Welcome to Abaco It is with pleasure that the Ministry of Tourism, Abaco recognizes the outstanding work of the local "Destination Abaco" magazine. The producers are congratulated for a continued demonstration of consistency in producing accurate information, as well as general knowledge, interesting and useful to visitors traveling to the Abacos. As a guide book, many tourists' related essentials and services are listed for easy reference. Advertisements are also tastefully placed, giving visiting consumers more details on a wide range of related product items and activities, to assist in enhancing the vacation experience. We take this opportunity to encourage visitors to the Abacos to take a closer look at our multi-community destination which is so rich in history, marine and terrestrial wonders. Be sure to visit one of the world's ten best beaches at Treasure Cay; tour Ark Wild's "Wild Horses" Preserve and have a special encounter with a small herd of "Spanish Barbs," DNA tested for proof of authenticity. And while you are at it, ask your guide about the colourful and unique, Abaco Parrot tour or a spectacular kayaking trip through the lush mangroves while viewing the interesting bird life and natural ecology. Snorkeling or scuba diving one of the largest barrier reefs in the world is also a must, or if you care for even more of this kind of adventure, contact a specialty dive operator and explore an inland ocean hole or underwater cave-systems. The Abacos provide "island hopping" excursions that are second to none and a value added privilege to all visitors wanting to experience the natural pleasures of the "real Bahamas" on one visit. So, from doing absolutely nothing to nature-based soft adventures, we are pleased to invite you to fully participate. If for any reason you may need to know a bit more than you will find in this guide, please feel free to visit our office located in the Memorial Plaza, Marsh Harbour, write to us at jeritzan@batelnet.bs or contact us at (242) 367-3067.

Hidden Paradise Exploring the North Abaco Cays
by Erik J. Russell
Flung across the remote northern Bahamas are a string of pearl islands that few know about. But, those that do know of this nearly hidden paradise, treasure it for its eternal beauty, its abundant resources and its inviting climate. They are perched atop the Little Bahama Bank, about 60 miles northeast of Freeport, Grand Bahama, and 130 miles east of the Florida coast. This group of islands include the two most developed in the area, Walker's Cay and Grand Cay, as well as dozens of small uninhabited rocks, cays (from the Spanish "cayos" meaning "string of islands" pronounced "keys") and islets such as Carter and Romer's Cays, Great Sale Cay, Stranger's Cay, and the jewel of them all, Double Breasted Cay. Mariners coming from Florida usually make West End, Grand Bahama, their first stop for refueling and replenishing. They will then head northeast paralleling the north coast of Grand Bahama towards the large but essentially barren Mangrove Cay, then on to Great Sale Cay; the adventurous few take a track further north towards Walker's Cay and its beautiful neighbours. These little gems are well situated as a glorious escape for vacationers, fishermen and sailors willing to take the "road less traveled" and discover what many sadly miss. Boaters traveling west from mainland Abaco can easily follow the near-continuous chain of cays that runs from the northwest tip of Little Abaco through this inviting out-of-theway sanctuary.
Walker’s Cay
Walker's Cay is perhaps the best known island in this area. It was once the hub of all activity with its marina and small resort, restau rant, world-renowned shark dive operation, an airstrip, and thriving clown fish farm. Unfortunately, today the island is deserted, with none of these former amenities operational. Damage by severe weather has made it impractical to continue operations. The shark diving in the area is still a big attraction given the plentiful reefs and abundant marine life. Adventurous divers can see up to 100 Caribbean reef sharks, blacktips and nurse sharks tussle for dominance there. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but many cannot resist the draw of sharing space with these fascinating and frightening creatures. Walker's Cay loss has been Grand Cay's gain. Just southeast of the now-quiet Walker's is a thriving - if this term can indeed be applied to a small fishing community!-settlement that has recently seen steady growth. Grand Cay (latitude 27.22N, longitude 78.3W) has hundreds of local residents, most of them living off the sea or involved in some local work at shops, restaurants or the Government school. There is a "Club Med' but don't expect something related to the Club Meds you may think of! This "Club Med" consists of around 10 rooms a stone's throw from the busy fishing docks and a small fish pen and top-side bar. Nearby, Rosie's Place is often considered the center of action for the community. Rosie Curry, an imposing but quiet and friendly man, owns and oversees a small motel, restaurant, gift shop, hardware store, fuel and ice dock, and fish weighing and storage facility.
Grand Cay
Destination Abaco 13
The air conditioned motel rooms are small but very well kept; some have double or queen-sized beds with large closets and shower-equipped bathrooms. Rates are moderate. The on-property restaurant features a full complement of Bahamian and American dishes-don't miss the locally caught crawfish (lobster) when it is in season and the crispy fried chicken is a sure hit! Portions are generous and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. Boat owners should be sure to plan ahead to reserve dockage. The marina at Rosie's Place is often full and there can be some jockeying for space. Holiday weekends (U.S. and Bahamian) are particularly busy so don't leave travels plans until the last minute if you are hoping to dock there. While Grand Cay is not an affluent community, the people are resilient and peculiarly proud of their northern outpost. They are politically passionate and committed to celebrating at every opportunity-whether it is Bahamian or American independence, Easter, or just another Friday night-you will always know where the party is by following the fireworks, the music and the food.
Exploring the surroundings While Walker's Cay and Grand Cay can be considered the necessary places for fuel, ice, food and a comfortable place to stay and restock, one should never visit this area without planning to focus a major portion of your time discovering the network of inviting cays surrounding them, including the expansive secluded beaches on the "back side" of Great Grand Cay. These beaches are stunning crescents of powdery sand that fade gradually into the clear and calm water, sheltered from all but the strongest northerly winds. The area is called Ablanalp's Beach (sometimes misstated as "Applenath's" Beach), after the one-time multi-millionaire owner of the 120acre estate on the island. The vicinity was once patrolled by armed secret service agents that protected former U.S. President Richard Nixon, who often stayed at the custom-built "white house" balanced on one of the island's hilltops. Careful explorers may still find warning signs near the beach's edge threatening penalty for those that venture too far. North of Ablanalp Beach is fascinating little Seal Cay. Sitting just southeast of Walker's Cay, Seal Cay is rocky at both ends but with a welcoming sandy point and deep beach. Make sure Seal Cay is at the top of the "must see" list of stops. Seal Cay possesses a unique combination of wildlife, natural rock formations and beauty that is uncommon for such a small isle. The southern shore is decorated with a generous garland of bright, powdery sand, with a distinctive sand bar jutting to the sea. Despite a few collections of small rocks just offshore, the sandy side is welcoming to pleasure craft; those with drafts over four feet should be careful to hug the east side of the sand bar. A rocky ridge dissects the cay, with a line of coconut trees and tufts of bright green vegetation. To the west end, the ridge extends out and up from the water, creating a fantastic display of crashing waves and sea spray on windy days and when a swell is coming in from the north. 14 Destination Abaco
Seal Cay
The rocky alter-ego of the island at first seems barren of life. But a careful explorer will discover hundreds of shallow pools among the jagged razor-rocks, many of them with living mollusks and, nearer the sea, tiny fish. Birds are another abundant inhabitant. Royal terns-with their regal black faces-and an unidentified gangly bird with a long orange beak, dark green neck, white body and a grating squawk seem to be full-time residents there. At certain times of year, the royal terns will swoop close as you pass through the boulders that are more plentiful at the cay's peak. At first the birds seem simply playful or curious but they grow more aggressive as you move about. The reason becomes quite clear if you stop at almost any boulder, get low to the ground and peek into one of the crevasses. The birds use these boulders as ground shelters for their eggs and a lucky traveler may see the spotted treasures hidden almost out of view. Stick around too long and the protective adult terns just may make unwelcome contact with you! The undisputable highlight of Seal Cay is a natural rock formation that includes a large open-topped grotto about 30-feet across and a towering natural rock bridge that is open at the bottom where ocean waves crash into the secluded cove. On days when the sea is rough it can be a dramatic-almost frighteningscene, when the swells build up and collide with the shore, forcing their way through the small opening below the bridge. On calm days the sandy bottom of the rocky opening is an excellent place to gather conch and other shells, stones and drift wood that have been smoothed by the constant buffeting of the surf. Visitors to the isolated spot should take care to avoid being drawn out by the swift and powerful rip current.
Double Breasted Cay The "crown jewel" of the chain of cays is without a doubt Double Breasted Cay (sometimes called "Double Breaster"), sitting at latitude 27.2N and longitude 78.27W. Though uninhabited, it is among the most visited of all the north Abaco cays, a requisite stopover for pleasure boaters and serious fisherman alike. The cay is blessed with a strip of rocky islets sitting sufficiently offshore to create a protective lee from ocean swells. Tide flows rapidly through the channel at the peak of its ebb and flow, so much so that a boat captain failing to pay close attention to its effects can end up leaving behind a strip of paint on the rocks-or worse. But the channel itself provides surprisingly generous depth for a wide range of vessels. And this feature has been such a well-known attribute of Double Breasted Cay that even a 1834 chart of the area says "though rather intricate this is a perfectly safe channel for entering on the Bahama Bank if the vessel draws no more than 12 ft". Fortunately, the channel comes so close to shore that larger boats can sit close enough to offload people and supplies and still keep engines running. Double Breasted Cay is low-lying with an ample beach rising out of the broad sand bank to the southeast. Scattered shrubs and sea grape trees make up the sparse vegetation. Crabs and curly tail Destination Abaco 15
lizards can often be seen darting about the sea grasses and foraging for food. Those wishing to camp onshore will find large enough open areas to pitch tents and adequate covering inland for those "necessary alone moments" when nature calls. The previously mentioned sand bank is one of two "key features" of this island. It stretches out for hundreds of yards offshore and lays out of water at low tide, revealing a trove of shells, sand dollars and other sea treasures. Often, a bonefish boat will skirt the outer edges of the bank, attracting gulls to the area. The other key feature: sunsets! Unless there is heavy cloud cover, Double Breasted Cay has VIP front row seats to the daily sunset-and sunrise!-show. It is perfectly situated to see both in all their glory.
Romer’s & Stranger’s Cay Other nearby cays of note are Romer's and Stranger's Cays, which surround fertile conch grounds and fishing areas. Reefs and shoals nearby make for excellent spearing opportunities (Hawaiian slingtype spears are the only kind allowed in the Bahamas) and the sharp ocean drop-off to the northeast is favourable for rod fishing. Romer's (and its close sibling "Little Romer's") and Stranger's Cays can also be considered as alternative campsites if Double Breasted Cay is overcrowded.Take time to explore all around these cays and you will find nearly hidden lagoons and interesting rock outcroppings.
Carter Cay
One more worthwhile stop in this area is Carter Cay. Larger and more protected from rough weather than some of its neighbours, Carter Cay was once the home of an active U.S. Air Force Missile Tracking Station. Some of the buildings remain there, while others are just rusted steel ribs jutting up through the undergrowth. The remains of the satellite dish and radar enclosure mounts sit atop the island's highest point. It is well worth the trek through the bush and up the ragged pathway. Besides a taste of nostalgia, the 360° view of the island and its surroundings is breathtaking. All in all, a visit to the north Abaco cays is well worth the trip. Whether you are traveling from the United States, Grand Bahama or Abaco, you will find unique experiences and wonderful memories waiting to be discovered.
Hurricane Update Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne struck many islands in the northern Bahamas in September 2004, particularly Abaco and Grand Bahama. The north Abaco cays were no exception. While the majority of the uninhabited cays remain the same for the most part, aside from reduced vegetation and beach erosion, the inhabited islands suffered extensive damage to homes and businesses.Work is constantly being carried out to restore the infrastructure in Grand Cay and Walker's Cay, with significant progress expected by December. It is recommended that travelers to the area call ahead to confirm available facilities.

Dueling Sloops& the Party Parade The 29th Regatta Time in Abaco 2004 By Rebecca Burg - South Winds Magazine
T
he translucent, jade-green Abaco Sea glittered in the fading light of an electric sunset. Immersed in the serenity of the moment, a cluster of anchored sailboats gently rocked as a nearly full moon slowly rose overhead. A warm breeze rustled through palms onshore. The world hushed for the night. Tomorrow, these sailboats and their crews would begin nine days of wild action, adventure and seemingly endless merriment in the exquisite tropi-
cal setting of the Abacos. The 29th Annual Regatta Time in Abaco began on July 2nd and was an irresistible source of fun for visitors and local families alike. "There's more parties than races!" A sailor cheerfully observed during one of the many social gatherings that the regatta offered. Bobb Henderson's pre-race party allowed everyone to mingle and gear up for the action ahead. Children giggled and played in the soft white sand

and crews swapped stories from the previous year's races over barbecue and picnic food. New to the regatta, I had the pleasure of meeting locals like Mary Lou from Man-OWar. Calm and easy-going, Mary and every other Bahamian I'd met handily proved Abaco's reputation for being relaxed and exceptionally friendly. "Angel!" said a nicelydressed local gal I'd bumped into during the party. "How did your sailboat get the name Angel?" I shrugged and said, "The sails are like wings." The gal smiled. "My name is Angel!" We both laughed. HOOONK. The massive Duke of Topsail sounded her horn as she steamed along the race course's first leg. Like a flock of startled birds, sailboats scattered, fleeing from the frieghter's path while still competing with each other. Honking one last time for good measure, Duke harmlessly continued toward Marsh Harbour. By now, all four categories of race participants had charged over the start and were spreading over the playing field. Dozens of multi-hued sails and slick hulls flashed in the sun in a silent and most elegant waltz of wind-driven speed. The action was

intense. In the rather serious PHRF categories, swift racers Contrails and Xtreme wrangled around the buoy so closely that they appeared to be hip-towing each other. Flying along at warp speed in the multihull category, trimarans Adios! and Bad Boys aggressively pursued each other in a flurry of salt spray and rippling sails. Less hyper was the luxurious 55' catamaran Rocketeer, that turned heads everytime she employed that massive, vivid red spinnaker. The two Bahamian sloops in the regatta, local superstar Abaco Rage and Chris Thompson's svelte 21' Lonesome Dove, graced the cruising categories. Visiting cruising sailors, many with modern hulls and the latest in gear, were positively impressed by the superb performance of the traditional Bahamian built craft and their crews. Rage and Dove maintained top placement in their categories throughout the race series. Simply stated, these two sloops kicked some serious sailboat butt. The regatta's unstuffy nature also attracted cruising boats that normally don't race. Beautiful and timeless classics such as Arita, a 47' Alden, and Robert Alexander, a 53' wooden Trumpy, ruffled each other's sails in a closely matched contest. Shouts could be heard as Alexander discovered that Arita was closing in behind. "Let the sheet go." The big Trumpy tacked. "Haul Away!" The two boats were now side by side. Arita's crew hoisted the rippling mizzen sail and she surged forward. The pressure was on. Later, nearing the finish line, Robert Alexander slipped ahead, her crewman Bobb calmly cooking burgers on the stern mounted grill. He waggled the spatula in the air. "Cheeseburger anyone?" During the week a series of five races were held in various locations over the Abaco Sea. Boats won awards after each race and the prizes were original works of art by renowned local artist, Pete Johnston. When not racing, sailors and their families had a chance to sightsee and explore each cay. Daily parties were held at different establishments, providing visitors with a true taste of Bahamian culture and life. Many regatta participants come every year. "It doesn't get better than the Bahamas," said Walt Adams, who has enjoyed 17 years of racing onboard Rookey and on his own boat. Cruising with his wife and grandson, Jim Miller of Sea Turtle is a 12-year Abaco Regatta veteran. New faces, like Bill Photo by Dave Ralph Robinson, had so much fun Party at Nippers - Guana Cay that he's planning to come every year to race his sailboat and socialize with the new friends he has made. The final race and awards party was held on July 10. The balmy tropical night was concluded with fireworks popping over Marsh Harbour as everyone celebrated the Bahamian Independence Day. The 30th Regatta Time in Abaco is just around the corner. We'll see you there!

TIPS FOR SUNBURN CARING FOR YOUR SUNBURN What to do Take a cool shower or bath or place wet, cold wash rags on the burn. Encourage plenty of fluids to limit the possibility of dehydration. If blisters are present, dry bandages may help prevent infection. If your skin is not blistering, moisturizing cream may be applied to relieve discomfort. Over-the-counter medications, like ibuprofen, may help to relieve pain from sunburn.
Get immediate attention if: Signs of dehydration or heatstroke occur, including fainting, unwillingness to take fluids or decreased urination. The blisters are oozing pus-like fluid or have other signs of infection. Next time, use plenty of waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.

Real Estate & Investing Making Abaco Your Global Home
by Richard Fawkes
T
he singer Scott McKenzie, in a song of welcome to people from across the United States - indeed the world attending the Monterrey Pop Festival a little ways down the California coast from San Francisco in 1968, informed his invitees, "When you go to San Francisco, be sure to wear a flower in your hair; when you go to San Francisco, you'll find some gentle people there." You might ask, "What does onehit wonder Scott McKenzie's hippie appeal for San Francisco way back in 1968 have to do with inviting people from around the world to invest in a home in 2005 and spend some of the most precious moments of the rest of their lives in idyllic Abaco in the warm Atlantic over 3,000 miles away from coldPacific San Francisco?" After all, Scott McKenzie, a good friend of John Phillips, founder of the Mamas and Papas who named his daughter Mckenzie Phillips after the
singer, was only blowing his trumpet for the age of "sex, drugs, and rock music," as some would say. But listen a little more intently and you will hear McKenzie's hippie call heralding a new age of global dwellers in search of peace and beauty, of people coming from everywhere to make special places their home. San Francisco, despite its earthquake fault lines and seismic rumbles from time to time, remains a magnet for those who would call a beautiful place home for a time. Abaco too, despite its location in the path of hurricanes, some of which may strike from time to time as Frances and Jeanne did last fall, became since McKenzie's anthem, and remains a place high on the list where quality of life in terms of tranquility, natural beauty, friendly people - or did Scott say gentle? - and seclusion, seclusion, seclusion is at a premium. As for flowers in your hair, well, they're just everywhere.

This island chain in the northern Bahamas, situated 130 miles east of West Palm Beach, Florida, entered modern history in the late 1700's as a refuge for persons fleeing the turmoil of the American Revolution and its aftermath. Today, Abaco and its cays beckon people the world over in search of a sound investment in a second or vacation home, where they can retreat from the cold of winter or the hectic pace of first-world civilization.
A Paradise Deserving Loyalty Shortly after Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne last fall, Americans Adam Lawrence and Jeep Byers, homeowners in Hopetown on Elbow Cay, were expressing that Abaconian spirit of resilience by looking into the government's duty-free policy for importing building materials to repair their homes. While Adam, who spends about 10 months of the year in Abaco, was hoping for an "El Ni単o," the mysterious Pacific Ocean current that appears from time to time and keeps hurricanes in the Atlantic at bay for years at a stretch, he did not

have the slightest intention of ending his five-year relationship with this paradise. Jeep Byers, an artist whose work is sold at Wrackers gift shop at Abaco Beach Resort, has an even longer perspective. He recovered from Floyd in 1999. Jeep, who has owned a home in Hopetown for twenty years says, "Hey look, I went 13 years without a hurricane." The fact is that a large percentage of people who have bought "second" homes in Abaco, have been coming to enjoy their paradise for 30 years or more, and now the second or third generation is now continuing the relationship.

So what's the magic? First of all, Abaconians are loyal to the international homeowner investor. They welcome you; they cater to you in the way you want to be catered to; and they leave you to your own devices and desires in how you want to enjoy your private Shrangrila. Abaconians have woven the investments and services attached to international home ownership into the stability of their economy and therefore have a serious vested interest in your contentment. Abaco builders, among whom may found craftsmen second to none, benefit from the construction of your home, should you choose that route. Abaco real estate sales people, who boast a community of seasoned professionals ready to give you sound advice and top-notch service, have an interest in meeting your investment needs with integrity. The restaurateurs, transportation professionals, fishermen, caretakers, grocers, and retail merchants are all tuned into your needs to make those areas of your stay that require their attention and services pleasant and memorable. Whether you invest in that "cottage" by the sea on a secluded cay or a condominium in Treasure Cay with its "one of the ten best" beaches in the world,or build that luxury dream home barely visible among the vegetation in
still virgin land somewhere in this still largely untouched island - it is for you to decide how much seclusion or community you want. Abaconians will not intrude on your decision to enjoy a community of one, or of one couple, one family, or a group of friends to stay at home or carouse at Pete's Pub or Sapodilly's; to beat your own path to nature's pleasures, or partake of the professional diving or kayaking or fishing services offered the length and breadth of the Abaco chain.

Abaco's Amenities Abaco, with its necklace of cays and rocks, has just enough of the amenities of civilization to make an international sophisticate comfortable while remaining close enough to "natural" to provide an invigorating escape from the trappings of urbanity.
Some of Nature's Gifts & Outdoor Fun The island is considered the boating capital of The Bahamas with dozens of full-service marinas, boat rental facilities, and fishing guides for fly fishing and deep-sea fishing. If you love or wish to adventure into scuba diving or snorkeling or kayaking, Abaco also has at your disposal any number of dive operators and instructors. The Abaco chain also is home to several protected sea parks and reefs. Two of Abaco's greatest treasures are the Abaco Parrot and its wild horses descended from Spanish Barbs. Each of these protected species has a preserve, which are a delight to visit. Abaco also is home to a great variety of birds and maintains one of the largest forests of the unique Caribbean Pine, which we are pleased to protect for your enjoyment and that of future generations.
Transportation At least a dozen airlines out of West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami serve Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay on a daily basis to enable convenient connections from throughout the continental United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe - the world.
Bahamasair also provides daily flights through Nassau to allow international connections through that hub. Abaco has a paved highway the length of its 120 miles. There is regular ferry service to the major cays, such as Hopetown, Man O'War, Great Guana, and Green Turtle. There is no shortage of taxi service from the airports or ferries, and there are several car rental companies serving the community.
Utilities & Communication Homeowners or builders of new homes will have access to water or electricity in just about any part of the chain. Abaco enjoys full-service telephone and fax service to the world. The island also has several high-speed internet services, including wireless in many locations and cable and satellite television services. There is also a local radio station and three newspapers.
Education Every town or "settlement" in Abaco has a public primary school staffed by certified teachers. There are also two public high schools on the island. In addition, there are four major private schools in the Marsh Harbour area, two of which offer pre-school through 12th grade. There are also a number of church-related pre-schools regulated by government. The high schools offer a college prep curriculum according to the government's Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) syllabi.

Healthcare Every major township in Abaco and the cays has a government clinic staffed by a medical doctor and at least one trained nurse. In addition, there is a private clinic in Treasure Cay, and three in Marsh Harbour. One of the Marsh Harbour clinics brings in specialists ranging from heart to pediatrics to gynecology to orthopedics and neurology, and boasts a state-of-the art laboratory and an x-ray lab. There is a local ambulance service and several air ambulance services available for off island medical evacuation. Abaconians are also sensitive to the care of pets. There is a highly qualified resident veterinarian and a humane society on the island.
Security and Safety While Abaconians strive for a high quality of life free of crime, good sense and practicality in a diverse community that welcomes the world has led the government to provide a professional police presence in all major towns. There are also several highly competent volunteer fire departments on the island. Abaconians, the true flowers of this island of wild orchids and untamed parrots, wait to welcome you with a garland of open arms and a reserve of quiet respect.

This is her second time working in the Abacos. From 1993 to 1996 she was posted at Treasure Cay and returned to Marsh Harbour in 1999. Known as being versatile in her art forms, she paints using many different techniques and mediums including acrylics, pastels, pen and ink. She recently returned from Costa Rica where she studied collages and painting from nature - a form of stencil painting but using leaves. In addition to canvas, her work can be seen on floor cloths, light switches, greeting cards, bags and hand painted eggs. Her other interests include photography, ceramics, jewelry making, sewing, interior decorating and design and cartooning. Colette says painting and drawing take her to another level. She started painting to occupy her spare time and now it is more than a hobby, it’s more like an investment. She says being a Customs Officer is not an easy job so when she wants to unwind she picks up a Destination Abaco 37

Abaco’s Lighthouses Built in 1836, Hole-In-The-Wall lighthouse’s old mechanism has been dismantled and the light is now automated. The Elbow Cay Lighthouse is probably the most recognizable landmark in the Abacos.
This 89 ft. candy-striped figure was built in 1863 and is one of three hand-wound kerosene burning lighthouses left in the world and is worth the viewing.
Bonefishing Enjoy a day of fishing on the "Marls", Abaco's less explored western side. The Marls, considered the world's best bonefish destination, consists of 400 square miles of pristine flats teeming with trophy size bonefish. One of the local bone fishermen will happily guide you to Abaco's "Wide Open Spaces."

What to do three independent DNA analyses, the horses were designated a sub breed of the critically endangered Spanish Barb by the Horse of the American's Registry. Abaco was the curator of possibly the purest strain of the "Horse of the Conquest" in existence. In the 1960's the herd, nearly 200 strong was reduced to three horses. By 1992 the horses were up to 35, but today there are only 13 horses in the herd. Since 1999 there have been no foals. Research indicated that the horses should be returned to their original forest home. To assist with their survival, The Bahamas Government has designated a preserve area for the horses and ARKWILD is actively campaigning for funding and support for their efforts to ensure that the Wild Horses of Abaco survive as a living part of the history of the Abacos and The Bahamas. Immigration Cards
The Ministry of Tourism is working very closely with the Bahamas Immigration Department in creating a more multi-purpose Immigration Card with the ability to collect a wide assortment of information related to the quality of vacation experience throughout the Islands of the Bahamas. This data on the back of the regular section; is utilized to actively assist the Ministry of Tourism with its product development and marketing strategies. The Abaco Tourist Office, recently introduced a visual-aid campaign, designed to gently remind visitors to complete the information and deposit it with airlines before departure. The colourful Abaco Parrot is used to spread the message with constant reminders placed in the airports' arrival and departure terminals, cabs, ferries and hotel front-desks. All visitors are asked to kindly cooperate.
