ENG202 ENG 202 ENG/202 WEEK 5 FINAL PAPER  D O W N LOA D H E R E The Final Essay is the major assignment of the course. Assignments each week will lead up to the final completion of this essay. You are encouraged to make use of the many resources offered to you by Ashford. Use the Library section of the course to access JSTOR and ProQuest for reputable academic sources, and the Ashford Writing Center for free help with editing, thesis generation, and other helpful writing resources. This is a literary essay and must, above all else, examine the primary works discussed. Every insight you make should be an analysis of the primary works you are examining. Outside references should be used to support your thoughts and ideas. Essay Topics Choose one of the essay topics below and write an eight to ten page essay exploring the topic by creating a thesis and arguing your point of view. Write a comparative analysis of a pair of poems from the text book which have a similar theme and were written from the late 19th century on. Compare and contrast such aspects as (a) situation and point of view, (b) figurative language, (c) tone, (d) diction, (e) versification, and (f) rhyme scheme or stanza form. You do not need use these specific elements but rather focus on those elements that lend themselves to a significant comparison. In conclusion, in what respects does each poem exhibit the individual style of its author and in what respects does it belong to a “school” (Modernism, Postmodernism, Harlem Renaissance, etc)? Susan Glaspell and Eugene O’Neill are credited with the creation of an authentic American drama. (McMichael & Leonard, 2011, p. 1708). Choose from The Hairy Ape or from Trifles and create a well-written essay arguing how the story or characters in the play are authentic to the American experience. with examples from the play. However, you should use multiple literary elements to support your argument. Compare and contrast the writing of Leslie Marmon Silko and Louise Erdrich. How do these writers’ depictions of the Native American experience in America differ? What commonalities do they share? You should use multiple literary elements to support your argument. Choose one writer of the Depression Era and indicate how his or her work captured the spirit of American social consciousness of the time. Choose one or two of his or her works for this topic. You should use multiple literary elements to support your argument. Who were the Beatniks and what social ideologies did they reflect and impact in America? Choose one or two of their works for this topic. You should use multiple literary elements to support your argument. The status of women changed politically and socially in drastic measure throughout American history. Choose the writing of two American women poets, playwrights, or prose writers. Indicate how the writing of the authors voiced commonalities of American women experiences. Choose one or two of their works for this topic (see rubric). You should use multiple literary elements to support your argument. This assignment should apply the following: Clearly identify the topic of choice and the thesis statement to be used in the argument. Identify and organize the three separate supporting arguments that include a literary element as support for the thesis statement as a way to establish the relationship between ideas. These elements should be directly derived from the thesis statement. Critically analyze the primary works to be used in the argument (one major piece of writing, such as a novel or play, or at least two shorter pieces of writing, such as poems or short stories) in the essay. The Final Essay must: Be eight to ten double-spaced pages in length, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Include a title page with the following: o Title of paper


o Student’s name o Course name and number o Instructor’s name o Due Date of Assignment Begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement. Include three literary elements to be used to support the main argument about the topic. Address the topic of the paper with critical thought. End with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis. Use at least three literary resources, including a minimum of two from the Ashford Online Library. Document all sources in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
