Ahhh…the Abacos!
Recently, someone borrowed the phrase, “The Real Bahamas,” and attached it to all of the Out Islands through out the Bahamas. Well, it is said that ‘imitation is the highest form of flattery.’ However, in the Abacos, it is an accepted fact that when that phrase was coined here, several years back, it was because no other island was able to boast of having some of the best of all there is to be found through out the country, at one multifaceted destination…right here in the Abacos. Today, this status remains and many still consider the destination…‘the real Bahamas.’ As usual, this very informative, little guide book, referred to as Destination Abaco, provides a wonderful range of information that will give visitors the knowledge to explore and discover a treasure of historical, environmental and cultural charm, emanating from the mainland and throughout the nine nearby cays: Elbow, Man-O-War, Scotland, Great Guana, Green Turtle, Spanish, Moores Island, Lubbers’, Mattlow and the many townships north and south of the island’s capital, Marsh Harbour. Go to the centre page and check out the local street maps or the always useful collage of information on everything, including… where to stay and what to do suggestions. You can count on the accuracy of Destination Abaco to present the facts, while the many colourful articles chronicle the times and happenings of the destination. Grab a copy and use it as a roadmap to a wonderful visit. If you need more, visit us at the Abaco Tourist Office… and do ask about our People to People Programme. Welcome to the Abacos! Have a great time and hurry back to see us with lots of friends. Ms. Jeritzan Edwards-Outten Sr. Director Northern Bahama Islands Bahamas Ministry of Tourism

T
he islands of The Bahamas can all pride themselves on their sun, sand and sea and Abaco is no exception. If there are two symbols that are synonymous with the island of Abaco they are the Abaco parrot and the Hope Town Lighthouse, signifying that Abaco can boast of being an eco-destination with a diverse eco-system, wildlife, plant, and marine life. So if you feel adventurous and want to explore the Abacos in a greater way, discover the nature of Abaco that extends far beyond the beach. There are many environmental enthusiasts and non-profit organizations that advocate preservation, awareness, and education among residents and visitors alike. One is the Bahamas National Trust that manages the Abaco National Park. This park, comprising 22,500 acres in Southern Abaco near Hole In The Wall, has been designated a preservation area by The Bahamas Government and is managed by The Bahamas National Trust. Included are 5,000 acres of pine forest – the nesting area and habitat of about 1000 endangered Bahama or “Abaco Parrots. The parrots once lived on as many as seven islands in The Bahamas, but now only exist in Abaco and Great Inagua. The forest is valuable to the parrots for several reasons: during the breeding season, parrots feed on the seeds from the pine trees, which
Photo by Peter and Kay Gates Parrots visiting Bahama Palm Shores
provide a rich source of protein for developing chicks, and they nest in limestone cavities on the ground of the pine forest. They are known to be the only species of parrot throughout the islands of the Caribbean that nests in the ground. This works against them, though, because they become vulnerable to predators like wild cats, wild boars, crabs and snakes, plus heavy rains during the nesting period can flood parrot nest holes, killing young chicks. A subspecies of the Cuban Amazon parrot, the Bahama Parrot is 12-13 inches in length and its white head and mostly green body make it easily recognizable. In fact, the Bahama Parrot’s scientific name (Amazona lecocephala bahamensis) literally means, “white headed Amazon parrot from The Bahamas.
It is said that Columbus was so struck by their numbers when
he made landfall in The Bahamas in 1492, he wrote in his log, “Flocks of parrots darken the sun.”

Friends of the Environment is an activist and advocacy group formed in 1989 in Hope Town, Abaco, Bahamas by a small group of Hope Town residents; namely, Rudy Malone, Suzanne Bethel, Candace Key and Frank Kenyon, who were concerned about the local and visitor practice of taking undersized crawfish. The organization has evolved to one with international reach, with focus on sustainable development, recycling, terrestrial and marine environments. ‘Friends’ as they are fondly dubbed, also host educational awareness programs for youth and the Abaco Science Alliance Conference that gathers scientists and students from The Bahamas and the United States to share their environmental research. The organization also assists Audubon International with its bird count in Abaco, providing them with baseline data for their research activities. The Abaco Tourist Office introduced the tour guide certification program for persons interested or already functioning as tour guides to be trained and certified through their office. There are now fifteen certified guides and you would be encouraged to partner with an experienced guide that is endorsed by the Abaco Tourist Office, the Bahamas National Trust, or Friends of the Environment. You may be saying by now, “Sign me up! I’m ready to go bird watching and learning about the natural and cultural heritage of Abaco.” There are several professional guides that provide opportunities to tour the various sites for nature, art, culture and diving. The Great Abaco Express with Glender Knowles offers a wide selection of tours on the mainland of
Abaco, Man-o-War Cay, and Hope Town, as well as Nassau and Grand Bahama. Glender, a Cacique award winner – the highest national honor for persons working in tourism and hospitality – is a knowledgeable and engaging guide who works diligently to ensure her guests have an educational and enjoyable visit, whether at local museums, viewing wild horses, bird watching, beaching and snorkeling, boat building, lighthouses, or native settlements where you mingle with local residents and enjoy native food and cultural experiences. He is a certified tour guide through the Ministry of Tourism, Abaco Tourist Office and encourages anyone to come prepared to ‘experience Abaco again; even if you live here, he says, you will see a bit of the island that you may have never seen. His mandate is to allow guests, visitors, and locals to experience the diverse eco-system, birdlife (migratory and local) and to engage in the rich history of the Abacos and The Bahamas. Ricky is a passionate and informed guide who will ensure you get lots of pictures and a diverse environmental and cultural experience.

Dr. Woody Bracey and Reg Patterson are other avid birdwatchers, and can host bird watching tours upon request. Do you want to go below the surface to explore marine life? Tim Higgs along with other qualified divers in Marsh Harbour and the cays can provide up close and personal encounters with the marine environment of Abaco. Brian Kakuk of Bahamas Underground does cave diving and was instrumental in discovering many fossil remains in Abaco. So whether above the ground, under the sea, or in the air, Abaco definitely has much to offer the ecotourist, the student, the researcher, or nature lover.

Hope Town Box Cart Derby
Every November, Hope Town becomes the venue of a major event called the Big Hill Box Cart Derby. When it was
first introduced in the mid-1990s, the Box Cart Derby, also referred to as the Soap Box Derby, was held on Boxing Day. However, after a three-year gap, Hope Town residents began celebrating the event around Thanksgiving. This year, the box cart derby will be held at noon on Nov. 28. Although many of the participants are predominantly Hope Town residents, there are others who enter. The competition is comprised of a junior and senior category, and the selection of homemade box cars entered varies in design, size and colours. The event is a popular one – drawing those with competitive spirits and scores of spectators. Food and beverage stands are generally set up, and earnings from the event assist in youth sports development in the community particularly the Taylor Park ball field and the Abaco Junior Sailing Program. The famous Abaco Rage boat has also benefitted in the past from funds collected at the derby.

tonwood mangrove grow up even further on the island and not as close to the water as the red and black Mangroves. These mangroves are nature’s way of protecting the island from erosion and the coral reefs offshore from pollution. They protect the island from erosion caused when torrential rains drop millions of gallons of water on the land from the run-off that would erode the structure of the island. Mangroves protect the reefs by slowing down the island’s rain run-off and permit more of a gradual dilution of the rain into the salt water. Corals cannot survive drastic changes in salinity because of their inability to recover from these rapid PH fluctuations. Another benefit of the mangroves is that they are the nursery for embryonic crab, fish and lobster young. Mangrove root systems provide shelter and protection for these young until they grow large enough to fend for themselves in the open water.
Blue Holes Eco-Adventures Mangroves
There are four types of mangroves native to the Bahamas. The red mangroves are more prolific and actually grow out into the water sending their root system deep into the underwater ground cover. They are much larger systems and in some areas the kayaks can be maneuvered under the vast canopy of leaves and branches. The black mangroves have a much smaller leaf and grow more on the island sending their root system through the soil and up through the water in order to provide the necessary air and nutrients which promote its growth. The white mangrove and the but-
The Abaco islands sit on a calcium carbonate structure with a myriad of underground caves and caverns throughout the island. On occasion while gliding over the surface, ocean caves called blue holes may be observed. One of the reasons fish live near these ocean blue holes is because of the cracks and crevices along the walls of the cave. Many of these blue holes force large amounts of water in and out from a link to the deep ocean. This high volume of water also helps attract fish by providing a larger concentration of food. piny lobsters (Panulirus argus), locally called crawfish in the Bahamas are found from Bermuda in the Atlantic Ocean to Brazil in South America including islands within the Caribbean sea. They are found within shallow waters and live within coral reefs or rocks. In the Bahamas, Crawfish are a major economic resource contributing to the generation of millions of dollars in the fishing industry each year. Many families within Abaco depend on this fishery as a major economic resource for their livelihood. It is a career option of many young men on the island that have limited education and want to be their own employer. There are no prerequisites for being a fisherman, just the ability to swim, handle a boat and free dive. Many communities within the Abaco’s were built from incomes from the crawfish industry. During the open season, August 1- March 31, fishermen can spend up to weeks at a time on major fishing boats. Others choose to launch their boats within their communities and fish on a daily basis as long as the weather permits. However in the last few years their population numbers have seen some decline. Many threats have been identified in Abaco as contributing in their decline over the years. Some of these threats include: overfish-
ing, illegal fishing of egg-bearing females, illegal fishing of juveniles, invasive Lion Fish (Pterois volitans) pollution, effects of climate change, wetland degradation fishing out of season and ghost traps. The top threat facing Abaco lobster populations is illegal fishing of juvenile lobsters. According to scientists at the Perry Institute for Marine Sciences, Lobsters

can reach maturity from 3.7-7.9 inches. In the Bahamas, lobster should have a minimum tail length of 5.5 inches in order to harvest. This ensures that lobsters at least have an opportunity to reproduce at least once during their lifetime and replenish the population. However many fishermen continue to fish lobsters before they have an opportunity to mature and reproduce. This practice continues because of the need to provide for their families. If this practice continues, the Bahamas may see declined lobster populations and an

Although lobsters are sought after because of their high economic value on the local and international market, lobsters are a critical keystone species in the marine environment. healthy reefs. During the day, Spiny Lobsters hide in crevices of rocky corals and reefs. At night they move out into open areas such as sea grass beds and sandy flats foraging on food such as algae, snails, crabs and other bottom dwelling organisms. Turtles, Trigger fish, nurse sharks and Nassau Grouper all feed on Spiny Lobsters. Their presence is an indicator of reef health and biodiversity. In order to protect local lobster populations from overharvesting of juveniles, industry leaders along with the Government of the Bahamas are work-
ing with local fishermen in Abaco on developing new fishing standards and practices that will assist in reducing the amount of juvenile lobsters caught each year. Friends of the Environment a local non-profit environmental organization in Marsh Harbour is also working with fishermen, industry leaders and law enforcers on raising the level of pride in fishermen to protect their resources. They have launched a new social marketing campaign in Abaco called “Size Matters” aimed at changing behaviors that cause threats to local lobster populations. Key components of the campaign will include a Fishermen’s Sustainable Catch Program in which fishermen will be will be taught sustainable fishing practices. School children will benefit from the education components of the campaign such as puppet shows, mascot appearances at school visits, activity books, stickers, posters and many more. The community will be engaged in popular songs, artist’s murals, a radio drama and campaign activities at community social events. The Abaco Club on Winding Bay The Abaco Club on Winding Bay features the world’s first Scottish style tropical links golf course. The par 72 • 7 • 123 yard championship course, designed by Tom Mackenzie and Donald Steel, tracts upwind and downwind knowingly along a two mile pristine, powder-soft sand beach, and concludes in a crescendo style with four stunning holes along a canyon and sea cliff. The dunes that dominate throughout would be the envy of many of the greatest seaside layouts. Amenities at the Club include: clubhouse and infinity pool, European spa, deep sea and bone fishing, equestrian, tennis, children’s activities and numerous water sports. The Club’s private plane and air terminal, as well as sport and leisure boats, are also available to members and guests. The Club welcomes non-members to enjoy the private club once only, and exquisite cottages are available for rent. Estate lots and exquisite turn-key cottages are priced from $875,000 to $4 million. Nonresident membership is also available. Information & Ports of Entry in Abaco Customs Procedures
Upon entering The Bahamas the master of a vessel must place the vessel at an authorized port. The vessel must first clear customs prior to any crew coming ashore or the unloading or loading of any cargo.
Immigration Procedures
No person is to land in The Bahamas from a foreign territory without leave of an Immigration Officer. All vessels must be landed at an authorised port of entry. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in imprisonment/forfeiture. The captain should have the following information ready for Customs officials: ship’s documentation/registration, passports (or birth certificates and valid drivers licenses/photo i.d.) for all persons aboard, pet import permit and firearms information (make, model, serial number and number of rounds or ammunition). The boat’s Temporary Cruising Permit is for one year from date of entry and may be renewed for up to two further years if desired by written application to Bahamas Customs, Nassau, prior to expiration and payment of $500 per year. To leave your boat in the Bahamas permanently, you must pay an import duty of 27 percent for vessels under 30 ft. or six percent for vessels 30-100 ft. At your first opportunity, make copies of your cruising permit. If you need to fly home, you will need a copy, as well as your passport, to present to your airline and Bahamas Immigration when you reenter the Bahamas. Leave the original on the boat. Since there is no income tax in the Bahamas, there is usually a 35% duty, plus shipping costs, added to most consumer goods. Expect to pay duty on everything you have shipped in, other than printed matter, original art work or replacement boat parts. The 7% stamp tax is payable on replacement parts, which may be imported duty free as long as a copy of the boat’s cruising permit accompanies the imported items when cleared. If you experience anything contrary to this, call Comptroller of Customs in Nassau at 242-302-3302.

ABACO ARTIST ‘It’s in the Bag’ for Lillian Cash Jennifer Hudson.
“It is exciting to me every time I see someone carrying one of my bags and I feel very appreciative,” says Lillian Cash, Although she is not the only person on Abaco making straw bags she always knows if the bag is hers since it bears her distinctive label, ‘It’s in the Bag’ and she produces some very unique pieces which are easily identifiable. When one sees the intricacy and beauty of Lillian’s designs and the exceptional workmanship, it is difficult to believe that she has only been sewing bags for the last three years. Her interest in craftwork first became evident as a young child when she learned to sew and crochet, skills which she has continued to develop along with the art of quilting. Always an admirer of straw work, Lillian wanted to learn the skill for herself and so, while working on Bay Street in Nassau, she seized the opportunity to visit the straw market day after day to watch the vendors plait and sew baskets. About three years ago when Lillian really felt the time was right to pursue her dreams and begin her new craft she purchased a straw bag, the design of which she especially liked, and pulled it to pieces to discover all the details of how exactly it was made. Though

she had never attended any formal classes in the craft it did not take her long to figure it out. She made just one or two bags before showing them to somebody. “I could not believe their reaction, they actually wanted to buy one” she said. Since then Lillian’s bag designs have become ever more varied in shape, form, size and colour. “If I see something I like I will just figure it out,” she says and this adventurous attitude has helped turn her dream into a success story. The straw Lillian uses comes from Long Island, the home of all the best straw plait. Her family sends her rolls of plait which they make from the silver palm top. Until recently all straw was left in its natural colour but nowadays it can be purchased in rolls already dyed in an assortment of attractive colours. Both plain and complex weaving patterns also add to the intricacy of design. There are at least 25 different weaves with such fascinating names as fish pot, fish gill, Jacob’s ladder and Peas’n Rice. “I love all of the patterns as they are all so nice but my favourites are fish pot and fish gill and I add colorful fabrics to show through the lacy designs,” says Lillian. The bags are put together with an ordinary sewing machine using a number 18 heavy needle and Lillian uses fishing line for its durability instead of cotton thread . She pays great attention to detail and is very exact in her work for “the success of a bag lies in the accuracy of cutting, ” she says. While appearing quite delicate, these straw bags are actually very sturdy and durable and last for many years. In the past year Lillian has also started a line

of colorful and distinctive burlap and straw bags, some of which have beaded decorations. In addition to a myriad of unique handbag and shoulder bag shapes and designs for adults and children, Lillian also makes small coin purses, passport holders and portfolios. Besides this large variety of styles, the bags come in all sizes to fit all tastes. “I have found that tourists prefer the smaller bags while Bahamians go for the larger bags,” explains Lillian. “If people have a special design or colour that they want then I am always happy to take special orders to fulfill their wishes.” Most of Lillian’s evenings and weekends after a full day’s work as an accountant, are taken up with her straw work and she admits that these days business has become so good that she can hardly keep up with the orders. “I am particularly busy around special days such as Mother‘s
Day,” she explains. “I love coming up with new designs and always appreciate seeing people using my bags and knowing that many of them are being carried home by people all over the world,” she says. ‘It’s in the Bag’ designs are on sale at Mangoes Boutique in Marsh Harbour, The Painted Fish, Man O War Cay and Ebb Tide in Hope Town. Lillian also shows her straw work at many shows both on Abaco and New Providence including the Green Turtle Cay Cancer Society Art Show, The Ministry of Tourism’s Tea Party for second home owners, Christmas Jollification in Nassau and regular shows at the Abaco Club on Winding Bay. She is also a member of the Abaco Artists Guild and may be contacted at 242 466 0918. Originally from Nassau, Lillian has roots in both Abaco and Long Island and has chosen Abaco as her home since 2001.

Marsh Harbour
“Fun-Filled Celebrations All Year Long” by Kristen Pearce
B
eing the island’s capital and with its beautiful waters, tourist locations, and gifts shops, Marsh Harbour is a great location for a trip to Abaco. And within a short travel distance to every settlement on the island, Marsh Harbour is the most centralized settlement on Abaco. Being the hub of activity in Abaco, it has every essential for a vacation and is a centralized location to enjoy all that Abaco has to offer, no matter what time of year. However, the summer months are definitely a great time to plan a trip. With the many activities and celebrations to take part in, these summer months are the perfect place to start on the events of the year. One of the biggest events that take place in the town is the ‘Junkanoo Summer Festival,’ a native celebration throughout the month of June. Located at the Goombay Park, the festival includes vibrant costumes, dancing, and instruments, such as drums, cowbells, and whistles, while the spectators gather around. The festival usually opens with a special by the Royal Bahamas Police Band. Everyone that attends can eat delicious Bahamian foods, win prizes, purchase Bahamian made items, and rush in the Junkanoo parade. It is definitely a fun-filled time for everyone, locals and tourists alike.
The month of July always brings “Regatta Time in Abaco.” This celebration takes place between the American and the Bahamian Independence Days, linking the two events. This year the event will take place between July 2nd and July 10th. Dozens of sailing enthusiasts, with mostly American sloops, arrive in Abaco for this funfilled time of sailing races. These races take place throughout Abaco, in the different settlements and cays, such as Green Turtle Cay, Treasure Cay, Guana Cay, Hope Town, and Marsh Harbour. This year marks the 32nd time this event will take place. The next few months in Marsh Harbour are quiet ones. But Marsh Harbour is always a great place to experience the local culture. In October there is an ‘Open Water Swim Race,’ a 5K triangular swim race, located in the channel at the Great Abaco Beach Resort. In this event, outstanding swimmers, locals and visitors, take place in the race,

competing for the gold or just for fun. Every year, as the Christmas Season approaches and the holiday spirit fills the air, the Ministry of Tourism hosts an annual ‘Abaco Christmas Festival.’ This year it will take place on December 4th. It is a great time for the whole family. There are games, arts and crafts, live entertainment from soloists and bands, and Junkanoo parades. Santa even visits, bringing toys for all the children. At the end of January, the Bahamas National Trust hosts an art show at the Great Abaco Beach Hotel. The ‘Art for the Parks’ is a full weekend event where all of the local artists gather together to display and sell their products. This celebration begins with a Wine Tasting on the Friday night and is followed by two days of arts and crafts, delicious foods, and many scheduled events. During the month of February, the local schools put together a ‘Junior Junkanoo’ celebration. This event takes place in the streets of the town, where the children of Abaco parade together, playing music Destination Abaco 75
and competing for the top position. There is also a ‘Senior Junkanoo’ that also takes place in February. These events are grand times, filled with the Bahamian heritage and culture. Each year, in the month of March, the Friends of the Environment group hosts an “Annual Reef Ball.” At this fundraiser, locals are recognized with awards for their significant roles in protecting Abaco’s environment. Tickets are sold for this event that is filled with dinner, dancing, fun and awards. Throughout the year, Marsh Harbour is the home to many fishing tournaments. In February, there is the ‘Inaugural Wahoo Championship,’ where the only fish sought after by the participants is the Wahoo. The ‘Bertram Hatteras Shootout
Tournament’ takes place in the end of April. This tournament is the crème de la crème of tournaments held in Abaco. One of the most competitive fishing tournaments in Abaco is the ‘HMY Billfish Blast’ that takes place in the beginning of June. The great fishing and other scheduled activities are a remarkable time for anglers and non-participants alike. Also in the beginning of June is the ‘BBC Boat Harbour Championship.’ This event is sponsored by Rolex and has many great prizes for the biggest catch. Other than the annual scheduled events, there are always celebrations, cookouts, art shows and fundraisers taking place throughout Marsh Harbour all year long, making it the perfect spot for your next vacation. ope Town Village founded in 1785 is home to the candystriped, hand-wound Elbow Cay Reef Lighthouse. This picturesque cay is a combination of local Bahamians many of whom descended from original settler Wyannie Malone second home owners and boaters. This quaint island is hopping with activities. In January, Hope Town is invaded by artists who paint their way through the lovely cay, culminating in a showing of the local scenes. During the winter months, Hope Town Sailing Club runs a series of invitational races – all are invited and each race series end with an awards ceremony at the Hope Town Sailing Club. February is full of events - the Writer’s Read the local Writer’s circle meets at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge for their official dinner & reading of selected material. Hope Town Fire & Rescue hosts an annual fair that is not to be missed. Local foods, popular Bahamian games like soldier crab racing and hoopla plus a luxury raffle drawing are all a part of the allday event. This fair is for a great cause and brings the whole island out and includes displays of safety and emergency techniques. The Wyannie Malone Historic Museum is open to visitors daily throughout the year depending on the volunteer base but in March the annual Heritage Festival is a cultural, historic and food event that attracts visitors from all corners of the world! April on Elbow Cay offers many church activities focusing on Easter celebrations including sunrise services at St. James Methodist Church. One special non-religious event is the Easter Sunday candy hunt. Children of all
ages are invited to hunt for hidden candy and one very special golden egg. The third weekend in April begins the Abaco Anglers annual fishing tournament. In its 45th year, the event is family oriented and includes lots of categories including hand line fishing & juniors. Easter Monday is a holiday in The Bahamas and also a fund raising Abaco Rage party. The Bahamian sloop is tied up along the post office dock where tents of food, games and souvenir sales are filled with visitors and locals alike. The great fishing continues into May with several annual tournaments in the area. Summer is a great time to be in Hope Town as there are many families and lots of impromptu activities at the many parks including the playground at Jarret Park, the basketball court, soccer field and community swimming pool at Taylor Park. Regatta Time in Abaco (RTIA) holds the final celebration party on July 10th at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge with racing in the area from July 2nd. Lots of activities make RTIA a great time Destination Abaco 83
to plan a visit. Halloween in Hope Town is great for children and adults. Trick or treating for the costumed kiddies on the no vehicle village lanes is popular and costume parties with prizes for the adults are held at several local pubs. The Hope Town Harbour Lodge hosts an art & craft show with wine and cheese the Friday after U.S. Thanksgiving. The Annual Box Car Derby is held the Saturday after U.S. Thanksgiving and is a great all-day event. Homemade race cars speed down Elbow Cay’s largest hill. Food is served from grills and assorted beverages including the famous ‘Swiggle’ booth – a local specialty drink of coconut milk and gin. Christmas season on the island of Elbow Cay is officially started with the lighting of the Lighthouse – long strands of tiny white lights are hung from the wrought-iron railing around the famous light and secured 120-feet below. The festive month is filled with singing cantatas, caroling followed by chicken souse, church plays, golf cart & boat parades and other special events. Every evening from 18th December is dedicated to an activity. New Year’s Eve is a perfect time to enjoy the quaint island beginning with junior

Man-O-War Cay “Celebrate with Man-O-War” by Kristen Pearce
W
hen one thinks of this small cay Man-O-War, nestled along the eastern shores of Great Abaco, what comes to mind is peace and tranquility and the opportunity to escape to a quieter, more gentle pace of life. However, this little cay has surprises in store as it is an island of people that love to celebrate and they know how to do it well. The island is home to only 350 Bahamians who are joined by approximately 135 foreigners, who choose to reside there ‘during the season’. However, on certain days in the calendar hundreds of people flock to this small cay for events for which it has become famous. A Flea Market, which is held every year in February, draws people from all over Abaco who greatly
look forward to it and come looking for “treasures”. This event, which is fun for both young and old, is a big fundraiser for the Man O War All Age School. Lots of tables are laid out displaying artwork, crafts, plants, books, jewelry, white elephant nic nacs and all kinds of native jams and jellies for sale. Children are kept occupied with a variety of games and there are even sojer crab races which are very entertaining and add excitement. Of course, no event in The Bahamas is complete without a good supply of down home cooking and there is plenty of food to satisfy the appetite including the ever popular conch salad. Special ferries are laid on to accommodate the many locals and visitors wishing to attend and the harbour fills up with sail boaters and the private boats of people visiting from the surrounding cays all gathering for what is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most anticipated events on Abaco. Another very interesting occasion is Man O War’s Heritage Day which is called ‘Sojer Day’. This day is set aside to celebrate the island’s heritage, its forefathers, traditions and culture. It gets its unusual name from the nickname of the Man O War natives who are known as ‘ Sojers’ after the hermit crabs which are prolific on the cay and look as though they are wearing a helmet or armour. Fascinating items are displayed in several of the interesting old homes which are still around depicting the era of parents and grandparents. Food, arts and crafts, and games all add to the enjoyment of the day. Anyone who happens to be on Abaco at Christmas time would enjoy
the Christmas morning programme held on the Man O War Cay volleyball court. People come from Marsh Harbour and the surrounding cays to gather with the ‘sojers’ to enjoy a hearty breakfast, sing carols and read scriptures. There is a tradition for the children to shout for Santa Claus at the top of their lungs. On the third shout he appears from over the hill to distribute goodies to all the kids present. Man O War Cay holds the biggest July 10 Independence celebration anywhere on Abaco. The festivities begin early in the morning and include track events such as egg and spoon races, sprints and distance races, ball throw and tug of war. These are followed by swimming races and diving competitions but the fun really begins later in the day with the adults only events. These include conch breaking, sawing wood and nail and hammer competitions, all leading up to the most exciting event of the day the famous greasy pole competition in which anyone can take pert. The idea is to make one’s way to the end of a very slippery pole to retrieve the flag at the end. A lot of cheering goes on and
92 Destination Abaco
there is much hilarity as one by one the contestants drop into the harbour waters. The celebration concludes at night with the presentation of awards followed by a magnificent fireworks display. A friendly softball match is also played between whoever shows up. On days when there are no special celebrations taking place, there are still some very interesting experiences not to be missed. Since Man O War Cay is known as ‘The Boat Building Capital of The Bahamas’ no visit would be complete without a stop at the Albury brothers’ two boat yards on the seafront road. Edwin’s boatyard #1 is the oldest in Abaco and has been in operation for fifty years. Originally the birthplace of sailing schooners it is now famous for its 20 foot and 23 foot Albury brothers fiberglass boats which are in high demand. Mr. Willard Albury and his two sons will be happy to give you a tour of the hangar where these boats are constructed. Across the road from the boatyard is the studio of master carpenter, Andy Albury. Mr. Albury is happy to welcome visitors and show you his exquisite mounted half boat models and rib models crafted from indigenous woods which are for sale. He is also famous for his wooden furniture, especially rocking chairs. You may like to take home a signature canvas bag for yourself or as a gift. The Albury’s Sail Shop is well worth a visit. There you can watch bags of all styles and uses, hats and jackets while they are being created from a durable canvas traditionally used for sails. The ladies will be happy to chat with you about their work and their island home while they sew.

Treasure Cay
“Welcome to Peaceful Treasure Cay” by Caniskha Alexander
A
radiant jewel emblazoned upon the backdrop of Abaco’s prominent settlements, Treasure Cay is considered home to many residents in the North including our second-homeowners. Of course, we can’t forget the visitors who frequent our shores to enjoy all things Bahamian. As we know, people are always looking for the perfect place to enjoy the best that life has to offer. Considered as a world-class destination, Treasure Cay never disappoint. From the Touch of Class restaurant to the renowned Spinnaker, Coco Beach Bar & Grill and the Tipsy Seagull Bar, food connoisseurs’ expectations are exceeded as they sample an array of delectable meals and drink specials that are not only affordably priced but are of the highest quality. Thursday nights have become more popular since the introduction of Pizza Night at Tipsy’s. Coco Beach Bar & Grill is perched right on the
water’s edge and provides weekly entertainment as well as kayak and banana boat rentals. Also a popular resort for islandstyled weddings, the Bahama Beach Club is known for creating an unforgettable, personable experience. The resort overlooks emerald green and aquamarine waters that fade into powdered sand home to one of the world’s most magnificent beaches. Event and catering services are also provided for those special moments. Among the aquatic amenities offered are scuba diving, snorkeling, diving, blue hole explorations, watersport rentals, fishing charters and ferry rides to the not so distant cays. For first-rate fishing, you’ve come to the right place. Anglers from all over the world travel to Treasure Cay in pursuit of coveted game fish and to explore the bonefish flats in the area. Every May, this small, coastal community hosts the Treasure Cay Billfish Championship that is complimented with a bonfire and Junkanoo parade.

Moreover, boaters are appreciative of the full service, 150-slip Treasure Cay Marina, which is able to accommodate yachts up to 140 feet. For more land-based activities, tennis and golf are highly rated. Treasure Cay boasts a top-notch 18-hole golf course designed by Dick Wilson and is rated among the best in The Bahamas. Bicycle and golf cart rentals allow for fascinating tours of the community. Although shopping is minimal, a small shopping center is located in the heart of Treasure Cay, and there are also stores that sell marine and dive equipment. Abaco Ceramics is the place to visit for uniquely handcrafted and personalized gifts. Safety is also an integral part of this close-knit community. It is equipped with a modern fire station and Corbett Medical Centre is a medical facility that houses state-of the-art medical equipment and services. It was recently updated to include an imaging center. The community of Treasure Cay also believes in giving back. The Treasure Cay Community 96 Destination Abaco
Center features an annual art show to benefit the students of Treasure Cay Primary, and this year, Anthony “Big Mo” Morley, a Bahamian artist, showcased his real-life acrylic paintings to assist the students . Additionally, an annual North Abaco Christmas Celebration is generally held at Treasure Cay Primary School during the holidays. Earlier this year, Every Child Counts held a fundraiser and silent auction event at the Spinnaker Restaurant in January to raise funds that greatly assisted the school. Without a doubt, Treasure Cay is an undeniably compelling place to visit as it intertwines a variety of activities and events for everyone of all ages to enjoy. And don’t forget that as you start to wind down for an evening of romantic moments and relaxation, take a glance out at the ocean. You may just catch a glimpse of the mysterious green flash that extends a brilliant band of green light across the horizon at sunset, a natural phenomenon that is known to occur all over The Bahamas.

Great Guana Cay “Fun on Guana Cay” By Jennifer Hudson
I
n the words of a frequent visitor to Abaco; “Great Guana Cay is all about fun.” It is the largest of all the Abaco Cays and while many enjoy the relaxed, laid back atmosphere and the opportunity to dive, snorkel and sunbathe along an incredibly beautiful seven mile stretch of beach there are those who love Guana for its fun side. The world famous Nippers Beach Bar and Grill is one of the most colorful and best situated dining and drinking establishments in The Bahamas. From its upper level the Sea of Abaco and Atlantic Ocean can both be seen at the same time and it is a view not to be missed. Nippers attracts thousands of visitors and locals year after year who come for its live entertainment, tasty Bahamian food, party atmosphere and signature drink, ‘Nipper Juice’, which comes fully loaded ! If you would like to sample some of Abaco’s famous wild boar then Nippers is the place to be every Sunday lunch time. The Nipper’s wild boar roast is a very popular and lively weekly event. Two huge attractions on Guana Cay each year are the Barefoot Man Concerts. These take place at Nippers and are held during Spring Break in March and during the Abaco Sailing Regatta in July. The Barefoot Man (George Novak) is the Caribbean’s answer to Jimmy Buffet and his fun loving humour and lively calypso reggae beat make him a favourite with both Bahamians and visitors. Each of his free concerts, which begin at noon and party on until sunset, draws as many as 2,000 fans, and boats line the water’s edge as admirers come from far and wide. George is accompanied by his own duo ‘Sea n, B’ (Chuck 100 Destination Abaco
and Barrie), with locals Stone McEwan and Brown Tip also contributing their unique musical styles during the day. Invitations for these concerts go up 2-3 months in advance and many people plan their vacations around them, returning year after year. Two other very popular places for fun gatherings are the tiki bar at Pirate’s Cove and Grabbers bar and restaurant. If you are on Guana Cay the weekend before Christmas then do not miss the Fig Tree lighting ceremony. The fig tree on the Harbour road is a landmark on the cay as everyone passes it as they enter Guana from the ferry dock. Residents decided last Christmas to decorate the tree with lights and hold a lighting ceremony at which locals and visitors could get together to enjoy the spirit of the season while having a good time singing carols, playing games and eating delicious Bahamian foods. It was such a success that it will be a yearly event from now on.

Green Turtle Cay “Green Turt le Cay certainly has a reason to celebrate! “ by Kristen Pearce
T
he island is filled with an abundant history, being one of the earliest settlements on Abaco. Many Pirates used its two harbours as a hiding place during the 17th and 18th centuries. The current settlement of New Plymouth was founded in 1784 and has deep African and Loyalist roots. During the 19th century, it was considered the largest city in Abaco because it was the home of many large industries, including the pineapple, wrecking, bootlegging, and shark fishing industries. Also, during this time, many of the residents moved to Key West, making the two islands Sister Islands in 1977. All throughout the year, there are many celebrations and events for
locals and tourists alike to take part in. Summertime is the peak time to visit Green Turtle Cay. Not only is it during these months that the cay is filled with activities and parties, the weather is perfect for a relaxing vacation or day trip to the cay. At the beginning of July, the thirty-second annual ‘Regatta Time in Abaco’ will take place. The event is always held between the American Independence Day and the Bahamian Independence Day, linking the two events. Each year, dozens of sailing enthusiasts, with mostly American sloops, participate in an exciting racing series throughout the Abacos. This year, the festivities begin at Fiddle Cay on July 2nd with ‘Fiddle Cay Party,’ also known as the “Stranded Naked Party” because it is hosted by ‘Stranded Naked’ Sportswear. On July 3rd, the sailboat races begin in Green Turtle Cay, with a party, awards ceremony, Junkanoo, and live music afterwards at Settlement Point. The festivities then move on to Treasure Cay and other southern settlements. The next few months are reasonably quiet ones on the island. However,

a trip to Green Turtle Cay can still be filled with fun, beaching, and site seeing. The island is filled with many glorious beaches, places to tour, site see, and shop. There are even museums located in the settlement, where the history and heritage is celebrated and brought to life for those that visit. In November, Green Turtle Cay annually puts on a ‘Guy Fawkes’ Celebration. This celebration stems from the English ‘Gunpowder Plot’ in 1605. This plot intended to blow up the English Parliament and King James I on the day of the opening of the Parliament, November 5th. The plan was revealed and led to the arrest of Guy Fawkes, and the Parliament opened as planned. November 5th was then declared a day of thanksgiving for the ‘joyful day of deliverance’ by King James I. The celebration in Green Turtle Cay is always held on the Saturday closest to November 5th. The evening includes delicious food, beautiful fireworks, a hayride, and a bonfire. The main event of the evening is the ‘Guy’ Competition, where anyone can make their own ‘Guy’ that can be registered and judged for prices. Each ‘Guy’ is danced by their creator, and at the end of the evening thrown into the bonfire to be burned. This night is a fun time for the whole family. The island then begins celebrating the holidays at Thanksgiving. On November 25th, there is the annual Christmas Festival of Lights. There is a Thanksgiving Dinner and a stage program, and the night is ended with a Torchlight Procession. On the following day of November 26h, there will be a 104 Destination Abaco
Holiday Golf Cart and Jingle Bell Trot. There is a fantastic fireworks display, and many delicious soups are served. Hot chocolate is also served under the glow of Christmas Lights. A fun-filled family fair takes place the next day, November 27th. This event starts at noon, and includes a bouncing castle, clowns, arts and crafts, and various games and activities. The evening then winds down with delicious dinners that can be purchased. As Christmas gets closer and the Christmas spirit fills the island, Green Turtle Cay hosts a ‘Nite Boat Parade’ on December 11th. The parade route starts at Black Sound and continues through White Sound, Settlement Creek, and ends at Settlement point. Santa and his elves visit this festival, passing out gifts to the children. During this event, there is also Bunce, Hail’em Gal, and Junkanoo. The New Years Celebration is one of the island’s biggest celebrations. People travel from all over to attend. The island is transformed into a marketplace atmosphere, with food and arts and craft stalls set up throughout the settlement. The highlight of the day is when the Junkanoo parade takes place. Many participants dance with vibrant costumes and

instruments, such as drums, cowbells, and whistles. This parade then rushes around the settlement several times, ending with a big gathering at the basketball court. Another grand event that takes place in Green Turtle Cay is the ‘Island Roots Heritage Festival.’ This celebration usually takes place during the first weekend in May. It is during this event that the history and heritage of the island is really celebrated. The Festival spans over the whole weekend, and it offers great activities such as music, singing, a maypole, plays, face painting, games, comic shows, artifacts, souvenirs, the Royal Police Force Band, Junkanoo and wonderful Bahamian food. No matter what time of year, there is always a reason to celebrate in Green Turtle Cay.

2009/2010 Abaco Wins Not One but Three Cacique Awards By P.J. Watson
A Cacique is the highest honor awarded to Bahamians in the country’s number-one industry - tourism. Abaco competes against the entire 700 island nation. Resorts and hospitality specialists in Freeport (Grand Bahama), Bimini, Eleuthera, Exuma, San Salvador, Long Island, Cat Island and Nassau, vie against organizations and individuals in the trade with in Abaco. The lesser known Abaco, perhaps ‘under dog,’ won an astounding three awards including the coveted Minister’s Award for Hospitality – the top tribute bestowed on an individual in a country full of tourism professionals. For centuries throughout the Caribbean when the native Indians graciously hosted guests, they referred to their generous hospitality as extending cacique (Kah SEEK). Dating back to the days of the Lucayans, the first inhabitants of The Bahamas, cacique was demonstrated when the Indians welcomed the first Europeans. The finest foods, handmade gifts and local knowledge of indigenous plants and animals were readily given to the visitors. Columbus wrote many entries in his Captain’s logs referencing the kind, gentle and welcoming inhabitants of The Bahamas Islands. Hundreds of years later, Columbus’ description still rings true! Cacique is now used to recognize the ‘best of the best’ throughout The Bahamas. Awards are given for performance (or products) of individuals or organizations that continually make a positive impact on the quality and growth of tourism in The Bahamas. Established in 1995, the Cacique awards are a much anticipated annual event. Nominees are chosen and supported by testimonials, samples of their wares and reports on their worthiness. As a tribute to the Indian history of cacique, the award itself is patterned after the Lucayan chief’s seat of power called the duho. A replica of the duho - an ornately carved wooden throne used when holding official meetings or ceremonies - sits on top of each cacique trophy. Abaco boasts many cacique award nominees and this year, amazingly, three top winners. An anonymous committee carefully analyzes all the country’s candidates, and after much deliberation selects the top in each category. A televised night of festivities held at the world-renowned Atlantis in Nassau celebrates with music, theatrical presentations, tributes and finally the big announcements. Glender Knowles won in the transportation department. Knowles bus service holds the highest standards in caring Destination Abaco 107
for the passengers while emphasizing both efficiency and education. Knowles works with many school age children from throughout The Bahamas who come to Abaco with their classes. Knowles is Abaco’s first comprehensive tour operator who credits her success with her love of Abaco. The bus service is used for other groups and Glender has driven from the northern tip to the southern lands end, sharing Abaco’s beaches, pine forest, fauna & flora with the country and the world. Steve Dodge was awarded a cacique in the creative arts division for his contribution to the Bahamas with multiple publications including The History of an Out Island and its Cays, A Guide and History of Hope Town (he credits Vernon & Barbara Malone as well as wife, for help with this book). Dodge supervised the publication of The Bahamas Index from 1986 to 2002 - a newspaper index of essays, events & interviews pertinent to the country’s history. But the publication that brings him his claim to fame in Abaco is the highly successful, Cruising Guide to the Abacos. So far twenty-one annual editions have shared aerial photographs, local knowledge, emergency procedures and most importantly nautical charts said to be more accurate than American or Bahamian Government charts. Dodge has the charts drawn based on hydrographic research and most boats visiting the Abacos have the book on board as their ultimate Abaco guide. Peggy Thompson is the epitome of cacique with her “can-do, will help” attitude and her love of the Abacos. Over twenty years ago, she and her husband Chris began with four villas and 12 marina slips and now own & operate Hope Town Hideaways (rentals & sales) sharing close to 100 private homes with visitors from around the world. Over the years the friendships forged and the bonds created between Peggy and her guests have made Hope Town Hideaways the highest repeat client rental agencies in the country. The Bahamas top award, The Minister of Tourism’s cacique, was bestowed on Peggy Thompson acknowledging her dedication to the visitors of the Abacos and her example of enthusiastic hospitality. Abaco can boast three of the “Best of the Best” in The Bahamas for 2009/2010 but according to the Abaco Tourist office, other winners over the years include: Diane Claridge Balcomb - Eco Tourism, Alton Lowe Creative Arts, Verturm Lowe - Hanidcraft, Brendal Stevens - Sustainable Tourism, Raymond Lowe - Supervisor of the year, Lynn Johnson - Hotel Manager of the year, Pete Johnston - Creative Arts, Avis Miller - Hotel Manager of the year, Debbie Symonette - Employee of the Year, Ron & Erin Pagliaro - Eco Tourism, Joe Albury - Handicraft, Green Turtle Ferry (Floyd Lowe)–Transportation, Annie Albury - Sail Shop Handicraft, Dave & Kathy Ralph - (Regatta Time) - Sports & Leisure, Glender Knowles –Transportation, Peggy Thompson -The Minister of Tourism’s Award, Steve Dodge - Creative Writing. The Abacos are a special place filled with unique people in a country known for its extraordinary welcoming hospitality. The people of Abaco are all about ‘cacique’ and whether recipients of the coveted duho or not, they welcome visitors with open arms and hearts to their island home much as the Lucayans did when greeting the first visitors to Bahamian shores so many years ago.

years ago by yachtsman Charlie Murphy, who was then a regular visitor to the Abacos. Through the years the RMHYC has grown to over 1800 members and includes mates from all over the world. The purpose of the Yacht Club is to provide fellowship, information and support services for cruisers, landholders and others who enjoy visits and extended stays in the environs of the “Hub of Abaco Bahamas” As a service to the community, the RMHYC has built and maintains the floating dinghy dock at the Government Union Jack Dock in Marsh Harbour. It has purchased and installed two red and two green channel markers in the harbour for all boaters to use and has provided lights on them for night vision as an added safety feature. The RMHYC is more active in the winter & spring months as more members are present then. It has a very active social life with many functions throughout the year for all of their members as well as reciprocity for card carrying yacht club members from other yacht clubs. The RMHYC also has chapters in the United States and Canada. These are located in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl; Palm Beach Gardens, Fl; Daytona, Fl; Baltimore, Md; and Nova Scotia, in Canada. Anyone interested in learning more about the yacht club can check it out at its website: www. RMHYC.com. Immigration
