The family owned business has been exporting flower bulbs to the United States and Canada since 1946. Currently we farm over 250 acres of crocus, hyacinths, daffodils and tulips and we are one of the largest growers and exporters of bulbs in the Netherlands.

Since 1910 All our bulbs are originally shipped from the nursery of Ruigrok Flowerbulbs, in De Zilk, Holland. Our company has grown and traded bulbs since 1910 and is still a family owned business. The modern nursery covers 250 acres of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocus in the southern and northern bulb district. Our crew takes great pride in growing our premium flower bulbs and closely monitors the fields during the growth cycle of the bulb. Our peak season lies in the summer, when the bulbs are harvested, cleaned, graded, packed and shipped all over the world.

The tulips in this section are also called Kaufmanniana and Greigii tulips. They are the earliest to appear in spring and stand out for their unique flower shapes. Our planting stock is sourced from bulbs that did not reach top size the previous spring. We begin planting daffodils and crocus in late September when the soil temperature reaches 52 F. Hyacinths and tulip soon follow until our finish date in early December. To keep our soil healthy, we practice crop rotation. If a field is used for tulips one year, it will be many years before tulips are re-planted there again as we cycle numerous other fall and spring planting bulbs thru that land. As good drainage is vital, we keep water levels low. During our peak, we can plant 8 acres per day; last fall, we planted 15 acres of crocus, 60 acres of hyacinths, 30 acres of daffodils and 120 acres of tulips.

All bulb fields are inspected by the BKD The Flower Bulb Inspection Service (BKD) is commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture to perform flower bulb quality and quarantine inspections and import and export inspections on all bulb crops. It guarantees the quality of flower bulbs in the Netherlands. After planting, all flower bulb lots are registered. Bulb samples are taken and examined in the labaratory. In spring, the bulbs are inspected visually in the field at least once for viruses, bacteria and nematodes. Before shipping, the BKD also carries out export inspections in our warehouse and issues export certificates for flower bulbs that are destined for all non - EU countries.

Harvest time in June and July The period after blooming is most important and determines the size of the crop. Flower bulbs grow until their foliage has died down. It all depends on the weather. In the bulb district we have a oceanic climate, which is perfect for flower bulbs. They prefer moderate weather in May and June, so that the bulbs have more time to grow. If it does not rain, we irrigate the fields several times before the harvest. However, an early heat period can cause the plants to die down too early, resulting in a disappointing yield. First we dig our crocus crop, followed by tulips and hyacinths, and last the daffodils. Daffodils are lifted first and then left on the field for several days, enabling the bulbs and their roots to dry. This summer we will harvest 225 acres of bulbs. Depending on the weather we dig around 8 acres per day.

Bearded (Germanica)

Bearded Iris are not bulbs, but rhizomes. Unlike most spring bulbs and tubers, bearded iris do not need a cold period to produce flowers. This makes them ideal for areas with mild winters. As they are extremely drought tolerant they are also good for areas with little to no summer rain. Hardy in zones 3-10. Need a sunny position to bloom well. LANDSCAPE How to get the best out of your bulbs 1. Recommended planting time

The soil temperature needs to be below 55oF, so that the bulbs will start making roots before the winter takes off. It is no problem to plant later than the recommended planting time, but best before the first frost.

3. Soil conditions No particular soil is required for planting flower bulbs, as long it is well-drained. For best results, loosen the soil around 10” deep before planting and add some mulch, if the structure needs loosening. After planting, you may apply a slow release nitrogen based fertilizer. If the same area is used for tulips and hyacinths year after year, it is possible that Rhizoctonia will occur in the soil. To prevent the bulbs from being affected we advise to choose preferably a “fresh” planting location or add Rizolex to the soil.

5. Perennializing Many bulbs are perennial and can be left in the soil to return for years. Under the right circumstances the bulbs will soon multiply and come back in following years, like they have always been a part of the landscape. It is vitally important that the foliage is allowed to die down. The look of browning foliage that you may see (especially with daffodils) is all part of the process. Make sure to add a slow-acting fertilizer when the bulbs emerge from the soil as well as after flowering.

2. Planting depth and distance General rule is that the bulbs should be planted at a depth that is double their height. Larger bulbs must be planted in an upright position in the planting hole. Smaller bulbs can be scattered. The spacing of the bulbs depends on the visual effect you are looking for. If you mix varieties that have sequential bloom times, you need to plant the bulbs very close to each other. 4. Choosing the right combination of bulbs The selection of spring bulbs is extensive and many different effects can be achieved. In a successful bulb combination, not only the colors but also the flower shapes are balanced. A classic bulb planting consists of at least 6 bulbs (tulips, daffodils, hyacinths) per square foot. When mixing tulips with perennials this can be 3-4 bulbs. Hyacinths are often applied in classic flower beds. All varieties have more or less the same height, which gives a peaceful effect. Tulips and daffodils combine very well because of their shapes and colors. The more natural looking daffodils in soft tones with the fancy tulips in every possible color.

LANDSCAPE 6. Bulbs in lawns and grass strips The earliest flowering bulb types are the best choice for planting under grass, as the bulb foliage has to be allowed to die down before mowing. Some bulbs like chionodoxa, scilla or eranthis depend upon seeds for propagation. These seeds take about 6 -8 weeks after flowering before they are ripe. When the seeds fall from the plants, the mowing can start. Here are some suggestions: chionodoxa luciliae, crocus species and large flowering, eranthis, fritillaria meleagris, all daffodils, leucojum aestivum and scilla siberica.

7. Mass plantings of bulbs in beds and borders To enjoy perennial and rose borders earlier in the season, spring flowering bulbs can be added. As a bonus, the perennials will later hide the withering leaves of the bulbs. Large plantings of Hyacinths, Daffodils and Tulips add a beautiful multi-color effect to the border. Tulips make a lovely combination with wallflowers, pansies, and forgetme-nots.

8. Prolong the flowering period An informal effect will be achieved combining bulbs with different flowering times. This can be different types of tulips, like our mixed and solid colors on pages 12-13 or mixtures of different bulb types. Our long-lasting daffodil mixes can be found on pages 46-49.

9. Bulbs in flower containers Flower containers are being used more and more to upgrade the appearance of urban areas and access roads. Bulbs can play an important role in container planting, as the flowering can start as early as February with Crocus. Plant bulbs in layers (the bulbs flowering last are planted at the lowest level) or work with removable inner containers. The flowers can be replaced when their blooming period is finished. During the winter, too much water is dangerous to the bulbs. We advise to placing containers on blocks, so that the excess water can freely flow away. Use a layer of clay granules at the bottom of the container and add a layer of compost between the bulb layers. When choosing bulb types, we advise selecting shorter flowering types as they are less susceptible to wind damage.
