01ANIMAL HOSPITAL EXPANSION NEW ENTRANCE AND OFFICE SPACE FOR EXISTING ZOO HOSPITAL 2017 PHASE: SD TO CA

The new addition to the Zoo Animal Health Center seeks to provide an updated care facility that satisfies immediate functional and operational needs of the hospital staff while also contributing to the long-term goal of providing increased public awareness of ongoing animal care at the zoo.

[Concept] The massing is responding to the surrounding context. As for the daylight design, since the entrance is facing west, the canopy is extending out for shading and East-side skylight is added to introduce more balanced daylight.

[Concept] The roof and wall are integrated and in order to make the iteration easier I have made the dynamo script to automize the process to calculate the intersection points.

[Datum points and Surface] The 12 edge points of the roof are the control points to adjust. It will first create the original sufaces and then process to the next step to calculate the intersection with wall surfaces and recreate the roof piece.

[Intersection calculation] When original surfaces are created, each surface will be extended and get the intersection points with the wall edge line, and then recreate the surface with that point.

04HIGH-RISE DESIGN

FACADE PERFORMANCE-BASED DESIGN OF HIGHRISE OFFICE AND HOTEL 2017 PHASE: SD TO DD

The vision for the site is to activate the Park for the citizens of San Antonio, as well as visitors, by creating an exciting mixed-use development that provides a balance of housing with local retail, hospitality, restaurants, cultural programs, stimulating art and educational spaces, peaceful courtyards, and other opportunities that can be enjoyed and celebrated by the entire community.

[FACADE OPTIMIZATION] SOLAR RADIATION

ANNUAL SOLAR RADIATION

By analyzing the southeast facade, we find that for annual accumulated solar radiation, the facade is uniform while in summer time, the south end actually received more energy and in winter time is the contrary. And when mapping the sunpath with temperature information we find that high sun angles (late morning in summer time) actually carries more energy which make sense to extend horizontal louvers more on the south end and taper down to the north.

SUMMER SOLAR RADIATION

SUMMER SOLAR RADIATION WITH SUNPATH

FOCAL REFLECTION MINIMIZE For a concaved facade, there’s a risk of focal reflection to a certain area. To quantify the risk is Complicated since it will be involves glares, thermal situations. But one solution to mitigate the risk is to add horizontal louvers to break down the reflection rays of light.

[FACADE OPTIMIZATION - LIGHTSHELF]

Baseline Too much daylight close to window would easily cause glare. Meanwhil, there is insufficient daylight for the deep part of the space.

Light shelf Light shelf can mitigate the inbalance light distribution of the interior, redireect light into the deeper space. OVERLAND P A R T N E R S

In order to get the optimized combination for the light-shelf, I used 4 variation factor to test: height, interior extension length, exterior extension length, exterior rotation angle. By using grasshopper, all simulation results is recorded and can be pulled up for analysis layer. 05CENTRAL ATTRACTION

A NEW WAY TO INCREASE URBAN ASSET IN NEW YORK High Rise Studio ARCH 703, 2014 Fall, Ali Rahim

The tower’s asset is derived from the concept of Central Park. Not only is Central Park a valuable public amenity, but it adds extreme value to the real estate that surrounds it. Normally, high rises have an outward focus with regard to view, where they are more or less profitable based on their adjacencies in terms of view out.

WE’LL SAY THERE ARE 500,000 PEOPLE WITH APARTMENTS THAT LOOK OUT AT CENTRAL PARK. IF WE GROW VERTICALLY WITH THE PARK, ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU HAVE A MILLION RESIDENCES IN THE CITY WITH A VIEW OF CENTRAL PARK. MARK GAGE

RELIGIOUS SPACE FROM FOURTH DIMENSION Parameterize Studio ARCH 704, 2015 Spring, Cecil Balmond, Ezio Blasetti

The meaning of movement, going up and down could relate to the experience of visitors. When going up, with body rising, you are closer to the sky, to a spiritual world, to the religion. When going down, with body closer to the land, to material world, to the secular world.

description: We started with defining a matrix and several control points. The inteference forces of cymatic waves reveal a morphology. The matrix is disrupted by the wave pulses of various frequencies and amptitudes. The inteference is interpreted using a series of scripts: firstly defining the distance between wave source and the matrix points, then distributing the matrix points by the sine or cosine functions. The patterns would be more complexed when different wave functions add in.
