In addition, Beaver enjoyed playing success in the amateur ranks. She was a member of the 2001 Decatur Twisters of the Amateur Softball Association. The Twisters tied for fourth place in the Women’s Majors and tied for fifth place at the Canada Cup. Following her playing career, Beaver served as the varsity softball coach for Rockford (Ill.) Christian High School from 2002-2006. A native of Machesney Park, Ill., she majored in elementary education and religious studies at Seton Hall.

McMullen played college softball at Oklahoma State University from 20002003, setting OSU career records for home runs (27), doubles (40), hits (162) and RBI (97). She was also a NFCA All-Regional selection as a junior and senior, and was twice chosen to the Big 12’s All-Academic team. She graduated in 2003 with a degree in education. McMullen played professionally with the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league from 2004-06. The field general started with the Texas Thunder and then played with the New York/New Jersey Juggernaut, who moved to Philadelphia in 2006. A two-time NPF All-Star, she led the team with 27 RBI and 10 home runs in 2005. McMullen also worked as a volunteer assistant coach with the University of Missouri during the 2003-04 seasons and coached at Gwynedd Mercy Academy in Gwynedd Valley, Pa. The former Realmuto married Corky McMullen on September 4, 2010.

Mark Lawrence fourth season

Mark Lawrence enters his fourth season as the volunteer assistant coach on the Rutgers softball staff. Lawrence works primarily with the pitching staff, but also with team defense and the mental approach to hitting. In addition to his duties at RU, Lawrence has been the head and assistant coach for the past four years with the U14 and U16 travel teams in Bridgewater, N.J. Lawrence has both coached and played at high level. He was an assistant coach on the Regina Wheat Country Merchants team that won a silver medal at the Canadian Senior “A” Men’s Championship in 2002. 2010 season review The Rutgers softball team finished its 2010 season with an overall record of 24-31, earning its best winning percentage (.444) since 2004. In his fourth season at the helm, head coach Jay Nelson led RU to a 9-12 record in BIG EAST play. The nine conference wins marked the best the program had accomplished since 2002. The team then made its first BIG EAST Championship appearance in 12 years. In addition to their work on the field, five Scarlet Knights were named 2010 girls got game All-American Scholar Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In addition to being integral members of the squad, Mickenzie Alden, Mandy Craig, Nicole Lindley, Kaci Madden and Danielle Procopio all acquired a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the 2009-10 academic year. Individually, several Scarlet Knights saw success throughout conference play both offensively and defensively. The lone senior of the team and ace pitcher, Nicole Lindley earned an earned run average of 3.21 and posted an overall record of 11-17. Teammate and fellow hurler Holly Johnson was a key contributor for the Scarlet Knights with a 3.42 ERA.

last nine contests. Freshmen Ashley Bragg and Jennifer Harabedian both had stellar rookie campaigns. The two played in all 55 games, starting at shortstop and second base respectively. Bragg contributed heavily with a batting average of .295. Harabedian used her athleticism during the season to steal seven bases and have a .256 slugging percentage.

Sophomore Brittney Lindley contributed heavily to the Scarlet Knights offense. Lindley broke the RU single-season home run record with 13 blasts in 2010, including nine in the final 24 games.

The Scarlet Knights opened up their 2010 season with two tournaments, the Arizona State Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz. and the UT Chattanooga Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. It marked the first time RU had ever commenced a season in Arizona. Although the Scarlet Knights had a rough start to their season, they were able to bounce back with a game against Austin Peay State outscoring the Governors 6-1.

Junior Mikelyn Messina played in 52 games with 48 starts as an outfielder or designated hitter. Messina ranked second on the team and sits third all-time in RU single-season history with eight home runs in 2010.

Rutgers then traveled to Tampa, Fla. for the USF Tournament, where they finished with an outstanding 4-1 record. Nicole Lindley notched her first shutout with the 7-0 revenge victory against Chattanooga.

On the defensive end, Meinheit co-lead the BIG EAST in fielding percentage with a perfect 1.000 on 41 putouts and seven assists. Meinheit was also a big factor offensively, scoring 28 runs for the 2010 season.

In BIG EAST rankings, Lindley finished fourth in slugging percentage (.691) and home runs, eighth in on-base percentage (.465) and RBI (37) and ninth in batting average (.355). The sophomore earned a spot on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Mideast Region Second Team. The Cicero N.Y. native earned a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the final two weeks of the 2010 season. Over the final two weeks of the regular season, Lindley went 13-for-22 (.591) with nine RBI, 10 runs scored and four homers. She slugged at a 1.318 mark over the

In their last tournament of the season, the Knights traveled to Stillwater, Okla. for the Oklahoma State Mizuno Classic. RU registered a 2-3 record where they faced tough competition that included then-No. 20 Oklahoma State. The Scarlet Knights were able to capture two solid wins – beating Wisconsin, 8-5, and Prairie View A&M, 12-2. The Scarlet Knights had a rocky start to conference play dropping its first four contests to Connecticut and then-No. 24 Notre Dame. RU bounced back with back-to-back wins, including a 3-1 victory over thenNo.25 Louisville. Although Rutgers was swept by DePaul, the Scarlet Knights put up two close matches, coming back from a seven-run deficit to fall 10-7 and narrowly dropping a 4-2 decision. RU then picked up a come-from-behind win over Monmouth, 5-3. The Scarlet Knights beat Providence College 2-1 in a three game series to bring their conference wins up to four. The Knights then split with Georgetown to claim their fifth conference win. As the season progressed, RU was able to pick up two wins against St. Johns and a win against out-of-conference foe Long Island. RU finished out the season picking up two conference wins against Pittsburgh, making their final conference record 9-12 and securing their bid to the BIG EAST Championship.

Olympic Sports Hall of Fame Carla Camino - Inducted 2004

Camino was the 1993 Headley-Singer Award winner as the university’s top female student-athlete, culminating a career that included three Atlantic-10 All-conference selections and a 1993 All-America selection, when she finished fourth in the nation in hitting with a .487 average and was ranked among the top ten nationally in doubles. At the conclusion of her exceptional career, Camino was first at Rutgers in career batting average, hits, singles, doubles, triples, RBI and stolen bases, as well as the single-season leader in average, hits, singles, doubles and stolen bases. Camino, who led Rutgers to four Atlantic-10 tournament appearances from 1990-1993, was also named the 1993 Northeast second team shortstop and led the team in RBI in 1992 and 1993.

R I C H A R D L . M C C O R MI C K PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on the Rutgers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington. Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American public research universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning experience for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems; diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the people of New Jersey. President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate education at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expanded access to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popular First-Year Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no more than 20 students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty. Other initiatives undertaken during Dr. McCormick’s tenure include: * The Rutgers Future Scholars Program, a pilot project to encourage minority and low-income teenagers from the university’s host cities to pursue higher education by offering mentorship and college preparation support, and the promise of free tuition to those admitted to Rutgers. * Establishment of the first-ever universitywide alumni body, the Rutgers University Alumni Association. * Rutgers Against Hunger, an initiative that combines volunteerism, research, education, and donations to address food security in the state of New Jersey. * Rutgers-Camden’s first-ever doctoral-level academic program, a Ph.D. in childhood studies – the first in the nation in this emerging discipline. * Establishment of the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers-Newark’s first new school in more than three decades. Born in 1947, President McCormick earned a B.A. in American studies from Amherst College in 1969 and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1976. He is married to Joan Barry McCormick, RU ’88. Dr. McCormick has three children, Betsy, Michael, and Katie.

TIM PE R N ETTI DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A lifetime New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former student-athlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on February 26, 2009. He oversees 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the university’s peer institutions. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a master’s degree in communication in 1995. Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all screens for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previously CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multimedia leader in college sports programming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008. Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creating multiplatform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigated through a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways to serve college sports fans. Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours of event programming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further, he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relationship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference. In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media partnership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and underserved sports is evidenced by the network’s unprecedented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including

CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College Sports, and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches during game action. Prior to joining CBS College Sports Network, Pernetti served eight years at ABCTV and ABC Sports most recently as Director of Programming, where he was integral in acquiring, managing and developing several ABC Sports properties including college football, the Bowl Championship Series, and college basketball. For five years, Pernetti handled relationships and negotiated television rights with all of the major collegiate conferences. As a student at Rutgers, Pernetti was a four-year letterwinner at tight end on the Rutgers football squad. He was also the color commentator for Rutgers Football on the Rutgers Football Radio Network and announced weekly NFL games nationally on Sports USA Radio. A resident of Oakland, N.J., Pernetti is married to the former Danielle Bahto. His wife also graduated from Rutgers and was a letterwinner on the women’s lacrosse team. Danielle and Tim are the proud parents of their three children – Max, Conor and Natalie.

34 A BRIEF HISTORY

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 27 degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and six schools offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and New Brunswick. Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 as Queen’s College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass Residential College, part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in 1918, and the School of Education (now Graduate School of Education) in 1924. In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University, a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number of schools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women when the New Jersey College for Women was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University College, an evening division, was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under the GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designated Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey. A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. An ambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a coeducational residential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the Graduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged. In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’ strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 63 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 230 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sciences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve life both in New Jersey and around the world. A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions and strengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences. With 27 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers over 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduates more than 10,000 students each year, and has more than 380,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jersey counties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century. Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university’s goals for the future include the continued provision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society.
