RU has tallied an impressive 5019-1 record during his first three years “On the Banks.” Last season, Rutgers finished at No. 22 in the final 2009-10 NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll after posting a 19-5-1 record. Seven Scarlet Knights earned NCAA bids, the most since 1960. The No. 22 ranking is the highest in school history. Nine of Rutgers 10 starters are returning for the 2010-11 campaign. The Goodale led squad put together a 15-match unbeaten streak from early December to late February which was the longest streak in school history. In 2008-09, Rutgers broke the school record for victories in a single season with a 20-7 mark in dual action. Three Scarlet Knights earned NCAA Championships bids, which was the most for RU since 2004. The Scarlet Knights tallied an 11-7 overall record and 5-3 mark in Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) action in 2007-08. Two wrestlers reached the NCAA Championships. Goodale maximized his strong high school coaching background and brought in a recruiting class ranked nationally by W.I.N. Magazine (No. 3) and InterMat (No. 4). Goodale’s first recruiting class included InterMat’s No. 2 overall senior recruit in Scott Winston, InterMat’s 17th-best recruit in Trevor Melde and USA Wrestling’s 19thbest 171-pound wrestler in Dan Rinaldi. Goodale was a three-time New Jersey “Coach of the Year” at Jackson Memorial High School in Jackson, N.J., before becoming the sixth coach in Rutgers wrestling history. “I have such a passion for New Jersey wrestling,” Goodale said. “It’s going to be a challenge, but I’m up for the challenge. Seven Scarlet Knights earned NCAA bids, the most since 1960. The No. 22 ranking is the highest in school history. Nine of Rutgers 10 starters are returning for the 2010-11 campaign. SCARLET KNIGHTS TRAINING METHODS GLADIATOR TRAINING

Rutgers wrestling goes through a combination of workouts they call “Gladiator Training.” One of the goals of “Gladiator Training” is to create functional strength in unconventional positions. The tools utilized for training are: four 250-pound tractor tires, an eight pound hammer, a bungee cord harness, an 18-pound stick, and a sand pit. The student-athletes are placed into stations that require them to perform exercises with the various tools. The exercises vary from flipping the tractor tires and then jumping in and out of them, hitting the tires with the hammer, doing sprints against the bungee harness in the sand pit, and attempting to drive one of your teammates out of the sand pit while you both are holding on to the stick. The second part of the training puts the teammates from each weight class together. The wrestlers use their teammate as the resistance for the exercise. The partners must complete: Buddy Cleans: the wrestler picks up his teammate, holding him perpendicular to the ground, raises him to his head, and lowers him to his waist. Buddy Crunches: wrap your legs around your teammate’s waist while your teammate is standing and complete crunches. Bear Drag: one partner lays on his back and holds on to his teammate’s neck. The wrestler on all fours must drag his teammate on the ground while maintaining proper bear crawl form. Hip Switch: the wrestler picks up his teammate in a belly to back position, loads him onto one hip and then switches him to other hip, never allowing him to touch the ground. Kamikaze Run: each athlete jogs four lines of approximately 20 yards, sprints one line and jogs three lines, sprints two lines and jogs one, etc., until all four lines are sprints.

2010-11 SEASON OUTLOOK 125 125 and 141 pounds are probably our deepest weights. Vinny Dellefave still has a redshirt he can take but, at this point in the preseason, we plan on wrestling him with Matt Fusco and Joey Langel since there’s really not a clear cut favorite right now. Joey Langel is a returning national qualifier, won 32 matches as a freshman last year. Vinny was starting at the beginning of last year and Matt Fusco had a good redshirt season last year. It is probably our deepest weight. There is not a clear cut favorite. That will work itself out as we go through the wrestle-offs and the first couple of tournaments in the year.

149 149 will probably come down to Mario Mason and Joe Mcauley. Luke Rigolisio is wrestling really well right now too. So again, it’s a really good weight for us with four guys. Mario is a national qualifier, probably our favorite to start at the weight class. He transferred from Minnesota and wrestled the Big Ten schedule last year. He was fifth in the Big Ten, nationally ranked all year long. Obviously nationally ranked this year, depending on the polls, as high as ten. But Joe Mcauley and Luke Rigolisio are solid wrestlers who will push him so this is also a pretty good weight for us.

133 Mike Demarco will start in the beginning of the season at 133. Mike had a really great summer after moving up from 125 so we’re excited to see him get out there. We don’t have a whole lot of depth at this weight so Mike will get plenty of chances to wrestle.

157 157 is Daryl Cocozzo, who is a three-time national qualifier and he is the clear favorite at that weight as we speak today. Daryl is having a really good preseason and again he is nationally ranked in every poll. He is a fifth-year guy who comes in with a ton of experience and we’re certainly excited to see what he does in his last collegiate season. Daryl will be pushed by Nick Visicaro, who we plan on wrestling this season. We’re not redshirting Nick, he’s going to wrestle and he will get plenty of matches. He is a very talented freshman and we just feel that it is necessary for him to step right in and understand what this level is about. We want to keep him on the straight and narrow and keep him focused because he is really talented. Anthony Volpe will redshirt this season but will gain invaluable experience from training with Daryl and Nick.

141 141 may also be our deepest weight class with Billy Ashnault moving up. Billy is a two-time national qualifier. He has a redshirt year available if we decided to go that route. That would probably make some sense, just for the fact that we have David Greenwald, who is a fifth-year senior, and Trevor Melde who is a returning national qualifier. No. 1 ranked guy in the EIWA also have Jordan Beverly, who is a freshman coming in that is very very good. Jordan was a high school national champ at a very big 141, so we have to make a decision on him. It’s probably our deepest weight with five really, really good kids there.

Alex Caruso & Mario Mason

10

165 165 is Scott Winston who is coming off a redshirt year. Scott is another national qualifier from two years ago and depending on the polls, he is ranked as high as eight in the country. We feel that this is one of our better weights obviously. I think this is the year Scott really needs to make himself present on the national scene and I think he feels that way as well. He has some pretty high goals and aspirations for the season and we feel that he has the potential to achieve them. Evan Brewer will back up Scott and then we plan on redshirting Greg Zannetti. Nick Visicaro may also get a chance to compete at this weight class. 174 174 is Alex Caruso, a transfer from Lehigh. Alex is another fifth-year senior who gives us a ton of experience in

2010-11 SEASON OUTLOOK big matches. He obviously wrestled a ton of big matches at Lehigh, so he has already been a tremendous impact on our program, in the way he trains and his extra work outs, extra work ethic. We’re excited about that. At this time, we are looking at if we have to redshirt Brendan Ard or not. We’re not quite sure. We’ll make a decision with what we’re going to do with Brendan as we get through this preseason. We also have Mike Cucinotta who has wrestled anywhere in our lineup the last four years from 174 to 184 to 197. He has been all over the place and he started at 174. He gives us some depth at that weight and, again, he has been with us for four years so he’s another senior who brings experience.

of twelve last year. He is a two time national qualifier and he is certainly the clear favorite, but we have some pretty good heavyweights. We have some guys that are very athletic, Sean DeDeyn and Carl Buchholz. Sean is a fifth-year senior who has been with us for three years and who has really helped with DJ coming on and getting better because he’s a constant workout partner. We’re very excited about Carl Buchholz who is a redshirt freshman, just a big strong kid from Pennsylvania. He’s a pretty good athlete. He’s had a great preseason and he has had a great start to October, so we’re excited about Carl’s future here.

184 184 pounds is another good weight for us. We have two guys there that have experience and both wrestled last year as freshman. Dan Rinaldi is probably a favorite. He is a national qualifier and he did a great job in the offseason of getting bigger. He came into camp at about 205, so he certainly filled out the weight. He is a tremendous mat wrestler, so he has an advantage when he is on the mat. He had a great summer and great spring. We’re excited to have him in. Jesse Boyden will push Danny and wrestle tough matches for us. He is another good one. 197 197 is a weight class, really, that is up in the air. We don’t know where we’ll go with Danny Hopkins, who is a junior college All-American. He’ll be eligible second semester because of credits from his transfer status, so he’ll be in the lineup second semester. Danny Seidenberg will probably start the year at that weight. We don’t know what we’re going to do with Mike Wagner at this point. He is a very talented freshman, who we are really excited about. We think he has a huge future here at Rutgers, so we’ll see where we’re at with that. If we’re going to wrestle him, we want to make sure he is wrestling matches. We’re not just going to have him just because of depth. We want to make sure it’s not a waste of a year for him. Chris Orzechowski is coming back from an injury and will add depth and competitiveness to the weight class. HWT Our clear favorite is DJ Russo. Depending on the poll, he is ranked fourth in the country. He advanced to the round

RICHARD L . MCCORMIC K PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY Richard L. McCormick is the 19th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. A scholar of American political history who began his academic career on the Rutgers faculty, he returned as president in 2002 after serving as provost of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and president of the University of Washington. Dr. McCormick’s goal is to advance Rutgers within the top tier of American public research universities. His ambitions for the university include an enriched learning experience for every student; teaching and research focused on global human problems; diversity of students, faculty, staff, and programs; and deeper connections with the people of New Jersey. President McCormick led a major restructuring and reinvigoration of undergraduate education at Rutgers-New Brunswick, the university’s largest campus. The plan merged four undergraduate colleges into a School of Arts and Sciences, expanded access to academic programs and learning communities, and established a popular First-Year Seminar program that offers more than 100 courses – each with no more than 20 students – on a wide range of topics taught by top faculty. Other initiatives undertaken during Dr. McCormick’s tenure include: * The Rutgers Future Scholars Program, a pilot project to encourage minority and low-income teenagers from the university’s host cities to pursue higher education by offering mentorship and college preparation support, and the promise of free tuition to those admitted to Rutgers. * Establishment of the first-ever universitywide alumni body, the Rutgers University Alumni Association. * Rutgers Against Hunger, an initiative that combines volunteerism, research, education, and donations to address food security in the state of New Jersey. * Rutgers-Camden’s first-ever doctoral-level academic program, a Ph.D. in childhood studies – the first in the nation in this emerging discipline. * Establishment of the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers-Newark’s first new school in more than three decades. Born in 1947, President McCormick earned a B.A. in American studies from Amherst College in 1969 and a Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1976. He is married to Joan Barry McCormick, RU ’88. Dr. McCormick has three children, Betsy, Michael, and Katie.

TIM PERNETTI DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS A lifetime New Jersey native with a strong passion for his alma mater, Tim Pernetti has come full-circle in becoming one of the nation’s youngest leaders in college athletics. A former student-athlete “On the Banks”, Pernetti was named Rutgers’ sixth Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on February 26, 2009. He oversees 24 men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams in New Brunswick, a larger number than fielded at most of the university’s peer institutions. Pernetti has been influential in the world of college athletics since he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass media from Rutgers in 1993, and a master’s degree in communication in 1995. Prior to returning to Rutgers, Pernetti was the Executive Vice President, Content, for CBS College Sports Network. In that role, he oversaw the rights and relationship business, on-air talent, and all network programming and content on air, online and across all screens for the nation’s first company dedicated to college sports. Pernetti helped to build the CBS College Sports Network, previously CSTV, prior to its launch in 2003, and has played a critical role in establishing it as the multimedia leader in college sports programming, content, news and information. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sports Business Journal Forty under Forty Award, and the Multichannel News 40 under 40 Award both in 2008. Charged with developing relationships, acquiring rights and creating multiplatform original programming for the first ever 24-hour sports college sports network, Pernetti successfully navigated through a complicated web of media rights deals to come up with new ways to serve college sports fans. Pernetti worked closely with the NCAA and hundreds of schools in every major conference, securing over 2,500 hours of event programming each year and multiple NCAA Championships across 35 men’s and women’s sports. Pernetti was in charge of the CBS College Sports Network exclusive long-term agreements with the US Naval Academy, Mountain West Conference, Conference USA, and the Atlantic 10. Further, he managed company relationships with more than 30 conferences and thousands of institutions. Pernetti remains most proud of establishing a strong relationship in women’s collegiate sports including the establishment of a women’s basketball game of the week package in 2004 with the Big East Conference. In 2006, Pernetti spearheaded a landmark multi-media partnership with the NCAA to make CBS College Sports Network the home of Division II Sports. The innovative deal effectively increased the scope and reach of NCAA Division II sports with hundreds of games now available nationally via the broadcast network and online. Pernetti’s commitment to providing greater exposure to women’s and underserved sports is evidenced by the network’s unprecedented coverage of lacrosse and volleyball, among others. He has also been at the forefront of the development and creation of the Collegiate Nationals, which crowns champions in dozens of high endurance sports, and innovative original production including

CBS College Sports Network’s groundbreaking NCAA March Madness Central, NCAA March Madness Highlights on CBS College Sports, and the WIRED franchise which gives viewers an inside look at games and events through wireless microphones on coaches during game action. Prior to joining CBS College Sports Network, Pernetti served eight years at ABCTV and ABC Sports most recently as Director of Programming, where he was integral in acquiring, managing and developing several ABC Sports properties including college football, the Bowl Championship Series, and college basketball. For five years, Pernetti handled relationships and negotiated television rights with all of the major collegiate conferences. As a student at Rutgers, Pernetti was a four-year letterwinner at tight end on the Rutgers football squad. He was also the color commentator for Rutgers Football on the Rutgers Football Radio Network and announced weekly NFL games nationally on Sports USA Radio. A resident of Oakland, N.J., Pernetti is married to the former Danielle Bahto. His wife also graduated from Rutgers and was a letterwinner on the women’s lacrosse team. Danielle and Tim are the proud parents of their three children – Max, Conor and Natalie.

49 A BRIEF HISTORY

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is one of the leading universities in the nation. The university is comprised of 27 degree-granting divisions; 10 undergraduate colleges, 11 graduate schools, and six schools offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Five are located in Camden, eight in Newark, and 13 in New Brunswick and one in Newark and New Brunswick. Rutgers has a unique history as a colonial college, a land-grant institution, and a state university. Chartered in 1766 as Queen’s College, the eighth institution of higher learning to be founded in the colonies, the school opened its doors in New Brunswick in 1771 with a handful of first-year students. During its early years, the college developed as a classic liberal arts institution. In 1825, the name of the college was changed to honor a former trustee and Revolutionary War veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers. Rutgers College became the land-grant college of New Jersey in 1864, resulting in the establishment of the Rutgers Scientific School, featuring departments of agriculture, engineering, and chemistry. Further expansion in the sciences came with the founding of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in 1880, the College of Engineering (now the School of Engineering) in 1914, and the College of Agriculture (now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences) in 1921. The precursors to several other Rutgers divisions were also established during this period: the College of Pharmacy (now the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy) in 1892, the New Jersey College for Women (now Douglass Residential College, part of the School of Arts and Sciences) in 1918, and the School of Education (now Graduate School of Education) in 1924. In 1924, Rutgers College officially became Rutgers University, a reflection of the institution’s rapidly expanding number of schools and academic programs. Early in the century, Rutgers had begun offering educational opportunities to women when the New Jersey College for Women was founded in 1918, and to adult learners when University College, an evening division, was established in 1934. After World War II, enrollment exploded as Rutgers admitted all qualified candidates under the GI Bill. Rutgers was becoming an institution for all people, and in 1945 and 1956, state legislative acts formally designated Rutgers as The State University of New Jersey. A flurry of expansion ensued. The University of Newark (now Rutgers–Newark) joined Rutgers in 1946, followed by the College of South Jersey (now Rutgers–Camden) in 1950. An ambitious building program added libraries, classrooms, and student housing across the three regional campuses. In 1969, Livingston College opened, providing a coeducational residential experience with a special commitment to diversity. Graduate education in the arts and sciences grew through the establishment of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the Graduate School–Newark, and the Graduate School–Camden. Professional schools were formed to serve students in the fields of business; communication, information, and library studies; criminal justice; education; fine arts; law; management and labor relations; nursing; planning and public policy; psychology; public affairs and administration; and social work. Meanwhile, as industry and government sought partners in solving problems and advancing knowledge, the concept of the research university emerged. In 1981, Rutgers adopted a blueprint for its transformation into a major public research university. With increased support from state, federal, and corporate partners, Rutgers’ strength in research grew dramatically. In 1989, in recognition of its enhanced stature, Rutgers was invited to join the prestigious Association of American Universities, an organization comprising the top 63 research universities in North America. Today, professors and students work in more than 230 specialized research centers, unraveling mysteries in marine sciences, early childhood education, neuroscience, advanced materials, climate change, nutrition, homeland security, transportation, stem cells, and many other areas that can improve life both in New Jersey and around the world. A 2007 major reorganization of undergraduate education in New Brunswick reinvigorated the undergraduate experience for both students and faculty by combining the traditions and strengths of four undergraduate liberal arts colleges—Douglass, Livingston, Rutgers, and University—into a single School of Arts and Sciences. With 27 schools and colleges, Rutgers offers over 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degree programs. The university graduates more than 10,000 students each year, and has more than 380,000 living alumni residing in all 50 states and on six continents. Rutgers also sponsors community initiatives in all 21 New Jersey counties. Universitywide, new degree programs, research endeavors, and community outreach are in development to meet the demands of the 21st century. Today, Rutgers continues to grow, both in its facilities and in the variety and depth of its educational and research programs. The university’s goals for the future include the continued provision of the highest quality education, along with the increased support of research and commitment to public service to meet the needs of society.
