SUMMER LOVIN’ It’s Summer already, and Summer means the festive season is just around the corner!! Infact, by the time your reading this... it could just be the new year! For the two of us at Ruffles & Cake, it’s been an amazing year. Of course, 2013 for us marks the launch of our very first edition!! Since, there’s been lots to celebrate, take in and be proud of, and of course lots of learning and developing ideas for a bigger and better Ruffles & Cake in 2014! One of the highlights for us this year has been our Win your Wedding Competition. Having the support of so many amazing suppliers in Townsville come together to give away a wedding (yes, nearly an entire wedding!) was something very special - and of course the amazing response we received by you! Our lucky winner’s Nathan and Larissa have been busy planning their big day - locked in for February 22nd, 2014! Catch up on how they have been going on page 40. As we ride out what’s left of 2013, we give thanks to those who have helped make Ruffles & Cake stay available to you, our readers. To you, we also say a huge THANK YOU for supporting us, writing in and submitting your photos, ideas and feedback! Without that, there would be no Ruffles & Cake!! Keep it up, North Queensland. We hope you love what’s inside another packed edition of Ruffles & Cake! Be sure to grab yourself an icy cold drink, sit in the aircon and enjoy! Wishing you all a safe and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

“I definitely think its appropriate to have an adults only wedding. It’s shouldn’t been seen that children are being excluded, it’s just, some weddings are laid back relaxed and suited for children and others are more formal and not appropriate for children to attend.”

to not bring kids as its her day & she knows they can have tantrums so didn’t want any parents wishing the ground would open & swallow them up because of their kids being tired. I really think yes it’s the couple who are organising and paying for it all to decided. After all it’s their day.”

IT’S UP TO THE BRIDE AND GROOM, WE ARE GETTING MARRIED NEXT YEAR AND ARE NOT HAVING KIDS AT THE WEDDING... We want it to be a big party so don’t want kids running around and parents trying to sort them out when they should be having a good time too.”
KENDALL BROWN “My brother and his fiance’ are having a wedding in February and the venue has a room across the hall from the reception room which they are going to fit our with an xbox, dvd player, toys and games etc and hire some babysitters/child care workers to look after the kids during the reception so parents can relax with only being a minute or two away. With a lot of younger children in the family this is a great idea and the children don’t have to miss out on a very special day!”
MELI SSA JANE “Years ago it was the norm to have kids at a wedding, now its the norm to have no kids at a wedding because kids get bored, agitated & are completely unpredictable. I definitely agree with no kids at a wedding, particularly little kids.”
TARA ROBERTSON “I think it is fine to ask your guest no to bring children. Think of how bored the little cherubs would get, which is half the reason they act up at such events. It also give the adults a chance to relax and soak up the beautiful occasion. In the same case, I have 2 children 7 and 3 and plan to have them part of our wedding. they will do their bit and I want a babysitter on hand to take them away if they want. and at the reception I will have an area for the kids as we (for ours and the guests) and have things for them to join in on with the adult guests”

THE AFTER PARTY
By midnight the younger crowd (and you!) might just be letting loose and ready to party. The formalities are over, Great Aunty Jean has headed home and the night is young. Ask before hand about extending out your venue hire for a few hours past the usual 12am cut off. If your venue isn’t able to accommodate this, consider booking a private space at your favourite bar and arranging transport before hand to take you there so you can continue your celebrations until the sun comes up....just be sure to leave a day or two of recovery time before flying out on your honeymoon.
PHOTOGRAPH VIA YES MY BRIDE
PATTERNS Pattern are everywhere, from bold stripes and bright patterns through to sparkles, sequins or polka dots. Stripes and chevrons are the hottest trends, especially when used on your table linen. Don’t be afraid to use pattern for table runners, napkins or even the bridesmaid dresses themselves. For the groom add a flash of pattern through the pocket hanky, shirt or perhaps you are brave enough to sport a bow-tie? Go wild for fun bold graphics, delicate florals, gingham, paisley, spots, chevrons and stripes!

FUN! While the day is ultimately yours, it’s important to consider your guests enjoyment and careful plan the day to ensure a good time had by all, after all, you really are hosts at this ultimate party. Put a little thought into a few activities that will have your guests mingling and enjoying themselves. Croquet or lawn bowls are fun ways for people to interact and loosen up before the reception starts. Have ‘kid kits’ on hand for any youngsters you may have attending or consider hiring a babysitter for the night. Other cool ideas are fireworks, magicians, acrobatic shows, photo booths or even your local Mr Whippy van!!
THE ‘ALL-IN-ONE’ Less stress on your wedding day can only be a good thing, right? Opting for the All-In-One, i.e. ceremony and reception at one venue, is just that. The benefits you’ll experience are numerous: no trying to match up dates and times with numerous venues being a major plus. Your guests will also love it, especially your outof-towners who may not know their way around, and so will your pocket. Want to spend a small fortune on flowers at your reception? They become much more cost effective when your florist can move them straight into the reception once you’ve said your vows. You’ll also save heaps of time not being ferried around town for photographs and you can often reserve accommodation close by meaning you can arrange transportation to and from the venue for your guests.

Add glue the dowel / paddlepop stick and attach to the centre, on the back of the fan. We’ve used kraft glue in this instance, but we recommend a glue gun if you have access to one. 4. To add a special touch, tie either twine or ribbon at the base of the fan, and your done! It’s that easy!

TIP The word “Hooray helps double the fan as a cute sign for your ceremony as you walk back down the isle as husband and wife! Cute, right? You could create your own design that matches your theme, too. Such as; a tropical, vibrant card for an island wedding... you get the picture! Or, another idea is to double your fan as your wedding program, and make the fan double sided!

HOW WE ME T HE SAID We were first introduced to each other by my best friend in the uni club and we talked all night and found we had a lot in common.
SHE SAID Matt and I met through his best mate/best man Dave while out one night, I think it went a something like “here Matt, come and talk to Erica - she likes The Simpsons almost as much as you do.

THE FIRST DATE HE SAID We were friends for a long time before we got together and it sort of just developed so I don’t really remember a ‘first date.’
SHE SAID We were friends for quite some time so we never really ‘dated’ as such, so to be honest I don’t remember ever having a first date.

THE FIRST KISS HE SAID After a long night out just before we headed home, Erica threw herself at me. Who could blame her.
SHE SAID We were about to head home with friends at the end of a big night out, just before we got in the car, Matt snuck in a quick kiss completely catching me off guard. He then held my hand the whole way home - aww!
THE FIRST I LOVE YOU HE SAID I don’t remember when Erica first said it but I think I said it on our first valentines day.
SHE SAID Matt had organised a very romantic 1st Valentines Day date for me, he’d gone all out, roses, beautiful dinner and even a room full of heart shaped balloons but it was all trumped by him saying those 3 little words for the first time - he really could have saved himself some money there!

FINDING THE ONE HE SAID I don’t think you can put a time on it, it’s just something that you know.
SHE SAID I’ve known that Matt is the one for me for a long time but I don’t there there was one definitive moment where I realised. Maybe the first time he heard me sing and didn’t run for the hills?
32
THE PROPOSAL HE SAID Well it wasn’t a surprise as much as I thought. But it’s hard to surprise someone who is expecting it at every occasion. It was at sunrise overlooking Wallaman Falls.
SHE SAID Matt took me to Wallaman Falls to watch the sunrise (that’s a 3am wake up call). I was taking photos from one of the lookouts and Matt was behind me. He said “before you take another photo...” - I took another, then turned around to see him on one knee with the ring when he (with a slight shake in his voice and maybe even a couple of tears) asked me to marry him. It was really lovely.

THE WEDDING HE SAID The wedding is in May next year, Erica is doing a great job of the planning and organizing everything but when you have been planning it for twenty years it should be a breeze.
SHE SAID The wedding... Can’t come quick enough! I am feeling pretty organised, almost everything is chosen, booked and ready to go - there’s just all the little bits and pieces left. I’ve had so much fun planning, I’m lucky to have some wonderful people helping me. I honestly can’t wait for Matt to be my husband.

IT’S BEEN A LITTLE WHILE NOW SINCE WIN YOUR WEDDING WAS ANNOUNCED - HAS IT SUNK IN YE T THAT NEARLY EVERYTHING IS HANDLED FOR YOUR BIG DAY? I don’t think it has quite settled in just yet. I think it’ll hit home once everything is finalised and we get closer to the date.
THE WEDDING ISN’T TOO FAR AWAY - FE BRUARY 22 IN FACT! HOW HAS IT BEEN PLANNING A ‘QUICKER THEN EXPECTED’ WEDDING? It hasn’t been too bad actually. We’ve been very forrtunate that we haven’t had to shop around as such because all the vendors have been provided.
WHAT THEME / STYLE HAVE YOU GONE FOR FOR YOUR BIG DAY? The theme/style has been evolving. It was originally going to be a vintage feel but it’s now going to be a more classic take on vintage.

WHERE HAVE YOU SOURCED YOUR INSPIRATION? Our inspiration has come from the wonderful vendors. Unfortunately I wasn’t the little girl that had their wedding planned out at a very early age so this has been evolving as I speak to everyone!
WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST EXCITING PART OF THE PLANNING PROCESS? The most exciting part would have been picking my dress. It was kind of an overwhelming process with so many dresses to choose between. I picked up a dress that I thought I would ‘humour’ just to see how it looked on. I walked out in it and everyone gasped at it. That’s how I knew that was my dress. So exciting!

HOW HAS THE PLANNING BEEN GOING WITH THE WIN YOUR WEDDING SPONSORS? TELL US ALL ABOUT THE LITTLE DE TAILS... ! (WITHOUT GIVING TOO MUCH AWAY TO NATHAN!)
The sponsors have been so helpful! - there’s so much to say! I’ve picked a stunning dress from Belladonna - something I never thought I would have worn but I love it so much. This selection has dictated the choice of bridesmaids dresses and has set the theme for the wedding. Margaret at Mercure has been outstanding with getting our ceremony and reception together! For the ceremony alone, Lynda has given us some fantastic ideas to keep it a little unique for us, and a way to incorporate our families into the ceremony a little more. Our rings from Angelo and Renee at Loloma are stunning!! Fiona from Paper Fantasy has done an amazing job of our invitations to keep with the theme. For the ceremony - We’re so in love with them. After speaking with Capelli and Urban Miss, I’m so excited for how they’re going to make me look. Hannah from Tutu Society has helped me pick the cutest dresses for my twin nieces that will be my gorgeous flower girls. Danielle at Townsville Wedding Flowers and Designs has helped me pick out some amazing flowers especially with my lack of knowledge of flowers - I’m excited to see how they turn out! Flash Photobooths and Pooles are all ready to go and we’ll finalise details once we get closer to the date. Skye Bree has been fantastic in helping us determine the feel for our photos and suggesting some funky locations.

WHAT’S LEFT TO DO BEFORE THE BIG DAY? Not too much of the big ticket items to go fortunately! We just need to organise the cake, determine the grooms and groomsmens attire and plenty of other small stuff such as writing vows etc. Oh, and speak with Sarah at Dreamscene Events, we can’t wait! HOW DID YOUR OWN LABEL ‘SAMANTHA WILLS’ COME ABOUT? When I first moved to Sydney from Port Macquarie, I was just working as a retail assistant and I was selling my jewellery on the weekend at Bondi Markets. It got to the point where I was still working fulltime throughout the week but I was making more money in one day’s work at the markets then a full week of work in retail. A friend of mine was showing different brands at Australian Fashion Week and there was an element called ‘The Source’, it’s like a trade show where designers could go and show their collections. I thought, you know what I’ll give it a shot! The showcase was

T E LL U S AB OU T YOU R W E DDI NG S T Y L E A N D W H AT Y O U E N V I S I O N E D F O R T H E D AY ? My style is definitely that of an organic rustic nature. I guess its because I see and set-up a lot of weddings that are based around ‘bling factor’ so my own personal style is almost at the opposite end of that scale. I like a ‘natural’ style of wedding, and was going for a style that was relaxed and not too formal. I love bringing in different textures such as wood, hessian, lace and tin. I also love anything crafty and wanted hand-made elements to be a big feature of my day, so that my guests could see that I had gone to extra effort for them. I also wanted to keep costs down and show people what can be achieved on a small budget. My style motto in a nutshell, “if you’re going to do something, do it well”. Don’t do anything by halves.

HOW DID YOU BRING YOUR VI S ION TO LIFE? I wanted to have a wedding that wasn’t just a recreation of another wedding I have already done, or else I would have felt like I was cheating myself. I challenged myself to create something that not only I hadn’t seen before, but something that my guests would feel was unique also. But I also didn’t want it to look fake, so I needed a venue which would complement the style and the Hidden Valley Cabins were just perfect. I have always wanted an overhead canopy of fairylights, so after seeing the Hidden Valley Cabins function area, I knew this would be possible. I wanted to totally transform a space and show people how effective a little bit of decorating can look in an otherwise blank canvas venue. I also decided that I didn’t want anything too girly, especially because 60% of our guests were male, I wanted a wedding décor that even they would think was great looking and not just the girls. So a Rustic-Garden theme was chosen!

DON’T FORGET THE GUESTS Organise something for guests while you are off having photos taken. It doesn’t have to be anything big or cost an arm and a leg, but something pre-planned will ensure they don’t feel forgotten about. This will also make for a better atmosphere at the reception! Oh, and remember - don’t listen to “Who cares about the guests, they’ll be right, its YOUR day, it’s all about YOU”. No matter how much you spend on your dress, jewellery, shoes, hair and make-up, the extra money you spend on looking after your guests and giving them an enjoyable night to remember will make you far more happier and give you far better memories than anything you are wearing.

FAMILY LOVE “We had my 4 cousins and Tim’s nephew as our flower girls and page boys. They were all so excited to be involved as most had never been to a wedding.”

THE DRESS “I found a few dresses online and in local bridal stores that I loved but couldn’t afford, so I contacted an etsy designer by the name of whitesrose. It was perfect. She did such an amazing job at creating my vision. It was a bit nerve wracking buying my dress online but it was all worth it in the end.”

SPECIAL MOMENTS “Definately seeing my parents after I had put my dress on. It was also super special to have my little sisters as bridesmaids.
THE EMOTIONS “All I could think of walking down the isle was ‘Walk quicker Dad!’ I really wasn’t prepared for how emotional I would be. It was so amazing to see Tim waiting there and I could instantly feel how nervous and excited he was, it was a moment I will remember for the rest of my life.”

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS “We bought our first house last year on 4 ½ acres, and we knew we wanted the memories of having our special day at our home. This way we could have whatever we wanted and people could party on as long as they liked. It’s nice to think that someday when we have children running around our backyard we can say that’s also where we celebrated getting married.”

MOVIE MAGIC “We didn’t mean to have a theme as we were just aiming for it to be ‘us’ but it definitely ended up having a vintage/country feel to it. I wanted our guests to have as much fun as they would at a country fair that you see in movies and tv shows and from all reports everyone did. We had a band, The Wee Johnnys, a lolly bar where guests could help themselves and a Mr. Wippy van!”

BIG LIFE DECISIONS “Tim & I are the kind of couple who are pretty straight forward and always have a plan for those ‘big life decisions’ but we just couldn’t wait to kickstart the next chapter of our lives so after Tim proposed we decided to get married in 12 weeks. Planning a wedding in such a short amount of time was stressful and everyone thought we were crazy but neither of us would change a thing. I could never thank our friends and family enough for helping us pull off a wedding in 12 weeks.”

THE DRESS “I had originally chosen a beautiful vintage Chantilly lace dress however it was butchered in the alterations process. I was beside myself and started to ring around to make appointments to try on dressed. My first stop was Jo at The Bridal Palace and when I spoke to her on the phone she said ‘I think I have the perfect dress for you’. When I saw it on the hanger I was unsure, but as soon as I put it on I knew it was The Dress. I loved it more than the dress I was originally planning to wear.

OUTDOOR WEDDING If you’re wedding and reception are taking place outdoors, take a moment to think about the comfort of your guests. Parasols and paper fans are an inexpensive way for guests to keep cool, while providing pashminas and woollen throws and blankets will keep your guests cosy in the cooler months.

THE RIGHT PLACE “When we first visited our venue we immediately envisioned a lively family party on the lawns of Linden Gardens. We knew right away that this was the place for our big day. Finding this perfect spot really helped us to shape our wedding into what it became, and everything from the games, to the dinner, to the pinatas, and the dancing leaves us with joyful memories. When numerous friends and family members told us this was the best wedding ever! We were thrilled to see our vision had come to life.

F AV O U R I T E H O N E Y M O O N M E M O R Y There were lots of favourite moments but climbing the glaciers at Franz Josef & Mt Fox followed by a swim in the hot pools was a definite highlight.
SPECIAL MOME NT Whilst we were taking in the amazing view at Lake Tekapo we received the best phone call from our close friends announcing their engagement. It was extra special because they caught the bouquet and garter at our wedding. We can’t wait to share their special day with them soon!!
BEST EXPERIENCE The amazing St John Observatory. The sky was so dark you could see such amazing detail. We were lucky enough to have a beautiful clear sky on the night of our tour so we could even see the dark patches in the Milky Way & Magellanic clouds on the outskirts of the Milky Way (google it). It was amazing to see Saturn’s rings through a gigantic telescope too!
G R E AT A DV E N T U R E Trying out snowboard at Cardrona for the very first time. Kobie was hitting the big slopes in no time... I, on the other hand, needed a little longer to get my coordination in check.
MUST DO Spend time in Lake Hawea & Wanaka – both lovely little towns with lots of great locals haunts. Great beer and music scene in Wanaka.

M U S T E AT At the Altas Bar in Queenstown, the Spice Room in Wanaka, Plato in Dunedin & an amazing Chinese restaurant in Lake Tekapo. We also stopped in for lunch at Whitestone Cheese company – it was one of the best lunches we ever had!
MUST DRINK Kobie was very impressed with the huge selection of craft beers brewed locally. Kobie says to try to get your hands on Tuatara Double Trouble APA.
M U S T T RY Frisbee golf in the woods at Queenstown.

ANTHING ELSE WORTH DOING / VISITING / MENTIONING? Make sure you have enough time to take in all the amazing sights. There is so much to see and do! We can’t wait to go back and visit the North Island.
