“HOW CAN DESIGN TECHNIQUES IMPROVE THE DIGITAL READING EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS?”
THEORETICAL DISCOURSE + The material value of text and the impact that intangibility of hypertext has are linked to the immersive reading experience
+ Digital technologies have an impact on the digital native with regard to reading preference in the learning environment and recreational reading
+ The physical constraints on the reader need to be taken into consideration when designing digital reading environments
+ There are key comparisons when designing type for all platforms including understand the different aspects of typography and how they translate in both the print world and the digital reading environment
11
CONTEXTUAL RELEVANCE + Readers have never had so many options to choose from in terms of how information is digested + Currently we are experiencing shifts between analogue and digital reading + Reading and understanding text is essential in learning environments + As Designers, a solid understanding of the reading experience and user interaction is important to enhance communication with intended audiences
2
METHODOLOGIES + Thorough investigation of previous theoretical and visual research as well as case studies + User observations to investigate reader’s interactions with analogue and digital media + Questionnaire and interviews regarding reader’s interactions and experiences + Development of creative outcome, testing and evaluating prototypes 3
REFLECTION + One technology is not necessarily better than the other rather both technologies can work hand in hand to improve one another
+ This research is not only important for the learning environment for students but is also vital for recreational reading amongst younger readers
+ Reader observations have provided deeper understanding of the reading experience
4
CONCLUSION + I have a greater understanding and solid background knowledge of the current reading environment + A comprehensive understanding of what past research and outcomes have achieved in this area and the steps needed to succeed in the future
+ Both experiences have much to offer therefore there is no necessity to make a decision between the two. + Many theoretical and design challenges are to be faced as we move into the next stage of learning outcomes for reading environments
5
FUTURE RESEARCH + Implement further user observations, reader questionnaires and interviews + Design and develop integrated analogue and digital hybrid book + Continual research and development for prototype as well as testing and refining
