Island Weddings W
The Aura of It All
hile many people may never have the opportunity to be among the rich or famous, The Bahamas specializes in making dreams come true and transforming fairy tales into a reality for any special occasion.
The stunning diversity of clustered islands stand out like gems encircled by crystalline waters, soaring skies and pillowed clouds that create once-in-alifetime memories for couples wanting to exchange their marriage vows with almost as many choices of wedding packages as there are islands to choose from. It is no surprise that Abaco is high on the list among the Out Islands. Referred to as the premier Bahamian resort destination of the Out Islands and the Entertainment Capital of the Abacos, the Abaco Beach Resort at Boat Harbour promises an unforgettable experience. The resort provides first-class service with attention to detail and offers a choice of three wedding settings that accommodates up to 400 guests. Wedding packages include marriage licenses, registration, magistrate fees, bouquets, decorations, boutonnieres, fruit, wedding cake and champagne. The Bahama Beach Club, located in Treasure Cay, is situated near one of the most spectacular beaches in the world, Abaco 2020Destination Destination Abaco

The fall issue of the Destination I Do magazine, featured a Bahama Beach Club wedding. One of Melinda Pinder’s weddings is displayed on the Destination Weddings and Honeymoons Web site. Melinda, a wedding consultant and proprietor of Buds N’ Blooms, provided exquisite floral arrangements at the wedding ceremony of Kacy and Greg Erdelyi from New York, NY, who were married on May 19,
2007 at Bahama Beach Club. “I could not have been happier with our florist, Melinda. She put together the most beautiful green and white bouquets for me and my bridesmaids featuring gorgeous and unique kale flowers,” Kacy boasted. Melinda considers herself a veteran in the wedding industry having been a part of it since 2001. She adheres to her motto of “Creating Memories That Last a Lifetime.” “I would have to say that the best part of the career is when the bride walks through the door, and shares her excitement for her special day with us. It is very hard work, but very rewarding to sit on the sidelines and see the expressions of the guest and everyone when they arrive,” Melinda revealed. Her wedding packages vary because they are tailored to suit the specific needs of each bride. Melinda commended the staff at the Administrator’s Office and the

Registrar General’s Office in Nassau for their efficiency and for simplifying the procedure for couples eager to get married. Kristi Albury-Wong, wedding consultant and founder of Moments Bahamas, agrees with Melinda when it comes to providing one-of-kind service. Kristi operates a full-service wedding and event planning company. “We believe that every wedding is a unique event ,and at Moments Bahamas, we go out of our way to ensure that each occasion is tailored to suit the bride and her family’s personal needs. Therefore all of our packages are tailored to each bride’s specifications. We also offer wedding invitations and accessories,” she added. Having garnered three years of experience in an industry that has evolved into an economic giant, Kristi is a member of the Bahamas Bridal Association, the Association of Bridal Consultants

and a certified Sandals specialist. The Bahamas Bridal Association is comprised of a group of experienced wedding consultants, professionals and coordinators. It is a branch of the Ministry of Tourism’s Wedding and Honeymoon Division, which is the governing body of qualified wedding experts for The Bahamas. Kristi caters to an international clientele as well as Bahamian couples, and as the only full-time employee of her company, she relies on a number of service providers, who believe in providing the standard of quality service she has set in place for her clients. Based on the review submitted by her last client, she is right on target. “Ms. Wong was everything we were looking for in a wedding planner. She was organized, thoughtful, and got things done in a timely and efficient manner. It was very important to have a local contact person to organize certain events for us such as the rehearsal dinner. We were too busy to track down the management team at the restaurant where we held the dinner, and Kristi took care of that for us. Kristi was also a good resource for ideas for the wedding itself, including flowers, locations, schedule, etc. 22 DestinationAbaco Abaco 22 Destination
She helped us to arrange hair and nail service at the last moment, which was much appreciated. During the wedding itself, Kristi helped to deal with a couple of minor glitches, so that we could focus on spending time with our friends and family. She also did an outstanding job of organizing ground transportation for our 35 guests. Most importantly, she is a delightfully calm and kind person, which I really appreciated during the somewhat hectic days before the wedding. I would recommend Kristi and the Abacos to anyone who is looking to get married. We were thrilled with our wedding day. And we were also delighted with how relaxed and pleasant our wedding was for everyone.” “Elegant but Simple” is the motto for weddings at Treasure Cay Hotel Resort & Marina where the staff and on-site wedding coordinator provide an authentic, relaxed island-themed setting infused with special menu planning, home-style wedding cakes, photographers, flowers and tropical decorations. Peggy Thompson, wedding coordinator at Hope Town Hideaways, has tossed in even more options for the daring with an island adventure wedding, the nature lovers with a sunlit gazebo wedding or a violin-serenaded wedding for those die-hard romantics. Marisa’s Catering and Event Planning, operated by Marisa Allen, is a full-service catering and event planning company that offers weddings with a Bahamian flair incorporating vibrant motifs of Androsian prints complemented with rich, natural elements of sand, seashells and native plants. Marisa also provides live band entertainment and sensational fireworks in celebration of the newlyweds. Her creativity has been highly influenced by her attendance at conferences and training seminars held internationally by Preston Bailey, the world’s preeminent event designer, and leading entertaining expert David Tutera. She has invested three years of service into the industry.

Regatta Time In Abaco is a five-race series held each year between the American and Bahamian Independence Day holidays. Its primary focus is for cruising sailboats although it does have a special class for the serious racers. The races are
held on the waters off different towns from Green Turtle Cay to Hope Town. The shore activities include street parties, Junkanoo and hosted parties at a different location each night for the ten-day event.
Homecomings
Every year various settlements or towns throughout Abaco host local homecomings. These homecomings give residents, past and present, an opportunity to showcase their community spirit, and visitors a chance to enjoy the festivities. Some of the communities that stage such homecomings are Sandy Point, Blackwood, Cedar Harbour, Moores Island and Murphy Town.

In replacement of the annual North Abaco Regatta, the North Abaco Power Boat Race and Summer Festival has been held at the Green Turtle Cay ferry dock for the past four years. This year saw the addition of Abaco boats in a competition that had been comprised only of boats 25 Destination Abaco

Hope Town Box Cart Derby
Every November, Hope Town becomes the venue of a major event called the Big Hill Box Cart Derby. When it was first introduced in the mid-1990s, the Box Cart Derby, also referred to as the Soap Box Derby, was held on Boxing Day. However, after a three-year gap, Hope Town residents began celebrating the event around Thanksgiving. This year, the box cart derby will be held at noon on Nov. 28. Although many of the participants are predominantly Hope Town residents, there are others who enter. The competition is comprised of a junior and senior category, and the selection of homemade box cars entered varies in design, size and colours. The event is a popular one – drawing those with competitive spirits and scores of spectators. Food and beverage stands are generally set up, and

tors alike get to taste the flavour of the islands. In addition to the variety of Bahamian dishes and drinks, there are performances from the world famous Royal
Bahamas Police Force Band and local Junkanoo and dance groups. Fire dancing, limbo, hair braiding and native crafts are also displayed.
Eco-Adventures Mangroves
There are four types of mangroves native to the Bahamas. The red mangroves are more prolific and actually grow out into the water sending their root system deep into the underwater ground cover. They are much larger systems and in some areas the kayaks can be maneuvered under the vast canopy of leaves and branches. The black mangroves have a much smaller leaf and grow more on the island sending their root system through the soil and up through the water in order to provide the necessary air and nutrients which promote its growth. The white mangrove and the buttonwood mangrove grow up even further on the island and not as close to the water as the red and black Mangroves. These mangroves are nature’s way of protecting the island from erosion and 28 Destination Abaco
the coral reefs offshore from pollution. They protect the island from erosion caused when torrential rains drop millions of gallons of water on the land from the run-off that would erode the structure of the island. Mangroves protect the reefs by slowing down the island’s rain run-off and permit more of a gradual dilution of the rain into the salt water. Corals cannot survive drastic changes in salinity because of their inability to recover from these rapid PH fluctuations. Another benefit of the mangroves is that they are the nursery for embryonic crab, fish and lobster young. Mangrove root systems provide shelter and protection for these young until they grow large enough to fend for themselves in the open water.
Blue Holes
The Abaco islands sit on a calcium carbonate structure with a myriad of underground caves and caverns throughout
what to do
the island. On occasion while gliding over the surface, ocean caves called blue holes may be observed. One of the reasons fish live near these ocean blue holes is because of the cracks and crevices along the walls of the cave. Many of these blue holes force large amounts of water in and out from a link to the deep ocean. This high volume of water also helps attract fish by providing a larger concentration of food. While kayaking, the water clarity will differ according to location, and in some places you will be able to see the ground structure and animal life below your kayak. Occasionally, you may want to snorkel to get a better view of what is under you. You may actually be able to see some of the young crab, fish and lobster swimming under and around the extensive root systems.

In the trees and along the shoreline various bird life, orchids, airplants, mosses and grasses can be observed. Some of the birds that can be found in trees are hummingbirds, ospreys, mockingbirds, warblers, Bahama woodstar, swallows and more, depending on the season. Your Bahama Host certified tour guides will be able to identify many of the local birds that you may see. Kayak tours are offered in Hope Town, Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbour areas. With over 65 species of birds on The Abacos, it truly is a bird-watcher’s paradise. It is one of the few places in The Islands of The Bahamas where you can find the green Abaco or “Bahama” Parrot, mainly in South Abaco near Hole-In-TheWall. There are many other things you can discover about the bird population here. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, some of the birds you’ll encounter are the Bahama Yellow-Throat, the Cuban Emerald Hummingbird, The Bahamas Woodpecker, the Red-Legged Thrush, the Olive-Capped Warbler. The Abaco National Park is comprised of 20,00 acres in Southern Abaco near Hole-In-The-Wall. The parrots once lived on as many as seven islands in The Bahamas, but now only exist in Abaco and Great Inagua. Bahamian Sea Turtles By Kay Politano, Above & Below Abaco
One of the most sought-after experiences for SCUBA and Snorkel divers is to swim with Sea Turtles. Divers may encounter them swimming along coral reefs, in surrounding sea grass, and sometimes on the surface getting a breath of air. Once in a while divers have rescued turtles trapped in nooks and crannies of tunnels and caverns. These turtles may have attempted to surface for air through very small openings in the top of the reef. Turtles occasionally initiate interactions with divers underwater. Some divers even joke about being approached by huge male loggerheads during mating season. However, for the most part, they keep a safe distance and swim at amazing speeds when approached too quickly. Marine Turtles travel great distances, cross international lines, and occupy numerous habitats during the course of their lives. Therefore, the preservation of these gentle creatures is an international issue. Extinction of a species in any one country can equal global extinction of the entire species. Today more and more countries are uniting in an effort to protect sea turtles. Bahamian waters provide habitats for 5 of the 7 known species of marine turtles. These are The Atlantic Green Turtle, The Hawksbill Turtle, The Loggerhead Turtle, The Leatherback Turtle, and The Olive Ridley Turtle. Effective 1 September 2009, the Bahamian Ministry of Fisheries Regulations banned the harvesting, possession, purchase, and sales of all species of sea turtles, turtle parts and eggs. They also prohibit molestation of turtle nests. The Atlantic Green Turtle The Atlantic Green Turtle is a gentle vegetarian. The adult’s carapace comes DestinationAbaco Abaco 32 Destination 32
in various shades of brown, gray, green, and black that form swirling and irregular patterns. The underbelly, or plastron, is a yellowed white. There is one fingernaillike claw on each flipper which is used for foraging. These turtles can reach a length of 100 cm. and weigh up to 150 kg. They grow very slowly, reaching sexual maturity between 20 to 50 years of age. Green Turtles dig their nests and deposit their egg clutches on high-energy beaches above the high-tide line. Over a two-week period they may deposit several clutches of 100 to 115 eggs each. However, 2 to 4 years may elapse between breeding seasons. Sex of the hatchlings, as with all sea turtles, is determined by incubation temperatures. Higher temperatures usually produce females and lower temperatures males. Although not proven, it is generally accepted that Green Turtles, like all sea turtles, return to nest on the same beaches where they were hatched. The Hawksbill Turtle The Hawksbill is a medium-sized turtle with an adult averaging 87 cm. in length and weighing approximately 80 kg. It can be recognized by its 2 pairs of distinctive prefrontal scales located on top of the head just above their upper beak. It can also be recognized by the two fingernaillike claws on each of the flippers. The carapace is usually richly patterned with shades of amber, black and brown, and the plastron is yellow. The Hawksbill’s head is elongated and comes to a point with a v-shaped lower jaw and upper beak that gives it a bird-like appearance. They live near coral reefs for most of their lives and feed mainly on sponges. Hawksbill Turtle nests are usually found under vegetation on both low- and high-energy beaches. They dig their nests and deposit their clutches 4 to 5 times, in two week sequences, from July through October. As with other sea turtles, sex of their hatchlings is related to incubation temperatures. They can return year after 33 Destination Abaco

entanglement in shrimp and gill nets and longline fishing pose greater threats. The death of Leatherbacks, as well as other species of marine turtles, can also be caused by eating plastic bags and other toxic debris they mistake for jellyfish. Leatherback Turtles nest from April through July on open beaches where there is little protection. Nests can be lost due to erosion caused by high winds and seas.
year to nest in the same location. The Hawksbill Turtle is considered to be endangered and in decline throughout the world. In some countries its meat, eggs, and prized tortoise shell continue to be harvested and sold. The Loggerhead Turtle The Loggerhead Turtle has a very large head. An adult can weigh 200-300 pounds and measure 3 feet or more in length. Loggerheads are reddish-brown with a medium yellow plastron. During their early years they live in the open ocean in sargassum or other lines of drifting debris. After they reach 40 to 50 cm. in length they generally spend the rest of their lives in shallow coastal waters where they feed primarily on bottom-dwelling invertebrates such as mollusks and crabs. Loggerheads usually nest every 2 to 3 years from April through September. They nest at night and deposit a clutch of about 100-126 eggs. The Leatherback Turtle The Leatherback Turtle is considered to be the world’s largest living turtle weighing between 200-600 pounds and measuring 4-8 feet long. They have a slightly flexible, smooth, rubbery shell. The underbelly and carapace come together with no sharp angles giving the Leatherback a barrel-shaped appearance. The harvesting of Leatherback’s eggs is a threat to their survival. However, 34 DestinationAbaco Abaco 34 Destination
The Olive Ridley Turtle The Olive Ridley Turtle, one of the smallest sea turtles, is also one of the most endangered species of marine turtles. Its carapace is nearly round with an adult length and width of about 65 cm. and weight of 45 gm. or less. Adults have a light olive-gray carapace with a creamy white plastron. The biggest threat to the Ridley is entanglement in shrimp nets which causes drowning. A device called a turtle-extruding-devise (TED) can keep objects larger than a shrimp out of the nets. This device is required for commercial shrimping in some countries. Oil spills are also a threat to these turtles as well as to all marine turtles. The Olive Ridley Turtle feeds primarily on crabs. They nest between April and July. The Bahamian Islands are surrounded by some of the most beautiful water in the world. Uniting with other countries to protect our marine turtles is a major step toward the continued survival of these amazing creatures.

ABACO ARTIST
E
ighteen-year-old Kayleigh Sands of Marsh Harbour is an up and coming young artist who hopes one day to be able to follow art as a career. I first met Kayleigh on January 12, sitting quietly painting at East Point , Elbow Cay, on the final day of an art workshop she had been attending in Hope Town. She was earnestly working to complete a painting for the art show at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge later that day at which all the artwork from the workshop would be displayed. Kayleigh was the recipient of a scholarship to attend this workshop, having been recommended by her high school art teacher, Lori Thompson. A group of more than thirty artists from all over the United States had gathered in Hope Town for this workshop which was given by renowned artist Walter Bartman, one of Maryland’s finest painting teachers who specializes in landscape and figure painting. Kayleigh admits that, although excited at this honour to be Destination Abaco 48 48 Destination Abaco
joining the group, she was also rather nervous. However, she fitted in well and greatly enjoyed the experience which sometimes meant getting up at 5.30 a.m. to catch the moonset, then running to the other side of the island to paint the sunrise at 7 a.m. and staying up until 11 p.m. at night to capture the interesting nightscapes on canvas. Mr. Bartman was very impressed with Kayleigh’s dedication and described her as “very talented with a lot of potential as an artist who understands the rhythm and shapes of paintings. She has the confidence and personality to be really good and to make her work successful. She has made fabulous progress.” This is high praise indeed from such a renowned artist and teacher. Kayleigh has kept in touch with Mr. Bartman online, and he has invited her to be a part of the workshop in Hope Town again in January.

Kayleigh graduated from Forest Heights Academy in 2008. Although she would very much like to attend college to study art, it is not presently an option for her so after leaving school she took a job at Abaco Gold. Here she began using her artistic talents to make wax sculptures to be cast into jewellery but had to leave her job in order to be able to attend the art workshop. Since then has spent her time painting and trying to improve her skills. “Nowadays, I get up, eat breakfast and then paint all day and just love it,” enthuses Kayleigh. “I paint outdoors when it is cooler. But when I have to stay indoors, I have a room that I am allowed to get messy.” During the cooler
weather Kayleigh especially likes to go down to quaint Green Turtle Cay to paint. When she works indoors she paints from photographs she has taken of beach scenes and flowers. For as long as she can remember, Kayleigh has been drawing at every opportunity and she recalls teachers constantly yelling at her for drawing in class. “My notebooks and folders were covered in doodles,” she admits. Although Kayleigh received some art and craft lessons in school up until grade 9, for the next two years there was none. However, when she entered Grade 12, art teacher Lori Thompson joined the faculty of the school which delighted Kayleigh. “Mrs. Thompson took a great interest in me as she realized that I had a special talent. She advised me to study for the BGCSE art examination,” stated Kaykeigh, who from then on became very interested in painting. For her examination Kayleigh was required to submit two still life paintings and two landscapes, and she achieved a very good grade. Kayleigh is excited to have just sold one of those paintings of a trumpet shell to a second home-owner for his new home which he is building on Green Turtle Cay. Oil is Kayleigh’s medium of choice for she feels that one is able to get much more vibrant colour with oil although she does also paint some small watercolours. Kayleigh has already accumulated quite a collection of her paintings which include flowers, sunsets, silhouettes and seascapes. Unfortunately, she has not been able to show any in galleries as they are not yet framed. Framing is so expensive, and is not presently within Kayleigh’s means to do. However, she does want to get enough framed by the new year to be able to partici-

pate in the annual Abaco Beach Resort Art Show and also get some displayed in the Blue Sky Gallery in Marsh Harbour. Kayleigh’s father, Rex, who works in construction, says he will make frames for his daughter, but up until now has not been able to find the time to fit it in. He encourages his daughter with her painting and is always telling her that “she can be painting instead of watching television.” Her mother, Naomi, is also very supportive and encouraged Kayleigh to take the BGCSE art examination although it was an extra optional course which would be an extra exam to pay for. Although presently a young, unknown artist hindered by lack of funds, Kayleigh is keeping positive and wants to get into doing bigger paintings. “At the moment I always feel that I am going to run out of stuff so I have been keeping my paintings small,“ she sighs. However, with a renowned artist like Walter Bartman thinking so highly of her and taking such an interest, hopefully, she will soon

Marsh Harbour
“Marsh Harbour and its Southern Environs by Jennifer Hudson
M
arsh Harbour, which is located on Great Abaco Island, is the largest town on Abaco and the third largest in the Bahamas. With a population of over 5,000, the Marsh Harbour area offers a large variety of businesses and provides an excellent selection of goods and services such as food stores, souvenir and clothing shops, restaurants, beauty parlours, and dive operations to name a few. Accommodations in central Marsh Harbour vary from hotels such as the Abaco Beach Resort, Conch Inn Hotel and Ambassador Inn to smaller villa communities, guest houses and condo rentals. The many taxis, rental cars, scooters and bicycles make it easy to get around town and also travel further afield. Marsh Harbour is a great centre for island hopping. For those wishing to explore the waters there are several boat rental companies offering both motor boats and a variety of sail boats. Ferry services run regularly each day from Marsh Harbour to Hope Town, Man-O-War Cay and Great Guana Cay. On the southern tip of the island an65 Destination Abaco
other ferry service is available to and from Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas on the island of New Providence, approximately fifty miles away. Bahamas Fast Ferries runs a schedule on Fridays and Sundays but the times change with the tide. For information one needs to call the ferry office in Sandy Point at 366-4119. The vessel is much larger than those of the inter Abaco ferries and it enables the transportation of one’s own vehicle and also heavy goods if desired. At the end of January, the ferry dock was moved from its original site and the bulkhead removed from its former location since it was causing beach erosion at an alarming rate. The construction of a new ferry terminal is scheduled to be completed by the end of October. The new site will offer easier access with less congestion as it will not be within the community. Since removing the old bulkhead, Mother Nature has moved back in and is replacing of the sand which had been eroded from the beach. In the earlier part of the last century, Marsh Harbour extended only as far south as Fire Road which is now the

busy intersection at which K&S Auto Service stands. In the 1950s it expanded a little further south with the opening of the Marsh Harbour airport. Beyond that were a couple of sleepy little settlements such as Cherokee Sound and Crossing Rocks. Nowadays, the island is expanding rapidly southwards with many new major developments coming on-stream. As one travels along what was once called the Great Abaco Highway and which has now been renamed the Capt. Ernest A. Dean Highway, from the Marsh Harbour airport heading towards Sandy Point, the first major development is the Abaco Club at Winding Bay. This private The Abaco Club on Winding Bay - South Abaco

waterfront community lies about fifteen miles from central Marsh Harbour along the Cherokee Road in a totally secluded and magnificent setting. The Abaco Club offers luxury vacation rentals, spa and fitness centre, boating, fishing and the world’s first Scottish links style golf course in a tropical location. Approximately twenty-five miles south of Marsh Harbour on the Atlantic side of the island work has now begun on two more major developments. Serenity Point is planned as a private community for the discerning home-owner. It sits at the water’s edge on Schooner Bay, a beach which has been deemed “phenomenal” by Conde Nast Traveller. Home-owners will enjoy an infinity pool, lush indigenous landscaping, a full service beach clubhouse, tennis courts and a host of luxury lifestyle services. Of the twenty-four home sites, seven are on the beach and the remainder are hilltop or elevated with beach views. This development is directly adjacent to the amenityrich authentic harbour village of Schooner Bay which is currently underway. The site of the Schooner Bay Development offers the only harbour opportunities on the Atlantic coast for twenty
miles in either direction and boasts sweeping views of the ocean. Schooner Bay has been planned as a model for the future growth of Abaco, redirecting the trend from sprawl towards environmental and community responsibility. It will meet the highest standards of sustainability with beach buffers and landscaping using natural species. A continuous greenway throughout the site will preserve the habitat of the Bahamian parrot. Strategies are also in place for the reduction of energy. The buildings will be primarily cottages surrounded by small walls, fences or hedges. The concept will be ‘reverse living’ in which the bedrooms will be downstairs and the living area upstairs so that the sweeping, panoramic ocean views can be enjoyed all day. Each home will have a screened porch and all of the buildings will be designed to reflect the character and tradition of the beautiful old time Bahamian architecture such as

can still be seen in Hope Town and Harbour Island. Tucked away off the beaten track just north of Serenity Point is the hidden treasure of the luxurious Delphi Lodge situated on magnificent Rolling Harbour. This eight-bedroom lodge opened its doors on October 26 and offers a great experience for fishermen as the nearby world-class bone fishing flats of the Marls and Cherokee Sound are nearby. It also caters to non-fishers who can enjoy beachcombing the incredible sweep of white sand beach, snorkeling, bird watching or just experiencing a relaxing massage. The lodge is designed as an eighteenth century colonial plantation house where guests enjoy a private country house atmosphere. These new developments will offer Bahamians, second homeowners and visitors even more options for island living than ever before.

Hope Town
“Hope Town’s second homeowners & Activities” by Canishka Alexander
L
ike many other islands in The Bahamas that have become home to renowned sports figures and actors as well as retirees, second homeowners have significantly contributed to the growth and development of Abaco. One place that has truly benefitted is Hope Town. In the last few years, prices of real estate have skyrocketed in Hope Town – a place that second homeowners have become increasingly drawn to because of its small-town lifestyle, slow pace and low crime rate. Dan McCully and his wife are among them and are among many families who make up the total number of second homeowners in Hope Town. Dan is a member of the Hope Town Association, which has about 105 members. The McCullys have been living on the cay for 17 years, and they have been quite active in the close-knit community. “We are fortunate to have a lot of people who care about each other,” he
75 Destination Abaco
pointed out. He added that crime and racial issues are almost non-existent – another advantage to his living there. McCully said when he first moved to Abaco, he used to produce a newspaper called the Hope Town Beacon. After selling newspaper subscriptions to people all over the world, he saved enough money to build a basketball court for the community. “I was looking to build something that will last,” he said. Like McCully, most of the second homeowners find some way of assisting with the development of their respective communities and also reserve time to partake in many of the local activities. There is also a Businessmen’s Association made up of 15-20 people who specifically deal with and address various concerns within Hope Town. A number of fund-raisers throughout the years have also provided Hope Town with a ballfield called Taylor Park, sand volleyball court and concession stand and a community swimming pool where
swim lessons are offered. Taylor Park is being renovated and will receive more equipment. In Hope Town, residents are always willing to lend a helping hand, and in the case of the concession stand that was in need of a paint job, within hours of Dan announcing the need over the Cruisers Net, the job was taken care of. Scores of locals and boaters have shown up to support numerous beach clean-ups . The residents also raised $5,000 for Anna Albury to travel to the National Federation of the Blind Convention in Detroit, Michigan. Dan emphasized the charitable efforts of two brother – Chris and Colin Lightbourne – who dove 300 conchs to make conch salad, which was sold to raise money. The money they collected was given to Anna. Newcomer and resident Chris Moorflet started a soccer lesson group in October that targets three different age groups. In September, about 40 Hope Town residents participated in the second annual Fun Run/Walk and health fair, which was organized by the Concerned Citizens Watch of Hope Town. Medical staff from the Hope Town and Marsh Harbour Clinics as well as doctors from Auskell Advanced Medical Clinic offered free health screenings. There was also a presentation on healthy lifestyles and stress management. McCully is pleased with the Hope Town Volunteer Fire Department, which he describes as effective. He congratulated Bonnie Hall, daughter of Vernon Malone – a longtime Hope Town resident – who was the first female fire chief in The Bahamas. Dan said the fire department is equipped with three fire trucks and three small buildings to house them. All of the volunteer firefighters have taken first responder courses. There is a defibrillator on site as well as oxygen, and a fast boat 76 Destination Abaco
is available to transfer patients to the mainland for further medical attention. Karaoke Idol is held at Hope Town Harbour Lodge as well as “rake n’ scrape” performances by Brown Tip; Jammin’ Jan provides great entertainment on her guitar at Sea Spray Resort and Marina. Arrangements can be made for bonefishing guides, island hopping, day sailing, deep sea fishing, scuba and snorkeling trips. Private boats rentals are also available and allow for an escape to nearby cays and secluded beaches, underwater sea parks and uninhibited fishing. Other activities include sightseeing, bicycling, shopping, and exploration. Movies are shown on Tuesday nights at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge. Locals and tourists can visit the historical Hope Town Lighthouse, the Wyannie Malone Historical Museum or stop by Winer Malone to observe the Abaco dinghies that he single-handedly crafts. The annual Hope Town Heritage Day is held in March. On Nov. 27, the 10th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival takes place followed by the Hope Town Big Hill Box Cart Derby on Nov. 28.
Dan is excited about the upcoming box cart derby, which he said will be his last. He and his son have built their third car and have held the second place title for the last six years. He is eager to compete against Ricky Sweeting - the reigning champion. The derby assists with the sports field and the Abaco Junior Sailing
77 Destination Abaco
program. The Junior Sailing Program received eight Optimist boats this year and three Laser boats last year. Dan and his family are happy to be a part of the community in Hope Town and are pleased to assist wherever they can. Although second homeowners, the McCullys are now intertwined in Abaco’s rich culture. After all, Abaco is the place they now call home.

A new website is making vacationing in Abaco easier than ever. According to the owner, Robbie Bethel, Abaco Cottage Properties (www.AbacoCottage.com) has quickly become the largest searchable database of rental homes and resorts in Abaco with more homes joining every day. “Typically if you want to find a place to stay in Abaco,” Bethel explained, “you have to pick an island then search through several or more websites for the various property management companies, resorts and privately rented homes that may be available in that location. This website makes all of that time and effort unnecessary with a single website.” The website includes privately rented homes, homes that are managed by rental companies, as well as resorts that maintain cottages in addition to their rooms. Abaco Cottage includes houses on all of the major Abaco locations: Hope Town and Elbow Cay, Lubber’s Quarters and Tilloo Cay, ManO-War, Guana Cay, Marsh Harbour and the Mainland of Abaco, Treasure Cay and Green Turtle Cay. The website is searchable by a number of different factors, including price, number of bedrooms, location, house name, dockage, sleep capacity, amenities, interactive maps and more. The site also has helpful information about traveling to and around the Abacos, destination wedding ideas, local restaurants and specific details about each location. Abaco Cottage was launched on September 1, 2009. Most of the traffic has been from the US, web surfers from Canada, South America and Europe have also visited the site. Several bookings have already been arranged since the site’s launch in September. Promotion plans for the site include local, national and international advertising, drink coasters with the site address in local restaurants and bars, tri-fold brochures to be placed around Abaco and a television commercial that will be shown in targeted markets in the US and Canada. In the coming months the company will also be launching “Out Island Cottage” a comprehensive rental home and resort search website for all of the Bahamas (a first of its kind). All properties on AbacoCottage.com will automatically be included in the Abaco section of that site at no extra charge. Abaco Cottage does not take referrals or commissions for rentals. The cost per home is $180 a year. Resorts are being offered half price for four or more units as well as being listed on the “Resorts of Abaco” page. Persons or Agencies interested in signing up their rental homes or resorts should contact him at e-mail: info@AbacoCottage.com or call 242-366-0576.

Man-O-War Cay “Celebrate with Man-O-War” by Kristen Pearce
A
ll Bahamian communities like to celebrate their heritage and plan events for locals and tourists to take part in. However, there is none that enjoy it more than the locals on Man-OWar Cay. This community goes to great lengths to ensure that there are several events planned each year and that they are each a successful gathering for local and tourist families alike. Each year, the events are kicked off in February with the annual Flea Market hosted by the Man-O-War All Age School. It is certainly a day filled with fun for everyone. Since the community is famous for its hand made crafts, there are many tables set up throughout the area selling arts and crafts, along with other various items. Many visiting boaters also take part in selling items as well. In order to keep the children entertained, there are many games available to be played, such as, take a chance, raffles, and “sojer” (hermit) crab races. No community event would be complete without tons of delicious foods, and Man-O-War is definitely famous for its cooking abilities. There are many tables set up selling dinners, conch salad, des-

serts, and so much more. This event is always held near the Man-O-War Marina, making it easy access to the hundreds of visitors from off of the cay. A special ferry schedule is always available, with ferries running to and from the island often in order to accommodate the visitors. Each year the turn out is great and the event is a great success for the ManO-War Primary School. This year the Flea Market is scheduled to take place on February 20th. You do not want to miss it! In April of 2009 the locals of ManO-War Cay celebrated their first annual heritage day. Since the locals are nicknamed “sojers” because of the vast number of hermit crabs on the island, it is only fitting that it is called “Sojer Day.” The close knit island worked together to make this heritage day a huge success. There were arts and crafts available to buy from the talented locals, games were set up for the children to play, and there were many delicious foods available. Along with these events, there were also opening and closing ceremonies in which many of the community leaders and Members of Parliament gave speech-
es honouring the island and the heritage. As a special treat, one of the oldest houses on the island was converted into a museum for the day. At the museum, old pictures and antiques were set up on display from the previous generations. Another “Sojer Day” is planned to take place in April. It is definitely an event that you want to be a part of! Ferries are also scheduled all day during this event. The entire Bahamas takes pride in celebrating Independence Day on July 10th every year. The community of ManO-War is no exception, preparing an exciting day for all to enjoy, young and old alike. The Independence Day celebrations usually begin early in the morning. Track events are held at the ball field including ball throw challenges, egg and spoon races, rack races, sprints and distance races, and tug of war. Later in the day, the events and games continue at the harbour side with swimming races and diving competitions. Following, there are events for adults only, which include wood sawing, nailing, and conch breaking competitions. All of the games and competitions of the day lead up to the famous slippery pole competition. During this event, everyone takes part in attempting to climb to the end of a slippery pole to retrieve a flag that is placed on the end. The attempts usually fail as the contestants fall into the harbour sea. This event is en-
83 Destination Abaco
joyed by everyone, young and old. As with any good Bahamian celebration, a special lunch is served at the harbour side, where children 16 and under eat for half price. The celebration concludes at night with the presentation of the awards and medals won throughout the day. There is also a fabulous fireworks display at the end of the evening. Last year the community was joined by Timothy Munnings, an Olympic silver medallist in track, and Whelma Colebrook, a former national record holder in women’s 800 meter race. The two celebrities participated in the events and signed autographs. They are expected to be returning for the Independence Day Celebration this year as well. As with all the events on Man-O-War, the ferry schedule runs all day in order to accommodate those visiting the cay. Man-O-War Cay definitely takes pride in its annual celebrations, making them events you do not want to pass up. If you are looking for family fun, these are the events to attend. Of course, Man-OWar is a must see for visitors any day of the year. Any sightseer would enjoy the local sights, original clap board houses, local hand-made art, beautiful landscapes, and the crystal clear, white sand beach. Whether you’re looking for a funfilled day of celebrations or a relaxing day of sightseeing, Man-O-War Cay is the place to visit.

“Sojer” Day
Residents of Man-O-War Cay have begun celebrating their first Heritage Day called Sojer Day – in recognition of the residents who are nicknamed “Sojers.” Throughout the day, locals acknowledge their history and rich heritage through food, skits, musical selections, artifacts, tours and booths that reflect the cay’s reputation as The Bahamas’ boatbuilding capital.

magine. You graze your feet along snow white sand. It feels like powder between your toes. The white sand extends for three and a half miles. You look into turquoise, crystal clear water stretching as far as your eye can see. The ocean floor is visible the entire way. Waves crash up on the beach in a rhythm that only nature can create. The water is warm and refreshing. Coolly, the ocean breeze brushes your skin. Secluded, it feels like there’s no one else in the world. It’s no wonder that the Treasure Cay beach has been ranked “One of the Best 10 Beaches in the World” by National Geographic Magazine and the “Best Beach in the Caribbean” by Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine. And it’s no wonder that it is a prime location for vacations, second homes, and retirement homes. Everyone wants a piece of paradise. If you are looking for a slower pace of life with some peace and quiet, Treasure Cay is the place for you! Along with the seclusion of the white sand beach, the small town provides most of the necessities, guaranteeing a comfortable living. But if you are looking for a rental for a vacation, the Treasure Cay Hotel Resort and Marina is a top choice. This resort

provides many rental spaces, along with 150 marina slips for those visiting with their boats. Here, you will also find many recreational amenities, such as an 18-hole golf course, fishing, boat rentals, scuba diving, snorkeling, and many other water sport activities. The Bahama Beach Club is also the perfect spot for a relaxing vacation. Each condo is equipped with a balcony overlooking the white sand and turquoise water beach. It is the perfect spot for a beach wedding, and the club provides a wedding package that offers a wedding consultant, several breathtaking wedding locations, a marriage officer, a beautiful wedding cake and more. If you would like to experience the peaceful town without experiencing a busy resort, there are many other options available. Rental homes, condominiums, and town houses are available throughout the town. Of course, Treasure Cay is a prime location for business or personal real estate investments, such as condominiums, townhouses, timeshares, etc. There are several new resorts and developments that are perfect for a new investor in Treasure Cay. ideal location for those wishing to purchase luxury waterfront residences including condominiums or townhouses, in beautiful Treasure Cay. The resort offers a large, heated swimming pool, available to all of the owners and their guests. It is located on the entrance to the marina and is within close proximity to all the amenities of Treasure Cay. Another recent development in Treasure Cay is Carleton’s Landing. Located on the Treasure Cay harbour, this residential club offers a mixture of deluxe, fully equipped carriage houses and cottages, with both canal and garden views. It has been said that this club is destined to become the best residential club in the area, making it the perfect investment opportunity. Sandbank Landing is also a brand new development that is rising onto the scene by the Mariposa Corporation. With over 200 acres, this development is located just outside the Treasure Cay community gate. After the completion of this development, there will be an 88-slip marina with many lots available for sale. There will be 23 marina lots with side dockage, 9 ocean lots, and 13 beach lots. Later, the development will include 57 condos and a 20-room hotel. Currently, the development is in the pre-sale phase with the construction of phase one still underway. However, phase one should be complete within the next two years. So be on the lookout for this incredible investment opportunity. 86 Destination Abaco

Great Guana Cay “A Taste of the Good Life” By Simmone Bowe

ake a scenic thirty-minute ferry ride from Marsh Harbour to Great Guana Cay and enter yet another world, worlds away from the busy lives we call ‘normal’. The public ferry dock awaits you and as you stroll along the narrow concrete streets, you can see the old Loyalist-style architecture of the pastel colored buildings that line them. Quaint little buildings house the real estate offices, drug store, golf cart rentals, restaurants, and grocery store. It is quite normal to see school children being dropped off at the ferry to be sent to school on the mainland and mounds of supplies being unloaded for the needs of the residents. Great Guana Cay is seven miles long and is home to some of the most stunning beaches and ocean views with great opportunities to dive at the reefs or take advantage of the bonefish flats. It is primarily a residential community that provides many opportunities to find short-term and long-term rentals, home purchases, and recreation. Great Guana Cay is home to one of the most famous restaurants and bars in the Abacos – Nippers – and it is known especially for being the Sunday afternoon

hangout where you can let your hair down and enjoy the Sunday Pig Roast. There is no shortage of places to dine on Great Guana Cay and they are in keeping with casual, laidback nature of the island and its residents. Grabbers is a fun spot for dining and room rentals, with a pool and restaurant. The restaurant at Orchid Bay overlooks the Orchid Bay Marina where there are yachts of all sizes and styles. Enjoy a leisurely lunch as you watch the boats come and go. Guana Grabbers at Guana Beach Resort all provide great food in a relaxing atmosphere. If shopping for souvenirs and clothing is what you desire, there are several gift shops around the village and at the resorts. Stop at Tom’s T-Shirts for t-shirts, swimwear, and footwear as you stroll along. Dive Guana provides scuba and snorkel trips and island hopping excursions that will add adventure to your trip. Rent a golf cart at Donna’s Golf Cart Rentals and take control of your vacation as you move along the tiny streets of the town and its outskirts. Orchid Bay Marina and Resort offers slips for your private or rented boat that is protected and provides full marine service. Fisher’s Bay also offers a good anchorage for boaters wanting to anchor offshoret and can accommodate larger craft. The newest addition to the cay is The Marina at Baker’s Bay, an elegant megayacht luxury port within Baker’s Bay Golf and Ocean Club. The marina is a stateof–the-art, environmentally friendly facility providing public access to sailing, fishing, and charter vessels, and deep-water access via Whale Cay Cut, accommodating vessels up to 250’. It is dredged to a depth of 12.5’ MLW. Hours of operation are 7 days a week between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. with a comprehensive list of amenities from golf cart rental, room rental, solid waste collection, wireless in89 Destination Abaco
ternet, and on-island shower and laundry facilities. The Marina Village is a hub of entertainment and dining outlets as well. The Conch Shack is a casual bar that welcomes you to the Marina with flat screen TVs for watching the latest game or news report. Harbour House Restaurant is an intimate bed and breakfast dining experience where you can watch the chef prepare a sumptuous breakfast, lunch, brunch, or dinner. The Great Lawn features weekly open-air movies and the pool and fitness cabana is there for homeowners or transient boaters if you wish to swim, lounge or work out during your stay. Room rentals in fully outfitted townhomes or flats are available if you want to spend a few days off the boat. There is no shortage of places to stay and if you do not choose to stay on your boat, there is a variety of hotels, villas, and houses available for rent including Flip Flops on the beach, Ocean Frontier Hideaway and Dolphin Beach Resort. Wherever you decide, one thing is certain: the majestic rush of the ocean will be heard, lush greenery will be your shelter, and watching spectacular sunsets and ocean views will become part of your daily routine. A true island getaway, Great Guana Cay is the unique vacation experience that captures small town charm with striking natural beauty where you will taste the good life and you just may not want to leave.

he Bahamas has hosted monarchs, heads of state, film stars, famous persons and even a few infamous characters, but in 2009 history was made when The Bahamas was chosen to host an international beauty pageant. The Miss Universe organization chose The Atlantis Resort to host the pageant and for the weeks leading up to the pageant the contestants were exposed to Bahamian history and culture. Groups of contestants were flown to Family Islands to experience the diversity of the country as a vacation destination. Abaco was chosen to host a group of contestants and New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay was a part of the day tour. In preparation for the contestants’ visit, which would be televised all around the world, homes, businesses and streets were spotless! The streets were decorated with Bahamian flags and the sign at Settlement Point welcomed the contestants. The day of the much anticipated visit was a beautiful summer day. The town was buzzing with excitement and activity as final preparations were made. 10 golf carts, bearing the flags and names of the countries represented, lined the
91 Destination Abaco
street near the dock. Visitors and residents gathered to welcome the contestants and the entourage of officials, security and international and local media. The Royal Bahamas Police Force and Defense Force led the small fleet of boats into Settlement Creek and were welcomed by a cheering crowd. Contestants representing Albania, Angola, Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Montenegro, and our very own Miss Bahamas stepped onto the red carpet that led them off the dock to New Plymouth. After a brief stop for photos, the contestants were taken on a tour of the town on golf carts driven by Abaco residents who would answer any questions. The short tour took them past the Wrecking Tree Restaurant built on the location where salvaged goods from wrecks were shared, and then past the famous Miss Emily’s Blue Bee Bar. The historic cemetery where generations of Loyalist descendants are laid to rest and the old Jail were also along the tour. Driving along Parliament Street they passed the Methodist Church, The Church of God
and the Administrative buildings before stopping at The Albert Lowe Museum. Renowned Bahamian artist Alton Lowe welcomed the contestants and gave them a brief history of New Plymouth as well as a tour of the museum and the old Bahamian kitchen on the same grounds. Across from the museum, Junkanoo costumes made by the local Junkanoo group were displayed on the patio. The tour continued along to the New Plymouth Inn, one of Abaco’s oldest hotels, and The Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden. The contestants toured the garden, a memorial to the Loyalists settlers who arrived in the 1700’s and established permanent settlements on Abaco and the cays. Miss Bahamas was especially pleased to find that her employer , a Loyalist descendant, is represented by a bust in the garden! After their brief history lessons, the contestants were given time to browse or shop at The Golden Reef souvenir store. Then it was back to the tour which took them past The Gospel Chapel and some of the oldest homes in town. They drove past the government dock to Settlement Point where some were photographed next to the original, locally-made sign that welcomed them. The tour continued past St. Peter’s Anglican Church and around Settlement Creek, locally referred to as the “creek shore”, where our ancestors mended their fishing nets and shared and sold their day’s catch. The tour ended where it began and the contestants made their way back to the luxury yachts that had brought them to New Plymouth. Their Abaco tour was not over. They were on their way to Munjack Cay for a Bahamian picnic. There is no resort at the Munjack Cay beach and the contestants enjoyed the pristine, relaxed and private atmosphere! The Miss Universe contestant tour through New Plymouth was very brief, but it was a once in a life time event for

the community. We had the opportunity to share our history and unique culture with young ladies from countries where they may have never heard of Abaco! The contestants were very friendly and adults and children now have keepsake photos of the day they met a beautiful young lady from a far away country, the Caribbean or even our very own Miss Bahamas.
