Our summer issue’s theme “Going The Distance”

could be defined as continuing to the end of a competition or completing a task or duty—often with the connotation that it is arduous in some way. What about business? How you excel in the future depends on the decisions you make today. RUG INSIDER’s Business Contributor Aric Morrison compares today’s business climate to a boxing match in Seeing Gold. It’s an analogy that I think we all can relate to especially in these difficult economic conditions. Morrison, an accomplished author, has a new book out, “Heavenly Peace” available on Amazon. In Contributing Editor Cecile Corral’s Summer Market Preview, she states “if it’s July this must be Atlanta and Las Vegas Markets!” Isn’t that the truth! As we prepare for the busy market seasons, Cecile Corral goes the distance talking to leading exhibitors regarding the upcoming markets. When it comes to going the distance, David Samad of Samad, has the medals to prove it. In the 90s, David Samad ran his first New York marathon in honor of a dear friend who lost his fight with cancer. Samad has been running ever since with 82 marathons under his belt—and no plans to stop. See the story Rug Runner by Contributing Editor Alex Milstein. I would like to bring more human interest stories like Samad’s to our pages. If you have interesting passions or hobbies that are newsworthy, feel free to email me to be included in a future issue. We would like to share them with our readers in an attempt to bring us all closer together. We are excited about the upcoming “must-see” rug events on tap for early September in New York City and Secaucus, NJ. Cover Connect New York hosts its second annual event September 11-13 in New York City, and The Rug Show celebrates its tenth year and returns as an in-person event September 14-16 in Secaucus, NJ. We’ve got you Covered! You will find important information regarding both shows in this issue. Register today for these events. This will surely be a busy week for all in the rug world. See you this summer at the markets!

Changing times

demand adjusting our course for victory. Nothing comes easy; championships are born from careful design.

26 26

InBUSINESS | SEEING GOLD ith each new day, there tends to be a general feel as a society; we have slowly worked our way through some of our more unique moments with the recent Covid disruption. Life as we know it changed immeasurably, forcing us to first look inward at our sense of well-being and then plan for different futures in this new world. Thankfully, it seems our worst days may have rested forever, leaving in their wake a new and different way of setting ourselves for a brighter tomorrow.

W

When society is forced to shutter its windows and securely bolt the door from ongoing uncertainty, the impact on people trying to make a living quickly becomes tangible. The business community has undoubtedly endured much, but nothing like the last few years has thrown in our direction without much-advanced notice. Three years ago, we had two choices; accept failure and allow our storefronts to remain a distant memory or sharpen the pencil and plan for a new long-distance comeback.

formidable opponents to disruption are those who understand there is always time to get back up and start swinging again. In short, to believe any of us will win every round without hitting the canvas once or twice is unrealistic. There are those twelve opportunities in a boxing match for a reason. At the end of it all, we need to reinvest in those ideals that once made us believe in our business. It is about the battle over time. Most of us have already proven an incredible sense of persistence and drive to push forward during the short term. Winning the short-term battle for growth or viability may not be sustainable in the long run. On occasion, the spotlight over the ring needs to highlight a more extended push for greatness. Customer preferences, supply chain management, and diversification should all be considered fundamental benchmarks down the road. ARE YOU PLANNING FOR THEM?

Many of our decisions made today have the best interest of tomorrow behind them.

Surviving a chaotic environment like the one we are casting away takes incredible resolve, fortitude, planning, and vision. After weathering such a storm, now is the chance to reevaluate our current strategic models entirely. However, none of us can thoroughly plan for the unknown. We can prudently work on repositioning for the long haul should the roads ahead be paved with more sudden disruption cracks. As an owner, I see the current way of looking at our positioning as analogous to a boxing match. The very first step to coming out on top and winning the world title is to set a strong foundation for the discipline required in a regimented training schedule. In other words, mapping out the longer-term vision begins with a plan. Success is not born overnight; it takes time to achieve greatness. It also demands acceptance to realize that many of our decisions made today have the best interest of tomorrow behind them. For a boxer lacking long-term vision, a career can be short without preparation and foresight to anticipate the next move in the ring. Business reacts the same way; without planning and knowing what it takes to go the distance, many start-up companies find themselves down for the count before the end of the first round. There are twelve segments to a boxing match. Each one is carefully mapped out. The same rings true when fighting for your viability. There will be occasions when setbacks to business occur, such as what we have just experienced. The most

Do you view your business as a marathon, not a sprint, twelve rounds instead of one, or a journey rather than a short-term experience? If the answer is yes, you are already ahead of your competition. Stay focused on what is working, and never be afraid to refine things. If the answer is no, perhaps a shift is necessary. Spend some time and truly look into the future. Anticipate where you see your business heading and assess if it’s going in that direction. It is never too late to readjust, as we have all recently discovered. One of the fundamental keys to sustainability is knowing when to slow down or speed up your pace, when to pivot and when to stay put, and when to believe in tomorrow rather than obsess about what is happening today. Sure, the ring mat may be cold when you are down, but it doesn’t mean that you need to experience it all twelve rounds as a business owner. Plan for a few more sips of water in the corner and then come out swinging again. Changing times demand adjusting our course for victory. Nothing comes easy; championships are born from careful design. There is a belt with your name inscribed on it. How far down the road it becomes real depends on how carefully you plan to accept it. SUMMER MARKET PREVIEW

Retailer + Designer Traffic Poised for In-Person Pickup, Post-Pandemic BY CECILE CORRAL, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

IF IT’S JULY, THIS MUST BE ATLANTA AND LAS VEGAS.

T

he home fashions industry is reconvening this month—first at the Atlanta Market July 12-18, and then again at the Las Vegas Market July 24-28—to shop the latest and greatest in area rugs and much more. The area rug category represents “a key asset” and an integral component to the markets’ whole home resources, noted Scott Eckman, executive vice president and chief revenue officer of International Market Centers (IMC), the organizer of the Atlanta and Las Vegas markets. As such, area rugs are strategically positioned throughout Atlanta Market’s Home Décor Collection “to improve accessibility for buyers,” he continued. Based at the AmericasMart, the Atlanta Market includes almost 30 rug resources showcased in the eight-floor home décor showroom collection as well as in the Home Accents & Home Furnishings temporary exhibits—all in Building 1.

This season welcomes two new rug showrooms: Aleph Home in space 10A-5 and Spura Home in space 10-A-7; plus one rug showroom expansion— Devgiri Exports in space 9-A-23. “We are excited to grow these important resources with new brands and expanded presentations as we welcome the design and retail community to Atlanta this summer,” Eckman said.

The area rug category represents “a key asset” and an integral component to the markets’ whole home resources. SCOTT ECKMAN, IMC

Similarly at Las Vegas Market, housed in the World Market Center, area rugs are “a major component of our complete offerings,” Eckman said. The 40+ on-site area rug resources are distributed across the furniture and home décor permanent showrooms occupying 19 floors in Buildings A, B and C as well as at the two temporary exhibit locations—B2: Home Furnishings Temporaries and Gift and Home Temporaries in the Expo. One new rug showroom is making its market debut this season—Orlena Home. Additionally, there is one rug showroom expansion—Central Oriental; and two area rug showroom relocations—Art Carpet/Art Home and Elite Home Fashions. “Rug brands are tapping Las Vegas Market’s power to reach influential west coast designers and retailers with this summer’s resource expansion accelerating that growth trajectory,” he added. Summer markets are typically quieter than their more bustling winter counterparts in January. But this time around, area rug exhibitors are optimistic customer presence will be stronger than usual, fueled by two segments of shoppers: • Mass merchants seeking affordably priced machinemades in durable and easy-care constructions; • Designers and interior decorators on the lookout for upscale handmade styles and customizable programs to serve their own clients’ needs. As such, national big-box retail chains are poised for a comeback this season after dodging recent markets for fear of Covid, said Kaleen Rugs’ chief operating officer Monty Rathi. “It has been over two years that [national big-box retail] buyers have not attended the shows,” he said, “and now they are very excited to be traveling back again, meeting in person with vendors, touching and feeling products.”

HRI, Arizona in black and white (top) and Glaze in blue 30

Kalaty echoed those sentiments. The multi-generation, family-operated rug company forecasts “a good turnout of

customers at Las Vegas, no doubt, due in part to customers finally feeling comfortable again with face-to-face markets,” said company spokesman Farshad Kalaty. Customers’ return to in-person shopping adds relevance and importance to this month’s markets, he added. “Customers are eager to actually see what’s new and fresh and to be able to actually touch products at markets again,” Kalaty went on. “No photo or video can compare to seeing something in person.” Harounian Rugs international (HRI) points to the evidence—progressively improving buyer attendance trends over the past three market seasons (Winter 2022, Summer 2021 and Winter 2021)—to justify its “very good traffic flow” expectations for Las Vegas Market. “Our ratio of sales to showroom visits continues to be high, so our expectations for…orders from specialty retailers, furniture stores and design firm accounts are higher than in the past two years,” explained Greg Jordt, executive vice president, sales and marketing.

Similarly, Oriental Weavers president Jonathan Witt said the “much better than expected” High Point Market in April buoys his hopes for business this summer. “We feel positive about the Las Vegas Market,” he said. “At this point it appears that retail buyer traffic will be back on par with pre-pandemic summer shows."

custom and one-of-a-kind programs catering to our customers less impacted by inflationary pressures." As Riley suggested, the designers and interior decorators community has rapidly become one of the area rug category’s fastest growing customer segments.

With interior design business “in full swing” as the pandemic wanes, Feizy expects the traffic momentum to keep up at Las Vegas Market despite macroeconomic impacts in recent months from inflation and gas price hikes.

“Rugs are essential in great interior design, and they are an important vertical in our home furnishings resources,” cited Bill Furlong, CEO of JuniperMarket—the wholesale marketplace for sourcing gift, home décor and lifestyle products, powered by International IMC.

“We are still seeing consumers looking for in-stock items for their home furnishing needs,” said Mike Riley, president. “We have a number of sharply priced machine-made introductions while focused on the higher-end developments for our interior design,

Aside from Feizy, JuniperMarket’s other brand partners in rugs also include Bashian, Berbers Market, Exquisite Rugs, Kalaty, Nourison, Momeni, Orian Rugs, Rug Addiction, United Weavers of America and Vianha Inc.

At this point it appears that retail buyer traffic will be back on par with pre-pandemic summer shows.

Our customer base is seeking new supply chain avenues and we are here to make that happen.

CARISSA NEAR, UNIQUE LOOM “We are consistently adding new rug resources to the platform as top designers and retailers choose JuniperMarket to source for projects and refresh inventory,” Furlong added. On that same vein, Nourison is seeing an uptick in demand for custom orders and larger-size rugs, “which we expect to continue, as well as demand for low to mid-level collections for e-commerce.” To serve both sides of the pricing spectrum, the company is introducing its Reserve Custom Studio program of handmade rugs for higher-end customers, including designers and decorators, and also showcasing two new machine-made polyester collections— Sahar and Lynx—to satisfy mass retailers’ needs. Couristan’s concentration this season is somewhere in between—100 percent wool, hand-crafted rugs with lots of texture and contemporary two-tone colorways. “Think Hygge looks in mid-promotional price points,” said Larry Mahurter, vice president of marketing 32

and advertising. Also straddling is Kalaty Rug Corp., which continues to “focus on our company’s long heritage of high-end, hand-knotted area rugs in all style genres, weaves, textures and popular colorways” while at the same time adding new collections to its K-Two series of promotionally-priced collections of power-loomed, hand-loomed, hand-tufted and hand-knotted styles. “Despite the disruptions over the past two years, we will have an impressive array of new designs at Las Vegas, which represents one of the largest new product presentations in our company’s history,” he said. Unique Loom is coming to market stocked up with “fresh new looks, colors and designs” to fill gaps in the marketplace created by pandemicprompted delays. “We're expecting swift paced market traffic,” said Carissa Near, account manager. “Our customer base is seeking new supply chain avenues and we are here to make that happen.”

ed is an emotionally intense color that demands attention like no other—it is literally in our hearts and blood. Our summer‘s quest for passionate floor fashion was fulfilled in all constructions and qualities from classic to modern design interpretations and everything in between. Feizy‘s Rawlins Collection is printed but based on traditional Persian designs. Marketing Manager, Emily Stone May noted, “They are a great example of Feizy‘s commitment to innovation without losing our roots.” “Reds always make exciting fashion statements and fit comfortably into all décor style genres,” said Ariel Kalaty. “Whether we use them in big ways as ground colors, as border colors or in smaller ways as accent colors, reds of all shades have a long history in the rug world.” Nourison‘s Persian-inspired power-loomed Passion Collection in propylene is brilliant in its color story and pours forth an array of gold, lapis and amethyst details, all richly displayed on a ruby red ground. Carissa Near of Unique Loom said she feels red rugs don‘t get the love that they should. “Red reminds us of the tradition and the art of carpet weaving. It reminds us of our roots…” No worries. Inside MARKETS | COVER CONNECT NEW YORK

The second edition of Cover Connect New York will take place at The metropolitan Pavilion in NYC from September 11-13, 2022. Here’s what you need to know…

F

ollowing the success of the inaugural COVeR Connect New York in September 2021, the boutique show for leading high-end rug brands will return to manhattan this fall, offering an even greater range of handmade rugs to discerning retailers and professionals. The fair— curated and hosted by COVER magazine—is already viewed by many in the industry as an opportunity not-to-be-missed.

Human interaction was the missing ingredient for the rug industry during the pandemic. Rugs are inherently human, the way they’re made, the way we interact with them, that’s why these shows are so important.

This year’s event takes place in the heart of Chelsea at the landmark metropolitan Pavilion. “We have a new larger venue too in order to host twice as many exhibitors in an equally accessible midtown location,”says david Young, Sales and marketing director COVER.

Ned BakeR, TamaRiaN, CCNY 2021

“Overall it will be a larger show with the same dynamic buzz experienced in 2021. We expect to attract more buyers and for the COVER team to be onsite to host (travel restrictions made this impossible in 2021),” adds Young. “There will be more opportunities for social and educational events. We have many exciting new exhibitors as the show grows organically, and the exhibitors still remain at the highest caliber.” exhibitors have been carefully selected to ensure a wide variety of production and styles will be available to buyers under one roof. Cover Connect New York will bring to manhattan premier production from Nepal, india, Turkey and afghanistan: the most sought-after traditional, transitional and contemporary rugs in an exclusive, intimate setting. Visitors can expect to discover the latest design developments, be the first to see a fantastic range of brand-new collections, and be able to source a rug for every requirement.

David Samad reflects on completing 82 marathons and connects running to the area rug industry.

D

avid Samad, co-founder of the venerable wholesale rug firm, Samad, has been in the area rug industry his entire life. And while he hates to admit it, his 47 years in the business make him an industry veteran.

But rugs aren‘t Samad‘s whole life. In 1994, David signed up to run the New York City Marathon in honor of Simon Banilevi, a dear friend of his who had lost his fight to cancer the year before. When it came time to run in November of ‘94, he completed the 26.2-mile feat—Samad‘s first marathon and the longest distance he‘d run to date.

“If you‘d asked me to sign a waiver at the end of the race to say that was the first and last marathon I‘d ever do, I would have signed on the dotted line,” Samad says. But now, 28 years later, he‘s completed 82 marathons in 18 states across the U.S. and in 10 different countries around the world. It became more of a challenge for Samad, and he wanted more. That led him to London, and eventually India, Australia, France, Israel, Cambodia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada. “It was intriguing, and I started getting very serious about it,” he says. “I started running four to five marathons

a year. And actually in 1995, I ran my personal best—3 hours, 21 minutes and 34 seconds.” So, is he crazy? “It‘s just one of those personal challenges that I think I want to keep doing as long as I can,” Samad says. “Although I have to say it‘s not getting any easier.” While Samad is personally interested, he also says marathons have intrigued the minds of many people all over the world and have become a nice healthy hobby. He says that it became a personal goal for him and one that he loved accomplishing simply for himself.

Marathoners say the race begins at mile 20 and endurance is key. Like the rug business, it‘s not a race, it‘s a journey.

With a diagnosis of Asthma in his twenties, running, as his doctor told him was the best thing he can do. “In a way it‘s been the best medicine for me, to keep my lungs healthy,” Samad says. And when I see my pulmonologist he says I‘m defying what someone in my condition should actually be, and it‘s an amazing thing. So honestly, it‘s for my own good.” He also says there‘s a connection between the rug industry and marathons. “There‘s an old saying that seasoned marathoners say: the race begins at 48

mile 20 and endurance is key,” Samad explains. “In many ways, I equate that to owning our own business and the ethic behind that. Like the rug business, the marathon is not a race, it‘s a journey. It‘s all about competing, and you want to do it right, but at the end of the day, it‘s more about showing up! Am I ever going to win a marathon? Certainly not. But again, it‘s a courageous thing to do to just compete—it is precious.” Is there an ultimate goal Samad has in mind? “My goal is just to do one at a time, just get one more under my belt

and keep crossing the finishing line with a smile on my face, it’s a long road but a really rewarding one.” David is married to his lovely wife Johanna and they have three children and one grandson.

InANTIQUES | THE CLASSIC RED RUG

Antique Persian Sarouk Carpets

THE CLASSIC RED RUG BY RODNEY HAKIM

n this issue of RUG INSIDER we spotlight red rugs of today. When thinking of red rugs though, perhaps the first rug style to come to mind would be the red colors found in Antique Persian Sarouk carpets, which in many ways, are the true definition of the Classic Red Rug.

I

In this article, we will be exploring the history of antique Persian Sarouk Rugs, as well as some of the most prevalent variations of the Classic Sarouk Carpet, and what differentiates one type from another.

WHERE IN THE WORLD DO SAROUK CARPETS COME FROM? The antique Sarouk carpet has one of the most recognizable names and visual styles of all antique Persian rugs. Persian Sarouk rugs are characterized by their intricate curvilinear, floral designs, which are typically found in rugs that are woven in larger city centers, where more sophisticated weavers would work in organized workshops. Surprisingly, the village of Sarouk is relatively small—located in the Markazi Province, which is at the northern end of the Central Western Persian District of Arak. The village of Sarouk (sometimes spelled, Saruq or Saroogh), is far smaller than some of the other major Persian rug weaving centers, such as Tabriz in the northwest, Meshed in the northeast, or Kerman in the south. Village rugs also typically have more informal designs, with simpler geometric motifs, and with less sophisticated and rudimentary patterns than their city rug counterparts. 58

How, then, did the relatively small village of Sarouk become one of the epicenters of the production of some of the most recognizable floral city rugs in the area rug trade?

THE SURPRISING HISTORY OF THE ANTIQUE PERSIAN SAROUK CARPET The Persian village of Sarouk was long known as a traditional rug weaving center, but not necessarily for making the type of antique rugs that we would currently recognize as Sarouks. In all likelihood, the rugs woven in this village prior to the late 1800s were closer in style to village rugs woven in nearby Ferahan. In the late 1800s, several western exporters, including such prominent names as Ziegler & Company, set up rug weaving workshops in Iran and began the mass export of traditional Persian rugs to affluent buyers in the European market.

organized workshops, and ordering rugs with sophisticated designs and visual aesthetics for sale to their clientele in Europe. Perhaps the most distinguished style of rug that came to prominence in this period was the Persian Ferahan Sarouk Carpet, which borrowed some stylistic elements from the nearby weaving region of Ferahan, some aesthetic elements and weaving cues from the fine rugs being woven up north in Tabriz, and some of the masterful skills of the traditional weavers from Sarouk itself—all under the supervision of the entrepreneurial Western Exporters.

These Western Exporters were initially based in the northwestern weaving center of Tabriz, but would soon expand operations southward. The next major weaving center established in what we would refer to today as Arak —known in those days as Sultanabad. The village of Sarouk was conveniently located just thirty miles north of Sultanabad, and was desirable for its ease of access and for its strong history of rug weaving.

THE FERAHAN SAROUK CARPET In the late 1800s through the early 1900s, the Western Exporters revolutionized the rug production that was taking place in Sarouk, introducing well

Antique Persian Ferahan Sarouk rugs are typically characterized by a tight weave, short pile height, fine soft wool, a design aesthetic that favors central medallions and artfully articulated floral motifs, and more often than not, a combination of deep red and dark blue as the two most predominant colors.

THE MOHAJERAN SAROUK CARPET With the popularity of these fine Persian rugs, such as the Ferahan Sarouk and the Tabriz Hadji Jalili carpets booming in Europe and North America, especially after they were featured in the first World Oriental Carpet Exhibitions in Vienna and London in the late 1800s, the Western Rug Exporters based in Iran’s northwest needed to boost their carpet production and also, the variety of their rug offerings. Enter the Mohajeran Sarouk Carpet. Much like with the popularization of the Ferahan Sarouk carpet style, based on augmented versions of the native rug weaving from the villages of Ferahan and Sarouk, the next rug type to come into fashion for export to the West was the Mohajeran Sarouk Carpet. The story of the Mohajeran Sarouk is quite similar to that of the Ferahan Sarouk, as Mohajeran was also a traditional weaving center near the small village of Sarouk. Under the stewardship of the Western Exporters, it also became a major hub for the production of new variations of the ancient Sarouk, and export to Europe and eventually to the Americas. The rugs traditionally being woven in Mohajeran were thicker in pile and more decentralized in their design aesthetic than their counterparts in Ferahan. When these traditional Mohajeran style rugs were brought together with the new generation of rugs being produced in Sarouk under Western supervision, the Mohajeran Sarouk Carpet style was born. These Mohajeran Sarouk carpets became highly popular from approximately 1890-1920 and were known for their dense knotting, thick and supple wool pile, maximalist repeating floral designs, and deep, rich, red and blue colors.

The thicker wool pile was particularly attractive to overseas buyers, who were drawn to these rugs for the additional sturdiness and resistance to wear they offered, which was seen as an upgrade to the thinner pile and softer wool of the prior Ferahan Sarouk-style carpets.

somewhat dark, with navy blues and dark reds predominating.

THE JOSAN SAROUK

The Josan Sarouk style rose to prominence from approximately 1900-1930, but didn’t have as great a level of production, popularity, or prestige as the prior generations of Ferahan Sarouk and Mohajeran Sarouk carpets.

Another style that became popular during these waves of exports of the Ferahan Sarouk and Mohajeran Sarouk rugs was the Josan Sarouk. Like the Ferahan and Mohajeran Sarouk carpets, Josan Sarouks were derived from the original weaving of the nearby village of Josan. The Josan village, which is located somewhere between Sarouk and another weaving center, Malayer, had its own style of rugs, which were stylistically somewhere between the Ferahan and the Mohajeran. Rug production from Western Exporters, which previously had much success with the Ferahan Sarouk and Mohajeran Sarouk carpets, turned for a shorter time to the Josan Sarouk carpet. The Josan Sarouk carpets combined many of the features of both the Ferahan Sarouk and the Mohajeran Sarouk rug styles, with the central medallions of the Ferahan Sarouks, and the repeating floral motifs of the Mohajeran Sarouks. The pile was neither as thin as the Ferahan Sarouks, nor as thick as the Mohajeran Sarouks. The colors tended to be

Their construction and appearances lent themselves, in some ways, more toward the appearance of Malayer rugs than Sarouk rugs, causing many to refer to them as Sarouk Malayer carpets.

THE PAINTED SAROUK In the first quarter of the Twentieth Century, a shift occurred in the demand for the various Sarouk rugs and other rug styles being sold by the Western Exporters, with buyers in North America catching on and demanding more and more of the kinds of rugs that had become all the rage in Europe for the prior few decades. Whereas the buyers in Europe favored the classic style of the Ferahan Sarouk carpets, but appreciated the thickness and durability of the Mohajeran Sarouk carpets, the buyers in the Americas had their own distinct preferences, in both color and design. The buyers in the Americas wanted thicker carpets, preferring the Mohajeran Sarouk style, but did not particularly care for the color combinations of the Mohajeran Sarouks. 59

InANTIQUES | THE CLASSIC RED RUG Thus, the Western Exporters crafted a newer generation of Sarouk rugs, specifically for export to the Americas, which were close in style to the Mohajeran Sarouks, while being somewhat cruder in their production, and less expensive for buyers overseas. The color in the primary field was often a rose color, and not a deeper red.

cally with the carefully calibrated tastes of American buyers in mind. This newer generation of Sarouk rugs, characterized by its rich reds and blues, its thick and sturdy construction, and its repeating but relatively uncluttered floral designs, became immensely popular in the United States.

A new trend emerged, roughly in the 1910s to 1930s, where American buyers would import this newer type of Sarouk rug from Iran, but did not care for the rose colored fields. The American audience would therefore have the rugs chemically washed, so as to strip out the undesirable colors, only to be painted and recolored with deeper and more intense reds and blues, which were more popular at that time.

PGNY Rug 26526 Antique Persian Sarouk Carpet 20’7”H x 12’7”13’8”

These so called “Painted Sarouks” became increasingly popular, to the point that Western Exporters in Iran shifted their production to produce Sarouk rugs for the American market—better aligned with the buyers’ tastes—with richer, deeper reds, and increasingly thick, durable construction.

THE AMERICAN SAROUK The result of this shift in weaving, to align with the taste of the American customer base, was a new generation of Sarouk rugs, woven from approximately 1920-1950, which were colloquially referred to as the “American Sarouk.” These Sarouk rugs were still being hand made under the supervision of the Western Exporters in the village of Sarouk in Iran, but were made specifi60

These American Sarouk rugs became so popular that this style would replace the Ferahan Sarouk, Mohajeran Sarouk, and Josan Sarouk styles as the most desired, most woven, and most exported type of Sarouk hand woven in Iran. As the following decades passed, and other Persian rug styles, such as the “American Kerman” style, with its central medallion and open primary field, also became very popular, the American Sarouk followed suit, and began exporting countless versions of the Sarouk rugs being made for the Americas, but with the “medallion and open field” design configuration instead. These latter two styles of American Sarouk rugs, both with the repeating floral design and with the medallion and open field design, remain enduringly popular. When most people think of Classic Persian Rugs today, these Sarouk rugs are among the most common types that come to mind.

In the various types of antique Persian Sarouk rugs delineated here, one commonality is the most popular and most predominant color red. The reds in these different generations and styles of Sarouk rugs all vary, with some having deeper and richer shades of red, and others having softer shades. Regardless of the shade, these red hues needed to be sourced from the natural environment of the weavers, as the use of synthetic or chemical dyes wasn’t prevalent in Persian rug weaving until roughly the 1940s and 1950s. In this earlier era, from the late 1800s to mid 1900s, the primary sources for red and other hues included plants, flowers, roots, and insects. Of these natural resources, the two most commonly used were madder and cochineal. Madder comes from the madder root, a floral source relatively easy to procure and to process—typically used for lighter shades of red. Cochineal refers to the carmine color derived from a series of insects, to create richer and deeper shades of red. If this issue of RUG INSIDER is “Out for Blood,” then this brief history of the Persian Sarouk Rug is about as bloody good as is fit to print in a family-friendly publication! pgny.com
