CELEBRATING THE BIG ONE-O Well, firstly a big thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has embraced Ruffles & Cake online wedding magazine with so much love and support. I truly can’t believe that Ruffles & Cake is one year old, already! I’m so happy that co-founder Savanah and myself had the ‘lightbulb’ moment to create something so different for North Queensland. With my past experience in magazine design, and being a wedding photographer and graphic designer myself, it kind of felt like the perfect match, really. I remember the day that Ruffles & Cake hit the web, I couldn’t keep off Facebook and our reader count. We loved hearing messages of love and support, and sharing in celebrating our first edition with us that we were so proud of. Following our launch, our Win your Wedding competition has by far been one of the most memorable moments for Ruffles & Cake. We had hundreds of you head to the Mecure Wedding Expo last July to our ‘Ruffles & Cake’ Deck, where we gave you the opportunity to ‘Win your Wedding’. A competition that had all of Townsville talking thanks to our promotions on social media, television and radio. Over the past year, we’ve focused on bringing our readers the most inspiring ideas, ideas and stories. Of course this issue is nothing less. There’s loads of beautiful images from our featured local weddings, plus the first look at our Win your Wedding Winners, Nathan and Larissa. We also chat with one of Australia’s most talented designers, Anna Campbell. Don’t tell my partner (who’s yet to propose!) that I’ve already picked out my wedding dress. We’ve changed the look a touch for our 1st birthday edition, and would love to hear what you think. As one year ends and another starts, there’s still so much opportunity to grow Ruffles & Cake and can’t wait to share in this with you. We’ve got much more planned for the year ahead and it’s only up from here.

HOW WE MET he said She was the girl next door. We each lived with friends and she was the stand out.

she said We were neighbours! His [Justin’s] housemate conveniently kicked the ball over the fence into our yard, and the rest is history.

T H E F I R S T D AT E he said I think it was the movies... Otherwise dinner at Michel’s.

she said He’ll say it was a Movie date, but I remember going out for dinner at Michel’s.

26

THE FIRST KISS he said Front door step of her house. The step helped even out the height difference.

she said On the doorstep of my house in the early hours of the morning. He was either just coming home from work, or on his way.

28

THE FIRST I LOVE YOU he said I said it first, though can’t remember the details. [I] have said it so many times since.

she said He was the first to say it.

FINDING THE ONE he said We spent plenty of nights on the driveway talking and it grew from there. When you know, you know.

she said He’s my best friend. We might bicker every now and then, but I cannot imagine our lives any other way. He’s stuck by me and helped me through some pretty hard times, that’s how I know.

32

34

THE BEST MOMENTS he said Our holidays to Fraser Island and America. Both very memorable and can’t wait to go back.

she said There are so many. But, if I had to chose one, I would say the helicopter ride into the Grand Canyon together. Definitely a tick off the bucket list.

THE PROPOSAL he said The timing was right and everything just came together -the ring, the holiday, the location.

she said I wasn’t expecting it at all. We had just landed in San Francisco and we walked all over the city, until we were just near the Golden Gate. He did such a great job, it was perfect.

THE WEDDING he said Still in the planning stage, but I’m sure it will be perfect!

she said There really isn’t too much to tell right now, but plans are definitely underway! Watch this space...

RUFFLES & CAKE CHATS WITH

ANNA CAMPBELL FEATURE INTERVIEW

Not only is Anna Campbell the owner and designer of a range of stunning wedding gowns, she is also about to start planning her own wedding. We chatted to Anna about designing dresses, bridal do’s and don’ts, and her plans for the big day. She’s also the lady behind the amazing dresses in our fashion feature this edition.

44

46

What inspired you to start designing wedding gowns and how did you make your start in the industry? I never really imagined myself designing wedding dresses and made my start with colourful cocktail dresses and headpieces. Brides started requesting the dresses be made longer in bridal tones and before I knew it, I was a bridal designer!

Was this something you always wanted to do or did it evolve over time? I always knew that I wanted to be creative although I wasn’t sure in what medium. When leaving high school I thought seriously about printmaking or graphics before I decided to start studying fashion.

What do you love most about what you do? The freedom that you have when designing bridal is incredible. You get to use the most beautiful, luxurious fabrics and laces, design the most intricate embellishments, and work one on one with your clients, which is unlike any other fashion collection. I love the relationship that we form with our brides over time and you can’t help but be emotionally involved with each bride’s journey.

Your style of gowns is quite distinctive, they are very soft and feminine and quite romantic - what’s the main inspiration behind your designs? I just want to create dresses that I would love to wear! We have never focused on competitors or trends or what we are expected to create. If we all swoon over a new design and would want to wear it, then we put it in a collection - it’s that simple.

Describe the process from start to finish that a bride would go through when deciding on an Anna Campbell design? This really depends on what collection the bride is working with. Our Ivory Collection is more of an off-the-rack style range. This range suits the bride who falls in love with the design as-is, chooses her size, orders it in, then away she goes! The Made to Measure collection involves much more design consultation by appointment. Brides try on samples from the collection and we work with them to create a design individually for them, based on the elements of what they loved across the entire range.

Do you have a favorite design from your collection or one in particular that’s close to your heart? as it depends on the last bride that I worked with! Last night

Where is your dream honeymoon destination and what would it involve? Have you started planning your own honeymoon?

I designed an entire new concept with a bride by combining

elements of two of our Gossamer collection gowns and I cannot stop thinking about how beautiful that dress will be. But it is guaranteed that the next client will suit something completely different, and then that will be my new favourite. We have just released three injection pieces to our Belle Ivoire range, which is part of the Ivory Collection. The Miranda is one of the new pieces and it is seriously beautiful! It really takes our off-the-rack range to a whole new level. I was lucky enough to take this dress to New York and Los Angeles late last year and meet brides there who also fell in love with it.

Along with helping brides perfect their special day – you are in the process of planning your own wedding. Can you let us in on any of your plans for the big day?

to keep up with the growth of the business ever since. During my early twenties when all of my friends were traveling through Europe, I was just trying to manage the business. In the early years, when you are starting up, you have to work in every facet so I was an accountant, managed dispatch, design, machining, sales, media etc. Each year we grow we are able to take on more staff, so the chance to travel hasn’t really presented itself until now as I have an incredible team of staff behind me. So the long answer to your question is that I want to travel through Europe!

What should brides look out for when picking their dress and how do they decide? Brides should ask about all potential up-front costs that aren’t included in the initial quote. Our Made-to-Measure clients are now given an agreement which details exactly what is included

suddenly look a whole lot taller/slimmer or curvier (whatever you desire) because generally, it will just look like a new version of the sample.

What are Anna Campbell’s goals for 2014? We will again release a new Ivory collection and travel around Australia and the USA with the collection in a series of trunk shows, which is amazing as we get to meet our brides from around the world. We will also launch ‘Style by Anna Campbell’ which is a DIY style hire service for brides to hire vintage wedding decor to style their weddings.

A N N A’ S T I P S T O PICKING THE PERFECT DRESS 1. Love it When you try it on you should feel excited, and happy. If you feel unsure, or confused, then keep looking.

2. Buy silk There is just no comparison. It feels so much better, and it breathes. Who wants to be sweaty and sticky on their big day?

3. Get a good vibe from your stylist When having a dress made, make sure you trust and like your designer or stylist. If you don't get a good vibe from them or have opposing views then the whole process will be difficult.

4. Have trust Once you like your stylist, trust them! I can’t speak for other bridal designers, but our stylists always want what is best for the bride and sometimes that takes a leap of faith from the bride to trust us on a design!

5. Choose what you love Choose a dress and a designer that YOU love (and maybe one trusted stylish friend who has your best interests at heart) and not what your mum, sister or aunty may love. You need to wear it on the day, and look at the photos forever!

EMMA + KOBIE REAL WEDDING

BE WITH THE ONES YOU LOVE “Having my best friends and parents with me before hand was very special. We had a lot of fun dancing away to the Spice Girls and Michael Jackson. They really helped to calm my nerves and truly cherish the day. “ - Emma

THE LITTLE THINGS “My Maid of Honour and lovely sister had an amazing hanger made with ‘Mrs Johnson’ scripted in wire which I discovered on the morning of our wedding upon opening the bag of my wedding dress. These little things made our day even more special.” - Emma

THE LITTLE THINGS “My Dad walked my down the aisle to a string quartet who played a classical number and then an amazing rendition of The Beatles ‘All you Need is Love’ as we walked down the isle finally as husband and wife. It was so amazing to see so many people that we love, and appreciate all in the one place - there just for us. Together we created a ceremony that was so personal and just perfect for us. It even included a few personal touches in our vows to honour Kobie’s love for rocks (haha)” - Emma

THE DRESS I didn’t plan on purchasing my dress when I did, but it was one of those moments when the dress fell off the hanger into my arms and it was everything that I had pictured. It was made from lace complete with a sculpted neckline, scalloped straps, a v-shaped back and Swarovski crystals. I wore a beautiful hair piece which matched the beading and lace on my dress. - Emma

S TA N D O U T M O M E N T S “It is really hard to pin point a stand out moment as each part of the day was wonderful. From seeing each other for the very first time to having a ball taking photos, speaking to our loved ones and dancing the night away - We loved it all and wish we could celebrate like that every weekend. It really is the best day ever!! - Emma

64

THE ENGAGEMENT “We got engaged on our 7th year anniversary after a lovely relaxing weekend overlooking the water at Magnetic Island. Kobie nervously asked the big question on the patio of our new home that was under construction at the time. He got down on one knee under a beautiful starry sky and asked the question. I think I spent the next 3 hours asking ‘is this real’ and ‘are you sure’. It was lovely to create memories in our first home before we had even moved in.” - Emma

THE RECEPTION “We couldn’t get over the idea that everyone in the room was here to celebrate us, and we still can’t get over how much love was in the room that night! Our first dance was to Angels by The XX – a song that not too many people know but one that really meant a lot to us. The words, although simple, are particularly special to us and serve as a declaration of our love to each other. “ - Emma

S TAY I N G T O G E T H E R “Ryan and I decided that we would both get ready at home together. My Mum and sister helped us both. I caught a moment between my mum, sister Chloe and Ryan helping him with his tie. It made me smile and was really special. - Prue

THE CEREMONY “When we started planning we wanted our whole day to be fun, beautiful and stylish. Ryan found our location on his own and we feel in love with it - even having picnics in the garden in the months leading up to the wedding. Our celebrant stood in our guests, we loved being able to see our guests as we went through the ceremony. “ - Prue

SHARING IN THE MOMENT “Our celebrant was amazing and helped us to create something that was everything we wanted. We stood together, facing our friends, family and nephews, and were able to enjoy watching them experience our day. - Prue

80

IN REVERSE “We had all our photos before the ceremony, and Ryan drove us and our photographer around in our own car. I think that it made us relax and enjoy each others company. - Prue

THE DRESS “I found and purchased my dress at Brides of Beecroft in Sydney when I was down visiting my family. Ali from the Augusta Jones range. I knew that I wanted lace but not off the shoulder. I knew that it was the one the minute that I saw it on the rack. I felt stylish, elegant and understated. - Prue

88

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN “While living in Cairns, a group of friends and I came down to Townsville for a weekend away. Ryan and I met at the Exchange, and both just really enjoyed having fun. For the next 2.5 years we did the long distance ‘thing’, which was a huge challenge, but we made it work until I could relocate to Townsville. It wasn’t easy. A lot of tears at the airport.” - Prue

S H A R E W H AT Y O U L O V E “Given that we had so many of our guests coming in from interstate, we wanted to show them what we love about our home. We choose our favourite restaurant, Jam Corner. We love the cool, comfortable, contemporary, smart look and feel of the restaurant. Plus, we wanted great food and amazing wine to be shared with our guests. - Prue

96

RECEPTION STYLE “One long table with meals served at the table from shared platters meant that our guests made conversation while passing the items around. It was a great way to start discussions given that not everyone knew each other. - Prue

MEMORABLE MOMENT “My most enjoyable moment was listening to Ryan’s speech. He hates the limelight but was fantastic. He spoke beautifully and was funny, charming and loving.” - Prue

SPECIAL EXTENDED FEATURE

NATHAN + LARISSA FEATURE WEDDING

Ruffles & Cake teamed together with Townsville’s best suppliers to create ‘Win your Wedding’ competition in July, 2013. The competition gave one lucky couple the opportunity to win (a close to) all expenses paid wedding. In this extended feature wedding, we feature our winners Nathan and Larissa and a first look at their professional photos from their day. We could think of two more deserving and appreciative couple to take out the prize. A big thank you to everyone for your support in our Win your Wedding Campaign, to those who entered and of course our fabulous sponsors who made the Win your Wedding Competition happen.

106

A PA M P E R E D S TA R T T O T H E D AY The ladies started their day off being pampered (we’re talking champagne, massage, footspas... the whole lot) at Capelli Hair Gallery. Between the pampering, the team at Capelli worked their magic to create classicly beautiful style’s for Larissa’s wedding party.

THE BOYS Nathan and his groomsmen prepped at Mercure Townsville, just down from Larissa’s room. Whilst Nathan and Larissa stayed true to tradition and didn’t see each other before the ceremony, they did casually text a good morning message, asking what each other were up to that day - with the response ‘not much, you?” We loved this.

110

THE GIRLS Larissa kept herself cool, calm and collected getting ready, confident that Nathan had infact was the ‘Bridezilla’ of the two. Cheree from Urban Miss Makeup worked with Larissa and her bridal party to create looks for the each of the girls that was natural and sophisticated.

T H E L I T T L E D E TA I L S Nathan and Larissa’s style may have changed during the planning process, but their attention to detail did not. We are in love with the intricate design of Larissa’s beautiful Wendy Makin dress from Belladonna Bridal, and Larissa’s stunning handmade Diamond Pave white gold wedding ring. Nathan opted for a classic white gold gent’s wedding band, both from Loloma Jeweller’s.

118

CUTE AS A BUTTON Larissa’s twin nieces looked adorable as flower girls, wearing gorgeous mint dresses thanks to Tutu Society.

122

THE CEREMONY The Plantation Deck at Mercure Townsville was the perfect spot for an indoor ceremony. Being a February wedding, Larissa was certain along the way that she wanted to celebrate their vows under cover, just incase. Larissa was adamant that she would ‘hold it together’ walking down the aisle, but as she was held hand in hand with her father, seeing Nathan was more emotional than she’d thought.

FROM THE HEART There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Nathan and Larissa shared their vows. Celebrant Lynda Ross helped these two with some fantastic ideas to keep it unique to them, and ways to incorporate their families into the ceremony.

A STYLISH EXIT Guests were each given streamers to line the aisle as Nathan and Larissa walked hand in hand as husband and wife. A cute idea that makes for an even better photo!

126

A N I C E D AY F O R A P H O T O Wet weather plans were in place and ready to go, but thankfully the skies cleared, and everything was amazing for Nathan and Larissa’s day. Skye Bree captured their day with her relaxed and easy going style - making the thought of photos a little more fun for the bridal party and the newlyweds.

128

THE FLOWERS Larissa was first to admit about her lack of knowledge of flowers, but loved what Townsville Wedding Flowers and Designs were able to help pick out for the day. And so do we!

THE RECEPTION The Mercure Townsville was the perfect venue for Nathan and Larissa to celebrate both the reception and ceremony, and allowed for guests to relax in one location between the two. White fairy-lit trees dripped with crystals, black chair bands, black and white damask print table runners, and a stunning backlight backdrop thanks to Dreamscene Events set the tone for Nathan and Larissa’s reception. Plus, Pooles of Music and Flash Photobooths were there to help get the party started!

YOUR VOICE We asked you your opinion Facebook. This is what you said...

OLD SCHOOL RULE - YOU SHOULDN’T SEE EACH OTHER UNTIL THE CEREMONY. WHAT DO YOU THINK? “I just asked my husband and LOL [laugh out loud], he responds with, “it’s OK to see her in her casual gear just not in her show time gear until the moment”.” DEBBIE STEWART

“Yes! But I think that the bride and groom should at least try to enjoy some quality time together over breakfast first because they will spend so much time with everyone else that they may not get much time together on the day.” CAREENA WEBSTER “Oh definitely. There arent many surprises these days. And I think this adds to the excitement of the day.” TA R A R O B E R T S O N “I think it’s good. Keeps the excitement and makes the moment he sees you all dressed up more special.”

KELSEY LOVEGROVE “My partner and I are having our photos before the ceremony. We’re going to have ‘first site’ styled photos, and that way we get to spend more time with the photographer and we’ll be more relaxed as [throughout the day] as we’re not rushing. It will also be the only part of the day that it’s just us and we’ll get to enjoy our time together.”

“I think the first sight for the bride and groom on their own before the ceremony could be quite a beautiful memory to have. It would be a lot more intimate to have a moment just before the wedding to yourselves to admire each other and then again in front of those you love and care for.” KRISTY HAMMELSWANG

JAHMARA WOOL “I loved saying goodnight to my husband to be the night before and sending him to another room in the hotel.. it was such a special moment to walk down the aisle and see him in the distance..” AMANDA BROWNHILL

Of course! It’s always one of the best things about any wedding, the groom seeing his bride for the first time. ERICA KIPPIN
