On any given day at SJMA, you will find visitors engaged in lively conversations about the works on view; families gathered around the hands-on learning stations in the galleries; couples on a date watching interviews with artists on an iPod Touch; and people talking with SJMA’s helpful gallery representatives, who speak some six languages among them! SJMA prides itself on its commitment to making the experience of this museum unlike your stereotypical, old-time hushed museum visit. The Museum’s commitment to being welcoming and to engaging your creative thinking—whether you are an experienced art lover or a first-time visitor—sets SJMA apart.

Part of the allure of modern and contemporary art is the expectation of the unexpected. New art brings with it new ideas. It brings us the chance to propel our imaginations in new directions; it may challenge us to grapple with the myriad complexities of today’s world. And at SJMA, you can also see exciting new work by West Coast artists that reveals the diverse cultures, bold experimentation, and remarkable willingness winnovation that make this place so special. We hope you will come to SJMA with a mindset that is similarly curious and creative. We also hope you will use this new website to learn more about everything happening at SJMA. If you have comments on the site, please let us know. We love to hear from you!

Museum will connect art and life; work across cultural boundaries; and promote deeper awareness, enjoyment, and knowledge of modern and contemporary art, architecture, and design. SJMA will be a cultural hub for the residents of the region, a space for personal reflection, a gathering place for creative thinkers, and a source of vibrancy for the city center.

HISTORY Message from Director Mission and Values History Real
In 1969—during an era of peace, love, and tie-dye culture—a small group of San Jose citizens gathered together to transform the beautiful old library (threatened with demolition) into a fledgling art gallery. The democratic, grassroots spirit of this community movement has forever shaped the character of the San Jose Museum of Art, which remains dedicated to inclusivity, new thinking, and visionary ideals. In contrast to older museums often founded upon the riches of a few patrons, the soul of the SJMA reflects the hard work and civic pride of multitudes of supporters and volunteers over the years—of its public. From the days of flower power to the dawn of the digital world, SJMA has continued to evolve with the times. In 1991, a handsome new wing was added to the landmark 19th-century building, making way for a growing permanent art collection, impressive international exhibitions, and an ambitious mission that bridges tradition and innovation. SJMA offers experiences that delight and engage visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Here, art nurtures life: it is a vision that connects minds and hearts.

New Stories from the Edge of Asia: Plastic Life This exhibition is the first in a new series that features recent work by artists from Pacific Rim countries and cultures who explore new narrative territory using animation, digital techniques, video, and film. Plastic Life looks at the ways artists weave the past and the present; the local and the universal; the ancient and the futuristic. Included are the works by Japanese-American artist Bruce Yonemoto, who lives in Los Angeles; Goangming Yuan, from Taiwan; Korean-born Hye Rim Lee, who lives in New Zealand; as well as exciting emerging artists. A young prodigy of stop-action animation, Takeuchi received a BFA in visual communication design from the Kyushu Institute of Design and an MFA in imaging arts and science from the Musashino Art University in Japan. His stop-action animation, A Wolf Loves Pork, is a collage of sorts, created from thousands of individual still photographs. The cartoon-like chase begins on the desk in a young man’s bedroom in a typical apartment building in Tokyo, when the predator spots his prey--a paper-mâché pig—and pursues the creature through the building and out into a city park, finally culminating in a showdown at water’s edge.

Wayne Thiebaud: Seventy Years of painting Wayne Thiebaud’s lushly painted glimpses of everyday life—from a slice of pie to a steep San Francisco streetscape—are icons of American Pop Art. This exhibition spans the course of his prolific career, from the early paintings he made as a young student to the vibrant beach scenes on which Thiebaud, now 89, has been working most recently. The exhibition features many of Thiebaud’s most popular images and includes favorites from his personal holdings. Nearly a third of the works date from the last decade. Wayne Thiebaud is a tribute to this Bay Area master and the inspiring momentum of his life as a painter.

Our galleries support quiet contemplation, but the Museum thrives as a place of vibrant exchange. We hope you’ll take advantage of SJMA adult education programs as ways to explore the art of our time. We offer guided tours, on-site activities, artist interviews, and reading areas within the exhibitions. We also provide the ever-popular (and free) Art Packs—bags filled with engaging in-gallery activities, such as games that invite you to determine which works you do (and don’t) like and which you think were hardest (or easiest) to make, as well as guided opportunities to turn your art viewing into art-making by writing poems or sketching. And don’t forget to listen to your free iPod Touch Gallery Tour, which we always offer with the price of admission.
