Warmest personal greetings, Each year we look forward to sharing our beautiful Fredric Rubel Magazine with all of you, our friends and customers. This year we are especially excited to share the new and exciting pieces of jewelry and watches we have selected for the upcoming holiday season. We also have a special feature article on our dad, Fredric Rubel. If you are new to our company and never had a chance to meet Fredric, we hope you will enjoy reading about our amazing father, husband, friend and visionary. This November we will be unveiling our new Kwiat Boutique in our Mission Viejo location. This partnership between the Kwiat Family and the Rubels combines over 200 years of making and providing classic and timeless diamond jewelry. We hope that you will stop in and see this new in-store boutique dedicated to the spectacular diamond jewelry from Kwiat. I believe all of us are ready to gather with friends and family and enjoy the holidays! This season should be very special as we renew traditions that we probably took for granted before the pandemic. We are so grateful to be able to share in your traditions and milestone celebrations. We, too, have missed seeing everyone and want to wish you all a very happy, safe and warm holiday season. With gratitude, 6.41ct Fancy Yellow Radiant Diamond in a Hand fabricated Platinum and 18K Yellow Gold setting.

CELEBRATING

FREDRIC Fredric H Rubel’s employee of the year is the company’s beloved namesake, an inspiration to us all

Every year, Fredric Rubel Jewelers likes to pay tribute to an

outstanding employee — someone who has gone above and beyond the norm to make a contribution to the business and its culture, and who goes out of their way to make customers feel welcome. Someone who possesses a love for, and an aboveaverage understanding of the products. This year, that special employee is Fredric himself, the name behind the business that his sons David and Gary are proud to carry on today. “The store is still called Fredric H Rubel Jewelers, because he truly set the bar for us,” says David Rubel. “From the way he taught us to run the stores to the way he lives life, Fredric is one-of-a-kind. He built the business into what it is today, and developed a strong relationship with every customer. We are proud to follow in his footsteps as local family business owners and members of this great community.” The business was established in 1928 by Barney and Rose Rubel. Newly married, they were on their way to a romantic honeymoon in Big Bear Lake and stopped for the night in San Bernardino before taking what was then a one-day trip from there up to the mountain resort. While in San Bernardino, they noticed some newly built storefronts, and decided to contact a relative for financial support and start a jewelry business. Fredric Harold Rubel was thirteen years old by the time they opened their second store, in 1948, and he already knew it would be his calling. He prepared himself well, first, by attending Berkeley, and later by becoming a certified gemologist and appraiser. He joined the family business full time in 1956, and a year later married Joan and started a family: sons David and Gary, and daughter Ellen. Back when Fredric joined the business, the store carried more than just jewelry. The shelves

were stocked with everything from silverware and electric shavers to writing instruments and crystalware. “The first thing dad did was refocus the merchandise,” says David. “He narrowed the inventory down to fine jewelry and timepieces, and he would only stock the best. He started carrying Rolex in 1968, which makes us the oldest independent Rolex jeweler in California.”Fredric also established early partnerships with brands like Lazare Kaplan, David Yurman and others. “They represented the peak of the high end,” says David. “We had a very curated boutique, long before it was called that.” In 1971, Fredric opened a third store, at the mall in San Bernardino, and changed the name to Fredric H. Rubel Jewelers. By then, he had completed his Graduate Gemologist degree at the Gemological Institute of America, and had become a member of the American Gem Society. Only a select number of jewelers from across the country are members of this prestigious industry organization, which was built on integrity, education and consumer protection. Fredric is retired now. He and Joan have been playing a lot of bridge, and have traveled extensively over the past 20 years. They have also been very supportive of all six grandchildren, attending sporting events, school events and high school and college graduations. “He still keeps tabs on what’s new with our clients, most of which were his longtime customers, and he loves to see the new pieces from our favorite designers,” says David. “Unfortunately, he now has Alzheimer’s disease, and his symptoms have really accelerated over the past few months,” says David. “We were all able to get together for Father’s Day in June and his birthday in May, but I’m not sure we will have another opportunity to celebrate with him now.” As sad as this news is, David takes heart in the knowledge that, throughout his life, his father has been an inspiration to him and to so many others. “We learned a lot from him, but above all, my dad and mom taught us all how to be kind,” says David. “How to listen, how to live

learned a lot from “ We him, but above all, my dad and mom taught

by the Golden Rule. What they taught us about life, we applied to running our jewelry business.”

EVERYTHING ENAMEL Celebrate your personality and style with Locket X Color & Zodiac Designs. In 18K Gold Vermeil over Sterling Silver with enamel, they make the perfect colorful additions to any of your layered necklaces! Lockets are a foundation of the Monica Rich Kosann Brand. They were the first fine jewelry pieces introduced when they launched our collection. Monica Rich Kosann has worked hard to create both the finest quality lockets available anywhere, and the broadest selection of locket necklaces in both sterling silver and 18k gold. One of the design initiatives they always wanted to bring to this essential fine jewelry category was color. With that in mind we have introduced our Locket X ColorTM Collection. Lockets by their very nature are empowering pieces of jewelry that allow us to be inspired by the stories they tell. The ability to also choose the color you like best can add yet another degree of personalization. A palette of colors was used to create this collection of enamel lockets that are both contemporary in their style and the perfect shades to wear every day.

Locket X Color is a collection designed to bring happiness. To make the colors more vibrant we combine them with 18k gold vermeil — the finest form of gold plating. Gold vermeil is an extra thick layer of gold (in our case 2.5 microns of it — a legal standard defining vermeil) over sterling silver (so our styles are marked with the 925 sterling mark). Many of the styles have also been accented with gemstones like blue and green sapphires. Like all of our locket necklaces, the Locket X Color styles can be personalized with pictures or text using our Locket Bar. Upload photos from your phone, tablet or desktop and print them in your home or office perfectly sized to the locket you choose.

WHAT’S YOUR SIGN? The perfect addition to the charm necklace in your jewelry box is one that reaches for the heavens to celebrate your sign of the zodiac. Zodiac jewelry is a wonderful opportunity to tell your unique story. The Monica Rich Kosann Zodiac X Color collection incorporates a singular design concept. They created the collection in 18k gold vermeil over sterling silver and combined each design with rich everyday enamel colors. The smooth surface of the enamel was something they worked hard to achieve so that it would be an elegant complement to the symbols of the zodiac. The collection is accented throughout with hand set white sapphires. Each piece can be purchased with Monica’s signature black steel chain or alone as a zodiac charm that can be added to a necklace chain you already own. On any chain, the zodiac necklace will be one you treasure and wear every day. If you happen to own a piece from their Locket X Color collection, your zodiac necklace would be the perfect layering piece with your locket, but we also love it paired with any of the 18k gold short or petite charm necklace styles. In addition, they have also added an extra loop to our black steel chain, so you adjust your zodiac necklace to 16” or 17”.

VINTAGE DIAMONDS FRED LEIGHTON ROUND® A KWIAT EXCLUSIVE First developed in the 1890s, the old European diamond cut was the precursor to what we know today as the round brilliant diamond. At the time, diamonds were cut by hand. The result was stones that were not necessarily precise, but romantic and charismatic, with large facets that glimmered in candlelight. By the 1930s, advanced technology led to the uniform faceting and updated proportions of the modern round brilliant diamond and many older stones were re-cut in the modern style. That’s why it can be difficult to find a beautifully cut old European diamond these days, especially in the colorless and near colorless range. And that’s why we created the Fred Leighton Round diamond—a perfected old European cut for discerning jewelry lovers who yearn for the understated elegance of an antique stone at the highest quality.

Classics revisited

YURMAN

David Yurman works with his favorite motifs and iconic designs this year to bring us new collections that are fresh and classic at the same time. Whether it’s a new interpretation of the Art Deco aesthetic, a renewal of the signature Cable motif, or a flash of light represented by rays of metal and diamonds, David Yurman’s creative genius shines through.

Angelika four point earrings in 18k yellow gold with diamonds.

Angelika four point necklace in 18k yellow gold with diamonds.

Angelika linear ring in 18k yellow gold.

ANGELIKA: The Angelika collection incorporates many of the technical refinements explored through David Yurman’s high jewelry creations. Angelika was a year in development, and what makes it unique are the individual sculptural filaments radiating from a central point in the collection’s designs. Each delicate filament has its own square shape with a surface textured by Cable, diamonds, or a smooth, high polish. When bundled together, the fineness and delicacy of the filaments create not only movement but an ethereal play of light. The collection is available in both 18k gold and sterling silver. Each metal ray is hand finished, and the diamonds are hand set.

In this collection, David Yurman explores the circle, a timeless symbol of unity — a shape without beginning or end. With unique gemstones thought to bring healing and strength, the pieces in the Elements collection are the ultimate amulets. They appeal to the person who is seeking meaning in their jewelry, allowing each wearer to create their own personal story about who they are and how they connect with the world.

THOROUGHBRED LOOP: This season, David Yurman returns to his equestrian roots with a new collection inspired by boleadoras or the bolas, a loop used by Argentine and Uruguayan gauchos to round up cattle. David transforms this simple form into sculptural bracelets, rings, and handcrafted chains. As with all of his equestrian-inspired collections, Thoroughbred Loop mixes silver and gold, emphasizing the beauty Thoroughbred loop ring with 18k yellow gold.

“Ultimate Gray is emblematic of solid and dependable elements that are everlasting and provide a firm foundation,” says Leatrice Penny Preville colored sapphire pieces. Explore the pieces online at www.RubelJewelers.com.

Eiseman of the Pantone Color Institute. “It is the color of pebbles on the beach whose weathered appearance highlights an ability to stand the test of time. It quietly assures, encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness, and resilience.” The second color, Illuminating, is one of strength and positivity, she says. “Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow, sparkling with vivacity. It is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter.”

Comfort colors, new neutrals, and a touch of cheery neons brighten our world Likewise, the new colors released by paint companies this year are all about comfort. A new generation of saturated, restful neutrals provide a sense of sanctuary. Sherwin-Williams likes Urbane Bronze, a gray shade that is slightly darker than Pantone’s Ultimate. The company also released a light burgundy called Passionate, along with a pale apricot it describes as having overtones of “barely there pink,” like “minimally finished hardwood.”

Benjamin Moore goes earthy with a goldish hue it calls Chestertown Buff, and follows up with the blue-green Agean Teal, a color that “invites us to take a moment to reflect and reset.” Glidden likewise likes blue hues right now, introducing Aqua Fiesta, the tone of crystal-clear tropical water, and PPG released Misty Aqua, which it says is “all about looking ahead to cloudless skies and imagining destinations.”

Kwiat Stackable Colored Bangles & Rings in Sapphire & Tsavorite Garnet.

And then there is green. Every paint company has one shade or another of this organic tone on its palette this year, from Behr’s pale green Jojoba to Pantone’s olive-hued Pepper Stem. Green is currently the hottest color in luxury watches, and it has long been the color that represents ecology and the environment.

Here are some fun facts about color, including symbolism and lore, to remind us of how important color is to our world, and how dull things would be without it. Red is the color of love. It radiates passion and vitality. Two magical elements are associated with red: fire and blood, which represent warmth and life itself. It is the color of intensity, appetite, and adventure. It’s an attention-getting tone, hence the red stop sign and the red fire engine — and 77 percent of all national flags include red. Yellow is the most luminous of all the colors in the spectrum, and it therefore captures our attention more than any other — the human eye processes yellow first. Many dive watches have yellow dials or markings for greater visibility under water. It’s a happy color that reminds us of sunshine, daffodils, lemons, and the happy face emoji. Blue is the world’s favorite color. It is cooling and soothing Kwiat Cluster Necklace and Drop Earrings with Oval Sapphires.

and associated with wisdom and clarity. Soft blues are thought to calm the mind and aid concentration. Dark blue implies trust, dignity, intelligence, and authority. Bright blue signifies strength, dependability, and coolness. Blue is a dependable, looks-goodanywhere color that is all about peace and serenity. Green is a perennial favorite that has come to represent the very planet we share. It is the color of ecology and the environment, of green spaces, spring, regeneration, and fertility. It’s a lucky color to the Irish as well as many other cultures, and it represents renewal and energy. A green light means go! There are more shades of green than any other color, from the lime green of peridot to the deep rich garden green of emerald. Orange is the only color named after a fruit — or is the fruit named after the color? Either way, it is a vivid, bracing hue that can mean luxury in some shades and serve as a warning signal in others — think traffic cones and police vests. In nature, it shows up in sunsets, rainbows, fire, and flowers. It is the color of Halloween, Cheetos, and marmalade. It represents vitality, warmth, cheer, and adventure.

Kwiat Snake Ring with an Emerald and Diamonds in Platinum.

Pink has become a staple color in fashion and decor. Shades run the gamut from soft neutrals to vibrant neon style statements. Pink symbolizes blossoming love and the freshness of youth. It is the color of romance, warmth, affection, and tranquility. More soothing than stimulating, pink represents the feminine principle, reproduction, and the survival of the species.

Making lockets and charms cool again Monica Rich Kosann has made it her mission to create jewelry that is not only beautiful but also inspires and empowers the women who wear it. The collection, launched in 2003, was inspired by Kosann’s love of vintage photographs and accessories, most notably lockets discovered at antique shops and flea markets. The New York City-based jewelry designer, fine art photographer, and avid collector has been credited with making lockets cool again.

Enamored with the mystery behind vintage lockets, the people who wore them, and the secrets they held, Kosann celebrates this classic jewel as the ideal means of self-expression. She thinks of the locket as the “little black dress of fine jewelry,” something that should be in every woman’s jewelry box, because they work with any wardrobe. In addition to lockets, MRK creates charms that reflect collective themes women can embrace as expressions of their personal journeys and stories — themes like Carpe Diem and The Time is Now to I Think I Can and You Had The Power All Along My Dear, as inscribed on the Dorothy Medallion, launched last year. Of the Dorothy Medallion, Kosann shares, “We used it as a vehicle to ask women in our community to share the ending to the thought, ‘I had the power when…’ and they did in beautiful ways.” “The answers were poignant, moving, tearful, and celebratory, but in all instances empowering.”

Universal symbols like celestial beings inspire us to follow our dreams or tell someone we love them to the moon and back, which is why MRK’s My Sun, Moon, and Stars collection works so well. Crafted in 18k gold or sterling silver, MRK uses steel chains to represent the dark sky, twinkling with opals, moonstones, and diamonds, like a starry night. Kosann drew inspiration for the collection from an E.E. Cummings poem that ends with, “yours is the light by which my spirit’s born: yours is the darkness of my soul’s return — you are my sun, my moon, and all my stars.” Monica comments that “The last line has become such a universal, inspirational quote about adoration, love, and endearment. It tells a story of finding our paths in life and in love.” MRK is a Certified B Corporation, which means it meets the highest standards of social and environmental impact. Certification involves a rigorous assessment that must be renewed every three years. The brand works with ethically sourced natural diamonds and precious metals, including repurposed natural diamonds and recycled gold and silver. MRK also supports various giving initiatives through its MONICA CARES foundation and employee Volunteer Days.

“I have been painting quite a bit these days, and it has taught me to dig even deeper and look more carefully into the layers and amount of detail that goes into all sorts of art — this of course includes jewelry! I became entranced with agates when we visited one of our stone suppliers many years ago. All of the larger pieces of this stone were filled with thousands of layers, exposing details inside the actual stone that just never stopped giving. Agate is very well known to be a stone imbued with positive energy. It brings us stability, luck, positivity, and focus, healing any angst or anxiety we might have. It allows us to have positive mental energy, peace of mind.” ~Monica Rich Kosann

A new generation of Explorers and some out-of-this-world dials

Rolex, the world’s most collected watch, singles out certain models each year for updates, new designs, or improvements. It could be a new metal, a new dial treatment, or even a new movement. This year, the

Explorer

gets

some

special attention, with new materials and a new dial treatment.

The

Daytona

was endowed with an outof-this-world dial, and the Datejust is embellished with a subtle palm frond motif.

The Explorer has been enriched with a touch of gold this year with yellow Rolesor, a true Rolex signature combining 18k yellow gold and Oystersteel. A sparkling rim of gold also surrounds the numerals and hands. The dial has been given a rich, glossy lacquer finish, in keeping with the model’s climb into gold territory. The black color contrasts beautifully with the indexes and signature 3, 6, and 9 numerals, especially since they are now lit up with new and improved Chromalight, Rolex’s proprietary luminescent material. In dark conditions, the hands and hour markers glow a vibrant blue, and in daylight, they remain a bright white. The movement is also new for the Explorer. The caliber 3230 features Rolex’s signature Chronergy escapement with a blue Parachrom antimagnetic hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers and a power reserve of 70 hours.

The Rolex Explorer in 18k yellow gold and Oystersteel.

The new 42 mm Explorer II is all Oystersteel, a unique alloy that is particularly strong and corrosion resistant — perfect for an adventure watch like the Explorer II, which has the added function of a second time zone. It is indicated on a 24-hour display with an orange hour hand on the central dial. It contains the Rolex caliber 3285, which is new to this model. It features Rolex’s patented Chronergy escapement with a blue Parachrom anti-magnetic hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers and a power reserve of 70 hours. The Explorer was sized down a notch this year to 36 mm from 39 mm, but that takes it back to the beginning — the Explorer was 36 mm when it was first introduced in 1953. The Explorer II remains a robust 42 mm.

The Rolex Explorer II in Oystersteel, with optimized Chromalight display.

A new version of the Cosmograph Daytona is out of this world. It has a solid meteorite dial that adds a unique decorative touch to the watch with precious metal versions of the sporty model, including white gold, yellow gold, and Everose, Rolex’s proprietary rose gold. Rolex extends the special dial treatment to new models of the Datejust 36 with palm or fluted motifs. The new palm frond motif evokes lush, vibrant tropical forests, while the fluted pattern pays tribute to the grooves on Rolex’s signature fluted bezels. The new versions of the Datejust 36 are equipped with caliber 3235, with a precision rating of -2/+2 seconds per day. The Rolex Datejust, first launched in 1945, was the first selfwinding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial — viewed through the signature cyclops lens. The Datejust 36 is water resistant to 100 meters.

The 28 mm watch is 18k yellow gold, and it contains the caliber 2236, with a precision rating of -2/+2 seconds per day. ROADSTER 2022 The first supercar to set every performance record and still fit seating for four.

The second-generation Tesla Roadster, originally unveiled in 2017 and expected to enter the market in 2022, is the quickest car in the world, with record-setting acceleration, range, and performance. With SpaceX’s package it will go 0-60 mph in 1.1 seconds! WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN The Roadster will be a new addition to the Tesla lineup when it eventually enters production, resurrecting the nameplate worn by the company’s first model back in 2008. DESIGNED FOR PERFORMANCE AND AERO EFFICIENCY As an all-electric supercar, Roadster maximizes the potential of aerodynamic engineering — with record-setting performance and efficiency. GLASS ROOF A lightweight, removable glass roof stores in the trunk for an open-air, convertible driving experience.

For reference, if that 60-mph time holds up, it will mean the Roadster is a full second quicker than its key rival, the gasoline-powered McLaren 570S.

JUST PLAIN FAST In November 2017, Tesla revealed the second-generation Roadster. Plans were made for a 2021 release, but it’s now expected to arrive for the 2022 model year. The good news? Until then, you could visit one on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California. Tesla hasn’t been bringing out the new Roadster prototype often since the unveiling. This is understandable, considering the production version has been delayed several times. Tesla is not looking to promote it too soon or too much. But this past summer it was in the rare situation where anyone who wanted to buy a ticket for the Petersen Automotive Museum could go and see it. And now you can order it as well. There, next to the car, was an interesting plaque that reveals a startling zero-to-60 mile-per-hour time of 1.1 seconds, when equipped with the SpaceX package. Huh? Musk took to Twitter to confirm the revelation, saying that it’s possible with “the SpaceX rocket thruster option package.” In true James Bond fashion, the Roadster might have cold air thrusters, supplied by compressed air tanks, with the thrusters hidden behind the license plate that’ll help propel the all-wheel-drive sports car to cruising speeds. Without the package, Tesla claims the car should be able to hit 60 mph (96 kilometers per hour) in 1.9 seconds, still mind-blowing, to say the least.

Musk has made a lot of promises with the Roadster, claiming the car will offer 620 miles of range with its tri-motor configuration — one in the front and two in the back — that will power all four wheels. The power and range will come from a 250-kilowatt-hour battery. When Tesla revealed it in 2017, the company said the car would offer 7,375 pound-feet (10,000 Newton-meters) of torque and that it would hit 100 mph (160 kph) in 4.2 seconds, which is quicker than most cars to 60. It would complete the quarter-mile in 8.8 seconds. All that performance won’t be cheap, as the car will be capable of reaching speeds over 250 mph (402 kph). The base Roadster starts at $200,000 with the Founders Series car, of which only 1,000 will be made, costing $250,000 each. Tesla required $50,000 to reserve one, and it should be a stunning performance car when it arrives. Musk often remained vague about a new official timeline for the electric hypercar program, but he confirmed earlier this year that the engineering of the new Tesla Roadster will be completed this year in order to enter production in 2022. He even said that he expects Tesla to have a new drivable release candidate by the end of the summer and that version should end up being the production version available next year.

Designer Roberto Coin places a special focus on the neck this year, particularly with his medallion and locket collections, which are perfect options to layer with your existing collection. He has added diamonds for the first time, putting some extra sparkle into the mix, including with full pavé flowers in the beloved Love in Verona collection. There are also more sizes, including bigger lockets and smaller medallions, refining the look to more casual or bold styles. Roberto has also added even more chain looks this year, including the fashionable paper-clip link, and made them detachable and connectable anywhere along the length of the chain. This means any necklace can be worn as a pendant, Y-necklace, choker, or lariat, at any desired length. Chains are long or short, in single or multiple strands, with more options to choose from, including a slinky sautoir length — something to help ring in the Roaring Twenties. There are more than 1,700 different chain link styles in all.

Color is also key, particularly after the year we have all had. Roberto has added the intense blue glow of lapis lazuli to his collections for the first time, often combining it with diamond highlights. The beauty of banded malachite and bright turquoise also add a hit of color and vibrancy throughout his new pieces.

Earrings are an important part of any jewelry wardrobe this year, and Roberto has extended his huggie earring selection to include smaller, more casual styles. There is also a stunning pair of diamond line earrings that can be looped around to become a slack hoop for a completely different look.

Roberto Coin combines his technological prowess with time-honored craftsmanship to create the new Verona collection. The four-petaled fioral motif repeats in diamonds and in engraving, even reappearing in the gallery of each piece as a reminder of our inner beauty.

For the wrist, choose from bangles that resemble chain in the Obelisco collection, with cutouts in the shape of links or, at the other end of the spectrum, a new series of flexible, stretchy bracelets, with stretchy rings to match — the ultimate in one-size-fits-all comfort. The zipper necklace also makes strong showing this year. It debuted last year as an elaborate, all-diamond piece, and returns in smaller sizes, with or without diamonds, along with turquoise or lapis options. Throughout this year’s collections, Roberto’s familiar motifs shine through, including the pyramid shapes of the Obelisco line, the Venetian flower, and the Gothic-inspired quatrefoil. You will recognize familiar finishes, from satin to polished, indented, or engraved. And as always, the surprising, refreshing design flair of the one-of-a-kind Roberto Coin shines through.

SICILY J ewel o f t he M e di t e r r a n e a n

Everyone should visit Sicily at some point. From its rich history and dazzling landscapes, to its volcanic excitement and glorious food, it offers much, as Giovanni promised...and the trip to Stromboli to see the lava eruptions was just one of its highlights. The best times to visit are April to June or September to October. We unlocked just a few of its treasures, but you will find many more, and although the mafia might still be alive and kicking, they won’t get in the way of your enjoyment!

TOUCH DOWN

As we neared Taormina, with its breath-taking coastal scenery, our eyes glanced to the mountains. Mount Etna was easy to spot, but nearer to us, houses clung like limpets to other lofty pinnacles. Fancy living up there, we mused. The satellite navigation directed us away from the coast and onward to our first location. We knew Castelmola was set above the town, but we did not expect the narrow twisting road to finally arrive at that group of houses set high on that mountain top. The views from here were astonishing. From the apartment balcony, Mount Etna peeped between the houses opposite, and as we dined outside at a local restaurant later that evening, Taormina twinkled far below us in a clear night sky. We seemed so high that I doubt whether it would have appeared any different had we still been airborne!

ERUPTING STROMBOLI

Nothing quite prepares you for witnessing a real magma eruption from an active volcano, and when we rounded the Aeolian island of Stromboli in the early evening the following day to witness the brilliant scarlet larva tossed into the air in the dark sky, we were delighted. The day started early with an hour’s drive to Messina, followed by an hour’s boat trip to our first stop on the island of Panarea, with its white buildings clustered around a black sandy beach. Here, colorful fishing boats were drawn on shore after the early morning catch. Bars, restaurants, and cafés offered plenty of refreshment and time to sit and soak up the awesome view. We opted to take the opportunity to explore the island with the aid of a golf cart and driver for around 30 euros. After another hour back on board, we reached Stromboli. We stopped off the shore to witness the bubbles from underwater eruptions and smell the sulphur, before we cruised between giant islands of basalt thrust up during activity many years ago. We spent an hour ashore, and then as dusk fell, we boarded the boat again to sail round the island to witness the pulsating pyrotechnic display that Stromboli offers its visitors.

GODFATHER COUNTRY

For many, Sicily is synonymous with the Godfather trilogy created by Francis Ford Coppola, and his movies are immortalised in the places where filming took place. Savoca and the surrounding countryside is the number-one shrine to their memory. There are many tours on offer, but we hired a car to explore the Godfather trilogy ourselves. At the Bar Vitelli, we sat and drank a lemon granita. It was the location where Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) met Mr. Vitelli (the bar owner) and asked his permission to court his daughter, Apollonia. It was also the location for the official engagement and for the party after the wedding ceremony. Some of the interior was stuffed with memorabilia and images, and opposite, the view showed the Church of Santa Lucia, where the wedding between Michael Corleone and Apollonia took place. Next stop was Forza D’Agrò then back to Taormina, where we met our host for our Sicilian gourmet food and wine tour. F R E D R I C

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Here, our host was Alfredo. He was a great character. He had lived on Sicily all his life, and we learned so much about Sicily from him. Diners spilled out onto the pavements, musicians played, and friendly cats greeted us as we enjoyed countless regional dishes, which included cold meats and cheeses, swordfish, blue sardines, gratin mussels, and seafood risotto. We topped it off with five desserts and plenty of fine wines. I must admit, I was a little worried about the waistline! It is difficult to separate Sicily from its abundance of glorious food. Whether it was the fish and chips in Ortygia, where the fish came as a gourmet assortment in a small wooden box, to freshly made pizza cooked in traditional ovens. Every meal seemed to extol local ingredients and highlight one of the reasons why we love Italian cuisine so much. When visiting local restaurants where the menu was in Italian, we found a phone app which proved invaluable, as it translated the text when held above it 48

Should I venture into the realm of booze, the wine tastings and my enjoyment would fill a book, but when a good local wine is cheaper than a lemon soda, and when one suitcase on our return was filled with bottles...I say no more!

MOUNT ETNA

This is the largest active volcano in Europe, and one of the world’s most frequently erupting volcanoes. It is 10,900 feet (3,329 meters) tall, with a base circumference of about 93 miles (150 kilometres). On the southern side, cruise boats gorge thousands of visitors into a vast over-commercialized area to experience Etna. A cable car and a specialized vehicle take you toward the main crater, but I am sure these visitors miss so much. We explored on our own, due in part to bad visibility at a higher level. The landscape is eerie. Black dust is everywhere, and the giant black lava flows from past eruptions abound.

CONNECTING WITH HISTORY

We left Taormina for Syracuse, taking the coastal road, which took us through Catarina. Our location here was very central with views over the city. Its old, mellow, baroque architecture is shabby-chic but inside, sophisticated and elegant. It echoes with the feel of ancient civilizations — the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, and Aragones have all left their mark. The finest area today is Ortygia — Greek for “quail” — the tiny island on which the first Corinthians settled in 733 BC. It is an absolute gem, dense with a gorgeously crumbly feel but also beautifully restored Baroque buildings, boutique shops, and super restaurants, The following day it rained, but luckily, we were able to tour the great archaeological Park Neapolis before the heavens opened. The Roman Amphitheatre was enormous, and the Orecchio di Dionisio, a limestone cave shaped like a human ear into which we wandered, was also great. It twists like the inner ear, and the further we went the darker it became.

BUZZING PALERMO

A long early morning drive ensured we were on the steps of the opera house in Palermo at 10:30, where several tour groups were acting out a scene from the Godfather trilogy and dogs lay sleeping — they had seen it all before! You may have seen Marco with Rick Stein or Paul Hollywood, if you watch too many cooking shows. He was our guide on a five-hour street tour of Palermo. It is the best way to get a real feel for a place. We walked through old narrow walkways, where washing hung out to dry overhead and the bread boy delivered loaves by placing them in

baskets so that the women could haul them up to their balconies. Men pushed carts with chimneys, in which they roasted chestnuts, and the lottery man sold tickets for a box of fresh fish. All the while, we were stopping to try Palermo’s street food: entrails in buns, veal lungs in bread, fried chickpea paste, potato balls, and more. It sounds a little off-putting, but it was all served by Sicilians passionate about their food and was an experience not to be missed. The stop for masala wine was most welcome, and I enjoyed the fact that the tour included several of Palermo’s major sights.

THE CATACOMBS

After our day with Marco and an early morning visit to the city’s famous catacombs, we opted for the less-crowded road to Marsala and Trapani. An early morning start meant that we were at the catacombs before the full lighting was switched on! Very spooky, very interesting, with hundreds of dead bodies — no, make that 8,000 dead bodies. Within a short space of time, the lighting was fully switched on, but it still remained an eerie place. Arranged in categories, the bodies were surprisingly interesting.

SALT FLATS AND FLAMINGOS

The bright light reflected by the vast salt pans creates a feeling of space and a kind of serene quietness. The sun shone, and the crystals sparkled in the sun light. Standing proud from the flat white landscape, old windmills and mountains of salt reared up. We climbed one of these windmills to get another perspective. In the afternoon we took a boat out onto the shallow lagoon to visit the ancient remains on a number of off-shore islands. There were flamingos, spoonbills, and black heron. A great way to relax before our journey home. F R E D R I C

For more than 114 years, Kwiat has been renowned for its diamonds of exceptional quality and brilliance, along with its exquisite proprietary cuts. Kwiat is the exclusive distributor of the ASHOKA® diamond in North America. This spectacular trademarked cut has an arrangement of 62 facets, making it as distinctive as it is dazzling. ASHOKA® diamonds appear up to two color grades higher than their GIA grading report, as well as 30-50 percent larger than diamonds of the same carat weight. “It’s like an emerald cut but more elongated and with more facets. There’s really nothing like it,” says Gary Rubel. “Our bridal customers also love the exclusive Kwiat Cushion, which is part of our larger selection of engagment rings from Kwiat.” The company has also created other special proprietary cuts, including the Kwiat Tiara®, which we think is the most beautifully cut diamond in the world. Kwiat selects only the finest rough diamond crystals, with exceptional luster and free of imperfections. Each stone is cut to keep the carat weight in the right places, with the widest possible diameter, making it appear larger than other diamonds of comparable carat weight. Because of its superior cut — with precise angles and proportions, perfect symmetry and polish, and meticulous faceting placement — Kwiat Tiara diamonds appear whiter than their GIA color grade.

We welcome you to visit and experience our new Kwiat shop-in-shop with a glass of champagne, an espresso or the Tiara Cut Gimlet — a special Kwiat cocktail with gin, lime and ginger cordial — and of course, an assortment of beautiful diamond jewelry.

KWIAT ENGAGEMENT RINGS

CUSHION CUT DIAMONDS A Classic Cut Refined Since it was first developed in the eighteenth century, diamond lovers have adored the cushion cut — a pillow-shaped stone with romantic appeal. The earliest examples, known as the “old mine cut,” are hard to find — and tend to be irregular in shape. By the twentieth century, diamond cutters had evolved and refined the cushion with more facets. At Kwiat, our standards for a beautiful cushion are so specific that we developed a proprietary diamond cut. The Kwiat Cushion has an elegant, elongated silhouette, with a perfect outline, beveled edges, and rounded corners. It is a true brilliant cut with more sparkle and fire — and without the “crushed ice” look of a modified cut. And, unlike most cushions, it looks bigger than a round brilliant diamond of the same weight.
