O

ne of the most breathtaking experiences for SCUBA and Snorkel Divers visiting Abaco is to see the majestic Spotted Eagle Rays swimming along our reefs. These elegant creatures seem to spontaneously appear at any given time during a dive. Sometimes they are alone and cruise slowly overhead. Other times as many as twenty or more may come into sight when least expected. Occasionally they

leap high out of the water and come back down with a huge splash. Spotted Eagle Rays are dark blue to black with dozens of white to gold spots on their backs. The underside of these animals is a creamy white. They have no bones; their bodies are made up of cartilage. They have large triangular wings and thick heads with a rounded snout. A single row of crescent shaped, flat, plate-like teeth are used to crush hard shells. Their diet consists of conch, shrimp, crabs, worms, small fish and other shell fish. Spotted Eagle Rays have long thin tails with up to 5 barbs near the base that can be used as a defense. The largest Spotted Eagle Rays have wingspans of up to10 feet, total lengths of up to 15 feet, and can weigh from 100 to 500 pounds. Spotted Eagle Rays have live births of one to four offspring at a time. The gestational period is approximately one year. Although Spotted Eagle Rays can be wary of divers, we have had some amazing encounters with them. One stubby tailed Spotted Eagle Ray followed us along the reef at Sandy Cay. We stopped, and watched as it began making wide circles around us. Suddenly, another Spotted Eagle Ray appeared. The two rays came together, circled and looped around each other, and swam out of sight. Just as we started to swim away the same two Spotted Eagle Rays came back. They swam up together and stopped right in front of us as if to get our attention. Then, they began to dance. What a dance it was! They looped and soared and circled each other for several minutes. And just before leaving, as if to take a bow, they came right up in front of us again and stopped before swimming away. Information and Photos Courtesy of Above and Below - Abaco Kay Palitino

magine coming to a place where you didn’t have to stay in a hotel but you could actually live in a Bahamian community called a settlement, perhaps stay with a Bahamian family, go fishing with local fishermen and their children, take a walking tour of the natural flora and fauna in that community, and hang out with the locals at the neighborhood bar. You may be in the mood for learning how to make that native dish or watching a cultural show under the stars while hearing the sound of the waves lapping over the sand. Sounds like a dream? It’s more a reality than you may realize. Such is the concept of community tourism. Community tourism is a way of building relationships between the visitor and the host community to foster exchange and understanding. Community Tourism incorporates the natural and cultural significance of the area into the tourism product while allowing the members of the community to

own, control, and operate their tourism market. As a result, citizens will gain a greater appreciation for their culture, history, and community, while creating more authentic visitor experiences and generating viable income for the local economy and themselves. An important aspect of community tourism is research. It is critical to know what your visitors want and need. Community tourism marries visitor wants with what your destination has

to offer. The Abaco Tourist Office is beginning to pioneer this kind of initiative in the Abacos by producing a Community Tourism Handbook outlining what community tourism is and the kind of attractions and activities residents can take part in to make that visitor’s connection with the Abacos a reality. Director of the Abaco Tourist Office, Don Cornish, states in his introduction to the handbook: “It is clear that our visitors crave this opportunity to interact and share more about us. We have a rich heritage and cultural nuances that can be uncovered and enhanced through this initiative.” The Abacos have a rich history and environment, making it a prolific and unique destination for the eco-tourist, the adventure tourist, the religious tourist, the cultural enthusiast, the health tourist, the recreational tourist, the maturing traveler, and study or educational groups. As Abaco continues to grow 26 Destination Abaco

and expand economically and its cultural makeup becomes more and more diverse, it is important that a firm foundation of its history, culture, and environment is laid by documenting them, educating the community about them, and sharing that with the visitors about them. Additionally, with the growth of the tourism market comes the need for related services. The Caribbean Tourist Organization cites several sectors of the tourism industry and several of them can be included in community tourism: • Accommodation - where people will stay • Food and Beverage – what they will eat and drink and in what style of environment • Attractions – what they will do for recreation, entertainment, adventure, and interest • Transportation – how they will get there and get around while there • Events and Conferences – what

they will do and learn, collaborate and network • Tourism Services – how the public and private sectors will assist the visitor through information, education, training, research, marketing and advertising • The Travel Business – how people will arrange their trips Tourism is becoming more and more self-directed and personal to the traveler. People are controlling where they want to go, what they want to do and how much they want to spend. Gone are the days when mediocre service and imported craft will give visitors that ‘wow’ experience. Tourism cannot be haphazardly approached today but must ensure that it is sustainable and reflective of the community it will impact. Community Tourism in the Abacos will afford its guests with the experience of a lifetime and in fact, it may take a lifetime for them to really capture the true essence of this mainland and

Local Artist Tim Higgs

Tim Higgs

Tel: (242) 367-2213 Marsh Harbour, Abaco

ow!” is usually the word that first W escapes the lips when discovering the incredible underwater photography

of Tim Higgs. Others likely to follow are “stunning, amazing, fantastic and astounding.” Let me tell you a little about Tim and his incredible underwater photography. Tim, who was born in Marsh Harbour, has Abaco roots which run deep, going back to the 1600’s when his ancestors on his father’s side came here with the Eleutheran Adventurers. He has a deep love for the beauty of Abaco and although he sometimes photographs terrestrial subjects, his greatest love is capturing the beauty of the world under the sea since he is a professional diver. About ten years ago Tim took up underwater photography as a hobby in order to share with his wife, April, who is not a diver, the incredible beauties of the undersea world. At April’s urging, Tim decided about four years ago, to go into underwater photography professionally so that other people who do not

40 Destination Abaco

dive can learn about and share in the amazing colours and textures of underwater life. Tim has to shoot many pictures to get just a few good ones and says he is not satisfied with a photo unless “it takes your breath away”. Tim is able to spend a whole day underwater with his SCUBA gear and will sit for twenty minutes in one spot waiting for a fish to come out of a hole. “It is very difficult trying to hold the camera still enough with the currents and also to be able to catch the fish in just the position you want him” says Tim, but anyone seeing his pictures will immediately see how his patience pays off. Over the years, Tim has developed a great eye for photography and has progressed from simply taking a photograph of an individual fish to now taking pictures which he describe as “more like landscapes”. He will wait until he gets just what he wants lined up in the frame “so that it tells more of a story”. His photographs are very varied, some show the vivid colours of a fish such as the angel fish while others depict the vibrancy of a school of yellow striped French grunts, the ethereal beauty of the lionfish or the grace of a pair of manta rays or sharks. All of these are shot against a background of colorful corals and sea fans. Tim aims for as much colour contrast as possible in his pictures and since the density of the water reduces colour he

has to get very close to his subject. “Ninety five percent of my shots are made with natural light in depths of twenty feet or less since the deeper you go the more colour you lose,” he explains. Tim’s photography has been exhibited in The Abaco Beach Resort Art Show, the Cancer Society of Abaco Art Shows at The Green Turtle Cay Club and Bristol Cellars. Some of his pieces are also on display in the Wrackers Art Gallery in Marsh Harbour. Most of his work is sold from home or from his website www.abacoislandartists. com If you would like to take your own underwater shots Tim is always happy to give pointers to people who dive with him. Tim is the owner of Abaco Dive Adventures and takes people out diving for the day at a location of their choice whether it be a dive site or more of a beach setting. If you are interested in doing a dive with Tim you do not have to be a certified diver as Tim can take you through a ‘Resort Course’ which involves a lesson of only two hours in the water prior to the dive. “ I then baby sit that person for their entire dive which involves staying very close to them and buddying with them,”

he explains. Persons who would like to have their whole dive recorded in photos to take back home with them as a lasting reminder of their wonderful dive experience can purchase a video of their dive or photos on a CD or DVD for a very reasonable price. Tim is now also starting to print his photographs on canvas which, he feels, gives more depth to the pictures. All of his amazing photographs can be ordered in any particular size and they can be framed if desired. Tim makes all his own frames from worm eaten beach driftwood which, though it sounds strange, is actually extremely beautiful and the very natural nature of the wood complements the beauty of the photography without overwhelming it. Photographs and frames can be shipped abroad. Whether you are an avid diver who wants to remember the beauty of what you have seen beneath the sea around this beautiful island, or if like me, you are a ‘wanna be’ who wishes they could see the beauty first hand, you will certainly enjoy Tim’s extraordinary photography. So why not visit his website or give him a call. He is always happy to talk about his photography and I can guarantee you will want to have a piece for your wall.

Marsh Harbour

The Centralized Beauty and Culture of Abaco

M

By Kristin Pearce

arsh Harbour dates back to the 1780’s, which makes it one of the four original “Loyalists” settlements, where the Loyalists from the United States remained during and after the War of Independence. The settlement was once Maxwell Town and Marshes Harbour coexisting but was later combined into one town named Marsh Harbour, named for

46 Destination Abaco

the safe harbour located near the heart of the town. Marsh Harbour is the third largest town in the Bahamas and is the perfect spot to experience the beauty of the islands without the hustle and bustle. Located in the center of the island, and a short distance from many of the neighbouring cays and settlements, Marsh Harbour is defi-

nitely a great location to base a trip to the Abacos. With an international airport, four banks, a post office, two pharmacies, a photo lab, several bakeries, grocery stores, doctors’ offices, travel agencies, and hardware stores, Marsh Harbour is equipped with all the necessities for a vacation. The town also caters to the tourists with many gift shops, resorts, clothing boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries. After arriving at the International Airport, a taxi will take one down Don Mackay Blvd., towards the island’s only traffic light. This area is considered to be the main town area and the busiest strip in the settlement. It is here that one will find mostly every necessity for the trip. Turning onto Water Front Street at the traffic light, one enters the area that is considered the “Tourist Strip.” This strip extends from the traffic light down toward the local ferry dock. It is in this area that the town provides the main tourist attractions. There are many lodging options

for a visitor to Marsh Harbour. The town provides many condos, villas and guest houses, along with luxury beach side marinas and resorts. The town is small enough that one could get around by foot; however, there are rentals that provide cars, bicycles, and motorbikes. This is a great service for those wishing to venture outside of Marsh Harbour and into the neighbouring settlements. There are also boat rentals and ferries provided for those desiring to visit the nearby cays. On a trip to the island, one shouldn’t forget to observe the local beauty and culture. Exotic flowers, tropical trees, and beautiful pine forests can be seen around every corner. And with just a short trip, one can enjoy the sight of the Abaco Parrots and the Wild Barbary Horses. The Bahamian culture is all around; however, it can be best seen during the Goombay Summer celebration and the Junkanoo festivals. Along with the rest of the Bahamas, most visitors come to Destination Abaco

where to stay Abaco to enjoy and appreciate the wonderful, crystal clear waters. Marsh Harbour provides many opportunities to take in the beauty of the seas. There are several dive operations that offer courses in uncertified novice diving, diving trips to tunnels, caverns and reefs, and where one can rent scuba gear and snorkel equipment. For snorkelers and certified divers, there are several reefs and undersea parks that are just a short boat ride away. There are also several boat rental companies where one can rent a boat in order to truly experience the waters first hand. Sailing excursions are offered and for the more experienced sailors, charter sail boats are available.

For anyone planning a relaxing trip to the Abacos, Marsh Harbour is definitely the perfect place to start. From this town, one can truly experience all the Bahamian beauty and culture.

reasure Cay is a jewel on Abaco and boasts one of the top ten most beautiful beaches in the world with three and a half miles of powdery white sand. Hope Town

A History of Peace in Paradise

J

by Kristen Pearce

ust three and a half miles from Marsh Harbour, a twenty minute ferry ride, lays the Settlement of Hope Town on Elbow Cay. This quaint, New England style settlement is a great location for a relaxing vacation or a day trip packed with reminders of previous centuries. This community is definitely one that is rich in history. The Lucayan Indians were among the first to live there; however, all trace of them disappeared when the Spanish Slave 56 Destination Abaco

Raiders moved through islands in the 1400’s. It wasn’t until the 1600’s that the British began to colonize. The sheltered harbours and caves began to attract pirates for their hideouts and they were later booted out in the 1700’s. The current settlement was then established in 1785 by the “Loyalists,” who received their name by fleeing the United States in order to be Loyal to Britain during the American Revolution. Arriving from Charleston, South Carolina,

where to stay Wyannie Malone and others planted the “Union Jack” on the landing spot, which was later named “Wyannie’s Landing.” The settlement grew to what it is today, with a population of an estimated 260. Despite the growth, the locals wished to maintain the feel of the past centuries. Cars and any other motor vehicles are prohibited in the town area of the island. Many of the original colonial houses and pickett fences still remain to this day. To know more about the history of the island, be sure to stop in at the Wyannie Malone Historical Museum. Exhibited in the museum is the life of the settlement as it originally was. Displayed are tools, utensils, and artifacts related to the sponging, wrecking, and ship building industries. There are also many photographs portraying the island in the previous centuries. When arriving on the island by ferry, one will be dropped off at the Government Dock, which is located in the main town area. Close by Jarret Park, a post office, the commissioner’s

office, and the old jail can be found. But don’t stop there. There is so much more to experience and enjoy on this journey. There are two main streets in Hope Town. Front Street runs along the harbour, and Back Street runs almost parallel to it on the inside of the island. It is on these two streets that one can find almost every necessity the island has to offer with two grocery stores, a bakery, two liquor stores, and many tourist attractions. The island also provides a public athletic field, basketball court, and swimming pool. The main attraction in Hope Town is most likely the 120 ft, candy striped lighthouse. Located across the harbour, it is easily accessible by ferry when requested. The structure was built in 1862 to warn sailors of the nearby reef and it is still operated today by a kerosene light that flashes in a sequence of five, every fifteen seconds, and can be seen from up to twenty-three nautical miles away. With the 101 steps to the top, one can experience the breathtaking

view of Elbow Cay’s Harbour and the neighbouring cays. Located on the grounds are a gift shop, marina, and liquor store. The ferry driver will gladly circle back for pick up in an hour, when requested. Another of the island’s main attractions is the beautiful beach that stretches two miles on the eastern side of the island. The pinkish, white beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or a scenic afternoon stroll. The coral reef located just thirty feet off the shore is perfect for snorkeling. In the sixties and seventies, surfing was introduced to the island when a few vacationers were spotted riding the waves by the locals. An afternoon at this beach can be topped off by the occasional sighting of dolphins or whales off the coast. For those wishing to explore the seas off the island, there are charters and boat rentals available around the island from places such as Froggies Out Island Adventures, Island Marine, and Sea Horse Marine. The marinas also provide full service for those travelling by boat. No trip is complete without souvenirs and gifts. There are many gift

shops on the island, including Ebb Tide, Iggy Biggy, Da Fina Tings, Kemp’s Souvenirs, Fantasy Boutique, El Mercado, Lighthouse Marina, and Froggies Dive Shop. One will be sure to get hungry on the visit. There are many restaurants located in the town area, such as, Harbour Lodge, Cap’n Jacks, Harbour’s Edge, Munchies, and even a local coffee shop. Other eateries outside of the town include Cracker P’s located on Lubber’s Quarters, and Sea Spray and Abaco Inn located in White Sound, which is a harbour at the southern end of the island. For those wishing to venture outside of the town, there are cars and bicycles available for rent. For anyone wishing to spend a night or more, there are many accommodations and rentals available from places such as Harbour Lodge, Abaco Inn, Sea Spray, Hope Town Hideaways, Hope Town Villas, Elbow Cay Properties, Malone Estates, and Island Marine. This peaceful and quaint town is sure to be perfect for the whole family to sit back, relax, and enjoy a tropical paradise enriched in history.

Man-O-War A Tranquil Retreat

I

by Jennifer Husdson

f you are looking for a place of tranquility like you have never experienced before, a place to unwind, go swimming, read all day or do absolutely nothing at all, then this little two and a half mile long island is the place for you. It is a place where everybody knows everybody and you can easily get to know the friendly islanders. If relaxing on the beach is your desire there is a delightfully secluded, peaceful and unspoiled white sand Atlantic Ocean beach where you may even be lucky enough to spend a whole day without coming across another soul. When you feel like a stroll then you can amble along the island’s

tiny streets hardly any wider than a sidewalk and take in the atmosphere of this little town which has been famous for its boatbuilding industry for almost two hundred years and is known as the ‘Boat Building Capital of The Bahamas’. It is the most water oriented cay in the Abacos and its sea going heritage can be seen in several nautically oriented shops and in the many ‘widow’s walks’ on homes where sailor’s wives would go to keep a look out for their husbands returning home from sea. On the lower road people can be seen painting boats, scraping bottoms and building fishing boats. Souvenirs and gifts with a nautical

where to stay flavour can be found at Joe’s Studio where you will discover boat models crafted by Joe as well as a variety of souvenirs and paintings by local artists. Mounted half models of sailing dinghies designed to be mounted on the wall are crafted by Andy Albury in his studio. Both Andy and Joe are descendants of famous boat building families. The Painted Fish at the dock also sells a variety of souvenirs and sea related items. At the Sail Shop one can watch sails, canvas bags, hats and jackets being sewn out of ‘duck’ a brightly colored canvas fabric traditionally used for sails. While there you can enjoy a chat with the Albury sisters who will be pleased to tell you about their trade and their island. Two small but well stocked grocery stores and a hardware can supply your food and general needs while the Dock ‘n Dine Restaurant overlooking the water and the Hibiscus Café provide a nice meal if you desire to eat out. Miss Lola, the island baker, can be found driving around in her golf cart selling her delicious bread and baked goodies so it is well worth keeping an eye open for her. What you cannot buy on this little island is liquor but the islanders do not object to you bringing your own over from the mainland. For those who love to enjoy all that the sea has to offer there are nearby reefs to explore and just a short boat ride from the north end of Man O War Cay lies the Fowl Cay Preserve, a national underwater sea park, which is well worth a visit for both experienced divers and snorkelers. Rental boats are available in Man 66 Destination Abaco

O War if you desire to go off on your own or if you prefer company then ‘Froggies Adventure Tours’ offers a fun filled day of snorkeling, diving and exploring. Although there are no hotels on this secluded little island there are several luxury villas, condos and rental cottages in which to stay. If you prefer to remain based on the mainland, this charming little get away is only a three and a half mile ferry ride away from Marsh Harbour on Albury’s Ferry which offers punctual, friendly service several times each day and it is a wonderfully relaxing way to spend a day .

Great Guana Cay T

ake a scenic thirty minute boat ride from Marsh Harbour to Great Guana Cay and enter yet another world, worlds away from the busy lives we call ‘normal’. The public ferry dock awaits you and as you stroll along the narrow concrete streets, you can see the old loyalist-style architecture of the pastel colored buildings that line them. Quaint little buildings house the real estate offices, drug store, golf cart rentals, restaurants, and grocery store. It is quite normal to see school children being dropped off at the ferry to be sent to school on the mainland and mounds of supplies being unloaded for the needs of the residents.

The Simple Life by Simmone Bowe

Great Guana Cay is seven miles long and is home to some of the most stunning beaches and ocean views with great opportunities to dive at the reefs or take advantage of the bonefish flats. It is primarily a residential community that provides many opportunities to find short-term and long-term rentals, home purchases, and recreation. Great Guana Cay is home to one of the most famous bars in the Abacos – Nippers – and it is known especially for being the Sunday afternoon hangout where you can let your hair down and enjoy the Sunday Pig Roast. There is no shortage of places to dine on Great Guana Cay and they range Destination Abaco

from on the beach casual to fine dining at Docksiders. Grabbers is a fun spot for dining and room rentals. Blue Water Grill at Orchid Bay overlooks the marina where there are yachts of all sizes and styles can be found. Enjoy a leisurely lunch as you watch the boats come and go. Sunset Beach Bar and Grill at Guana Beach Resort all provide great food in a relaxing atmosphere. If you feel like whipping up your own meal, Guana Harbour Grocery is there with a good selection of supplies for your culinary creations. Fig Tree Wine and Spirits sells ice and of course as its name suggests, wines and liqueurs for your drinking pleasure. If shopping for souvenirs and clothing is what you desire, there are several gift shops around the village and at the resorts. Stop at Tom’s T-Shirts for t-shirts, swimwear and footwear as you stroll along. Dive Guana provides scuba and snorkel trips and island hopping excursions that will add adventure to your trip. Rent a golf cart at Donna’s Golf Cart Rentals and take control of your vacation as you move along the tiny streets of the town and its outskirts. Green Turtle Cay Heritage Kept Alive on Green Turtle Cay by Kristin Pearce

O

ne of the earliest settlements on Abaco, and one that keeps its deep heritage alive, is New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay. With two safe harbours on the island, White and Black Sound, and with many inlets for hiding, this cay was a popular spot for pirating in the early days. It has been said that famous pirates, such as Mary Reed, Anne Bonny, and Calico Jack were once associated with the island. The current settlement, however, was founded in 1784 and has deep African and Loyalist roots. During the 19th century, at the peak of the pineapple, wrecking, bootlegging, and shark fishing industries, it was considered the largest city in Abaco. It was also during this time that many of the residents moved to Key West, later making the two cities sister cities in 1977. Even though many of the houses were dismantled and shipped to Key West, while others were destroyed in hurri-

canes, there are still quite a few of the original clapboard houses still standing over 150 years old. The population has dwindled over the years, and there are currently around 500 residents. However, the locals are extremely active in keeping their heritage and history alive. Each year, in the month of May, there is an Island Roots Heritage Festival, where the locals and tourists alike celebrate all the history of the island. This Festival spans over three days, and it offers great activities such as music, singing, a maypole, plays, face painting, games, comic shows, artifacts, souvenirs, the Royal Bahamas Police Force Band, Junkanoo, and wonderful Bahamian food. This year the festival will take place May 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The island is also famous for its Green Turtle Cay Marching Band and for the Bunce and Junkanoo Celebration on New Year’s Day.

Like every Bahamas Island, there are beautiful views of the crystal clear waters and scenic beaches all around the island. During the summertime, Green Turtle Cay is filled with activity and good times, with occasions such as the Heritage Festival and the first leg of the Regattas. Fall time is a bit more quiet and peaceful. At any time of the year, however, Green Turtle Cay is the perfect vacation spot. In fact, many visitors love the cay enough to buy vacation homes of their own.

T

he Treasure Cay Golf Course is a superb 18-hole championship course designed by Dick Wilson, one of America’s most renowned golf course architects, with several classic courses consistently ranked in “Golf Digest’s Top 100”. The best known probably being the Doral “Blue Monster” in Miami. The tropically landscaped 186- acre Treasure Cay golf course was the last Dick Wilson planned; he died before it was completed in 1968. His assistant, Joe Lee, completed the course and went on himself to become a famous golf course architect. At 6,985 yards from the blue tees and with 66 strategically placed sand bunkers, the Treasure Cay course presents a formidable challenge with ocean winds, tight fairways and a layout that makes you ponder every club selection. It will certainly make you want to play it more than once. If you are a single looking for a game, just show up at 8:30am and Pro Ronnie Bootle will assist you in finding a partner. Tee times are not necessary! In fact, if you tee off after 10:30am, you may not see another group – you may be playing your own private championship course! During the winter season, homeowner tournaments are often held at bi-weekly intervals. Guests are most welcome, a reasonable and fun way of meeting new people. Very attractive golf packages are available to guests staying at Treasure Cay Hotel Resort & Marina. 90 Destination Abaco

Wild Horses

of Abaco

As with all charitable efforts, funds are needed to improve the infrastructure of the preserve, to help maintain fire breaks and keep the fence lines clear and for long overdue medical support, etc. All funds go directly to Arkwild (donations are tax deductible for US citizens) or to WHOA for direct benefit of the horses.

years the wild horses of Abaco were Fmanyorthought to be a myth, animals about whom stories were told but were extinct. Actually, the wild horses of Abaco are still clinging to a precarious existence in a preserve in the pine forests of Abaco. Research for information about the horses’ history both past and recent began in 1992. Based on three separate DNA tests the horses are internationally accepted as a sub group of the rare Spanish Barb breed. They are acknowledged to be critically endangered and likely are the most rare breed of horse on the planet. Many organizations are hoping to see the horses come back from the brink of extinction for the second time in their recently turbulent history. They have much to offer and because they are disease and parasite free. Spanish Barbs were bred from the Barbary horses of the North Coast of Africa. One of the desert tribes known as the Moors invaded Spain with these peerless war horses and ruled Spain for hundreds of years. When the Moors were finally driven out of Spain, the Spanish crossed these extraordinary horses with their own impressive breeds and came up with a horse of great intelligence, built for speed, stamina and survival under extreme conditions. The Barb is in no way related to the Arab, having a different bone

92 Destination Abaco

structure and many characteristics not found in the Arab. It has also been discovered fairly recently that one of the founding horses of the Thoroughbred line was a Barb. Having been transported, confined to small, foul stalls with little water and less food on the tossing decks of Spanish ships as they travelled the Caribbean, it is possible that the Abaco horses arrived when one or more ships wrecked off Green Turtle Cay sometime in the late 1400’s or early 1500’s. There are many Spanish Wrecks on Green Turtle’s reefs. It is known that horses were brought to Abaco from Cuba in the early 1900’s to drag logs out of the forest of Abaco when the forests were cut. When tractors came into general use, the horses were abandoned. It does seem odd that stallions and mares would be used to work and not geldings. Until manifests or records can be found in Nassau there is no way to actually check the numbers of horses that arrived. It is also known that Columbus had two horse farms in Cuba. DNA work shows that the Abaco horses are Spanish, in fact most closely resembling the Puerto Rican Paso Fino. They in no way visually resemble the horses that are now in Cuba for whom no DNA work is available. The point is that no matter how they got to Abaco, these are horses of a known and

what to do exceedingly rare type. The horses, likely half starved and terrified when confronted with the drastic change in their lives, were helped by the steely determination bred into them and managed to adapt to a harsh environment that turned out to be an equine paradise of shady pine forests filled with enough forage and fresh water to help them regain their strength and to stay healthy. Rough ground kept their hooves trimmed. For 500 years they lived in the forests of Abaco. If they came from Spain, and for over 100 years at least if only Cuban logging horses came here. Unfortunately, with the building of the Abaco Highway in the 1960’s the horses’ paradise was destroyed. And the hands of humans have weighed heavily on them ever since. A tragedy involving a blameless wild horse and a child resulted in the slaughter of a herd once estimated to be from 150 to 200 heads. Three horses were brought out of captivity and placed on the newly developing Bahama Star farm, located in the middle of a second growth forest. From one stallion, a mare and her filly the herd rebuilt to about 30 - 35 heads when they were roughly counted in 1992. The horses ‘commuted’ between the farm and the forest. When Hurricane Floyd drove them from the forest to full time on the farm, the horses once again declined. Several were saved from death when roofing nails were removed from their feet after the storm. In 2002 the remaining horses were granted a government preserve of 3800 acres and the horses were moved back into their ancestral home. Pre existing conditions took more lives. Though the horses limped into the preserve, from that day forward there has not been one case of lameness other than two incidents of minor bruising which cleared up within days. The long walk to the preserve started circulation again. The pine forests of Abaco are a unique and rare habitat. Home to the endangered Abaco parrot, wild hogs, migrating birds (some of them also rare) and is also home to the Abaco Barbary Horses. The prevailing mood in the forest is one of tranquility, filtered dappled light, birdsong and the wind sighing in the tall pines. There are few sounds of civilization here. Wild

does not mean streaming manes and tails and pounding hooves. Those means panic. In the bush, as we are privileged to see the horses, they spend nearly all their time foraging and they eat a wide variety of vegetation. Today the herd is at eight; four mares and four stallions, Even in these small numbers the herd has attracted international attention. They are in glowing good health. They are living time capsules, classic examples of the carefully bred horse with which the Spanish conquered the New World. They are a genetic treasure trove, and WHOA (Wild Horses Of Abaco Preservation Society) in Abaco and Arkwild, Inc. (a 501 c 3 charity) in the US are working hard to keep the herd going. In 2007 three of the mares appeared to be pregnant, including two with positive sonogram results One mare carried to the point where she was showing signs of getting ready to give birth, yet nothing happened. It is assumed the mares reabsorbed. This is a critical, fragile time for the horses and health checks are scheduled. Also desperately needed is banking of sperm and ova. It is also possible to collect living tissue for preservation for possible cloning. It is the goal of Arkwild and WHOA to build the herd back up to viable numbers once again and to maintain the horses in a free environment as possible. This offers unique opportunities for research into the behavior of horses free of human dominance. It also allows visitors a chance to experience a peaceful, hushed environment and to meet with some of nature’s most rare and beautiful

Members" back in 1998 by children of Sid Dawes and Skeet LaChance and is still very active today. Their big event of the year is their Toys-For-Tots which distributes over 1000 toys to all communities within the Abacos. They also participate in the Big Hill Box Derby in Hopetown and do a number of rides throughout the island during the year. The club has a number of items for sale at some of the better gift shops in Marsh Harbour including T-shirts, hats, beer cozies, patches and stickers. The proceeds are used in many ways during the year including donations to a number of worthy causes along with the Toys-ForTots. If you are lost while walking around the marina district, the club has a couple of "You-Are-Here" maps beside Snappas and Bahamas Realty to help you find out where you are. Thanks very much for your support. Welcome to our island in the sun. Aarrrrrrrrrrr!!! www.scuryfew.org

The Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club was formed in Marsh

Harbour 25 years ago by Yachtsman Charlie Murphy who was then a regular visitor to the Abacos. Through the years the RMHYC has grown to over 1800 members and mates from all over the world. The purpose of the Yacht Club is to provide fellowship, information and support services for cruisers, landholders and others who enjoy visits and extended stays in the environs of the "Hub of Abacos Bahamas" As a service to the community the RMHYC has built and maintains the floating dinghy dock at the Government Union Jack dock in Marsh Harbour. They have purchased and installed two red and two green channel markers in the harbor for all boaters to use and this past year have provided lights on them for night vision as an added safety feature. The RMHYC is more active in the winter & spring months as more members are present here. They have a very active social life with many functions throughout the year for all of their members, as well as reciprocity for card carrying yacht
