Head Coach Jeff “CJ” Werneke Fourth Season

Jeff “CJ” Werneke is set to begin his fourth season at the helm of the Rutgers women’s volleyball program in 2011. After an extremely successful stint at Fairfield, Werneke arrived “On the Banks” in 2008 with hopes of building a strong volleyball foundation at Rutgers. Through his first three seasons, Werneke is well on his way as his teams have seen improvement in victories every season. Last season, Werneke led the Scarlet Knights to an impressive 11-victory campaign. The 11 victories were the most for RU since the 2005 season. The team had some memorable victories, including five-set-wins against USF and Seton Hall. In 2009, Rutgers finished with a 10-19 record. RU’s 10 wins equaled the total amount of victories the squad had in the three previous seasons combined. The team also won its first tournament title since the 2004 Patriot Invitational when it won the Bucknell Invitational Title. In his first season at RU, Werneke led an extremely young Scarlet Knights squad through a demanding schedule that included 17 road games and 14 BIG EAST contests. Although the Scarlet Knights garnered only two wins on the year, the experience that the youthful squad gained could prove to be vastly important in the future. The Scarlet Knights have also excelled in the classroom under Werneke’s tutelage. The past two seasons, the Rutgers University volleyball team has been recognized for its outstanding academic achievement as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) awarded RU with an AVCA Team Academic Award for posting a combined team grade point average of above a 3.30. Prior to his first season as head coach at Rutgers, Werneke had a successful tenure at Fairfield where he left as the school’s all-time winningest coach.

In 2007, Werneke broke the 100-win plateau for his career and currently has a 134-144 overall record. He was named the 2006 and 2007 MAAC Coach of the Year, and led the Stags to four consecutive MAAC regular season titles. In 2007, Fairfield finished with a 21-13 overall record and a 17-1 mark in conference play. Werneke also coached 11 AllMAAC honorees, two MAAC Rookies of the Year, a MAAC Offensive Player of the Year and back-to back setters of the Year while with the Stags. Before heading to Fairfield, Werneke served as an assistant coach at Rutgers from 1999-01 under Anne Leonard-House. While an assistant at Rutgers, Werneke served as the recruiting coordinator, handled all scouting, game day operations and travel operations. Werneke graduated from Samford University in 1996 and has also coached at East Tennessee State University, Samford University and the University of Montevallo. Werneke married the former Jennifer Smith on January 20, 2007. The Wernekes are the proud parents of two children â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Rylie and Noah.

Assistant Coach Lindsey Lee Fourth Season

Lindsey Lee enters her fourth season on the Scarlet Knights coaching staff. Prior to taking the job as an assistant coach at Rutgers, Lee had a decorated career playing under CJ Werneke at Fairfield. “Lindsey has been a great assistant coach in her three years at Rutgers,” said head coach CJ Werneke. “I have known Lindsey since she was a junior in high school and after coaching her for four years at Fairfield, she has been great to work with as a colleague. Not only does she bring her knowledge and passion for the game to our staff, but her competiveness has been a major asset to our program.” Lee was a four-year standout at the outside hitter position for Fairfield. The Hilo, Hawaii native was the MAAC Rookie of the Year and named First Team All-Conference during her first year in 2004. During her junior campaign, Lee was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year and was once again a First Team All-Conference selection. She ended her career holding the Fairfield records in both digs (1,647) and digs per game (3.88). She was only the fifth Stag in school history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. Additionally, Lee has gained valuable coaching experience working with girls, ages 12-17, at Nike Volleyball Camps in Fairfield, Conn. She has also worked with junior players in her hometown of Hilo and has been coaching at the club level at the Atlantic Valley Volleyball Club in New Jersey the last two years. support staff

Assistant Coach Rachel Refenes First Season

Rachel Refenes enters her first season as an assistant coach, having been hired by Rutgers on March 25, 2011. “I’m thrilled to have Rachel join our staff,” said Rutgers head coach CJ Werneke. “Her years of experience, both playing and coaching, will help our program overall in taking the next step. Her passion, recruiting and knowledge of the game will meld well with our staff. I look forward to working with her and having her in our program.” “I’m very excited to be joining the Rutgers volleyball family,” Refenes said. “I want to thank Coach CJ for this opportunity and am looking forward to helping contribute to the future successes of the Rutgers volleyball program both on and off the court.” Refenes comes to RU after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Binghamton. While with the Bearcats, Refenes helped the program reach new heights as they advanced to a pair of America East tournaments and won the America East Championship in 2009, earning an NCAA Tournament bid in the process. The Menomonee Falls, Wis. native arrived at Binghamton after serving as the top assistant at Lehigh University in 2007 and 2008. Prior to her coaching the Mountain Hawks, Refenes served as the head coach of the Wisconsin Jrs-18 Blue squad based out of Kenosha, Wis. Refenes enjoyed a decorated playing career at Ole Miss and Ball State. She spent her first two years of college at Mississippi, where her sophomore and freshman year block totals still rank first and second on the program’s all-time single season list for the rally scoring era. After transferring to Ball State for her junior and senior seasons, Refenes shined, putting together two of the best seasons in Cardinals’ history. As a junior, she ranked eighth in the nation in blocks per game (1.67) and was named to the All-MAC Second Team, as well as an honorable mention on the AVCA All-Midwest team. She followed up her strong junior campaign with an even stronger senior season, as she was a First-Team All-MAC selection and was named to the AVCA All-Midwest team. Refenes was also chosen to the AVCA All-American Honorable Mention squad and picked up an honorable mention CVU.com Stellar Spikers accolade as well. Following her collegiate career, Refenes played professional volleyball for Nova KBM Branik in Maribor, Slovenia. Refenes graduated from Ball State in the spring of 2006 with a bachelors’ degree in liberal arts and has minors in history and psychology. She is the daughter of Peggy and James Refenes and one of five children. Her sister, Becca, currently plays volleyball at Cincinnati.

2011 SEASON OUTLOOK Coming off a season where Rutgers volleyball tallied the most wins since 2005, expectations are raised heading into 2011, as head coach CJ Werneke and the Scarlet Knights look to continue to build upon the foundation they have set the past few years. Entering his fourth season at the helm of the program, Werneke looks for 2011 to be the year where his team makes a jump in the BIG EAST standings and into the BIG EAST Tournament. “The goal since we have been here is to make the BIG EAST tournament somehow, someway. I don’t care where we come in one through eight – we just want to be somewhere in the top eight,” said Werneke. “That is the main goal, but there has to be steps taken to get there.” RU returns nine players from last year in addition to adding four newcomers to roster. “I am expecting a total team effort,” said Werneke. “We are not going to be a team where one person kills you. When we are successful, everybody is involved. We are not going to have one player with 30 kills – we are going to have four players with double-digit kills. When that happens, I think we are a pretty tough team to compete with.” One of the areas that Werneke pinpoints as a way to improve is to play more consistently on the road. In 2010, the Scarlet Knights went 3-7 away from the College Ave Gym, including just one BIG EAST road victory. “Every BIG EAST team that makes the BIG EAST tournament wins on the road,” said Werneke. “We have to have some significant road victories and we have to hold home court as well. We need to win more at home than

we lose. If we do those things, we are going to be in a great position to make the BIG EAST Tournament, which is our ultimate goal.”

Schedule The schedule is competitive once again with 14 BIG EAST matches in addition to a challenging nonconference portion that includes four weekend tournaments. Four teams that made the 2010 NCAA Tournament are on the slate. The highlight of the schedule is a tilt with four-time defending national champion Penn State at the Penn State Classic (Sept. 16-17). “I am very excited about this year’s schedule,” said Werneke. “We are hosting a home tournament for the second year in a row and getting four-time defending national champion Penn State is always exciting. Our team is excited about that opportunity.” Other tournaments Rutgers will travel to include the Comfort Suites Sam Houston State University Invitational (Aug. 26-27) in Huntsville, Texas and the Sacred Heart Invitational in Fairfield, Conn. (Sept. 2-3). RU will also welcome three teams to the College Ave Gym for the Rutgers Invitational (Sept. 9-10). BIG EAST play will commence with a three-straight road matches at West Virginia, Pittsburgh and USF starting on Sept. 23. The first BIG EAST home match will take place against Cincinnati on Oct. 7. The league has scheduled seven home matches and seven road matches. Other home BIG EAST opponents

include Louisville, Seton Hall, Villanova, Georgetown, Connecticut and St. John’s. Rutgers will also have to travel to Syracuse, Marquette, DePaul and Notre Dame to round out the conference slate. “The competitive level of the BIG EAST is getting better each year,” said Werneke. “I think from top to bottom it is one of the most competitive conferences in the country. You can’t take anyone lightly at home or on the road.” Cincinnati won the regular season and Louisville took home the BIG EAST Championship a year ago. “It is a challenging conference to maneuver and climb up the ladder, but when you do, you know your hard work is paying off,” he added. “It’s a great conference to compete in and a great conference to have national exposure in and it reaches from coast-to-coast as far as awareness and knowledge of the conference and the schools in our conference. I know I am excited to compete in it and the players are too.”

“The goal of bringing in these five newcomers was to add competition – to keep people on their toes every day. The goal should be to make the starting seven when it comes to announcement time. It is a good mix of versatility with players being able to play multiple positions. Until we get into camp, we really won’t know who will be playing and starting where.” Here is a look at a breakdown of each position on the floor.

Outside Hitter Outside hitter is a position deep with talent, giving the coaching staff numerous options to work with. This includes the aforementioned Cucuz. “We are going to be as deep as we’ve ever been at outside hitter, including three sophomores that come in with a year of college under their belt,” said Werneke pointing out Brittany Bozzini, Tiffany Regmund and Sheridan Taylor. “Now we are expecting them to make the next step.”

In addition, five home matches will be broadcasted via RVision this fall on ScarletKnights.com. They include the home-opener versus NJIT (Aug. 30) and matches against Lehigh (Sept. 13), Fordham (Oct. 4), Seton Hall (Oct. 14) and Senior Day versus St. John’s (Nov. 13).

Werneke also expects junior Kylie Orr, who had 94 kills in 2010, to have a breakout year. “We are able to go five to six deep at this position – giving the coaches options – and we love that.”

Newcomers The team will welcome four new players to the squad this year – Taylor Nelson, Alyssa Monka, Sofi Cucuz and Alex Nyman. All are expected to contribute to the team in their rookie seasons. “We have Sofi Cucuz, coming off a great senior year at the club level. Her team came in third nationally and she was a starting right-side. I am expecting her to challenge for time. Alyssa Monka has the ability to see court time right away as well as Alex and Taylor.” The four freshmen all had distinguished high school and club volleyball careers and should make an impact on the team immediately.

Middle Blocker The coaching staff believes that the middle blocker position is the strength of the team, returning senior Hannah Curtis and junior Alex Jones to the net. Last year, they combined to total 431 kills and 126 total blocks and are expected to carry the load up front again this season. Both, in addition to senior Kallie Pence, will serve as team captains this season. “We have three-year starter and a two-year starter here,” said Werneke in reference to Curtis and Jones. “They are going to be one of the strengths of this team. Then we are going to add Alex Nyman who will add some size at 6-2. Having three forces like that in the middle is only going to make us better.”

Setter Junior Stephanie Zielinski has been the starting setter the past two years, totaling a team-leading 996 assists and 272 digs in 2010. She is expected to be challenged for time from freshman Taylor Nelson this fall. “It is great to have a junior setter with experience from a game perspective controlling the offense, running the offense and setting the tempo from a game management,” said Werneke. “We are looking for her maturity to take over this year. Then you add Taylor as well and she is only going to make Stephanie better. Stephanie is going to know that someone is there and Taylor is more than capable of setting a collegiate offense. Having two true setters in the program is going to be great.”

Defensive Specialist The Scarlet Knights have options at defensive specialist as well with four players competing for two spots on the floor, namely Bush, Pence, Monka and junior Kelsey Ross.

at a higher percentage and playing more consistently overall are what the team aims to do this fall. “Our staff’s philosophy is winning serving, passing and defense,” said Werneke. “You have to win two of those three against your opponents and if you do that, you are going to be in the match. And if you win all three, you win the match. “We also have to hit better than we hit last year. We need to hit about .200 this year. Those are the immediate things, but we need to find ways to score. The philosophy is to win the serving battle, pass at a higher level than your opponent and out-dig them. If you do all three of those things, you are in good shape.” Rutgers volleyball hopes that will be the case many times this year. “We’ve been fortunate to take steps in the right direction the last three years and we look forward to continuing to take those steps and progress with the ultimate goal of making the BIG EAST tournament.”

Bush brings impressive credentials as previously noted and could spend some time on defense. Pence spent last year splitting time between libero and setter, but will devote all of her time to defense in 2011. She recorded 213 digs a year ago. Werneke also expects contributions from Ross and Monka, making this another very competitive position.

Outlook After improving the win total in each of his three years as head coach, Werneke expects 2011 to be a breakout season for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers recorded more kills than its opponents in 2010, but committed 201 more errors leading to the 11-17 record. Hitting

2010 SEASON REVIEW The 2010 Rutgers women’s volleyball team finished its season with an overall record of 11-17. The 11 wins were the most for the program since the 2005 season. “Overall, it was a good year and we took a step forward,” said head coach CJ Werneke. “I feel like we were better at the end of the season then we were in the beginning of the year and we’ll continue to work and make progress. When you’re building a program, it’s the baby steps. You need to take steps to build a solid foundation, rather than just going for quick fixes and I feel like we took a few of those steps this year.” RU started the season with a pair of losses at the Long Beach State Baden Classic. Against Long Beach State, Stephanie Zielinski paced the Scarlet Knights with 13 assists and nine digs. She also had a stellar performance against UNLV notching a double-double with 47 assists and 16 digs. Next, Rutgers went on a three-game winning streak against Sacred Heart, East Carolina, and Sam Houston State. To close the Long Beach State Baden Classic, RU defeated Sacred Heart in a come-from-behind victory. At the Delaware Invitational, the Scarlet Knights were led by a balanced attack which featured key contributions from Hannah Curtis, Alex Jones and Emma Chrystal to drop ECU. In their second matchup of the Delaware Invitational, Rutgers defeated Sam Houston State, led by Caitlin Saxton with her 15th career double-double (15 kills, 16 digs) and Alex Jones who notched a career-high 17 kills. To close the invitational, RU fell to tournament host Delaware in a hard-fought contest. Following the loss to Delaware, the Scarlet Knights went on another three-game winning streak, defeating NJIT, George Mason and Princeton. In their final match-up before the Rutgers Invitational, RU blanked in-state opponent NJIT. RU then finished second at its own Rutgers Invitational, dropping George Mason and Princeton before ultimately falling to tournament champion TCU. For her efforts, Saxton was named to the BIG EAST honor roll and Rutgers Invitational All-Tournament team after tallying four double-doubles and swatting 66 kills. In their next two games, RU could not seem to pull together a victory and dropped matches against Sacred Heart and Dartmouth at the Holly Young Invitational. The Scarlet Knights finished the tournament strong by picking up a win over host New Hampshire in their final match. Curtis took home all-tournament honors for her strong play. “We started out strong in the pre-BIG EAST season and saw some really good things,” Werneke said. “Unfortunately, the team had some injuries to deal with in the beginning of the conference season.”

RU faced a gauntlet in the start BIG EAST play going up against and falling to four of the eight teams that advanced to the BIG EAST Championships in Louisville, No. 25 Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Villanova. RU used a break in BIG EAST play to regain momentum, as they faced in-state opponent Rider. The Scarlet Knights rebounded strong from the string of BIG EAST losses and used a season-high 11 aces recorded by seven different players to blank the Broncs. The Scarlet Knights carried the momentum from the Rider win into a matchup with another in-state rival, Seton Hall. After falling behind 2-0, Rutgers rallied to win the next three sets for their first BIG EAST win and first victory over the Pirates since 2004. “The Seton Hall win was big for us because you always want to beat an in-state rival and our four seniors had never won against them,” Werneke said. “One of our goals this year was to beat Seton Hall at home and we were able to dig deep and get it done.” Zielinski was chosen to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her outstanding performances in the pair of in-state victories. Against Rider, Zielinski recorded her first double-double with 23 assists and 11 digs. Following that performance, she had an even better showing against Seton Hall as she notched 46 assists and a career-high 21 digs. The Scarlet Knights dropped three in a row on the road to BIG EAST opponents St. John’s, Connecticut, and Georgetown before picking up a victory on the road against South Florida. RU used a career day from freshman Brittany Bozzini and 62 assists from Zielinski to pick up the BIG EAST road win. Zielinski was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the second time for her efforts against the Bulls as she recorded a seasonhigh 62 assists and 17 digs. “South Florida was another really good win for us,” Werneke said. “In order to achieve your goals as a program you have to win some road matches in the BIG EAST and we took a step forward in beating a BIG EAST qualifying tournament team in South Florida on the road.” Rutgers closed out its season in November with four home matches. RU fell to Marquette, Syracuse, and Notre Dame before finishing their season strong with a 3-1 victory over DePaul on senior day. “All four seniors will be missed,” Werneke said. “It’s one of those bittersweet things. You’re sad to see them leave, but you’re excited for their futures and then you’re excited for your program to see who is going to develop and step in to take on

an additional role.”

RICHARD L. MCCORMICK PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on the Rutgers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington. Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American public research universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning experience for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems; diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the people of New Jersey. President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate education at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expanded access to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popular First-Year Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no more than 20 students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty.

Other initiatives undertaken during Dr. McCormick’s tenure include: • The Rutgers Future Scholars Program, a pilot project to encourage minority and low-income teenagers from the university’s host cities to pursue higher education by offering mentorship and college preparation support, and the promise of free tuition to those admitted to Rutgers.

• Establishment of the first-ever universitywide alumni body, the Rutgers University Alumni Association.

• Rutgers Against Hunger, an initiative that combines volunteerism, research, education, and donations to address food security in the state of New Jersey.

• Transformation of the Livingston Campus in Piscataway into the model of what the university will become in the 21st century, with an emphasis on professional, executive, and continuing education; state-of-the-art residential and dining facilities; and integration with the Rutgers Ecological Preserve.

• Rutgers-Camden’s first-ever doctoral-level academic program, a Ph.D. in childhood studies – the first in the nation in this emerging discipline. • Establishment of the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers-Newark’s first new school in more than three decades.

Born in 1947, President McCormick earned a B.A. in American studies from Amherst College in 1969 and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1976. He is married to Joan Barry McCormick, RU ’88. Dr. McCormick has three children, Betsy, Michael, and Katie.

TIM PERNETTI DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former student-athlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on February 26, 2009. He oversees 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the university’s peer institutions. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a master’s degree in communication in 1995. Pernetti’s influence on Rutgers Athletics has been immediate – from the key coaching hires of Mike Rice (men’s basketball), Dan Donigan (men’s soccer) and Brett Brecht (men’s lacrosse) – to securing the first two naming rights partnerships in Rutgers Athletics history. Under his leadership, Rutgers inked a 10-year naming rights deal with High Point Solutions to acquire the naming rights for Rutgers Stadium, along with a 10-year contract with Audi for the Audi Rutgers Club at High Point Solutions Stadium. Both deals have netted the Department of Athletics nearly one million dollars in new revenue to the annual budget. During his introductory press conference, Pernetti spoke about his vision to build a broadband network to deliver hundreds of live events. That promise has blossomed into KnightVision, powered by ScarletKnights.com, as KnightVision has streamed hundreds of live events per year, including unprecedented live game coverage for many of the Scarlet Knights Olympic Sports. Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all screens for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previously CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multi-media leader in college sports programming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008. Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creating multi-platform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigated through a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways to serve college sports fans. Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours of event programming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further, he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relationship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference.

In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media partnership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and under-served sports is evidenced by the network’s unprecedented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College Sports, and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches during game action. Prior to joining CBS College Sports Network, Pernetti served eight years at ABC-TV and ABC Sports most recently as Director of Programming, where he was integral in acquiring, managing and developing several ABC Sports properties including college football, the Bowl Championship Series, and college basketball. For five years, Pernetti handled relationships and negotiated television rights with all of the major collegiate conferences. As a student at Rutgers, Pernetti was a four-year letterwinner at tight end on the Rutgers football squad. He was also the color commentator for Rutgers Football on the Rutgers Football Radio Network and announced weekly NFL games nationally on Sports USA Radio. A resident of Oakland, N.J., Pernetti is married to the former Danielle Bahto. His wife also graduated from Rutgers and was a letterwinner on the women’s lacrosse team. Danielle and Tim are the proud parents of their three children – Max, Conor and Natalie.

A BRIEF HISTORY Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 27 degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and six schools offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and New Brunswick. Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 as Queen’s College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass Residential College, part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in 1918, and the School of Education (now Graduate School of Education) in 1924. In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University, a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number of schools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women when the New Jersey College for Women was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University College, an evening division, was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under the GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designated Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey. A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. An ambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a coeducational residential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the Graduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged. In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’ strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 62 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 230 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sciences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve life both in New Jersey and around the world. A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions and strengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences. With 27 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduated more than 12,000 students last year, and has more than 390,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jersey counties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century. Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. RESEARCH • Streptomycin, the first effective cure for tuberculosis, and other potent antibiotics were discovered at Rutgers by Professor Selman Waksman and his students in the 1940s. Waksman received the Nobel Prize for his important contributions to medicine. • The Rutgers Stem Cell Research Center, part of the Division of Life Sciences of the School of Arts and Sciences, is located in Nelson Laboratories on the New Brunswick campus where its mission is to support research with human embryonic stem cells for Rutgers University researchers and collaborators. • The Rutgers Cell and DNA Repository is a valuable resource for researchers around the world studying the role heredity plays in such complex genetic diseases as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism, Alzheimer’s, alcoholism, diabetes, and Tourette’s syndrome. • The Protein Data Bank, based at Rutgers, is the international repository of three-dimensional protein structures. With $30 million in federal funding, the data bank provides vital information on more than 73,000 proteins and other macromolecules for scientists working to design more effective treatments for disease. • Rutgers’ Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences ranks among America’s top 15 marine research organizations based on peer competition for all federally funded oceanographic research. • The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, the only pharmacy school in New Jersey and one of the top institutions of its kind in the nation, ranks in the top 10 percent among pharmacy schools nationwide in research dollars awarded by the National Institutes of Health with $8.8 million of funding awarded to the school in 2009. • Rutgers holds more than 550 United States patents, 325 of which have been issued since 2000. SERVICE TO NEW JERSEY • Rutgers’ Center for Government Services trains New Jersey’s municipal employees to better serve their constituents and trains approximately 8,000 annually through 18 separate programs and 150 courses. • In 2005, the Division of Continuing Studies offered 3,700 course sections to more than 45,000 individuals. Courses are offered in every county in New Jersey. • The Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist at Rutgers is the state’s official weather resource. • Each year on a single Saturday in the Spring, Rutgers opens its doors to the world for “Rutgers Day.” More than 200,000 people have visited the five New Brunswick campuses during the event the last three years to celebrate the institution’s three-part mission of teaching, research and service. In what started as the New Jersey Folk Festival and Ag Field Day, evolved into “Rutgers Day” in 2009.

SERVICE TO THE NATION • Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station has offices in all 21 New Jersey counties and serves the residents of the state through research, education and service programs that run the gamut from 4-H Youth Development to family and community health. Students and researchers alike are dedicated to finding solutions to the problems that most concern our state’s residents, particularly in the areas of environmental sustainability, alternative energy, food, health and nutrition. • Such nationally respected institutes at Rutgers, including the National Transit Institute, the National Institute for Early Education Research and the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research, are helping to shape national and state policy in critical areas. • Rutgers is the nation’s primary source for anti-terror security training for public transit workers. • In April of 2009, Rutgers was selected by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to co-lead a new DHS Center of Excellence in Command, Control, and Interoperability (CCI) to conduct research into the technological issues involved with maintaining homeland security. It is one of 12 DHS Centers of Excellence in the nation. • The Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy’s National Transit Institute is one of seven academic institutions around the nation that will make up a new National Transportation Security Center of Excellence. • Most meals ready to eat (MREs) manufactured for our nation’s troops are produced using Rutgers-developed technology. • The Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center is a pioneer in developing effective methods to help autistic children.
