A Civilized Safari ABACO OUTBACK

The word eco-ttourism is a relatively new word in the vocabulary of the tourism industry, but it is a word more and more tourists are using. Ecotourism means being able to experience the real natural beautiful environments of countries all over the globe. In the past few years the island of Abaco has developed into an eco-ttourism
destination with the luscious natural wonders of Abaco both on land and sea. The size of Abaco leaves many areas on the island virtually untouched and thus offers visitors a breath-ttaking experience, whether it is on land or on or under the sea. Nature awaits on Abaco!
Abaco Outback, located next to Wally's Restaurant in Marsh Harbour, offers many ways one can experience the natural environment of Abaco. Begun four years ago by Ron Pagliaro and his wife Erin, Abaco Outback has offered a variety of tours for Abaco’s visitors and school children. The most popular activity is kayaking and they offer both full-d day and half-d day trips. With a choice of single or tandem kayaks, each person paddles through the shallow protected creeks south of Marsh Harbour along the eastern shoreline of Great Abaco island. The kayak tour allows one to see the nature both on land and on the
water. Looking to the shore one can see the lush types of vegetation. There are the pine forests, the dense coppice forests and, of course, the mangroves which are vital to all marine life. With some snorkel gear and a quick splash, one can see the grass flats beneath the water, patches of coral and the surface of blue holes. Paddling along the shoreline also offers the opportunity to view the bird life from wading birds to the woodland birds. The full day kayaking tour, which leaves at 10 am and returns at 5 pm, offers two stops for snorkeling and a full picnic lunch at Sandy Cove. The half day kayaking tour which is four
hours in either the morning or the afternoon offers a great snorkeling stop over a vibrant patch of coral reef and includes healthy snacks and drinks. These tours can accommodate anywhere from 2 to 14 persons, but average 4 people so as to keep the personal touch in each tour. Erin says it is very rare that weather cancels these trips. Experience in handling a kayak is not essential, as Abaco Outback will teach you how to paddle and handle the kayak. For the land lubber Abaco Outback has several land excursions. The South Abaco Safari allows one to enjoy a nature walk in South Abaco forests where one can explore the geological formations of the island, the lush pine forest which ends at a fresh water blue hole. The excursion continues south to a fishing village (Sandy Point) where hikers are given a real Bahamian lunch.
A trip to see the endangered Bahama Parrots in the National Park in South Abaco is another land based tour option. The park was established by the Bahamas National Trust to preserve and protect these wonderful birds. In the early morning you can see the parrots take flight. You can see where they nest in the limestone holes on the ground. Into bird watching? Ron, a graduate of the Ministry of Tourism's Birding Tour Guide Certificate Program, can arrange birding tours to all parts of Abaco. These morning trips provide the avid bird watcher an opportunity to see the Bahamian endemics as well as migrants according
to the time of year, from wading birds such as egrets and herons to the woodland birds such as humming birds and woodpeckers, Bahama wood stars, Bahama yellow throats, Bahama mockingbirds and Bahama swallows as well as the occasional osprey. A new tour added this year is the Off Road Cycling Tours. One route takes the cyclists to Little Harbour and includes snorkeling. The second cycling trip takes the cyclist through the verdant and lush forests to visit inland Blue Holes and includes a picnic lunch in the forest. The last land tour offered is the most adventurous and the most strenuous, according to Erin. It involves a drive through the Abaco National Park to see the Bahamas parrots and then a tough 2 and ½ hour drive over an extremely bumpy road to Hole in the
Wall Light house, which is now mechanized. Persons can see a vast dry cave system or just sit back and enjoy the view. If they wish, they might continue on foot and hike to the southern most tip of Abaco to the Hole-iin-tthe-W Wall where they can see the high pounding waves crashing- a breath-ttaking site-.. In the Spring, they might get the wonderful opportunity to see the nesting pelagic birds, the white tail tropicbirds that spend their entire life at sea. The only time they come to land is to nest once a year. The Hole-iin-tthe-W Wall adventure is only for those who wish ruggedness and high adventure. 13
In 2003 Abaco Outback was awarded the Cacique Award for Nature Tourism by the Ministry of Tourism. It is a great achievement to receive this prestigious award. Ron is a licensed Bahamian boat captain, has a Certificate as a Birding tour Guide from the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and is a graduate of the Bahamahost Programme. Erin is also a licensed boat captain and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Red Cross certificates in First Aid and CPR, and is a certified Level Three British Canoe Union Paddler.
Abaco for all who wish to go whether it is by land, by sea, or both land and sea. In today's stressful world some time out with nature can rejuvenate the mind as well as the body. To view the peace and tranquility of pine forests, the gorgeous marine life under the sea including fish and coral, the bright green of the Bahamas parrot, the wonderful antics of the woodland birds or the grace of the wading birds gives one time to pause and say "nature is awesome."

the Conquest always carried horses. It would have been an easy swim across to the ‘mainland’ island where forage and water were abundant in the pine forest of Great Abaco. In the 1960s the herd, nearly 200 strong, was reduced to three horses. By 1992 the horses were up to 35, but today there are only 13 horses in the herd. Since 1999 there have been no foals. Research indicated that the horses should be returned to their original forest home. Several equine vets are working to bring them back to reproductive health. Wild Horses On the sun swept island 150 miles off Florida’s Gold Coast, 16 rare and endangered horses have made their debut to the world. In 2002 on the basis of three independent DNA analyses, the horses were designated a sub breed of the critically endangered Spanish Bard by the Horse of the American’s Registry. Abaco in The Bahamas was curator of possibly the purest strain of the “Horse of the Conquest” in exsistence. Wrackers has come back to Abaco, and it is a welcome return! Wrackers, which is slang for wreckers (those who engaged in the wrecking industry) is the name of Abaco’s newest boutique and art gallery, offering lots of nice gifts and clothing for the whole family, as well as offering fine original artwork by local artists. However, Wrackers is more than just a boutique and art gallery; it is a glimpse into Abaco’s past. On display in Wrackers’ art gallery are many ‘treasures’ from Abaco’s past offering a unique slant to the store that makes it well worth the visit. The gallery has original works by well know local artists, such as Marjolein Scott, Cal ‘Jeep’ Byers, Chan Pratt, Peter Johnston, Collette Rolle, and others, offering a wide variety of styles and subjects, from oils and acrylics to watercolors and silk to bronze and wood sculptures. They also have a section of affordable prints by various artists, special coin sets and other unique items. The boutique carries a wide variety of vibrant, colorful, quality clothing and accessories that will suite any taste. You may also wet your appetite for some Bahamian Calypso and ‘Rake ‘n’ Scrape’ music or some hand crafted jewelry.

At “Wrackers” customers are not just purchasing a product, but a piece of history and culture of the family islands. The cry of “Wrack Ashore” has been heard on Abaco since 1648, indicating that another cargoladen ship has run ashore due to the treacherous shoals and conflicting currents in the shallow Sea of Abaco. The men who engaged in the business of salvaging the cargo from these lost ships called themselves “Wreckers” or “Wrackers.” Vessels were built specifically for the wrecking business. Speed was essential for the design as they had a large area to cover and the captain that reached the sinking ship first was designated “Wreck Master.” By 1858 more than 2000 wrecking licenses were in effect and 302 vessels were busily engaged in gathering up this bounty from the sea. Not only did many Wrackers sustain personal injuries and material losses to save lives, they had a strong sense of justice that at times superseded their intent to gather wealth. An average of one wreck a month occurred prior to the building of the lighthouses at Hole-in-the-Wall and Elbow Reef. Profits from the wracking business allowed the communities of Abaco to survive and many of the original families have heirlooms and treasures rescued from the seas.

Bahama Dawn Designs
Bahama Dawn’s fabric art designs are the creation of owner, Kimberly Sturrup-Roberts. Known throughout the Bahamas, but mainly in Abaco and Nassau, she is considered a local of both. She was born and raised in Nassau, but relocated to Abaco eleven years ago. Kim’s creative juices have been flowing since childhood. Guided by her mother, Joann Sturrup (a master seamstress), Kim began making doll clothes, then quickly graduated to adult clothing and then onto complicated quilt designs. She soon went on to study Studio Art and Psychology at Palm Beach Atlantic College. Fresh from college Kim was inspired by Bahamian sealife and the flora and fauna of this warm tropical climate, which is still her inspiration today. Mainly, she works on art quilts which she designs and are reproduced in a variety of mediums, including framed silk paintings, quilted silk pillows, ceramic, glass and mosaic. Her art quilts are a collage of hand-dyed fabrics, thread and other textured materials featuring underwater sea-life, Bahamian people, 41

Abaco Parrot

ver five hundred years ago, our very first tourist walked our islands. He was impressed by one of our most beautiful, and noisy, natives, the Abaco Parrot a.k.a. the Bahama Parrot or Amazona leucocephala bahamensis (the white-headed Amazon parrot from the Bahamas). However, 500 years ago there were many more than we have today. An excerpt from Christopher Columbus’ Journal found in the Medieval Sourcebook at http://www.fordham.edu (©Paul Halsall Mar 1996), reads; “Sunday, 21 October. At 10 o’clock, we arrived at a cape of the island, and anchored... The melody of the birds was so exquisite that one was never willing to part from the spot, and the flocks of parrots obscured the heavens.” Unique among New World parrots, the Abaco parrot nests in natural limestone cavities on the ground. This nesting habit makes the parrot more vulnerable to predators, especially the wild cats of the Abaco forests. The parrots mate for life. While the female sits on eggs, the male visits the nest 4-6 times a day to feed the female. The Abaco/Bahama Amazon is a subspecies of the Cuban Amazon, having dark green feathers, white crown reaching their upper cheeks, olive-green eyes, rose-red throat and red shoulders. Their outer wing feathers have a tinge of blue and they have pink legs and a horn
beak. Rosemarie Gnam wrote, “The Bahama Amazon once lived on Abaco, New Providence, San Salvador, Long Island, Crooked Island, Acklins and Great Inagua. Christopher Columbus saw and described large flocks when he landed in the New World in 1492. Parrots have declined and disappeared throughout the islands because of habitat loss, hunting and capture for pets. Today, the Bahama Amazon is rare and exists only on Abaco and Great Inagua.” It’s illegal in the Bahamas for anyone to capture or own a Bahama Parrot. Violation of this law results in a $1,000 fine. The Bahamian Wild Bird Protection Act and CITES protect the Amazon today. Sadly, today the Abaco Parrot teeters precariously on the brink of extinction. At last count, taken by biologist Rosemarie Gnam in 1989, they numbered less than 1300. Abaco Outback offers bird watching tours that carry you to see the parrots first hand, as well as the many other species that live and frequent our island.

Marsh Harbour, the third largest city in The Bahamas (after Nassau and Freeport), serves as a central hub to all other settlements and cays and is the commercial capital of Abaco. With the Goombay Festivals, fine dining, local entertainers and summer time regattas among the choices, you can be sure to find something to fit your fancy. Elbow Cay Founded by Loyalist in 1783, Hope Town - the main settlement of Elbow Cay - has maintained its resemblance to New England's clapboard, pastel homes and white picket fences. A magnificent barrier reef protects white sand beaches and the unbelievably clear turquoise waters are filled with fish and dolphins. Adding to the charm and beauty of this historic cay stands an 89 foot candy striped lighthouse established in 1863 by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service. It is one of three kerosene lighthouses left in the world and is well worth the viewing.

Visit the Albert Lowe Museum and the Sculpture Garden, where you will learn the history of the area, or search out a quiet beach for swimming, snorkeling or shelling. Man-O-War Cay Known for the art of ship building and craftsmanship, Man-O-War Cay has continued to keep its heritage alive as it was centuries ago. Albury Brothers - built boats are some of the finest crafted you'll find anywhere. Joe's Studio offers hand crafted items made of Abaco wood and at Alburys Sail Shop where you can watch them make sturdy, colorful canvas products. Both are well worth the visit. We enjoy a tropical temperature year round. Water temperature ranges from the low 80s in the summer to the mid-70s in the winter.
Currency If you come across a $3 bill, it's ok. Bahamian paper money comes in ½ dollar, $1, $3, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills. There is also an extra Bahamian coin, the 15-cent, which is square with rounded corners and decorated with a hibiscus.
What to wear How to pack for your trip to the Bahamas depends on the time of year, where you plan to stay and what you plan to do. Summer wear is appropriate for day and evening, Bathing suits are not acceptable in any of the communities, only in pool areas and beaches. In the evening, depending on your choice of restaurant and activities, you can dress casual.
Exchange Rates The Bahamian dollar is on par with the U.S. dollar. A small exchange may be applicable when exchanging Traveler's Cheques for local currency.

What to do Try taking a cool shower or bath or place wet, cold wash rags on the burn. Encourage plenty of fluids to limit the possibility of dehydration. If blisters are present, dry bandages may help prevent infection. If your skin is not blistering, moisturizing cream may be applied to relieve discomfort. Over-the-counter medications, like ibuprofen, may help to relieve pain from sunburn.
Strict laws and penalties apply for possession of dangerous drugs and firearms. Any drugs considered dangerous including marijuana bring stiff fines and even jail terms if found in the possession of unauthorized persons.
Immigration Upon your arrival to The Bahamas you are given an immigration card to fill out. The officer at the Port of Entry will keep the top section and return the bottom section to you. You must return that portion to the ticket agent upon departure. Citizens of the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom or colonies do not need a passport for a visit that does not extend beyond 3 weeks, provided that you have proper identification, birth certificate, picture identification and a return ticket.
Get immediate attention if: Signs of dehydration or heatstroke occur, including fainting, unwillingness to take fluids or decreased urination. The blisters are oozing pus-like fluid or have other signs of infection. Next time, use plenty of waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. 59

Taxis Taxis are available and are found mostly at the airports in Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay. Taxi drivers are willing to wait for individuals to shop and would love to take you sightseeing. Fares vary within the Marsh Harbour area to the North and South of Abaco. Waiting time $20.00 per hour. Children under the age of three are free. Fare from the airport to Albury’s Ferry Dock is $12.00 per person and each additional person -- $3.00.
The Bahamas is the place to find world class 100% duty free bargains and one-of-a-kind collectibles in fine jewelry, leather bags, fragrances, china, crystal, linens, tablecloths, cameras, watches and accessories. Unlike most duty free ports proof of foreign residency is not required to purchase goods. Duty free refers to items being imported into The Bahamas.
Taxes There is no sales tax in the Bahamas. However, there are other forms of taxes that may occur on your trip to The Bahamas. There is hotel room tax of 12 - 15% that will be added to your bill at time of check out. $5 $25 agency charge for airline tickets booked through a travel agent.

Getting married in the Bahamas could not be easier. Just call the Ministry of Tourism Abaco Office to assist with your personal arrangements. To qualify to get married in the Bahamas, you must be a resident in the Bahamas for a minimum of one day. If either party has been divorced, the original final decree divorce papers must be produced. If either party is unmarried, being a citizen or resident of a country other than the USA, a declaration certifying this fact must be sworn by a notary public or other person authorized to administer oaths. The following docmentation is required: 1. Birth Certifiate documentation certificate 2. Passport 3. Notarized Affidavit stating that you/they have never been married. 4. Divorce papers if you/they have been married before. Customs Regulations PROHIBITED: Turtle shell goods, plants and fruits are not allowed into the US. REMEMBER: If you are carrying more than $10,000 in US or foreign currency, coins, traveller’s checks, etc. into the US, it MUST be reported to Customs. Please contact US Customs at 377-8461 if you have questions on importing any items.
BAHAMAS CUSTOMS
Baggage declaration by temporary visitors is oral, but the baggage is subject to Customs inspections. In case there are dutiable articles, the visitor will be required to complete a Baggage Claim Form. Each adult is allowed 50 cigars or 200 cigarettes or one pound of tobacco and one quart of spirits free of Customs Duty, in addition to personal effects. In addition, purchases up to a value of one hundred dollars ($100) are permitted by all arriving passengers. Household effects, such as china, furniture, linens and appliances by valid invoices and used household effects are subject to assessment by Customs Officers.
CANADIAN CUSTOMS EXEMPTION
Canadian residents including minors may claim $50 (Can.) exemption after an absence of 24 hours or more. This exemption which excludes tobacco and alcohol may be claimed numerous times annually by verbal declaration. After 48 hours absence any number of times a year, $200 exemption may be claimed. This merchandise which must accompany the traveller can include 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, 2 lbs of tobacco and 40 ounces of liquor. A $500 (Can.) exemption can be claimed after an absence of seven (7) days or more. This exemption may be claimed any number of times per year regardless of any $200 exemption claimed on a previous trip, but the two may not be combined at any time. The declaration for this exemption must be written. The allowance for liquor and tobacco is the same as for the $200 exemption. All duty-free items must be for personal or household use, or as gifts. Children who are literate and can understand the declaration may claim exemption. Persons must be over 16 years of age to import tobacco and spirits. Amounts are in Canadian dollars.
UNITED STATES CUSTOMS EXEMPTION
Residents of the US may take home merchandise valued up to $600 retail, duty free. This exemption applies to each family member, even infants. Family members living in the same household may pool exceptions to reduce the duty on an expensive item or carry in more items. All items must accompany the traveller to be eligible and must be for personal use or gifts and not for sale. The $600 exemption may only be claimed if you have been out of the US for 48 hours and may only be claimed every 30 days. Purchases of up to $1,000 more than the $600 allowance will be taxed at a flat rate of 10 percent based on the fair retail value in The Bahamas. Separate from the $600 exception, you may also mail gift packages of $100 value or less duty free. They must be marked ‘Unsolicited Gift’ and you may send as many as you wish but not more than one $100 gift package to the same person on the same day. Goods shipped for PERSONAL use may be mailed into the US DUTY and TAX FREE if the total value is not more than $200. This exception does not apply to perfume, alcoholic beverages or to cigars or cigarettes. If you do not meet the 48-hour and 30-day time requirements, you may take in $25 worth of items for your own personal or household use free of duty. This exception may not be pooled. Exemption limit of 10 cigars (not Cuban), 50 cigarettes and 4 ounces of liquor or 4 oz of cologne, may be included. If you spend more than $25 you must pay duty on the entire amount. SPECIAL NOTES: Antiques are considered duty free as long as there is accompanying proof that they are over 100 years old., Certain items which are manufactured in The Bahamas are not dutiable such as conch shell jewellery, wood carvings and straw goods. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: US residents 21 years of age and over are entitled to include their duty free allowance two litres 967 fl. oz.) of liquor provided that one of the litres is the product of The Bahamas or another Caribbean Basin country. You may carry more than two litres provided you pay the duty and applicable taxes. TOBACCO: Regardless of your age, if you are eligible for the $600 exemption, you may include 100 cigars (not Cuban) and 200 cigarettes.
UNITED KINGDOM CUSTOMS EXEMPTION UK residents returning from the Bahamas after an absence of more than 24 hours can take home duty and tax free 50 grammes (2 fluid ozs) of perfume and 250 cc of toilet water. Persons over 17 years of age are allowed, duty free, 1 litre (over 22% proof) of liquor or 2 litres of alcoholic beverages not over 22% proof or fortified or sparkling wine, plus 2 litres of still wine. Persons over 17 are also allowed 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250 grammes of tobacco. UK residents can bring 145 ponds sterling worth of other goods including gifts, souvenirs, cider and beer, which must be carried in baggage and cleared by you at the time of your arrival. You are advised to pack dutiable goods separately. The importation into the United Kingdom of some goods is prohibited and restricted. These include counterfeit coins, dangerous drugs, firearms and ammunition, dangerous knives, plants and bulbs, radio transmitters, (including walkie talkies), meat and poultry (not fully cooked) and live animals.
