COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS
MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS I am delighted to lend my support to " Destination Abaco," a promotional tool that is long overdue, given the island's status as one of the leading destinations of tourism and commerce in The Bahamas. The Bahamas, as you would know, is an archipelagic nation that stretches across an expanse of 100,000 miles of ocean, reefs and cays. Nestled amidst our marine treasures are places we inhabit; places where friendly faces, an open embrace, balmy breezes and heavenly sunsets are as alluring today as ever. This and more depict Abaco with its quaint towns, colonial motifs and enveloping entrepreneurial spirit. I congratulate Jack Albury, Ruth Saunders and their team for conceptualizing this project and bringing it into reality. There is every reason to believe that " Destination Abaco" will go a long way in portraying the island for what it is, truly a world class destination.
Hon. Perry G. Christie PRIME MINISTER

COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS
The Honourable Obie H. Wilchcombe MINISTER OF TOURISM It is a pleasure to be a part of another initiative to position Abaco as one of the leading islands of choice when vacationing in The Bahamas, through the launching of Destination Abaco. No doubt this very colorful and informative magazine will prove to be a useful guidebook and souvenir piece for the thousands of international and domestic tourists that visit Abaco each year. More so, its availability at promotional ventures such as trade and boat shows will be very effective in promoting the destination to potential visitors. Additionally, I am convinced that the new marketing campaign for The Bahamas will further enhance the efforts of the local community in attracting visitors to Abaco. It is a branding and identity campaign that puts a bold new face on our nation of islands giving each island equal billing. The campaign conveys a strong message that we are not just about the beach, sun, sand and water but we are about the people, the islands and the beauty of Mother Nature, for these are the things that make up The Bahamas. Mr. Jack Albury & Mrs. Ruth Saunders of Execuprint Ltd. and all those responsible for the creation of Destination Abaco are to be congratulated for their vision and efforts to keep Abaco in the forefront of our tourism industry. Your partnership with the Ministry of Tourism to continually showcase The Islands Of The Bahamas, in general, and Abaco, in particular, is greatly appreciated. Best wishes for your continued success. Sincerely,
Obie H. Wilchcombe, MP Minister of Tourism

COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS
There are a few places in the world where you can get the opportunity to enjoy top quality beaches, swimming, shelling, sunning or relaxing in tranquility while at the same time enjoying the buzz of civilization at charming native haunts. This is where the fixed income sailor and the independently wealthy luxury yacht owner can rub shoulders at medium priced, high-class restaurants and cocktail bars. This is where the union of technological conveniences and nature is not offensive. Abaco is without equal in things to do at sea, whether your interest is in bottom fishing, fly fishing for the elusive Bonefish, deep sea fishing for the prized Wahoo, Tuna, Dolphin or Great Blue Marlins. If you don't own a boat, we'll find you one. Sea transportation ranges from basic rental of small speed boats to captained catamarans to reliable intra-island ferries. On shore the ecological wonders of the island are at your disposal; cavern diving in blue holes, exploring indigenous broad leaf coppice, yellow pine forest, or mangroves. A pair of binoculars will introduce you to dozens of Bahamian tropical birds and other wildlife in their unspoilt natural habitat. Your stay with us ought not to be dull. With your availability and our creativity the opportunities abound. Enjoy your important visit. " The islands of The Bahamas - It Just Keeps Getting Better"

“ UNDERWATER WORLD OF THE ABACOS
By Isobel Sherman
The beautiful crystal clear waters of Abaco beckon tourists and residents alike. Gazing at the sea from a boat or from a beach is a wonderful experience; but under the sea lies a whole new world of beauty and adventure waiting to be experienced. How do you get to this underwater world? Why, you SCUBA dive, of course!
darkness because the hydrogen sulfide layer blocks out the sunlight. The "rush" happens because the diver goes from clear water to red water to total darkness in clear water. Tim said to see the stalactites in darkness with the aid of a light is an experience that most divers are happy they did the dive; but the Blue Hole Dive is really a one-time dive. Diving for wrecks in Abaco is very popular. The wreck of the San Jacinto, which was the first steamship built in the United States in the early 1900s lies behind Whale Cay at Chub Rocks. It is the home of tens of thousands of fish. The stern lies in 50 feet of water. It is a dive to see many species of fish.
Abaco Dive Adventures with divers and instructors Kay Politano and Tim Higgs will be your guides to this fascinating world. Let me attempt to explore this world in written form.
The newer wreck, the Deborah K, off Fowl Cay now lies in two pieces. The stern is in 90 feet of water. The cabins of the Deborah K are home to big Rock Fish. In fact Tim says, if you want to see big fish including Nurse Sharks, Eagle Rays, and Amber Jacks, the wreck of the Deborah K is for you. A trip to the Sandy Point Wall in South Abaco can be done regardless of the weather. It is the only natural wall in Abaco and goes from 60 feet below the surface to 2000 feet in depth. The visibility is 250 feet and there are beautiful soft corals to see.
Another wreck is that of an 18-foot dinghy off Guana Cay. This dive shows good reef structure and beautiful specimens of Elkhorn Coral.
Blue Holes, anyone? Abaco has a few blue holes, a hole in the land where fresh water and salt water meet in a very deep hole. The Blue Hole near Treasure Cay offers a dive that Tim says gives divers a "rush." The diver dives through a fresh water layer of approximately 45 feet and then enters the hydrogen sulfide layer. This layer is red in color and is 45 -60 feet in depth. At 60 feet the diver enters crystal clear seawater; but there is total

There are many excellent dive sites off North Guana Cay. The Fish Bowl is a very popular dive site because of the spectacular fish including Black Tipped Sharks and Eagle Rays. The dive is 55 feet and many divers repeat this dive over and over because of the fish.
However, I have saved the best dive site for last. Until this past month this site was just a dive to see a garden of coral and the sea life which lives there. However, now it is the site of a wonderful Cave Dive and Tim and Kay call it Guana Coral Caverns. Tim and Kay recently became certified cave SCUBA divers as well as instructors. To be able to do a cave SCUBA dive, one must be a certified SCUBA cave diver. This dive offers six large caverns all of which have a front and back entrance with many holes in the ceiling for the light to come through. The two entrances afford the diver to be able to go in one entrance and out the other. All of the caverns have had ropes installed to their walls to assist on traveling through the caverns if necessary. I viewed a video of this dive and the beauty was awesome. The caves are very old. They are so old that the coral has grown over the outside.
The Skyscraper allows the diver to swim around or alongside skyscrapers of coral that can make you feel like the skyscrapers in New York City in 60 feet of water. The Skyscraper is home to numerous Jacks. The Sleeping Giant Dive is a dive with three spectacular coral heads rising from 60 feet below to within 5 feet of the surface. Want to see Tarpon? Then there is the Tarpon Tunnel off North Guana Cay. It is called the tunnel because divers can swim underneath the large overhangs formed by the reef. In the cavern you can clearly see where the fresh water layer meets the salt water (called aquasphere). The stalactites are huge and the beauty is really indescribable. Now that is all from viewing a video, to be down there in the caverns has to be a mind-blowing experience. Tim says the cave are solution caves formed from the erosion of salt water when the water was low years and years ago.
According to Tim, many divers want to see sharks when they dive. The Edge offers an opportunity to see large Reef Sharks swimming in their home. Beautiful specimens of Brain Coral can also be seen. This is a good night dive site as well.

According to Kay most cave divers residing in the United States do not know that there are caves in Abaco or in The Bahamas. Most of them travel to Mexico and other more distant locales to dive. At a recent show in Miami Abaco Dive Adventures showed their video of the cave diving and this video attracted a large crowd.
Words poorly describe the beauty of these dives. Seeing is the best way. Don't worry, Abaco Dive Adventures can help the visitor that has never SCUBA dived. They offer what is called the Resort Package where you are taught in a swimming pool how to use the SCUBA equipment and then the instructor guides you on two actual SCUBA dives. All equipment is included in the price of the course. Interested in getting what is called C Card certification which is the basic certification in SCUBA diving? Abaco Dive Adventures can also give you the course and certify you as C card SCUBA diver and you can apply the time you did the Resort course to this course.
The C card Course is five days, 15 hours in length five of which are classroom instruction and the rest diving. This certification is good all over the world. If you wish, prior to coming to Abaco you can arrange to have the classroom materials shipped to you along with a CD. When you arrive, just take the written test and then dive.
For those already certified as C card divers or Master Divers Abaco Dive Adventures will personally put together dive packages for you. You can contact them either before your arrival or when you arrive in Abaco by calling 1-242367-2963. For those wishing only to snorkel Kay and Tim can take you to some awesome snorkeling sites. Exploring the underwater world of Abaco can add new dimensions to an already perfect vacation spot, The Abacos, where nature's beauty reigns!

Abaco Dreams The Story of Captain Leonard Thompson
by Isobel Sherman
One of Abaco's outstanding citizens and a living legend is Captain Leonard Maurice Thompson, O.B.E. Captain Thompson, a quiet, humble man, affectionately known as ‘Capt’ or Captain Leonard, was born on June 17, 1917, to William Maurice and Lena Muriel Thompson in Hope Town on Elbow Cay. Since his father was a ship's captain, Leonard learned the ways of a sailor at an early age. His eyes did not stay on the sea for very long because at age 10 he saw his future, a seaplane landed in Hope Town harbour. Receiving his education in Nassau and graduating from Eastern Senior School, Captain Leonard tried several jobs around Nassau including one at Royal Bank. In 1937 he became an apprentice to pilot Charles Collar, founder of Bahamas Airways. Leonard's duties included the cleaning and refueling of aircraft as well as loading and unloading luggage. He quickly mastered Morse code, the only form of communication for planes and ships at that time. Since flying was now in his blood and there was a war raging in Europe, Captain Leonard traveled to Canada to enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force and help the allies. After some stumbling blocks he enlisted at the age of 22 as an aero engineer in the RCAF. However, his sights were still on flight school. During his training time in Canada, he met and fell in love with Mary Tofin and on October 8, 1941, they were married. This marriage produced six children, Leonard Jr., Gail, Jeffrey (deceased), Kathy, Theresa and Chris. Finally, Captain Leonard was admitted to flight school in the RCAF and graduated as a pilot, captaining Halifaxes and Lancasters. His wife, Mary, accompanied him to meet his parents in Nassau on his two-week embarkation leave before he headed to the war zone. His new bride loved his family and the Bahamas so much she never returned to Canada. In 1943 Captain Leonard began flying with the famous RCAF Thunderbird squadron
based in England. In 1944 after completing 24 bombing operations, Captain Leonard was shot down over Hamburg, Germany, and was imprisoned in Stalag Luft 3. (The Great Escape was a true account of an escape that took place six months prior to Captain Leonard's incarceration at the same POW camp). He was held for over a year and freed after the Russians got a foothold on parts of Germany. Returning to the Bahamas, Captain Leonard worked as a pilot for Bahamas Airways. He later opened his own company called Skyways and flew many flights all over the Bahamas. He helped countless people with medical emergencies and received the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) for his search and rescue efforts. He enjoyed flying but Abaco was always on his mind, particularly a beach he often flew over called Sand Banks. In 1945 Captain Leonard applied to the Crown to lease and purchase Sand Banks. It was granted with many stipulation including that he had to finance and organize roads. He must construct at least five buildings, one of which had to be a 40-room hotel and the final detail was an 18-hole golf course. Only when this was successfully completed would they offer the land to him to purchase at the current real estate market value. Besides flying and now developing Sand Banks, Captain Leonard was a businessman owning restaurants and nightclubs in Nassau. In 1949 he was elected to the Bahamas House of Assembly representing Abaco and again in 1956, 1962 and 1967. He also was a member of the delegation that traveled to England to petition that Abaco remain a British colony when The Bahamas was granted independence. His flying gave him many opportunities to promote the Abacos and he introduced National Container Corporation of America (later bought out by Owens Illinois) to the area as well as some of the original second homeowners. Badly in need of capital, Captain Leonard flew many potential investors to the property including Bob Hope. When he was just about to give up, a man called Dumas Milner invested in the project, which they renamed
37
Treasure Cay. In 1961 a fire destroyed many of the buildings that compromised the original Treasure Cay. Milner eventually lost interest and sold out to a banking syndicate. The economy was down and the bankers bought Captain Leonard's interest without money, instead turning over some home site lots to him. They were sold over the years recoup some of the investment of monies and ten years of hard work. In 1967 Captain Leonard bought the Great Abaco Club from owner Walter Blair. The original hotel had been destroyed by fire. Captain Leonard had been approached on many occasions to sell the land for home sites but realized it was one of the few areas in Marsh Harbour that would allow a large waterfront resort. He felt the Marsh Harbour economy could benefit from a hotel and marina. In 1977 Captain Leonard returned to Abaco with his family to Abaco to build a 20-room hotel he called the Great Abaco Beach Hotel and Marina. It opened in November 1979 and was designed for future expansion. Though it was his dream to have a family-run hotel, it was very demanding. Leonard and Mary had hoped to semi-retire but instead of casual afternoons of fishing or taking walks on the beach, he was fishing to keep the restaurant stocked and

Mary was cooking for over a hundred people. The children devoted a lot of time to the hotel but each had his own interests to pursue and the family decided to sell. Captain Leonard found a buyer in 1986. The hotel today is known as Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour and is now Abaco's largest resort. A man that can entertain persons for hours with his many stories about Abaco, Captain Leonard wrote and published his autobiography in 1995. Titled I Wanted Wings, the book is available in bookstores throughout The Bahamas. He is currently finishing up a collection of humorous short stories revolving around island life. His beloved wife of over 50 years passed away May 13, 1999. Today this 86-year-old young man spends his time with friends, running errands for his children, writing stories and enjoying his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He lives life to the fullest.

REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT Abaco, which of course is the "Mainland" and its "Cays", is the Northernmost Bahamian Island. The geography puts us just one hour +/- by air from the Florida East Coast. Besides our air arrivals we can boast many visitors by means of boat traffic. Our proximity to North America has been inviting over the years to persons looking for "island living" nearby. Of course we also have persons from virtually around the world who also grace our shores. Property choices are diverse so that once a person decides that they like Abaco then finding a location for them to settle on is the next step. Our island is served by Certified Brokers and Sales Associates who are Members of the Bahamas Real Estate Association (BREA). These professionals are ready to introduce you to the many choices we have to offer on our beautiful "Island Paradise" that we are proud to call home. So many times we hear, "Oh, I didn't know that we could own property in the Bahamas". The immediate answer is, "You sure can!" Title to any property bought is transferred to the new owner by a Deed of Conveyance which is fee simple ownership. Properties available are condos, homes, vacant land, including hotel sites, acreage, private islands, etc. Some owners use their acquisition exclusively for themselves and others opt to entertain rentals. Of course all of the fun things are available - golf, tennis, deep-sea fishing, bone fishing, windsurfing, sailing, swimming, etc. and don't forget just plain old "Doing Nothing". The Bahamas Government welcomes foreign investment and offers many incentives to major developers. We are quite proud to have such a wonderful directory of second homeowners and they quickly become a very vital part of our many communities. Abaco began to appeal to foreign investors as far back as 1940 and over the years we have become one of the most prosperous and desirable properties in the Islands of the Bahamas Commonwealth. We could go on - but you get the idea - so contact one of our BREA members to really get to know "What's happening Mon?" Enjoy your stay with us.

Marsh Harbour, the third largest city in The Bahamas (after Nassau and Freeport), serves as a central hub to all other settlements and cays and is the commercial capital of Abaco. With the Goombay Festivals, fine dining, local entertainers and summer time regattas among the choices, you can be sure to find something to fit your fancy. Not to be forgotten is snorkeling on Mermaid Reef with its variety of tropical fish. If you desire more of Abaco than Marsh Harbour, you can find a variety of activities through local dive shops, kayak tours (offering birding expeditions as well), boat rentals and more. Marsh Harbour is an ideal starting point to see and experience any and all of Abaco.

Elbow Cay
Founded by Loyalist in 1785, Hope Town - the main settlement of Elbow Cay - has maintained its resemblance to New England's clapboard, pastel homes and white picket fences. A magnificent barrier reef protects white sand beaches and the unbelievably clear turquoise waters are filled with fish and dolphins. Adding to the charm and beauty of this historic cay stands an 89 foot candy striped lighthouse established in 1863 by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service. It is one of three kerosene lighthouses left in the world and is well worth the viewing General Information: Location: Transportation to Island: Activities: Population: Hotels/Resorts: Restaurants: Transportation: Marinas:

Guana Cay
One of the largest of the Central Abaco Cays, yet one of the smallest settlements, Great Guana Cay offers beautiful sunsets, marvelous reefs barricading a 5 ½ mile beach, peace and quiet for much needed relaxation. Visitors may want to check Dive Guana - full service dive shop offering snorkel trips, rental gear, bikes, kayaks and paddle boat rentals. For a very casual, laid-back dining experience, Nipper's Bar & Grill is an open air restaurant with spectacular views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Visit this historic settlement (first settled in 1783, making it one of the oldest) and soak in the contrasts of the narrow streets and brightly painted cottages surrounded by white picket fences and flowers. It's a pleasant place to explore by foot, bicycle, golf cart, or boat with many activities to choose from. Visit the Albert Lowe Museum and the Sculpture Garden, where you will learn the history of the area, or search out a quiet beach for swimming, snorkeling or shelling.

Man-O-War Cay
Known for the art of ship building and craftsmanship, Man-O-War Cay has continued to keep its heritage alive as it was centuries ago. Albury Brothers built boats are some of the finest crafted you'll find anywhere. Joe's Studio offers hand crafted items made of Abaco wood and at Alburys Sail Shop where you can watch them make sturdy, colorful canvas products. Both are well worth the visit. The Basket Lady Harriet Thompson, a native of Nassau now residing in Abaco, has developed her pineneedle weaving into an art form producing beautiful pieces that are uniquely reflective of the Bahamas. Beads, sea glass, driftwood, shells, raffia and Abaco pine needles are combined with her extraordinary talents to create baskets, vases, platters, plates and bowls splashed with vibrant color and an essence of Abaco not found elsewhere in the islands. In 2000 Harriet was inspired to become a full time basket weaver. Since then her work has developed through visits to Australia and Costa Rica at which time she took part in several art courses. Harriet's recent introduction of ceramics and the use of them in tandem with her pine needle weaving has brought an exciting new dimension to her work. Harriet's work frequents Bahamian art exhibitions and can be found in several arts and craft shops throughout the islands as well as in many homes across the United States, Europe and Australia. The Basket Lady's art studio/gallery is open and located in Marsh Harbour
