Warmest personal greetings, We understand that celebrating milestones in our lives can be very emotional and memorable. We are in the celebration business. Each year we are privileged to share milestones with you, our customers and friends. We get to share in the engagement of a young couple, the birth of a child and the birthdays and anniversaries that will follow. This year we would like to share our milestone with you — the 90th anniversary of our family jewelry business. When our grandparents started their jewelry business in October, 1928, they probably were not thinking of building a legacy of three generations that would survive the Great Depression and World War II and witness the lunar landing and countless other memorable events. We have also seen the changes in the way people purchase fine jewelry. We have not only survived but thrived, in large part because of the loyalty, trust, and friendship of you, our clients. In this, our seventh edition of Fredric Rubel Magazine, we have a special feature celebrating engagements and weddings of young couples that we have had the pleasure to meet and guide through the process of starting their own milestone celebrations. If you have been to our Mission Viejo location, you have surely had the pleasure to meet and hopefully work with Valerie Wilshire. Val is an exceptional person who has helped hundreds of clients celebrate special moments. This past year, Valerie celebrated thirty years with Fredric Rubel Jewelers. We hope that all of you continue to enjoy life’s special milestones and wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday and New Year With Gratitude, Fredric, David, and Gary Rubel

Valerie Wilshire FREDRIC H. RUBEL’S JEWELRY BUYER EXTRAORDINAIRE HAS
BEEN CHOOSING THE PERFECT PIECES FOR FREDRIC H. RUBEL CUSTOMERS FOR 31 YEARS
I
n 1987, a longtime family friend did us a great service by recommending Valerie Wilshire to Fredric H. Rubel Jewelers. When my father, Fred, interviewed Valerie, who was twenty-three years old at the time, she
said she was interested in being a buyer. That’s kind of a funny story, because in 2012, Gary and I asked her to do the buying, and she is the best buyer we’ve ever had! Obviously better late than never. Valerie started out on the sales floor and was a quick study. She immediately began to develop a very loyal client following. She has a very helpful and unassuming presence that makes her customers feel comfortable. Most would say the jewelry buying experience with Valerie is exceptional. She has an incredible memory and is a really good listener. A few years ago my brother Gary and I were getting a little tired of the jewelry shows and the pressure of merchandising and buying for each store. Gary suggested we

bring Valerie with us to the Couture Show in 2012. Right from the start, we knew that we had made a great choice. We could see Val making purchasing decisions based on what she thought all our clients would like. She has such a great memory that she could catalog in her head all the different pieces of jewelry that so many of our customers would be excited about. It is incredible! When it was just Gary and me doing the buying, we would receive merchandise from the various vendors, once we got back from the trade shows, and say to ourselves, “why did we buy that?” Not Valerie; she has all the items committed to memory — where each piece goes, to what store, and even how to merchandise the pieces within the showcases! Valerie is one of the most thoughtful and generous people I have ever met. She is always putting others first. She told me once that when she was pregnant with her third child, Jillian, about twenty years ago, she had a

client who could not come to the store to pick up a gift he had purchased for his wife for an important occasion. Valerie agreed to meet the client on the side of the road near his home. What she didn’t tell the customer was that she was low on gas, and when they met, her tank was actually empty! She was embarrassed to tell him and waited for him to leave before she called her husband to come get her. All in the line of duty, I guess. During Valerie’s thirty-one years of employment with us, she has seen many physical changes to the business. She has worked in three different locations since starting out at our original store in San Bernardino. Valerie worked at our store location in Riverside (1991-2001) and finally at Mission Viejo (1999-present). While she has seen the merchandise mix change over the years, she still gets to sell beautifully made jewelry. What has not changed is the exceptional jewelry buying experience all of Valerie’s customers receive every time they interact with her. From left to right: Valerie with her niece, Ava, husband Joe, son Stuart and his girlfriend, Britt, son Brett and daughter Jillian.

The bangle stack is another trend that has become a classic, a look that Penny helped establish. Bangles have long been her specialty, and this year she has brought us more new styles than ever, with new watercolor mixes, delicate diamond bangles, multi-station bead and diamond bangles, and bezel styles with new colors, including moonstone, ruby, and sapphire. Lariats are making a major comeback, and Penny interprets the look with a new multifunction necklace. Her lariat necklaces can be worn in several ways — as a choker, down the back, in a long twist, or as a traditional lariat. Some have stations of gems, including pearls, South Sea pearls, diamond rondelles, and moonstones. Moonstones are, in fact, one of Penny’s favorite gems, and they figure prominently in her collections this year, for which she hand selected each of the stones for her Man in the Moon collection at the gem fair in Tucson, including new fancy cut moonstones. Look for hexagons, rounds, baguette, and other shapes mixed with stars and moons for a playful, wearable look. Penny is always inspired by the cosmos, and this year she has created her own version of the starburst trend. Her large half-star pieces were showstoppers at the Couture jewelry show in the spring. They mix perfectly with her new cuff bracelets with multi-point stars and moons. The crowning piece of the collection is a cluster starburst collar necklace that will make you want to walk the red carpet.

DAVID YURMAN SEA SENSATIONS
D
avid and Sybil Yurman, both fine artists, have been collaborating together since 1969,
creating beautiful jewelry that has always been inspired by the beauty that surrounds them. “Everything we design is a reflection of our experiences in life,” says Sybil, who was inspired by a long-ago vacation to create the new Tides collection. The diamond-encrusted designs capture her memories of peaceful ease and solitude during a time on Formentera, an island near Ibiza off the southern coast of Spain. “The collection has the vibrancy of the sun, the sea, and the island,” says Sybil. The ripples of polished sterling silver or 18k gold that characterize the Tides collection are designed to emulate the ebb and flow of ocean tides. They are engineered to undulate with fluid movement reminiscent of the cycles of the sea, creating a meditative moment. Sterling silver hand set with diamonds evokes the luminescence of a moonlit walk along the shore. “There’s something about the warmth of the sea and sun, the ease of floating in the water. It was one of the most relaxing times in my life.” Sybil found herself in Formentera in the 1960s, when she decided to leave California to visit friends in London. After a month or two, she took a job as a junior stylist for British photographer David Bailey, a defining force in the era’s Swinging London scene. After a shoot one

day with the iconic model Twiggy, one of the hairstylists asked Sybil if she wanted to join them on a trip to Spain. Wanting to experience something new, Sybil agreed, and got a haircut along the way. First, they visited Ibiza, and Sybil remembers not only the breathtaking Mediterranean vistas but also the riotous party scene. “It was about dancing and abandonment,” she says. “No one wore tops and everyone was beautiful. I enjoyed living there, but eventually wanted to get away from it all.” That’s when she ventured to Formentera. “I had no idea where I was going, so I and one other person got off the bus at Sant Francesc, thinking it was a town.” The sleepy village had nothing beyond a café and a grocery store. “We both went into the grocery store, and it had only an onion, some rice and a can of sardines. He took the onion and I took the sardines.” After reaching for the same bag of rice, Sybil introduced herself to the other passenger, a Dutch film-and-music critic. She proposed making dinner together, and they became friends. At night, Sybil wandered the island by moonlight, taking in the elemental

beauty of Formentera. “It was just sky, water, pine trees, and rocks.” During the day, she would “have lunch at a little shack on the beach and then just lie in the water as the tides gently moved in and out.” The Tides collection is proof that warm memories provide the best inspiration — a reminder of life’s greatest moments.

season. Morganite is a big favorite, particularly for cocktail rings and pendants, because it is generally found in large sizes. The gems are also very clean (inclusion free), and they are hard enough to withstand a few knocks. The light pink color is consistent and fairly saturated and can be found with orange or violet overtones. Morganite, also known as pink beryl, was named after banker and

THE MAGIC OF

Painter Henri Matisse famously said, “With color, one obtains an energy that seems to stem from witchcraft.” Indeed, color seems to cast a magic spell over everything it touches. In jewelry, it has the power to transform a simple piece into a masterpiece or add just the right finishing touch to an otherwise subdued palette.
GEMSTONES ADD LIFE, ENERGY, AND THE PERFECT FINISHING TOUCH TO EVERYTHING
Gemstones of any color are hot right now in jewelry design, partly because stacking and layering is such a big trend. The art of mixing and matching gemstones, metal finishes, textures, and sizes just wouldn’t be possible without the endless variety of colored gemstones. The look is inherently busy, since the idea is to continuously create unique and ever-changing combinations of color, texture, and scale. Colored gemstones are also the best way to add drama to a cocktail ring and give big earrings the pop they deserve. A particular color of gemstone is also frequently the defining feature of a signature style. It can help define your personality.

Yellow diamonds continue to be a fan favorite. Especially in large carat weights, yellow diamonds make powerful statements, and many favor them as an interesting alternative to a white diamond. RAINBOWS Pink tourmaline and pink sapphire are also mainstays of the jewelry palette, and this year they combine with other light colored gems in a combination that is being touted as rainbow — also called sunset or watercolor combinations. The rainbow palette is symbolic in several ways. Nature’s rainbow is the product of both sunshine and rain, both of which are necessary for a healthy life balance. The rainbow is also the chosen motif of the LGBTQ community, representing pride in diversity. It is a celebration of everyone’s uniqueness and symbolizes the spirit of coexistence, cooperation, and tolerance.

PERFORMANCE
DYNASTY THE NEW ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE
Vantage. An evocative name for a magnificent bloodline of thoroughbred sports cars. The Vantage nameplate has been worn by some true icons. First used in 1951 on a high-output engine option for the DB2, Vantage was quickly established as a model in its own right. Highlights include the William Townsdesigned V8 Vantage, spectacular twin-supercharged V600 Le Mans, and the much-loved V8 Vantage. Today this formidable sporting dynasty is poised to hit new heights with the introduction of the new Vantage. Pure, sculptural forms create an athletic, predatory stance, while the minimal front and rear overhangs, muscular flanks, and broad haunches express the agility and dynamism inherent within the car. New head- and tail-lights form dramatic new signatures giving the Vantage unmistakable road presence.

AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE IS CENTRAL TO THE VANTAGE DESIGN CONCEPT Aerodynamic performance is central to the Vantage design concept: the front splitter directs airflow underneath the car, where a system of fences channels cooling air where it is needed, and also ensures the rear diffuser is fed with clean airflow. The design of the diffuser creates an area of low pressure air while simultaneously preventing turbulence generated by the rear wheels from disrupting the flow of air exiting centrally from beneath the rear of the car. Together with the new side gills, which have been integrated into the body surface and bleed air pressure out from the front wheel arches, and the pronounced upswept rear deck lid, the Vantage generates a significant level of downforce — a rarity on any production car. The design story continues inside the Vantage, with a dynamic and focused sports car cockpit that rejects long fluid curves in favour of sharp focused lines denoting the more aggressive nature of the car. A high waist interior theme and lower driving position creates a more immersive driving experience and contributes to significant gains in occupant space and significant improvement in headroom compared with the outgoing Vantage. A combination of rotary and toggle style controls have been used for their tactile and intuitive functionality. The heart of the Vantage is Aston Martin’s potent new alloy 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. Set low and as far back in the chassis as possible for optimal center of gravity and perfect 50:50 weight distribution, this high performance, high efficiency engine returns a CO2 figure of *245g/km yet develops 510PS at 6000rpm and 685Nm from 20005000rpm. The Vantage deploys its impressive power and torque to the rear wheels via a rear-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 3.5 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 195mph. Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Andy Palmer notes: “It speaks volumes for the outgoing Vantage that it is the single most successful model in Aston Martin’s history. Creating a worthy successor has been a challenge to relish and a huge source of motivation. I’m enormously excited by what we’ve created.”

here are so many beautiful trends in fine jewelry this year, from long drop earrings

make a bold statement. But sometimes a bold statement is not what is called for. Sometimes just the basics will do — the foundational classics that demonstrate you have good taste and plenty of style, no matter where you are or what the occasion. The great thing about the classics is that they can be updated periodically, becoming classics-with-a-twist — a strand of pearls with a few gemstones added or a stud earring with a small drop or jacket — and they still never go out of style. Here are few of this year’s must-have modern classics.

EARRINGS Earrings at their most basic are diamond or pearl studs, and what could be more elegant? Some designers add small drops or jackets, but the classic stud is the essential ingredient. This year, classic doorknockers are back in style in a range of sizes, and, of course, hoops are a favorite standby. This year, they are set with gems that hang on loops or chains from the hoop. Hoops are also being set with diamonds on the inner side as well as the outer, so the sparkle of gems shows from every angle.

NECKLACES The diamond solitaire necklace (DSN, for short) somehow offers a big look, despite its diminutive size. It’s the perfect finishing touch for virtually any outfit, from the beach to the ballroom. For a bigger bang, the classic riviera necklace, with its long string of not-sosolitaire diamonds, is as elegant as it gets. For a less glittering look, stations of diamonds, or diamonds-by-the-yard as they are sometimes called, are a nice alternative to the riviera. Moonstone station necklace by Penny Preville.

MONICA RICH KOSANN CAPTURING MEMORIES AND MOMENTS
T
he idea that every woman has a story to tell drives artist Monica Rich Kosann to create
lockets, charms, and other jewels that are destined to become heirlooms. “I like to think that my collection offers my customers heirlooms for our generation while maintaining an enduring sense of fashion and timeless style,” says the NYC designer. “Living and cherishing stories in our lives is universal to us all.” Kosann began her career as a fine art portrait photographer using black and white film and darkroom techniques that are now unique in our digital age. The personal nature and heirloom quality of her portraits informed her interest in jewelry design, and along the way, she began creating lockets and charms to hold special photographs and personal messages. Her unique perspective has made for lockets that are cool, sexy, and contemporary for a new generation. “I believe that a locket captures a moment unique to each of us and, like a fingerprint, is totally unique to that woman.” The brand’s latest innovation, the Locket Bar, is an in-store and digital experience that allows customers to print photos from their smart device onto a locket.

him in his daily life and on his many travels — among them are Venetian architecture, his flower garden, the Golden Gate bridge, and a host of adorable animals and flying creatures. This year, his source of inspiration has affected not only his designs but his process. Roberto came across a kind of rapier loom made in the 1920s or ’30s that was refurbished and reinforced in the ’50s and used to make mesh fabrics used in the textile industry. Of course, this sparked an idea in his fertile imagination. He altered the machine slightly to accommodate gold wires and began producing sheets of woven gold for his new bracelets in the Primavera collection. The sheets of gold mesh that come off the

Reversable Princess Flower necklace with white and black diamonds set in 18k rose gold. $4750
As a designer, Roberto Coin is notoriously prolific. He is in love with renewal and creates about 600 new pieces a year. Some of the new pieces are featured here, including some bold new additions to the new Roman Barocco collection in starburst designs set with amethyst cabochons, an important gemstone color this year that tops the list of Pantone Color Institute’s colors for 2018. The new pendants and earrings are made of 18k rose gold in a twisted gold pattern. Turquoise is another hot gemstone this year, and earrings and rings in the Petals collection have been lavished with long, marquis-shaped turquoise gemstones. Malachite is another current favorite, adding lush tones to the Sauvage PrivÊ and Colored Treasures collections, while the Princess Flower collection now features pearls, the eternally romantic gem. Transformable jewelry is an important trend right now, and the new Cento earrings are a perfect example of how this concept works. The star studs on the upper portion of the earrings can be

Long line earrings are also one of the hottest looks in jewelry, and Roberto’s personal interpretation shines through in the Princess Flower earrings, which are made up of four rows of the four-petaled flower motif that is signature to the collection. The look of stacking bracelets is hotter than ever, and this year, wider bangles are increasingly being added to the mix. The Pois Three stone Cento Dolce ring in 18k rose gold.
Moi Luna collection of bangles in different sizes perfectly epitomizes the look, with polished gold and glittering diamond-set pieces adding variety. There are new wideband rings to match. Roberto Coin has remained true to the goal he set for himself when he started his collection in 1996. “It was clear to me from the beginning that this brand would represent diversity,” he says, “and I knew that it was exactly this diversity that would become the fundamental

Jack Kelége has been creating wonderful works of art throughout his life and has become one of the premier jewelers of our time. His relentless pursuit of quality and perfection in every piece sets him apart from everyone else. Here, in his own words, are a few insights into his process. When did you know you wanted to become a jewelry designer? Was there a defining point in your career that shaped your aesthetic? My father and grandfather were jewelers, so I’ve been interested in designing from a very young age. I learned everything about the craft from them. There hasn’t been a single defining point that has shaped my aesthetic; it has slowly evolved as I’ve learned more over time. Describe your creative process. The creative process is organic and different from piece to piece. Sometimes I find a beautiful diamond and use the setting to accentuate the beauty of the stone. Other times, I’m inspired by something I see in nature and move forward from there.
Platinum and diamond engagement ring by Jack Kelege. $11,500 Center diamond sold separately.
JACK
You started your collection with engagement rings and now have an extensive fashion jewelry collection. Which do you like designing more? I enjoy making both for different reasons, but I appreciate the freedom that comes in making a fashion piece. Creating an engagement ring has specific conventions and restrictions that don’t apply when I’m designing a piece of fashion jewelry.

Do you have a favorite jewelry trend? I’m a fan of classic American platinum and diamond jewelry from the mid 1920s through the early 1960s. The creativity and quality of jewelry produced in that period was amazing. Is there a new collection or special piece you would like to share with us? Our new earrings, KGE 218, stand out for me. The technical challenges in setting and assembling the two-tone gold and diamond earrings make them something special. You have been a jeweler for over 40 years, how has your style evolved over time, and how do your pieces stay fresh? Over time, my style has evolved in many ways, but it’s always been a priority for me to create jewelry that will remain timeless. Where do you go to recharge and get inspired to create new collections and pieces? My inspiration comes from different places, sometimes from nature, sometimes from classic art and architecture. There’s a beauty in simplicity that I’ve always made a

central focus in my designs. What is your favorite part of your day? I enjoy mornings, coming into the studio feeling rejuvenated and ready to start a new day. If you could change one thing about your career to date, what would it be? I wouldn’t change a thing in my career. I feel blessed. What would say is the one word to describe Jack Kelége? Quality.
