2010 SEASON OUTLOOK Rutgers returns three of its top five goal scorers from a year ago, including seven Scarlet Knights who scored at least 10 goals in 2009. With this mix of veteran talent and experience, RU figures to enjoy a successful season as it enters the next decade. The addition of 10 standout newcomers also helps boost the chances of a stellar 2010 campaign. Seniors Brooke Cantwell and Meghan Flanagan will lead the Scarlet Knights attack along with a number of seasoned veterans. Cantwell, a second team All-BIG EAST and first team IWLCA All-Region selection, led Rutgers with 32 goal (six assists), while Flanagan paced the squad with 15 assists. Also factoring in the attack will be junior Kristen Anderson and sophomore Annie McGinley. Anderson, along with Cantwell was one of three returning players to start all 16 games and posted 13 goals and four assists in 2009. McGinley was a rising star in her rookie season, leading the team with 25 draw controls. She also finished second on the squad with 12 assists to go with her 13 goals.
CANTWELL
“We will really look for a combination of experience and athleticism this year,” said Brand-Sias. “Our offensive unit possesses some skilled and polished players as well as some physical and athletic threats. Brooke Cantwell and Meghan Flanagan are ready to lead as seniors and we have underclassmen that are ready to step up as well. Our intention is to play off all of these strengths. With the leadership from our veteran core of attackers we expect a lot of output from this group.”

In the midfield, the coaching staff will look to rely on senior Mary Cryan and a pair of juniors in Jennifer Schmitt and Marlena Welsh. Schmitt was second on the team with 19 goals and chipped in seven assists, while Welsh tallied 12 goals and one assist. Sophomore Ali Steinberg also enjoyed a solid rookie season, playing in all 16
CRYAN games, registering seven goals, one assist, 13 ground balls and winning 17 draw controls. “Our midfield is very deep,” said Brand-Sias. “We have players that gained valuable experience last season as well as some new threats. Mary Cryan is the lone senior in this group and she is prepared to step up and take the lead with some of our younger players. Our intent is to play a lot of people in order to maximize our fitness and I anticipate us being able to do that successfully.” A trio of seniors, Emily Penn, Karie McGuire and Faith Richards, will look to solidify the Rutgers defense in 2010. Penn started 15 of 16 games and finished tied for the team lead with 33 grounds balls. She was also second with 17 caused turnovers. McGuire, one of three returnees to start all 16 games, led the Scarlet Knights with 19 caused turnovers to go along with PENN 20 ground balls. Richards made 15 starts in 16 contests, tallying 24 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. “We have exceptional leadership in our defensive end,” said Brand-Sias. “Three seniors, Emily Penn, Karie McGuire and Faith Richards have all logged significant and successful minutes over the past two seasons so they will step up and lead the charge. Our Fall season showed that our goalkeepers are ready to compete and with the amount of leadership in front of them, I anticipate a smooth transition.” Rutgers will search through three newcomers to find its next starter at goalie after losing four-year starter Sandra Abel to graduation. Abel started all 33 games over the past two seasons for the Scarlet Knights. High school All-American Lily Kalata joins fellow freshman Aimee Chotikul and sophomore transfer Michelle
Zaffuto as possible replacements at the goalkeeper position. “All three goalies showed us different strengths this past Fall, so preseason will be their opportunity to show us what they have,” said Brand-Sias. “We have a great group of leaders in front of them, so they will be afforded the opportunity to focus on their position and what they need to do. This Fall showed us that they are all ready to compete and I am confident they will hit the ground running and make the transition quickly.” Rutgers welcomes 10 newcomers (eight freshmen, two transfers) for the 2010 season. Highlighting the group is sophomore Brittany Davis who played two seasons at Delaware where she tallied eight goals and an assist in 18 games. Other players who have the potential to become immediate factors in the lineup are All-Americans Stephanie Anderson and Amanda Trendell. “We have a great group of newcomers,” said Brand-Sias. “They are competitive and intense and they want to contribute fast. You never know who will step up in the Spring. Once they get the Fall under their belt they feel much more comfortable so the sky’s the limit as far as I can tell. My immediate read is that freshman midfielder Stephanie Anderson will contribute and we will certainly see a lot from our goalies, Lily Kalata and Aimee Chotikul. All of the freshmen showed us things in the fall so I am excited to see how they handle preseason. The one player that I expect to contribute is Brittany Davis who recently transferred to Rutgers. She didn’t practice this Fall, but I recruited her heavily out of high school so I know what she is capable of.”
Q&A WITH HEAD COACH LAURA BRAND-SIAS Q: You lost just three starters and return a fairly experienced team, how does that help as you begin the season? A: We made huge strides this fall as a team and we saw significant growth from a lot of our veteran players. This funneled down into the underclassmen and I feel good about the base we have created heading into the [2010 season]. Q: Talk about the overall mix of talent and chemistry on the team. A: This is a great group. They work hard and they are a family on and off the field. We have a great mix of talent, drive, and competitive attitude. Our job as a staff is to keep them on track and supply them with the tools to excel. That coupled with the team dynamic should produce success. Q: How important is it to have quality veteran leadership with the addition of eight freshmen? A: It is vitally important and I think we have great leaders. Our entire senior class offers critical leadership values and they have stepped up already. I also know I can count on underclassmen to step up and they have. Q: What are the team’s expectations and goals for the season? A: We are hosting the BIG EAST Tournament here at Rutgers so our immediate goal is securing one of the four spots and winning a championship on our home field. Outside of that, we want to excel beyond the BIG EAST and set ourselves up for an NCAA berth. Essentially we need to reach our maximum potential. Q: How excited are you and what are the advantages of hosting the BIG EAST tournament? A: Well my most immediate response is that it’s built in motivation. How can you not strive to reach that goal? It will be great having the opportunity to showcase our talents on our home field in front of family, friends, and our Rutgers community. Q: You’ve had one season with your current assistants, how has your staff jelled moving into the 2010 season?
The Scarlet Knights boast another highly-competitive slate in 2010, including games against three NCAA tournament quarterfinalists from a year ago in Princeton, Syracuse and Notre Dame. Rutgers’ 16-game regular season features an even split of eight home and away games. Six of those games will be against teams that finished their 2009 season in the top 20 of the Division I IWLCA rankings. “Our schedule is always challenging and this season is no different,” said Brand-Sias. “Our non-conference competition is outstanding and the BIG EAST continues to excel at the national level. We are excited for the challenges that lay ahead. As always we strive to compete and win the BIG EAST Championship. This season brings new motivation with the championship taking place on our home field. We look forward to representing Rutgers and this athletic department with pride.”
A: It has been a great experience. We have worked well together and I am confident we will continue to do so. We each bring different elements to the table and we mesh well. Simply having a consistent staff pays huge dividends also. Q: Your roster features players from primarily three states, New Jersey, New York and Maryland which are lacrosse hot beds. How important is it to continue to make progress in harvesting the talent from those areas.? A: First and foremost, being the state university, our main goal is to keep the best athletes in New Jersey here so they have the opportunity to showcase their talents while representing their home state. We have done a good job with that and we are working hard to maintain that tradition. Outside of that we want the best mix of players and program members. Regardless of their hometown they need to fit into the ideals of this program and positively represent us on a daily basis.

HEAD COACH
LAURA BRAND-SIAS Entering her eighth season as head coach of the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team, Laura Brand-Sias remains committed and determined to building a program that competes among the nation’s elite. Pressing forward into a new decade, the Scarlet Knights will look to seize the BIG EAST Championship and a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2010. Brand-Sias emphasizes the importance of developing her players on the field equally as much as producing quality character away from the game. Once a star for Rutgers women’s lacrosse in her own right, and now at the helm of the program, the former Scarlet Knight has her current squad continuing to make strides. With the help of state-of-the-art facilities, and a mix of talent and team chemistry, Brand-Sias will look to blend this year’s group of experienced core veterans with several standout newcomers as Rutgers embarks on its upcoming campaign. The program saw yet another Scarlet Knight earn All-BIG EAST honors for the seventh-consecutive season under Brand-Sias as Brooke Cantwell garnered second team accolades. It was Cantwell’s second all-conference selection of her career. Cantwell was also joined Emily Penn on the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Regional teams. Cantwell was a first team honoree, while Penn was picked to the second team. Continually making academic excellence a No. 1 priority, Brand-Sias’ 2009 team was named to the IWLCA Division I All-Academic squad. She also saw two players named to the IWLCA All-Academic team, while a pair was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society. Youth was served on the 2008 Rutgers women’s lacrosse team as the squad featured only one senior. But the young team was able to reach the BIG EAST Championship for the second consecutive season before falling to then-No. 5 and eventual champion Syracuse in the first round, finishing the season 7-10. Three Scarlet Knights received postseason honors, as Cantwell was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while Mary Cryan and Jessica Davis were each named to the second team. Cantwell also earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Tournament team after recording two goals and a team-high three draw controls against the Orange. The IWLCA also recognized three Scarlet Knights, as Cantwell was named to the First Team All-Regional squad while goalkeeper Sandra

Abel and Davis were each named to the second team. It marked the first time that three RU players were named to the IWLCA All-Regional teams in a season since three earned the honor in 2002. Rutgers’ success on-the-field was matched with excellent academic achievement, as the team received the BIG EAST 2007-08 Team Academic Excellence Award, given to squads with the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport. Moreover, women’s lacrosse was one of 50 schools that earned IWLCA Academic Squad honors, given to teams that have a collective GPA of 3.0 or higher. RU also saw two of its student-athletes named to the IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll in Rachel Doan and Jackie Lerner. A total of 159 student-athletes were named to the honor roll. The 2007 campaign was a banner season for the Scarlet Knights. The team posted a 12-5 regular season record, achieved a national ranking and earned a trip the BIG EAST semifinals. The 12 wins included victories over No. 11 Cornell, No. 18 Connecticut, and No. 6 Notre Dame. Their four regular-season losses were at the hands of thenNo. 9 Princeton, then-No. 9 Georgetown, No. 12 Syracuse and No. 1 Northwestern. The team eventually fell to then-No. 7 Syracuse in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship. Individually, five RU players earned All-BIG EAST honors. Katie Batiuk picked up first team honors for the second consecutive year. She also received BIG EAST’s Midfielder of the Year award in 2005 and was named to the conference’s second team in 2003. Batiuk led the team in goals (42) and points (48), and shots taken (109). She was also named to the Tewaarton Trophy Watch List, an award that recognizes the top male and female varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. Nina Frankoski joined Batiuk on the BIG EAST first team, while Jamie Farewell and Anne Marchitello and Jessica Davis earned spots on the conference’s second team. Marchitello was named to the BIG EAST second team for the third-consecutive year. The team finished the season ranked No. 14, their highest ranking since a No. 11 standing during the 1999 regular season. The 12 wins tied the third-most in team history and marked the second time BrandSias led a team to 12 victories during her tenure. 2006 started slowly for the Scarlet Knights, as they lost seven of their first nine games while dealing with many injuries. After losing consecu-
tive one-goal games to Old Dominion (12-11; 3/28) and Temple (1110; 3/31) to drop to 2-6, the team won three of its next four games, including three straight. Rutgers would finish the season winning five of its last seven games to finish 7-9. In 2005, Brand-Sias saw four of her players earn BIG EAST postseason honors. Catherine Seals and Marchitello earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors while Lyndsey Feldman and Batiuk earned All-BIG EAST First Team selections. Batiuk was named the Midfielder of the Year after just her second season with the Scarlet Knights. Batiuk ended the season with 59 points on 47 goals and 12 assists. She scored at least one goal in 22-straight games, dating back to her freshman season. Marchitello earned her first career league honor. The midfielder led the BIG EAST in ground balls in both overall and league games, totaling 41 on the season overall and 19 during conference action. Her 14 caused turnovers during BIG EAST play were tops in the league. She totaled 26 caused turnovers throughout the season to tie for second in the BIG EAST overall. Rutgers began the 2004 season dropping a tight 14-13 game to the eventual national champion Northwestern Wildcats. The Scarlet Knights then went on a three-game win streak, but the toughness of their schedule caught up with them. Rutgers dropped an 8-6 heartbreaker to Cornell, 16-7 at Virginia Tech and 13-6 at No. 2 Georgetown. RU split its last eight games, with the highlight a 7-6 win over No. 6 Notre Dame. In 2003, Rutgers was among the leaders nationally in several different categories, including scoring defense (sixth), scoring margin (ninth), winning percentage (ninth) and caused turnovers (13th). Cristina Curiale and Lyndsey Feldman were also ranked among the national leaders. Feldman finished the 2003 season fourth in the NCAA in save percentage and 10th in goals-against average, while Curiale was 14th nationally in assists per game. In her inaugural season at the helm of her alma mater, Brand-Sias led a Scarlet Knight resurgence. Under her direction, RU posted a 12-4 record – its first winning season in four years. She guided a Rutgers team that was picked to finish sixth in the BIG EAST preseason poll to a fourth-place finish in the conference, winning three BIG EAST games for the first time in school history. Brand-Sias’s immediate success earned her BIG EAST Coach of the Year laurels after just one season, an acknowledgement of the impressive turnaround she orchestrated of a program that had posted just seven wins in each of the three previous seasons. In her first season, Rutgers earned several impressive victories, including an upset of No. 14 Yale. The win catapulted the Scarlet Knights to a national ranking of 20th in the Brine/IWLCA Coaches Poll, a spot RU maintained for three-consecutive weeks. Four Scarlet Knights earned BIG EAST postseason honors, including a pair of first team and second team selections. Two RU players were recognized by IWLCA/US Lacrosse on its All-Mid Atlantic Region Second Team, while another was one of just 87 student-athletes nationally to be named to the organization’s academic honor roll. Brand-Sias came to Rutgers following one season as head coach at Fairfield University (2002), where she led the Stags to a 10-7 overall record. Fairfield advanced to the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament championship match, finishing the season with a perfect 6-0 record in league play. In only one season with the Stags, Brand-Sias’s high-powered offense was ranked seventh nationally with

2009 SEASON IN REVIEW Coming off their second-straight season with post season berths, the Scarlet Knights brought back a core group of experienced upperclassmen and a highly-touted recruiting class for head coach Laura Brand-Sias and her staff. RU opened the 2009 season with a three-game road trip and was off to a solid start with a 16-9 win over Temple. The Scarlet Knights were led by junior Brooke Cantwell and freshman Annie McGinley with four goals each. Junior Meghan Flanagan tallied seven assists against the Owls, tying the RU single-game record set by Robin Cincotta in 1990. The Scarlet Knights then dropped their next two games, both in one-goal thrillers against No. 17 Cornell (8-7 4OT) and No. ABEL 6 Princeton (9-8) with a strong effort from the defensive unit and a combined 27 saves by senior goalkeeper Sandra Abel . However, RU bounced back with victories against Delaware (7-6 OT) and Saint Joseph’s (7-6). Sophomore Jennifer Schmitt led the Scarlet Knights in both games with hat tricks and the game-winner against the Blue Hens. Despite their momentum, RU went on a four-game skid falling at No. 1 and four-time defending national champion Northwestern (24-1) and No. 10 Notre Dame (18-9). The Scarlet Knights also suffered tough home losses to Denver (9-8) and Hofstra (13-7). But the squad found a spark and notched its first win of the year against a ranked opponent, defeating No. 13 Loyola 12-11. The Scarlet Knights saw goals from seven different players and were led by Cantwell (4 g 1 a) and senior Nina Frankoski (3 g). RU then took the field against their sixth ranked opponent of the season in Georgetown and dropped a hard-fought battle despite a two-goal effort from sophomore Katherine Marino.
FRANKOWSKI
The squad then embarked on a four-game road trip and closed it out by winning the final three contests. After a 10-8 loss at Louisville, the Scarlet Knights started off a season-high three-game winning streak at Cincinnati behind four goals from Cantwell and two apiece from Schmitt, Frankoski, senior Michelle Poole, and junior Mary Cryan. RU then cruised past Monmouth 11-5, receiving

hat tricks from Cantwell and sophomore Marley Welsh. Schmitt then led the Scarlet Knights, with a career-high four goals, against Connecticut 11-6 for their thirdstraight win. RU returned home to finish out the season against BIG EAST rival and No. 8 Syracuse, but lost a tough matchup to the Orange, 15-6 despite a two-goal, oneassist effort from Cantwell and 13 saves by Abel.
TORNETTA Several Scarlet Knights received individual recognition for their efforts in the 2009 season. Cantwell earned Second Team All-BIG EAST and First Team Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Regional accolades, while junior Emily Penn received the association’s second team honors. Senior Michelle Poole was selected to play in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association/Under Armour North/ South Senior All-Star game. Three players also received recognition from the conference by being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Flanagan (3/2), Abel (3/9), and Cantwell (4/13) were all named to the weekly release for their respective efforts. Cantwell finished the season with 23 draw controls, moving her up to fourth in the RU record books with 104 career draw controls. Flanagan tallied a team-high 15 assists, giving her 52 career assists, good for fourth in RU history.
POOLE
The Scarlet Knights not only performed well on the field but also saw great success in the classroom in 2009. The team was named an Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Academic Squad while Flanagan and senior Rachel Doan named to the association’s individual team. Flanagan and classmate Karie McGuire were both inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honors Society (NCAHS).
Despite missing post season play, the Scarlet Knights will return much more experience and a talented group of underclassman to ensure great success in the 2010 season.

THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE With 30 years under its belt, The BIG EAST Conference continues on a path of success in and out of the athletic arena. The goals have always been the same. The league wants and expects to compete at the highest level and does so with integrity and sportsmanship. The commendable performances of the studentathletes at BIG EAST schools are the indicators of the league’s proud tradition of success. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2009-10 academic year will mark the conference’s fifth straight with the same 16-member group, the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. In 2008-09, BIG EAST student-athletes again succeeded on the national stage. The Connecticut women’s basketball team won its sixth national championship by defeating conference foe Louisville in an all-BIG EAST NCAA title game. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team reached the NCAA championship game and the Syracuse field hockey squad advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Three BIG EAST women’s cross country teams finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships. West Virginia was fourth followed by Villanova in sixth place and Georgetown in ninth. Individually in women’s sports, Providence’s Danette Doetzel won the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Connecticut’s Maya Moore was the conference’s sixth winner of the Wade Trophy as the top player in women’s basketball. Notre Dame’s Kerri Hanks won the Hermann Trophy, the top award in women’s soccer. On the men’s side, Connecticut and Villanova advanced to the Final Four in basketball. The 2008-09 campaign was arguably the best men’s basketball season in the history of the BIG EAST with the league setting NCAA standards with three No. 1 tournament seeds, four teams in the round of the Elite Eight and five in the Sweet 16. The St. John’s men’s soccer team reached the NCAA College Cup before losing in the national semifinals. BIG EAST football has maintained its high profile and its reputation as a balanced group. Seven of the league’s eight squads were nationally ranked or received votes in the national polls in 2008. Cincinnati was the league champion. The BIG EAST, a charter member of the Bowl Championship Series, has won three of its last four BCS bowl games. West Virginia, Louisville and Connecticut also have won or shared league crowns over the past four seasons. The BIG EAST has continued to produce student-athletes who were at the forefront of athletic and academic achievement. In 2008-09, 19 BIG EAST players were chosen to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams, including eight first-team selections. Nearly 400 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 34 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one fourth of all television households in the U.S. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 26 national championships in six different sports and 126 student-athletes have won individual national titles.
28
2010 RUTGERS LACROSSE
The BIG EAST has enjoyed tremendous basketball success, especially in this decade. In 2008-09, the BIG EAST produced four of the eight Final Four teams in men’s and women’s basketball. It was only the second time in NCAA history that one conference placed that many Final Four teams in the same season. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 11 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken six of the last 10 NCAA titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. In 2009-10, the BIG EAST will add men’s lacrosse to its growing list of sports, which will increase its total to 24 sport championships. The first women’s golf championship was held in the spring of 2003. Women’s lacrosse and rowing were added in 2001. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has been fortunate to have outstanding leadership. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Dave Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. For 2009-10, the BIG EAST will undergo one significant change. Tranghese stepped down from his position on June 30, 2009. John Marinatto, who has served as senior associate commissioner, has moved into the Commissioner’s chair. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past six years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. More than 550 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals in each of the last six summer Olympiads. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 athletes.

HELPING THE COMMUNITY
The Rutgers women’s lacrosse program adopted a little sister, Genna Camiolo, through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FOJ). FOJ is a charitable organization, created to raise public awareness regarding pediatric brain tumors. The funds raised are used to improve the quality of life for children who are afflicted with a brain tumor as well as make contributions to pediatric brain research. Genna is present at many of the Scarlet Knights’ home matches – even serving as an honorary captain and taking part in the coin toss. For more information on Genna, visit www.caringbridge.org/nj/gennahenna and for more on the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, log on to www.friendsofjaclyn.org. Committed to serving the neighboring community, the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team routinely participates in a number of initiatives throughout the year. The Scarlet Knights most recently took part in the Race For Hope in Philadelphia this past November. The National Brain Tumor Society’s Race for Hope - Philadelphia is very proud to be able to celebrate its fourth year of supporting brain tumor research and patient services on November 1, 2009. The Race for Hope 5K Run/ Walk is one of Philadelphia’s most successful volunteer and community-based events. It is one of the country’s largest fundraisers for the brain tumor community.

FOJ’s STORY
FOJ’s PROGRAMS
The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is inspired by Jaclyn Murphy. In 2004, she was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor, when she was 9 years old. Jaclyn’s strength, courage, relentless spirit and joy for life are an inspiration to those who know her. When granted her “Make-A-Wish,” Jaclyn asked, “for all the children in the hospitals to be healed.”
Adopt-A-Child Program is for children with pediatric brain tumors. Any child with a brain tumor is welcome. As of December 2008, we have over 80 children adopted with over 200 sports teams anxiously waiting. We have children in 17 different types of sports all across the country.

FOJ’s MISSION Our mission is to improve the quality of life for children suffering from pediatric brain tumors. The foundation is based on love, support and friendship between the child, the team and the child’s family. We pair a child with a college or high school athletic team based on geographic proximity so the child can be involved with the team as much as possible. The child is “adopted” by the team and becomes an honorary team member. The gift is in the relationship. The child gains a new support network of loving friends and the team learns to see the world with new eyes. Everyone wins.

In 2005, the Northwestern University Women’s Lacrosse team adopted Jaclyn as an honorary team member. She inspired the Wildcats through a magical “perfect season,” which resulted in NU’s first NCAA National Championship, in any sport, in 64 years. Jaclyn created lasting friendships with the team. She and her family recognized this positively affected Jaclyn’s happiness and health. Northwestern recognized that their relationship with Jaclyn opened their eyes and hearts to a deeper appreciation for life. Jaclyn’s quality of life improved. She wanted other children with pediatric brain tumors to have similar experiences. The Murphys realized that it is ultimately the love and support of others that gives people the inspiration and courage to get through this kind of journey. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation improves the quality of life for everyone involved.

Safe on the Sidelines is an adoption program for the siblings of the afflicted child. The entire family is affected when a child is diagnosed. Many times the healthy child feels scared and alone. This program allows the siblings to have their own team and to feel special and supported. A firsthand glance: Emily beck’s mom, Carol, on Emily’s adoption by Louisville Lacrosse “Having these athletes involved in Emily’s life is great. Emily keeps talking about it. She is even trying to teach the neighbors and her brothers in how to play lacrosse, which is funny. Even our older daughter Alex, talks about the girls, and how they played with her and cared for her too, not just Emily. Jacob loves the jersey, and has worn it four times in one week. So getting involved with FOJ is a wonderful experience for all of our family members.”

In addition to this and many other community service project, the Scarlet Knights also took part in Love Day – a trash collection project designed to clean up the New Brunswick area. The team assisted with the Special Olympics, introducing lacrosse to athletes through a clinic at the Fall Festival in Lawrenceville, N.J. Rutgers held a university-wide food drive, during which women’s lacrosse adopted a family and donated food/goods during the holiday season. Annually, the Scarlet Knights run in the Big Chill a 5k race aimed at provided toys and donations to local children. During their time, several members of the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team have participated in various Toy and Blood Drives, as well as the Read Across America program.

PRESS SERVICES The Athletic Communications Office will provide NCAA box scores and scoring summaries approximately 15 minutes after the game. Up-to-date statistics as well as post-game notes will be available approximately 30 minutes after the game. All information will also be posted on the official Rutgers Athletics website, www.scarletknights.com, following the match. GAME COVERAGE Rutgers women’s lacrosse home games will take place at either the RU Turf Field or Yurcak Field, depending on weather conditions at the time of the match. We ask that you notify in advance your plan to cover a game in person. Seating within the press area (RU Turf Field) or press box (Yurcak Field) is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. Arrangements will be made for postgame filing. Photographers: Sideline photographers and media members must follow NCAA guidelines, which prohibits entry to the bench area. Parking: Parking is located adjacent to the field at both the RU Turf Field and Yurcak Field. Rutgers’ event staff will be on hand to direct all media and fans to parking. Gate Entrance: Members of the media who have notified the Office of Athletic Communications in advance can check in at the General Admission Gate. ONLY media members who have requested working space in advance will be on the appropriate gate list and guaranteed seating in the press area/press box. Post-Game Interviews: Coaches and student-athletes will be available to the media on the field after the match following a 10-minute cooling-off period. Requests for interviews should be made to a member of the Rutgers Athletic Communications staff prior to the end of the contest. Statistics: Every attempt will be made to have a final box score and other match information available to members of the media approximately five minutes after the conclusion of a match. INTERVIEW REQUESTS All coach and student-athlete interviews should be arranged through Hasim Phillips at the Office of Athletic Communications at least 24 hours in advance. Availability will vary from week to week. Please try to give as much advance notice so that a convenient time can be arranged for both the student-athlete/coach and media member. There will be no interviews on weekends except for those scheduled in advance OR immediately following a home match. TRAVEL INFORMATION Media interested in covering any Rutgers women’s lacrosse road match should contact Hasim Phillips at (732) 445-7882, or the SID at the host institution at least one day prior to the match so that appropriate credentials may be issued. Information on travel and team accommodations will be given on a match-by-match basis, and may be obtained by calling the Office of Athletic Communications at (732) 445-4200.

RICHARD L. MCCORMICK PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on the Rutgers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington. Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American public research universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning experience for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems; diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the people of New Jersey. President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate education at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan, approved in 2006, merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expanded access to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popular First-Year Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no more than 20 students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty. Other initiatives undertaken during Dr. McCormick’s tenure include: • Establishment of the first-ever universitywide alumni body, the Rutgers University Alumni Association. • The Rutgers Faculty Traveling Seminar, an annual week-long tour of New Jersey for new faculty. • The Rutgers Future Scholars Program, a pilot project to encourage minority and low-income teenagers from the university’s host cities to pursue higher education by offering mentorship and college preparation support, and the promise of free tuition to those admitted to Rutgers. • Rutgers-Camden’s first-ever doctoral-level academic program, a Ph.D. in childhood studies – the first in the nation in this emerging discipline. • Establishment of the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers-Newark’s first new school in more than three decades. Born in 1947, President McCormick earned a B.A. in American studies from Amherst College in 1969 and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1976. He is married to Joan Barry McCormick, RU ’88. She is a Vice President at the Saint Peter’s Healthcare System in New Brunswick. Dr. McCormick has two children, Betsy and Michael.

TIM PERNETTI DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A lifetime New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former student-athlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Intercollegiate of Athletics on February 26, 2009. He will oversee 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the university’s peer institutions. The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has 212 employees and an annual budget of approximately $56 million, roughly 3 percent of the university’s total $1.8 billion budget. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a master’s degree in communication in 1995. Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all screens for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previously CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multimedia leader in college sports programming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008. Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creating multiplatform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigated through a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways to serve college sports fans. Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours of event programming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relationship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference. In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media partnership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and under-served sports is evidenced by the network’s unprecedented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns
champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College Sports, and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches during game action. Prior to joining CBS College Sports Network, Pernetti served eight years at ABCTV and ABC Sports most recently as Director of Programming, where he was integral in acquiring, managing and developing several ABC Sports properties including college football, the Bowl Championship Series, and college basketball. For five years, Pernetti handled relationships and negotiated television rights with all of the major collegiate conferences. As a student at Rutgers, Pernetti was a four-year letterwinner at tight end on the Rutgers football squad. He was also the color commentator for Rutgers Football on the Rutgers Football Radio Network and announced weekly NFL games nationally on Sports USA Radio. A resident of Oakland, N.J., Pernetti is married to the former Danielle Bahto. His wife also graduated from Rutgers and was a letterwinner on the women’s lacrosse team. Danielle and Tim are the proud parents of their three children – Max, Conor and Natalie.

2010 RUTGERS LACROSSE A BRIEF HISTORY
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 27 degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and six schools offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and New Brunswick. Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 as Queen’s College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in 1918, and the School of Education in 1924. In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University, a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number of schools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women when the New Jersey College for Women (later Douglass College) was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University College was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under the GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designated Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey. A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. An ambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a coeducational residential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the Graduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged. In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’ strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 62 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 180 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sciences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve life both in New Jersey and around the world. A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions and strengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences. With 27 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers over 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduates more than 10,000 students each year, and has more than 350,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jersey counties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century. Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university’s goals for the future include the continued provision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society.
