TOP PERFORMANCE FOR GLULAM

PASSION FOR WOOD

TOP PERFORMANCE WITH GLULAM Architectural visions combined with ecologolical awareness. Systematic advantages connected with economic reasoning. Builders all over Europe are increasingly requesting glulam as a new and innovative building component. Its demand is constantly on the rise, which in return also increases the need for higher quality standards. Nordlam meets these challenges their own way: with performance. Or, more precisely, with high quality work in the shortest time possible. The requirements needed for this are there: from a perfect location over state-of-theart technologies to passionate employees, who are available 24 hours a day and know their timber better than anyone else.

QUALITY EX WORKS The Nordlam production plantsare setting new standards internationally in terms of capacity and quality. Their favourable transport connection guarantees the highest flexibility for deliveries all over the world. The company ensures an almost permanent availability of standard goods as well as on-time and reliable deliveries of commission goods within the shortest possible time frame. The strictest selection criteria for timber, laser-controlled scanning technology as well as machine sorting and processing all provide for constant, beautiful surfaces. And the best is: Glulam by nature satisfies the often heard demand of “faster, higher, further“. It is easy to use, has an 80 % higher bearing capacity compared to common construction timber, and its basic material wood will constantly grow again. In addition to that, 1 m3 of spruce wood absorbs 0.7 tons of CO2, which effectively reduces environmental pollution even more.

3

SUPERIOR BUILDING COMPONENT GLULAM

Despite the increasing demand for timber constructions, the forest stand has been gradually growing since the 20th century. Thus, there is no need to worry about the renewable resource.

Glulam is an industrially manufactured product for supporting structures, which has higher bearing capacities than common construction timber by up to 80 %. During the manufacturing process, individual, thin and artificially dried boards are layered and glued. The finished product can be both straight and curved beams. Due to its construction, glulam is a very stable building component hardly susceptible to cracking; building components made of glulam meet the requirements of construction regulations and are subject to a regular quality control according to EN 14080 for supporting timber components. Glulam is particularly suitable for highly stressed and widely strained components with high demands on shape stability and visual attractiveness. Ecology Now more than ever, environmental protection is in the public focus. One of the most efficient methods of meeting this demand in the construction sector is to use glulam. It is both an ecological and renewable resource whose processing, compared to other materials, affects the environment only to a limited extent. Quite the contrary: The use of timber promotes forestation and, therefore, supports the regeneration of forests, which is essential for

4

the conservation of the forest ecosystem. In the end it is the forests which ensure oxygen production and, consequently, the basis for life in general. Did you know that one tree extracts 0.7 tons of CO2 per 1 m3 wood? Fire resistance Despite the fact that it consists of flammable material, glulam has an extraordinary fire resistance. Since it has no cracks, it carbonises evenly, creating a protective film which slows down the flame propagation towards the inside. While burning does cause a reduction of the material, it does not, however, diminish its mechanic characteristics. In contrast to other materials, wood will not yield abruptly, meaning that the building will collapse slowly and gradually.

Earthquake resistance In addition to its stability in terms of structure and dimensions, glulam is characterised by a high earthquake resistance. As a matter of fact, the material is five times lighter than reinforced concrete and fifteen times lighter than steel. On account of its low specific weight and extraordinary mechanic resistance, the effects of earthquakes will be reduced considerably.

CERTIFICATES AND OTHER QUALITY CHECKS When it comes to quality control, we do not only rely on the required external monitoring on the part of the testing institutes. The assiduous and all important work of our employees in every single step of the process is of utmost significance. Besides the compliance with aesthetic aspects, the structural demands on the product will be monitored and checked in various points, starting with the sorting of the timber up to the final manufacturing.

Nordlam possesses the gluing certificate type “A” according to DIN 1052-1 as well as the declaration of conformity with ÖNORM EN 386. Since 2007, Nordlam has been entitled to apply its products with the CE-sign according to EN 14080 and, therefore, is also entitled to produce the strength classes GL24h, GL28c/h, GL32c/h as well as the highest strength class GL36c.

MAN AND MACHINE IN UNIQUE SYMBIOSIS When you visit the Nordlam premises, you are immediately greeted by a scent of wood which brings to life the old traditions of the Nordic countries. It is a tradition which is very much alive, with its most outstanding value being the respect towards the environment and nature. It is also a value which is absorbed by our employees who demonstrate it day after day with their passion, commitment and sense of responsibility.

From this perfect combination of human intelligence and machine power, products will emerge, which convince not only by their inner, but also by their outer values: standard glulam products which, both technically and optically, will meet the highest quality standards. The unique Nordlam quality is ensured by material-sparing processing, multiple automatic control mechanisms and consistent monitoring.

Facts • Having an output of about 260.000 m3 , Nordlam is Europe’s best performing glulam manufacturer. • Until now, 1.3 million cubic metres of glulam have left the Nordlam premises. If you were to lay out ceiling components featuring a strength of 80 mm instead of turf, this would result in almost 4.000 football pitches!

In times of constantly changing market requirements and customer needs, a flexible and dynamic staff is more than essential for the enterprise’s success.

8

Guarantee Glulam supports, beams and frames for both industrial and private constructions possess statically better properties than those of the respective solid wood. Professionally applied and surfacetreated, Nordlam glulam beams will last longer than life.

INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE THROUGH BEST LOCATION The location Choosing Magdeburg for the Nordlam location was essentially inspired by the close proximity to the resource wood. The Nordic countries are the most important supply markets for the enterprise, since Nordic spruce is the primary wood used for producing high-quality glulam.

Powerful logistics Another crucial strategic aspect is the central location in the heart of Europe. This enables the quick connection to the international motorway network – Magdeburg is an important junction for the East-West as well as the North-South connection. One significant advantage for cost- and time-saving is having two own railway sidings to the railway network and direct access to the Elbe Lateral Canal. For the time being, 22 countries in Europe, Asia and America are supplied via these transport ways.

Duolam The softwood beams consist of two individual wood pieces with the same cross section, which are glued together with the grain running parallel. They are also suitable for the production of large or particularly stable cross sections. Application Duo beams are suitable for all applications that require building components with a high level of structural stability, which is especially important for the construction of air-tight buildings such as for timber frame constructions or for extended roof structures. The advantages become apparent in particular with visually ambitious designs that have to meet high architectural and aesthetic demands. The use of duolam is especially suited when there is no preventive wood preservative being applied beforehand. Duo/trio beams

may be used for both inside areas and roofed outside areas (service class 1 and 2 according to DIN 1052). Just as with normal solid wood, extreme climatic changes should be avoided, which, for example, could arise by means of direct exposure to weathering. Duo beams are suitable for building components exposed to aggressive chemicals. GLULAM JOINING AND IMPREGNATION The Nordlam portfolio is completed by extensive joining options. Under appropriate conditions, engineers such as specialised carpenters offer a professional joining. Your advantages are obvious. Referring to only one contact person, you have combined the whole range of glulam standard, commission and joining in one service package. Here, it is always useful to be able to resort to existing drawings. If data is available as “bvn”-files, it can automatically be imported into the Hundegger program, and then be arranged in a modular system for you. Additionally, we can also apply a surface coating – according to your wishes and with prior consultation about colour and product. As for traditional manual joining, the carpenter nowadays has to ask himself, if he can carry out the orders fast enough as well as cost-efficiently with this method. Of course, there were good reasons to stick to the “joining craft”. However, times have changed, and today’s price level alone is reason enough to use the advantages of fully automated, computer-assisted joining. Cost-efficiency becomes more and more important when carrying out the orders at the worksite. Advantages and disadvantages of the calculation are mostly to be seen on-site. Therefore it is increasingly profitable to raise the level of pre-manufacturing. This is to the benefit of both the craftsman and the builder.

Impregnation In order to prevent unnecessary moisturisation and ensure the improvement of cleanability, it could be required to attach a temporary weathering protection to the cross-sectional area of the wood. An impregnation is also possible for optical reasons, using the relevant colours. The classification according to hazard classes can be seen in the following chart. Hazard by means of Hazard class

HISTORY Since the 1930s, Rothensee, a Magdeburg suburb, had been home of to large gasworks which supplied the city with gas until it was bombed in the Second World War. It was rebuilt during the GDR era, but only operated until the German reunification. In 2001, work began on restoring the premises, and the construction of the new glulam factory started. Today, the area comprises about 18 ha in total and shines with a fresh and new appearance.

PASSION FOR WOOD The Rubner family-managed Group is today one of the main European companies operating in the field of wood constructions. The company management, by now the third generation, has successfully realised their futuristic vision in the field of wood constructions and the evolutionary path has always been characterised by continuous growth and constant internationalisation. In all these years, the creed of the Group, PASSION FOR WOOD, has never failed. This same passion today still inspires the owner family represented by Stefan, Peter, Joachim and Alfred Rubner. Under the direction of Stefan Rubner, President of Rubner Holding, the Rubner Group today manages a business subdivided into five strategic sectors: wood industry, wood structures, large turn-key projects, wood homes and wood doors.Just as in an orchestra, the individual companies integrate in the Group to form a single great unit and fully develop their potentiality. The harmonious exchange between the various company sectors has allowed Rubner to reach the highest performance and to penetrate the market, becoming the specialist in the field of made-to-measure buildings in wood. The vertically integrated Rubner production range covers all

the processes and operation phases, from raw materials to finished products. The individual companies, part of the Group, each bring a wide range of experience and know-how, and their products satisfy the strictest quality requisites. These products range from sawn wood to pillar layer frame glue laminated, from panels in solid wood to glulam components or complex glulam structures, to doors and windows and homes and to large turn-key projects, all manufactured by the Group with full respect for environmental sustainability and with advanced technical methods, so as to give life to customised projects and solutions. The Rubner Group is based in Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Slovenia, France and Poland, with more than 1,500 staff, whose daily commitment to the valorisation of wood contributes to intensifying the importance of this natural and renewable raw material. Rubner creates comfortable living environments, but at the same time contributes, ever since company foundation more than 80 years ago, to the rational use of natural resources.
