2011 SEASON OUTLOOK Although the Rutgers women’s lacrosse lost a talented group of seniors from 2010, the team will return five of its top seven goal scorers from last season. The Scarlet Knights have an experienced and well-rounded group of upperclassmen, as well as the addition of nine talented freshmen to help bolster a team in pursuit of a successful 2011 season. The Scarlet Knights enjoyed a solid campaign in 2010, closing out the year ranked 18th in the final IWLCA Top-20 Poll. Rutgers also had a number of individual successes as senior midfielder Marlena Welsh and sophomore goalkeeper Lily Kalata were two of four Scarlet Knights to earn All-Mid Atlantic IWLCA honors. The Scarlet Knights return 17 letterwinners, including eight starters from a team that finished 11-5 overall.
Senior Kristen Anderson and junior Lindsey Watts will lead the attack along with a number of “go-to” juniors and sophomores. Anderson tallied 25 goals (12 assists) last year, while Watts added 14 goals (one assist). Junior Annie McGinley also had a solid year before injuring her knee in the 11th game. She scored 15 goals (nine assists) in the attack and will look to pick up where she left off, adding proven depth on the offensive end. The Scarlet

Knights will also look to another group of veterans to help increase the production in the attack as senior Katie Marino, junior Danielle Macsera and sophomore Amanda Trendell will be relied up to make positive contributions to the offensive unit this year. In the midfield, Rutgers returns a solid group of athletic veterans. Senior Marlena Welsh, who will lead the midfield this season, is coming off a 2010 campaign in which she received Second Team IWLCA All-Mid Atlantic Region honors. One of five players to start every game last season, she was named to the 2011 preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Welsh was the squad’s second leading scorer with 27 goals, while also adding four assists and eight caused turnovers. The midfield will also depend on junior Ali Steinberg and sophomore Stephanie Anderson. Steinberg finished last season with eight goals, four assists and led the team with an outstanding 40 draw controls, including a school-record 10
in one game against Connecticut. Anderson had a solid rookie year, chipping in 16 goals, four assists and nine caused turnovers. After graduating three notable defenders, senior Mary Moran will lead the defensive unit. She will be joined by a pair of experienced juniors in Rebecca Alley and Kaitlyn Curran. Moran started 10 out of 16 games last season finishing with 10 groundballs and six caused turnovers. Alley was third on the team with 11 caused turnovers, while picking up 16 groundballs and six draw controls. The Scarlet Knights are also expecting sophomore Rachel Welch to add into the mix of talented defenders.
Region. Kalata earned starts in every game and led the team with 35 groundballs, caused six turnovers and had 147 saves, which ranked fourth in the conference and 26th nationally. She was also second in the BIG EAST, fourth nationally with a .509 save percentage. Sophomore goalkeeper Aimee Chotikul also showed promise in 2010 as she saw action in six games, including a great performance against BIG EAST opponent Loyola. Chotikul made eight saves and caused a turnover against the Greyhounds. Rutgers welcomes nine new faces for the 2011 season. Highlighting the highly-recruited group of newcomers is a pair of defenders Claire MacDougall and Chelsea Intrabartola as well as midfielder
The Scarlet Knights will once again look for solid play from their sophomore goalkeeper Lily Kalata, who had a standout season as a rookie in 2010. A two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, Kalata was also named Second Team IWLCA Mid-Atlantic Lauren Sbrilli. Macdougall is another Moorestown product and was a member of three Moorestown championship squads. Intrabartola was a four-year varsity player and was named to the 2009 Under Armour All-American squad, while Sbrilli received honorable mention All-American honors. The Scarlet Knights prepare from another highly competitive schedule, including the top squads in the BIG EAST Conference, such as Syracuse, Georgetown, Notre Dame and Loyola. Each of these teams advanced to the NCAA tournament last season. The Scarlet Knights will also add to their schedule, the University of Pennsylvania, a team that advanced to the 2009 National Championship and made a run to the NCAA Quarter finals last season.

HEAD COACH
LAURA BRAND-SIAS Entering her ninth season as head coach of the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team, Laura Brand-Sias remains committed and determined to building a program that competes among the nation’s elite. Building upon a successful campaign in 2010, the Scarlet Knights will look to take the next step towards the BIG EAST Championship and a berth to the NCAA Tournament. Brand-Sias emphasizes the importance of developing her players on the field equally as much as producing quality character away from the game. Once a star for Rutgers women’s lacrosse in her own right, and now at the helm of the program, the former Scarlet Knight has her current squad continuing to make strides. With the help of state-of-the-art facilities, and a mix of talent and team chemistry, Brand-Sias will look to blend this year’s group of experienced core veterans with several standout newcomers as Rutgers embarks on its upcoming campaign. The Scarlet Knights enjoyed a standout season in 2010 as RU jumped out to a 5-0 start, the best opening to the year in program history. Rutgers ended the year 11-5 overall and ranked in the final regular season IWLCA Top-20 Poll. RU had a number of individual successes, including four Scarlet Knights earning selections to the IWLCA All-Mid Atlantic Region team, while Brooke Cantwell earned All-American honors from the IWLCA. The success extended to the classroom as Rutgers was named an IWLCA All-Academic Squad for the second consecutive year. In 2009, the program saw another Scarlet Knight earn All-BIG EAST honors for the seventh-consecutive season under Brand-Sias as Cantwell garnered second team accolades. It was Cantwell’s second all-conference selection of her career. Cantwell was also joined Emily Penn on the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Regional teams. Cantwell was a first team honoree, while Penn was picked to the second team. Continually making academic excellence a No. 1 priority, Brand-Sias’ 2009 team was named to the IWLCA Division I All-Academic squad. She also saw two players named to the IWLCA All-Academic team, while a pair was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society. Youth was served on the 2008 Rutgers women’s lacrosse team as the squad featured only one senior. But the young team was able to reach the BIG EAST Championship for the second consecutive season before falling to then-No. 5 and eventual champion Syracuse in the first round, finishing the season 7-10. Three Scarlet Knights received post-season honors, as
10
Cantwell was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while Mary Cryan and Jessica Davis were each named to the second team. Cantwell also earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Tournament team after recording two goals and a team-high three draw controls against the Orange. The IWLCA also recognized three Scarlet Knights, as Cantwell was named to the First Team All-Regional squad while goalkeeper Sandra Abel and Davis were each named to the second team. It marked the first time that three RU players were named to the IWLCA All-Regional teams in a season since three earned the honor in 2002. Rutgers’ success on-the-field was matched with excellent academic achievement, as the team received the BIG EAST 2007-08 Team Academic Excellence Award, given to squads with the highest collective gradepoint averages in each conference sport. Moreover, women’s lacrosse was one of 50 schools that earned IWLCA Academic Squad honors, given to teams that have a collective GPA of 3.0 or higher. RU also saw two of its student-athletes named to the IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll in Rachel Doan and Jackie Lerner. A total of 159 student-athletes were named to the honor roll. The 2007 campaign was a banner season for the Scarlet Knights. The team posted a 12-5 regular season record, achieved a national ranking and earned a trip the BIG EAST semifinals. The 12 wins included victories over No. 11 Cornell, No. 18 Connecticut, and No. 6 Notre Dame. Their four regular-season losses were at the hands of then-No. 9 Princeton, then-No. 9 Georgetown, No. 12 Syracuse and No. 1 Northwestern. The team eventually fell to then-No. 7 Syracuse in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship. Individually, five RU players earned All-BIG EAST honors. Katie Batiuk picked up first team honors for the second consecutive year. She also received BIG EAST’s Midfielder of the Year award in 2005 and was named to the conference’s second team in 2003. Batiuk led the team in goals (42) and points (48), and shots taken (109). She was also named to the Tewaarton Trophy Watch List, an award that recognizes the top male and female varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. Nina Frankoski joined Batiuk on the BIG EAST first team, while Jamie Farewell and Anne Marchitello and Jessica Davis earned spots on the conference’s second team. Marchitello was named to the BIG EAST second team for the third-consecutive year. The team finished the season ranked No. 14, their highest ranking since a No. 11 standing during the 1999 regular season. The 12 wins tied the
third-most in team history and marked the second time Brand-Sias led a team to 12 victories during her tenure. 2006 started slowly for the Scarlet Knights, as they lost seven of their first nine games while dealing with many injuries. After losing consecutive one-goal games to Old Dominion (12-11; 3/28) and Temple (11-10; 3/31) to drop to 2-6, the team won three of its next four games, including three straight. Rutgers would finish the season winning five of its last seven games to finish 7-9. In 2005, Brand-Sias saw four of her players earn BIG EAST postseason honors. Catherine Seals and Marchitello earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors while Lyndsey Feldman and Batiuk earned All-BIG EAST First Team selections. Batiuk was named the Midfielder of the Year after just her second season with the Scarlet Knights. Batiuk ended the season with 59 points on 47 goals and 12 assists. She scored at least one goal in 22-straight games, dating back to her freshman season. Marchitello earned her first career league honor. The midfielder led the BIG EAST in ground balls in both overall and league games, totaling 41 on the season overall and 19 during conference action. Her 14 caused turnovers during BIG EAST play were tops in the league. She totaled 26 caused turnovers throughout the season to tie for second in the BIG EAST overall.

Rutgers began the 2004 season dropping a tight 14-13 game to the eventual national champion Northwestern Wildcats. The Scarlet Knights then went on a three-game win streak, but the toughness of their schedule caught up with them. Rutgers dropped an 8-6 heartbreaker to Cornell, 16-7 at Virginia Tech and 13-6 at No. 2 Georgetown. RU split its last eight games, with the highlight a 7-6 win over No. 6 Notre Dame.
PLAYING EXPERIENCE: Four-year letterwinner at Rutgers University. Member of the Canadian National Lacrosse Team from 19992004, earning a start on the Canadian team that finished fourth at the 2001 World Cup.
In 2003, Rutgers was among the leaders nationally in several different categories, including scoring defense (sixth), scoring margin (ninth), winning percentage (ninth) and caused turnovers (13th). Cristina Curiale and Lyndsey Feldman were also ranked among the national leaders. Feldman finished the 2003 season fourth in the NCAA in save percentage and 10th in goals-against average, while Curiale was 14th nationally in assists per game.
game average. Defensively, Fairfield finished first in the MAAC and 11th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing opponents to score an average of just 8.59 goals per game.
In her inaugural season at the helm of her alma mater, Brand-Sias led a Scarlet Knight resurgence. Under her direction, RU posted a 12-4 record – its first winning season in four years. She guided a Rutgers team that was picked to finish sixth in the BIG EAST preseason poll to a fourth-place finish in the conference, winning three BIG EAST games for the first time in school history.
Following her graduation, Brand-Sias remained with the program, serving as an assistant coach, where her responsibilities included working with the offense, recruiting, on-field instruction and administrative duties.
Brand-Sias’s immediate success earned her BIG EAST Coach of the Year laurels after just one season, an acknowledgement of the impressive turnaround she orchestrated of a program that had posted just seven wins in each of the three previous seasons. In her first season, Rutgers earned several impressive victories, including an upset of No. 14 Yale. The win catapulted the Scarlet Knights to a national ranking of 20th in the Brine/IWLCA Coaches Poll, a spot RU maintained for three-consecutive weeks. Four Scarlet Knights earned BIG EAST postseason honors, including a pair of first team and second team selections. Two RU players were recognized by IWLCA/US Lacrosse on its All-Mid Atlantic Region Second Team, while another was one of just 87 student-athletes nationally to be named to the organization’s academic honor roll. Brand-Sias came to Rutgers following one season as head coach at Fairfield University (2002), where she led the Stags to a 10-7 overall record. Fairfield advanced to the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament championship match, finishing the season with a perfect 6-0 record in league play. In only one season with the Stags, Brand-Sias’s highpowered offense was ranked seventh nationally with a 12.82 goals-per-
As a player, Brand-Sias starred as a four-year letterwinner at midfield for Rutgers (1996-99), helping to lead the Scarlet Knights to their first-ever national ranking and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999.
Brand-Sias continued to excel following her collegiate days as a member of the Canadian National Lacrosse Team from 1999-2004. She was a starter for the 2001 Canadian World Cup squad that placed fourth, losing to England in the bronze-medal game. Her athletic career began at Radnor (Pa.) High School, where she played three years of lacrosse and field hockey. With the lacrosse team, Brand-Sias was named the squad’s Outstanding Athlete of the Year as a sophomore, junior and senior, in addition to serving as the team captain in 1995. Also a standout field hockey player, Brand-Sias was named captain her senior year and was recognized as a Senior All-Star. She was named to the all-league and all-county second teams. An all-around athlete, BrandSias spent her winters running indoor track. She received the High School Master of Sports Award. She also founded Brand Elite, L.L.C., where she serves as the President and CEO, running various lacrosse camps and clinics throughout the summer. 2010 SEASON IN REVIEW
Rutgers women’s lacrosse concluded its 2010 season with an exceptional 11-5 record, after finishing only 7-9 the previous seasons. The Scarlet Knights brought back a valuable group of seniors mixed with a talented recruiting class from head coach Laura Brand-Sias and her staff.
the previous school record of eight, set by Jaime Whitlock (1996-99) against St. Joseph’s on April 4, 1998.
The Scarlet Knights put together another standout team performance, defeating Monmouth 18-9 at the RU Turf Field. McGinley, Schmitt, Kristen Anderson, Stephanie Anderson Steinberg, Cryan and Cantwell each had a hand in Rutgers’ dominating victory as they recorded two goals each in the double-digit win. Against the Hawks, senior attacker Meghan Flanagan moved into second place on the school’s all-time assists list with 68 assists for her career, eclipsing the 66 set by Elizabeth Chambers (1997200). Junior midfielder Shawn Lopez also had a career day with a game-high six draw controls.
Rutgers opened the 2010 season with a 5-0 record, their best start in school history. The Scarlet Knights started out with an unyielding 13-3 win against Temple receiving goals from 7 different players. Next, RU set a standard by defeating two top-20 teams. The Scarlet Knights broke a two game losing streak against then-No. 20 Cornell, defeating the Big Red 8-6. A tough effort from the Scarlet Knights defense and 13 saves on 19 shots on goal by freshman goalkeeper Lily Kalata helped Rutgers get past the Big Red. Their third-straight victory came on the road where the Scarlet Knights upset then-No.7/9 Princeton 12-11. Junior attacker Kristen Anderson scored a game-high five goals, while junior midfielder Marlena Welsh scored the game-winner with two minutes remaining. Confidently moving forward, Rutgers traveled to Delaware keeping things exciting as they landed on-top by only one goal (12-11). RU had five players record multiple goals as the team was led by senior attack Brooke Cantwell with three goals and two assists. Welsh scored her second game winning goal of the season to propel RU past the Blue Hens. Rutgers went on to triumph Saint Joseph’s 17-5 at home. Freshman midfielder Stephanie Anderson Welsh led the team with four goals apiece. Rutgers had four players with three or more goals as Cantwell and and sophomore attack Annie McGinley chipped in three goals each. The Scarlet Knights started strong, but they would meet their first heartbreak of the season in Hempstead, N.Y. against Hofstra, falling 10-9. Ranked 20th in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Poll, RU traveled to No. 17 Loyola for its first BIG EAST match of the season, losing 12-2 to the Greyhounds. Determined to not let the losing streak extend any further, the Scarlet Knights took on Denver in their four-straight road game, defeating the Pioneers 118. Cantwell led the team with a gamehigh four goals. Rutgers also saw two goals each from Kristin Anderson and sophomore attack Lindsey Watts. The solid team effort gave the Scarlet Knights their sixth win of the season. Rutgers closed out its four-game road trip at BIG EAST foe Syracuse, dropping a 17-10 result at the Carrier Dome. Cantwell recorded four goals; Welsh added three, while junior midfielder Jennifer Schmitt, Kristen Anderson and Steinberg each chipped one. This rollercoaster of events left the Scarlet Knights with a 6-3 overall record and 0-2 in BIG EAST play. Finally back home, Rutgers clinched their first BIG EAST Conference win against the Connecticut Huskies (15-10). Cantwell led the team with three goals and three assists. Kristin Anderson added three goals, while Welsh, Schmitt, McGinley and senior midfielder Mary Cryan contributed two goals apiece. Steinberg had a record-setting day, establishing a Rutgers mark for most draw controls in a game with 10 against the Huskies, surpassing
The next five games of the season would be BIG EAST Conference games. The Scarlet Knights cruised by Villanova with a 14-6 win with a matchup against No. 14 Georgetown up next. Despite an early 4-0 lead, against the Hoyas, the Scarlet Knights fell 19-12. Cryan, Cantwell and Welsh all recorded hat tricks, but it was not enough to regain the lead. Not to be deterred, Rutgers bounced back with an exciting overtime upset victory against 12th-ranked Notre Dame. Cantwell scored three goals including the game-winner. Sophomore midfielder Brittany Davis, Kristen Anderson, Welsh, and Cryan scored two goals each, while freshman goalkeeper Lily Kalata had a career-high 17 saves on 28 shots on goal. Rutgers dropped its next match against Louisville 14-9 as Cantwell scored three goals and led the team in scoring for the sixth time during the season. Junior defender Mary Moran put on a stellar defensive performance tallying three groundballs and two caused turnovers. The final game of the season and fifth straight conference match ended with an awe-inspiring 21-8 win over Cincinnati. Cryan, Cantwell and junior Katherine Marino each scored a game-high four goals. Cantwell scored her ninth hat-trick of the season and marked the fourth time she had scored four goals in the 2010 season. The Scarlet Knights also received first-time goals from senior defenders Emily Penn and Karie McGuire. Senior Faith Richards recorded her first goal since 2007, while Welsh tallied a career-best three assists. Flanagan added a game-high four assists, ending her career with 75 assists, placing a solid hold on second place on the all-time assists list. Several Scarlet Knights received individual recognition for their efforts in the 2010 season. Cantwell earned First Team All-BIG EAST, First Team IWLCA All-Mid Atlantic honors as well as IWLCA All-American honors. Cryan, Welsh and Kalata were also named to the IWLCA MidAtlantic team. The five IWLCA awards tie for the most in a season for Rutgers since 1999. Kalata was also named to the All-Rookie squad by womenslacrosse.com, in addition to her two BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors during the season. Cantwell, one of the most accomplished players in Rutgers Women’s lacrosse history, finished her career having scored a goal in her final 26 games – dating back to the 2009 season. Cantwell had started in all 65 games since her freshman year, finishing third all-time in draws (140), fifth in goals (134) and fifth in total points (182). The Scarlet Knights not only performed well on the field, but also in the classroom during 2010. The squad was named an IWLCA All-Academic squad, while McGuire and Flanagan were named to the IWLCA Academic honor roll.

HELPING THE COMMUNITY
The Rutgers women’s lacrosse program adopted a little sister, Genna Camiolo, through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FOJ). FOJ is a charitable organization, created to raise public awareness regarding pediatric brain tumors. The funds raised are used to improve the quality of life for children who are afflicted with a brain tumor as well as make contributions to pediatric brain research. Genna is present at many of the Scarlet Knights’ home matches – even serving as an honorary captain and taking part in the coin toss. For more information on Genna, visit www.caringbridge.org/nj/gennahenna and for more on the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, log on to www.friendsofjaclyn.org. Committed to serving the neighboring community, the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team routinely participates in a number of initiatives throughout the year. The Scarlet Knights most recently took part in the Race For Hope in Philadelphia this past November. The National Brain Tumor Society’s Race for Hope - Philadelphia is very proud to be able to celebrate its fourth year of supporting brain tumor research and patient services on November 1, 2009. The Race for Hope 5K Run/ Walk is one of Philadelphia’s most successful volunteer and community-based events. It is one of the country’s largest fundraisers for the brain tumor community.

FOJ’s STORY
FOJ’s PROGRAMS
The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is inspired by Jaclyn Murphy. In 2004, she was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor, when she was 9 years old. Jaclyn’s strength, courage, relentless spirit and joy for life are an inspiration to those who know her. When granted her “Make-A-Wish,” Jaclyn asked, “for all the children in the hospitals to be healed.”
Adopt-A-Child Program is for children with pediatric brain tumors. Any child with a brain tumor is welcome. As of December 2008, we have over 80 children adopted with over 200 sports teams anxiously waiting. We have children in 17 different types of sports all across the country.

FOJ’s MISSION Our mission is to improve the quality of life for children suffering from pediatric brain tumors. The foundation is based on love, support and friendship between the child, the team and the child’s family. We pair a child with a college or high school athletic team based on geographic proximity so the child can be involved with the team as much as possible. The child is “adopted” by the team and becomes an honorary team member. The gift is in the relationship. The child gains a new support network of loving friends and the team learns to see the world with new eyes. Everyone wins.

In 2005, the Northwestern University Women’s Lacrosse team adopted Jaclyn as an honorary team member. She inspired the Wildcats through a magical “perfect season,” which resulted in NU’s first NCAA National Championship, in any sport, in 64 years. Jaclyn created lasting friendships with the team. She and her family recognized this positively affected Jaclyn’s happiness and health. Northwestern recognized that their relationship with Jaclyn opened their eyes and hearts to a deeper appreciation for life. Jaclyn’s quality of life improved. She wanted other children with pediatric brain tumors to have similar experiences. The Murphys realized that it is ultimately the love and support of others that gives people the inspiration and courage to get through this kind of journey. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation improves the quality of life for everyone involved.

Safe on the Sidelines is an adoption program for the siblings of the afflicted child. The entire family is affected when a child is diagnosed. Many times the healthy child feels scared and alone. This program allows the siblings to have their own team and to feel special and supported. A firsthand glance: Emily beck’s mom, Carol, on Emily’s adoption by Louisville Lacrosse “Having these athletes involved in Emily’s life is great. Emily keeps talking about it. She is even trying to teach the neighbors and her brothers in how to play lacrosse, which is funny. Even our older daughter Alex, talks about the girls, and how they played with her and cared for her too, not just Emily. Jacob loves the jersey, and has worn it four times in one week. So getting involved with FOJ is a wonderful experience for all of our family members.”

HELPING THE COMMUNITY
In addition to this and many other community service project, the Scarlet Knights also took part in Love Day – a trash collection project designed to clean up the New Brunswick area. The team assisted with the Special Olympics, introducing lacrosse to athletes through a clinic at the Fall Festival in Lawrenceville, N.J. Rutgers held a university-wide food drive, during which women’s lacrosse adopted a family and donated food/goods during the holiday season. Annually, the Scarlet Knights run in the Big Chill a 5k race aimed at provided toys and donations to local children. During their time, several members of the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team have participated in various Toy and Blood Drives, as well as the Read Across America program.

RICHARD L. MCCORMICK PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on the Rutgers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington. Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American public research universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning experience for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems; diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the people of New Jersey. President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate education at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expanded access to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popular First-Year Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no more than 20 students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty. Other initiatives undertaken during Dr. McCormick’s tenure include: * The Rutgers Future Scholars Program, a pilot project to encourage minority and low-income teenagers from the university’s host cities to pursue higher education by offering mentorship and college preparation support, and the promise of free tuition to those admitted to Rutgers. * Establishment of the first-ever universitywide alumni body, the Rutgers University Alumni Association. * Rutgers Against Hunger, an initiative that combines volunteerism, research, education, and donations to address food security in the state of New Jersey. * Rutgers-Camden’s first-ever doctoral-level academic program, a Ph.D. in childhood studies – the first in the nation in this emerging discipline. * Establishment of the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers-Newark’s first new school in more than three decades. Born in 1947, President McCormick earned a B.A. in American studies from Amherst College in 1969 and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1976. He is married to Joan Barry McCormick, RU ’88. Dr. McCormick has three children, Betsy, Michael, and Katie.

TIM PERNETTI DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A lifetime New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former student-athlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on February 26, 2009. He oversees 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the university’s peer institutions. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a master’s degree in communication in 1995.
CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College Sports, and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches during game action. Prior to joining CBS College Sports Network, Pernetti served eight years at ABCTV and ABC Sports most recently as Director of Programming, where he was integral in acquiring, managing and developing several ABC Sports properties including college football, the Bowl Championship Series, and college basketball. For five years, Pernetti handled relationships and negotiated television rights with all of the major collegiate conferences. As a student at Rutgers, Pernetti was a four-year letterwinner at tight end on the Rutgers football squad. He was also the color commentator for Rutgers Football on the Rutgers Football Radio Network and announced weekly NFL games nationally on Sports USA Radio. A resident of Oakland, N.J., Pernetti is married to the former Danielle Bahto. His wife also graduated from Rutgers and was a letterwinner on the women’s lacrosse team. Danielle and Tim are the proud parents of their three children – Max, Conor and Natalie.
Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all screens for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previously CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multimedia leader in college sports programming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008. Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creating multiplatform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigated through a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways to serve college sports fans. Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours of event programming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further, he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relationship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference. In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media partnership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and underserved sports is evidenced by the network’s unprecedented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including

46 A BRIEF HISTORY
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 27 degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and six schools offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and New Brunswick. Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 as Queen’s College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass Residential College, part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in 1918, and the School of Education (now Graduate School of Education) in 1924. In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University, a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number of schools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women when the New Jersey College for Women was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University College, an evening division, was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under the GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designated Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey. A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. An ambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a coeducational residential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the Graduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged. In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’ strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 63 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 230 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sciences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve life both in New Jersey and around the world. A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions and strengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences. With 27 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers over 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduates more than 10,000 students each year, and has more than 380,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jersey counties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century. Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university’s goals for the future include the continued provision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society.
