In extreme situations, the Volkerak-Zoom Lake is rendered suitable as temporary river water storage. Deployment of water storage offers Southwest Netherlands protection in the event of closed storm surge barriers and high river discharge. This is an exceptional combination, which may occur once in 1400 years.
