Depoldering Noordwaard (flood plain)
Lowering the dyke will create an inflow opening.
The Noordwaard (flood plain) is being depoldered by partially digging up the dykes on the river side and reducing the size of the ring of dykes. This will allow the river Nieuwe Merwede to flow through the Noordwaard (flood plain) to the sea more swiftly at high water. Furthermore, the water safety will increase in Gorinchem.

Dyke reinforcement Steurgat / Land van Altena and Bergsche Maas / Land van Altena Wherever river widening is impossible, additional dyke reinforcement work will be carried out. Along the Steurgat, between Hank and Werkendam, sections of the dyke will be improved.
Causes
Height
Primary river dykes along the Nederrijn and Lek do not meet the requirements set for these watercourses. Some sections of the dyke have to be improved to pass (regular) safety tests.
Solutions
Stability (piping)
Stability
Water seeps under the dyke (seepage), taking sand with it (piping). This weakens the dyke and will lead to breaches.
The dyke is too low. At high water, the river water flows over the dyke.

Water storage Volkerak-Zoommeer
Current situation
The Volkerak-Zoommeer (lake) is being prepared as a temporary storage site for river water during extreme situations. The water storage facility will provide protection for the southwest of the Netherlands in the event of storm surge barriers being closed in combination with very high discharge from the rivers - an exceptional combination. The likelihood of the Volkerak-Zoommeer water storage facility being utilized is 1/1,400 a year.

Height
Primary river dykes along the Nederrijn and Lek do not meet requirements set for these watercourses. Some sections of the dyke have to be improved to pass (regular) safety tests.
Wherever river widening is impossible, A28 additional dyke reinforcement work will be carried out. Sections of the dyke along the rivers Lek and Nederrijn ZEIST between U T R E C H THagestein and Opheusden will be improved.
Stability (piping)
High water pressure is causing the top layer of the dyke to deteriorate. This weakens the dyke.
Water seeps under the dyke (seepage), taking sand with it (piping). This weakens the dyke and will lead to breaches.
The dyke is too low. At high water, the river water flows over the dyke.

Dyke relocation at Hondsbroeksche Pleij The Pleijdijk (dyke) in the Hondsbroeksche Pleij has been moved land inward and a high water channel, a control system and a pond have been created. These interventions increase the drainage capacity of the rivers IJssel and Nederrijn during high water. They also maintain the agreed distribution of water discharge.
