Things to do while in line

instead of standing there alone staring at your phone.

Turn around and smile at the person behind you. Tell her your name and stick out your hand. If she shakes it, strike up a conversation. If not, smile sheepishly and turn back around, occasionally glancing back sadly over your shoulder.

See how close you can hold out your finger to the

person in front of you without actually touching her. Just stick out your finger (index preferred, pinky for the weird kids, middle finger for advanced players) and slowly move it towards the person in front of you until your finger is so close to her back that a piece of paper would feel fat trying to fit in between the gap. Then keep it there. If the person notices, don’t worry, just say, “I’m not touching you,” because it’ll be true.

Eavesdrop on the conversation going on in front

of or behind you and suddenly, without warning, join the conversation and pretend you were a part of the group all along. Occasionally erupt in uncontrollable laughter while patting your new friends on the back vigorously.

Count the number of all the people in line with brown

hair. Then subtract that number by the number of people wearing T-shirts of bands who played at Coachella. Then multiply that number by the number of the month you were born (January=1, February=2, etc.). Then clap until the person two people ahead of you turns around, and add how many claps it took for her to notice. You multiply this all by zero and you get zero. The good news is that you are now three feet further in line.

Take a selfie with a stranger and post it widely on social media. Share it with your friends and make them jealous of you and your cool new festival buddies.

Do the filmmakers a favor and talk about their films, use their hashtags and take photos! And don’t be afraid to wear your sunglasses in the shot. They make you look extra cool.

Every year, we at Citizen Jane choose a theme; something to guide us and remind us of who we are, why we’re here and where we are going as we create the festival. This year our theme is Interact. We have more ways to interact today than ever before– Facebook, Tumblr, email, etc.– but we also have more opportunity for isolation. We often watch movies alone on our laptops, cellphones and in our living rooms– which can be as state of the art as any theatre these days. So there’s something special about a film festival, and especially a community film festival that’s made from the ground up.

Seeing a film at a festival makes each viewing a community interaction, each showing different depending on the fellow patrons in the seats next to you. This year Citizen Jane is all about those connections: personal connections, widespread connections through social media, connection to our films and our filmmakers. And connection to each other!

Films are made to be shared with an audience. Discuss them with your friends, those you came with and others we hope you meet here. Share your own stories while you are here.

This isn’t passive consumption, folks. This is an interactive festival! Take in some kinetoscopes! Dance at the parties!

Share new ideas! Reconnect throughout the weekend and let us remember what it is like to be a community building something special. Something unique, that we all built together. One by one. We really can’t do this without you.

We’re here to help you make it happen.

Our community of professors and professional working writers are here to help you develop your vision, your voice and your career as a screenwriter. And they’ll do it on your schedule, on your time and in-between all of the other demands of your crazy-busy life.

The Stephens College Low-Residency Master of Fine Arts in TV and Screenwriting will prepare you to compete in the high-stakes world of professional scriptwriting. The second-oldest women’s college in the country, Stephens is an institution on a mission: To increase the voices and impact of women in television and film.

It’s a mission that has drawn both the attention and the support of some of the most successful and well-known women writers in Hollywood – women who care deeply about ensuring that women’s voices and stories are heard. Like yours.

You’ll work with professional mentors online most of the time. But twice a year, you’ll gather with your fellow students in Los Angeles – at the Jim Henson Studios – for 10 days of intensive classes, discussions, mentoring sessions and professional networking. You’ll leave for home thoroughly exhausted and hugely inspired to apply all of that wisdom and insight to your own creative work.

Buying a pass signals your commitment to supporting CJFF and celebrating women’s art and work...and it’s also a great deal! insane jane: $100. Reserve tickets to any film and CJ Filmmaker Brunch online, on a space available basis. You’ll have access to the VIP Party and Saturday Night Dance Party. You can also get into the “Wait Line” at any venue and get into any film free on a space available basis. We do highly recommend reserving a ticket online to guarantee seating. Your tickets will be assembled into a Pass Packet by the Box Office team and held for you at the Box Office. You can pick them up anytime during Box Office Hours.

PLAIN JANE: $60. This pass includes all films, workshops and discussion panels. Dance party is $5 at the door.

TICKETS: Opening Night: $10 General Public, $8 Students and Seniors. All other films: $8 General Public, $6 Students and Seniors.

Do I need a ticket for every event?

Yes. No one will be admitted to a film without a ticket, even volunteers and passholders. Each ticket has a little scannable bar code so we can keep accurate records. Passholders must have a printed ticket for every film they want to see. Passholders, can get tickets for any film, but they are based on availability, so if you really want to see a film, don’t wait.

I heard that if I don’t get to the film 15 minutes before the show starts, even if I have a pass and a ticket, I might not get in. Is this true?

Yes, it is. All passholders MUST arrive at the film venue at least 15 minutes before the start of the film. If you aren’t present, the Box Office will give your seat away to those standing by. Our best advice is to arrive at the venue 30 minutes before each film begins to guarantee your seat isn’t taken.

FRIDAY 12 PM @ Columbia access television studios A casual chat with Elaine McMillion Sheldon and Sarah Ginsburg, the creators and voices of She Does podcast.

While they are filmmakers first, they’ve translated their storytelling and editing skills to create audio portraits.

Their work has been recognized by The Huffington Post, Filmmaker Magazine, and they are a part of Slate’s Panoply Network. Learn about how they made the transition from visual filmmaking to audio storytelling in this casual workshop. Come with questions; leave with ideas.

Dance and Experimental Filmmaking

FRIDAY 1:30 PM @ Columbia access television studios Not all filmmakers make linear, narrative-driven films. The genre of dance films keeps growing internationally every year and expanding our idea of filmmaking. Experimental filmmaking has been around since celluloid, yet always exists between the edges of independent film and modern art. Listen to these artists discuss their films, which often involve interdisciplinary art forms, including performances, spoken word, visual effects and soundscapes. These films live somewhere in our imagination and on the screen. Learn how it is the same and how it is different than “traditional” filmmaking and ask questions.

Interactions in Action with Film Fatales

Film Fatales is a global network of women directors who meet regularly to mentor each other, share resources, collaborate on projects and build a supportive community in which to make their films. Now with chapters all over the world, we’re going to have our own “live” version right here in CoMo at CJFF. Listen to feature filmmakers of CJFF discuss their films, how they maintain a career in independent film over time, and who they seek out as mentors on a regular basis. We’ll get a sneak peek with clips from their films and take questions from the audience looking for advice. Pick their brains and see mentoring in action. Or ask a question and interact!

After the regime fell from power in 2001, a fledgling free press emerged and a photography revolution was born. Set in a modern Afghanistan bursting with color and character, FRAME BY FRAME follows four Afghan photojournalists as they navigate an emerging and dangerous media landscape – reframing Afghanistan for the world and for themselves. Co-director Mo Scarpelli is a former CoMo local and graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

What does it mean to strive to be a female artist who not only maintains a career, but stays at the top? Maiko’s destiny was decided before she was born; her name means “dancing child”. Today Maiko is 32 and on top of her career as a prima ballerina at the Norwegian National Ballet. Competition is getting tougher when Maiko decides to start a family. We follow Maiko at a breaking point in her life, where she is forced to make decisions that might jeopardize everything.

Poets of Infinity

PERFORMING BEFORE SELECT FILMS Poets of Infinity is a new organization on the Stephens College campus, and they’ve made quite a name for themselves. Poets of Infinity seeks to bring spoken word to an audience and empower others to express themselves through poetry. Often a vehicle to promote social justice, their poetry aims to not only impact your way of thinking, but also aims to leave you with an emotional connection to their words.

BEFORE OPENING NIGHT FILM The Stephens College Dance Company is delighted to perform Brandi Coleman’s comic dance work laughing, gasping, screaming, crying at the opening performance of the Citizen Jane Film Festival. Using rhythm-driven, emotionally charged movement, the piece is a quirky commentary on social interactions, emotional outbursts and conscious connection.

BEFORE CLOSING NIGHT FILM And One More Thing, choreographed and performed by Brandi Coleman, is a funky, feisty dance work inspired by author and scholar Robert Farris Thompson’s concept of the aesthetic of the cool. Brandi joins the faculty of our three-year BFA in Dance program at Stephens College after mentoring students as a world dance guest artist.

A Woman Like Me

When real life is going badly for Sichel, she turns to Anna to change the script. This award-winning film is one of the most beautiful and innovative films to hit the festival circuit.

This one-of-a-kind narrative film melds gorgeous still-frame montages inspired by the possibilities of a modern African aesthetic and documentary-like techniques to explore its core theme: how do we let go of the things and people we love?

Gene discovers that Titty has an ongoing online relationship with the beautiful but reclusive Ginger, who is an animal activist.

Gene and Titty journey to meet Ginger, and their trek becomes a journey into deeper friendships and into the complexity of the connections between humans.

It’s Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong

Imba Means Sing Danielle Bernstein is an award-winning filmmaker dedicated to social issues.

She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University and founded Clear Films Productions. Her directorial debut, When Clouds Clear, attended over 50 film festivals. She has won a Cine Golden Eagle Award, Accolade Award, the New York State Council of the Arts Grant and First Pix NextPix. She is a contributor to ONE.org and the proud mother of a baby girl.

THE DRESS Born and raised in Wentzville, Missouri, April Berryman has been writing since she was 10 years old.

She writes stories that are true and examines what life is really like; sometimes there isn’t always a happy ending.

She hopes to one day open her own flower shop and start a non-profit surrounding the care and adoption of rodents, specifically guinea pigs, rats and rabbits.

Sara Blecher is a cofounder of CINGA Productions, a South African-based film and television production company that has made a number of award-winning drama series including ZERO TOLERANCE. Sara won CNN’s African Journalist of the Year Award for KOBUS AND DUMILE and her film SURFING SOWETO won the South African Film and Television Golden Horn Award for Best Documentary Feature and Best Full Length Documentary at the Africa World Documentary Film Festival 2012. She is co-creator, director and producer of the award-winning 36-part drama BAY OF PLENTY and has also been director as well as series producer of the local version of WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? An honours graduate of NYU, Blecher lives in Johannesburg.

Courtesan Filmmakers Jeremy Osbern and Misti Boland have worked together for over 10 years in various capacities.

The films they’ve worked on have screened at Sundance, Berlin and have been sold for distribution around the world. Courtesan is their first film as co-directors, and it debuted at the Slamdance Film Festival. Oh, they’re also married and still like each other.

funny bunny Tara Culp is an actress and producer with 20 years of experience in theatre and film. She made her stage debut in DELICIOUS VAUDEVILLE, produced by David Binder (HEDWIG and the ANGRY INCH). She was soon drawn towards film and photography where she worked as a personal assistant for Brian De Palma on the films SNAKE EYES and MISSION TO MARS. She co-produced the short film THE WINDOW, and was casting consultant for the feature HOME, both by Jono Oliver.

She is currently working as a casting consultant on Daniel Labbs’ film JULES OF LIGHT AND DARK and developing a new project with Alex Auder.

THE LAND Liz Cambron is a writer, director, editor, cinematographer and sometimes activist based in the Midwest. She is currently an MFA student at the University of Illinois of Chicago. She is currently making experimental video pieces that she calls “tiny poetic feminist protests.” She is also a feminist badass and is in a punk band called c***storm.

four-way stop Efi da Silva was born to Angolan refugee parents in Namibia. After spending her first few years in a Botswanan refugee camp, her family was granted permission to move to St. Louis, a surprisingly diverse community filled with other immigrants. As Efi grew older, she witnessed misunderstandings that stemmed from the ignorance of different cultures and knew that she wanted to shed light on their reality. Soon after graduating Efi began producing her first feature film Four-Way Stop, a slice of the St. Louis inner-city life she witnessed while growing up.

Catherine Dudley-Rose is an award-winning writer/director, actress and musician. She has taught at the NY Stage & Film Program, the Broadway Theatre Institute, and been a guest teaching artist and performer in numerous venues. Her film PARALLEL CHORDS is loosely autobiographical: she was brought up as a violinist playing with her concert pianist father and “escaped” to NYC with a hundred dollars at a young age.

She is a National Film Challenge finalist.

Emma Penaz Eisner, a 12-year-old filmmaker and artist from San Francisco, began making films in kindergarten and continued independently thereafter.

Over the past three years, she has created criticallyacclaimed short films that have screened worldwide at 57 international film festivals and won 25 awards. Her work is in stop-motion animation, live action combined with animation and experimental filmmaking.

Mandy Fa b ian You’re Breaking Up

Originally from Austin, Texas, Mandy Fabian was one of four directors chosen to receive the Sony Pictures Television Directing Fellowship last year. Her short film KILLING VIVIAN earned her “Top Female Filmmaker” at the Chicago Comedy Film Festival.

Her film SOMEBODY’S MOTHER has won Best Short, Best Actress, Best Director and won her Best New Director of the Year with NewFilmmakers Los Angeles. YOU’RE BREAKING UP is Mandy’s third short, and she is slated to direct a feature in the Spring 2016.

Sarah Ginsburg is based in Boston. She is the codirector of photography and co-editor of the upcoming feature documentary Best and Most Beautiful Things. After volunteering at the Citizen Jane Film Festival, Pat’s personal achievements as a filmmaker include having entries accepted into “Gimme Truth” at True False Film Fest and the Columbia Film Showcase.

Jennifer Jessum is Founder and Artistic Director of Flying Limbs Inc Productions.

She holds an MFA in Film Production from USC School of Cinematic Arts, and an MFA in Dance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her two feature documentaries, Holy Man: The USA vs. Douglas White, narrated by Martin Sheen, and Finding God in the City of Angels have both received critical acclaim.

Jennifer Lafleur (“Annie” in THE MIDNIGHT SWIM) is an actor and producer. She coproduced and stars in LAMB, directed by Ross Partridge, which premiered at SXSW this year and will be distributed by The Orchard. She co-created the series WEDLOCK and stars alongside Mark Duplass and Rob Corrdry. She was one of the leads of the Duplass Brother’s The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, and appeared in their films Baghead and Jeff Who Lives At Home. She has also been seen in FX’s Married, Comedy Central’s Review, TNT’s Major Crimes, Adult Swim’s Newsreaders and You’re Whole, and films The Pretty One, Mutual Friends and Hannah Fidell’s 6 Years. She has since been busy writing and directing short films, traveling the world as a camera operator for major TV networks, producing a Midwest Emmy Award-winning regional television show, running her company Logger’s Lunchbox, LLC and honing her skills as a cinematographer on short and feature-length indie films.

Desta Reff is a filmmaker and visual legal advocate who has worked extensively in both narrative and documentary film. Desta began her career in New York City, working in independent film. She transitioned into visual advocacy while attending Harvard Law School. While at Harvard, Desta created several short-form documentaries around important social justice issues as well as co-founded the Harvard Law and Documentary Studio. Desta currently serves as the Harvard Delta Clinical Fellow, working in the Mississippi Delta to promote public health and social change. Her films have screened across the country and have been used in several policy advocacy campaigns.

She balances her legal and film work with her other most important job, being a mother to her two toddlers Edith and Maple.

Julia’s first film, GROWING UP FEMALE, was chosen for the National Film Registry. Her films UNION MAIDS, SEEING RED and THE LAST TRUCK were nominated for Academy Awards. Her film A LION IN THE HOUSE, made with Steve Bognar, premiered at Sundance, screened nationally on PBS and won the Primetime Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking. They continue to make documentary films that screen widely at festivals (SPARKLE) and online (Op-docs No Guns For Christmas). Julia is cofounder of the film distribution co-op New Day Films. She is the author of “Do It Yourself”, the first book on selfdistribution in independent film, and is a voting member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

Savannah Rodgers is a filmmaker based out of Lawrence, Kansas.

Politically Correct is her debut short film; it has previously won awards from various festivals, including the Kansas City LGBT Film Festival and the Doc Sunback Film Festival.

She is on the Board of Directors for the See/Saw Film Festival, Kansas City Women in Film and Television and is currently studying film at the University of Kansas.

Cherie Sampson has worked for over 25 years as an interdisciplinary artist in environmental performance, sculpture and video art.

Mo Scarpelli is a non-fiction filmmaker and multimedia journalist. Mo is the founder and director of Rake Films, which produces character-rich films and multimedia stories for news and non-profits. She holds a bachelor’s in journalism from the University of Missouri, nearly 10 years of experience filming in unfamiliar territories, and has a bottle opener on her at all times that doubles as a tripod key.

Three-time CJFF alum Kris Swanberg began her film career at Southern Illinois University where she studied documentary film production.

Using naturalistic techniques and often working with nonactors, Kris went on to focus her career in narrative film. Her first feature, It Was Great, But I Was Ready to Come Home, played in competition at the SXSW Film Festival in 2009, followed by her next feature, Empire Builder, and short film Baby Mary.

Ondi Timoner has the rare distinction of winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival twice: for her 2004 documentary DIG!, and her 2009 top prize-winner, WE LIVE IN PUBLIC. Both films were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York for their permanent collection. Her other award-winning features include The Nature of the Beast, Join Us and COOL IT. BRAND: A Second Coming premiered as the Opening Night film at SXSW 2015. BRAND then opened the Ashland Independent Film Festival, winning the No Limits Award, and was the Centerpiece Film at the Sarasota Film Festival, where it won the Dramatic Storytelling in Documentary Award.

Ignacio Alonso Vear Ignacio began his acting career in 2010 shortly after meeting his future wife. Having never acted before, he has performed roles as a ghost, serial killer, star crossed lover and foster parent for dogs. In addition to acting, he has taken on roles behind the scenes as a director’s assistant, production accountant and festival strategist.

Since moving to NYC, Lisa Alonso Vear has worked on 30+ feature films, corporate videos and short films in various capacities.

Throughout the years she has volunteered at industry events for The International Academy of Television of Arts & Sciences, SilverDocs Film Festival, IFP Film Market and Vimeo Film Festival. Her first short film, LAYLA’S MILLSTONE, was accepted into the Short Film Corner at the 2010 Festival de Cannes. Lisa wrote/directed/produced FOSTER DOG, which has thus far been accepted into 15 festivals, garnering awards for Best of Fest, Best Editing and Youth Audience Choice Award.

Her advocacy and passion for working with animals was the inspiration behind FOSTER DOG.

The theme “Interact” initially conjures themes of technology and all the modern tools we use to communicate today, pixels and screens; but what else?

I started assembling social media icons and ancient symbols from various religions and cultures, and was pleasantly surprised they looked so at home together.

But why wouldn’t they? People have always been reaching out to each other, through telling stories and creating art, exchanging symbols to create meaning and connection. Putting emoji next to their great-greatgrandmothers found on the walls of caves reminds us that while the medium may change, the hope of interaction stays the same. Every icon on the poster and program you see has a specific story; here are three of them.

The Beetle

“Aithníonn ciaróg ciaróg eile,” is a Gaelic proverb, which translates as “One beetle recognizes another.” The world can be a sprawling, scattered place, but sometimes we find people who we click with– we find another beetle and we recognize her as a teammate. The art of community becomes the community of art, and through that we have built the Citizen Jane tribe that you are now a part of.

The TRIPLE GODDESS This symbol is the Lunar Triple Goddess, an illustration of the waxing, waning and full phases of the moon representing an encouraging message of growth: “The woman I was, the woman I am, the woman I am becoming.” Our art usually shows this symbol in repetition, as growth and change are neverending.

WILLENDORF VENUS

You might remember this lady from Art History class. The Willendorf Venus is one of the earliest representations we have of the human body. Her exaggerated features were always thought to be symbolic of fertility, but a new theory has come to light about why her proportions seem so warped– the figurine is a selfportrait. The sculptor, having no mirrors and instead looking down upon her own body, would have a unique, distorted perspective like that of the Willendorf figurine!

This theory, that the oldest example we have of a person depicted in art is a woman depicting her own self, is a reminder that when women express their world in their own terms it leaves a lasting impression.

Tiny Circus is a collaborative project that facilitates workshops and works in a variety of media, including stop motion animation, documentary audio and video, zines and social interaction to investigate big ideas. Participants in our workshops experience all parts of the creative process and build a wide range of skills–brainstorming, communicating and creating together. For the Circus, successful collaboration means each participant will engage with and expand their perspective on the familiar, yet complex, topics we examine.
