RUI RODRIGUES SELECTED PROJECTS
I am Rui Rodrigues, a young architect born in April 1990, in Barreiro. In 2005 I’ve started the Visual Arts Course of Escola Secundária dos Casquilhos specialized in drawing and design where we organize several public exhibitions. In 2008 I´ve finished the course with a final average mark of 17. Still in 2008, I’ ve started my graduation in Architecture at the Universidade Lusiada de Lisboa, where it was possible to get to know important notions regarding the conceptualization of architecture projects. In 2012, I’ve finished the graduation in Architecture with a final mark of 15. Still in 2012, I’ve started the Master’s degree in Architecture at Faculdade de Arquitectura de Lisboa, of the key areas learned there it should be underlined Urban planning. Since the beginning I’ve wondered why in a contemporary town in which the small intermediate worlds of extended families and communities of neighbors are disappearing and we are often isolated in our domestic refuges. These unanswered question led in 2013 to the Dissertation and the Final Project of the Master’s Degree theme with the topic: “Re_Activate through the Void - From Urban to Human Scale” I’ve graduated in 2014 with an average mark of 15 and a mark of 18 in the Dissertation and the Final Project of the Master’s Degree.

CONTROL TOWER Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa | 2010 Mouraria | Lisbon A tower for communications of a naval traffic and fire prevention of the Baixa-Chiado should be placed on a strategic point of the city. It was chosen a place at the The plot chosen for the tower is located in the neighborhood of Mouraria, west of the hill of the Castle of São Jorge in Lisbon. It is an urban territory strongly marked by historic buildings of Lisbon such as the Castle of São Jorge and Lisbon Cathedral and its adjacent stairway and slope. The site lies between two distinct grids: Baixa with a regular grid which mostly served by offices and service areas and Mouraria’s zone with an irregular grid where there is more residential areas.

CAR PARKING BUILDING Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa | 2011 Baixa | Lisbon The choice of this block is due to the fact that it is a plot that links the Baixa and Rossio. Its location is essential to the parking lot to get the car coming from Figueira Square distributing them to the Ouro Street. Once it is in the historic center of Lisbon, because of the features found on site this project aims to recreate the concept of public garage, not only being a parking spot but a place to promote the exchange of polluting vehicles for smaller non polluting vehicles. In this project we use two “skins”, a lighter and translucent exterior facade that involves the building and outlines its public panoramic route and an internal thicker “skin” which consists in a gabion wall supported by a steel frame structure that will rationalize the access spaces, will confer good ventilation and the settlement of the slabs.

SALES PROMOTION STAND Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa | 2011 Praça da Figueira | Lisbon This project was developed in two phases: the projection of collective housing and of a sales promotion facility for that intervention. The dwelling will be built in the block which physically divides D. Pedro IV and Figueira’s squares. The first step of the project fell upon the construction of a sales promotion stand on the surrounding area of the block where the dwelling would be designed, this project would have to depict what the habitational project would became. The project concept is to create a lightweight structure for quick and easy assembly. This structure consists of two skins: the outer skin formed by a set of modules made from acrylic, galvanized steel, polystyrene and are bolted to each other, the whole being a self-supporting structure; on the other hand the inner skin is formed by panels PVC translucent panels, imparting transparency to the structure to enable the approach to building construction. This stand consists of several areas since the since the Lounge bar which acts as customer reception space through the exhibition space of the model with high-ceiling, panels and building images to the sales office on the top floor. The modular structure is detachable and takes various forms depending on the visibility / focus that is intended to give the building (more closed at the beginning of the work, more open in the culmination of it).

COLLECTIVE HOUSING Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa | 2011 Praça D. Pedro IV | Lisbon The concept is to create an internal street at a high rate tearing the building from one side to another of the block, exploring the extent to which a downtown building can be changed without compromising the environment or relations with the preexistence. This building is composed of two skins: an inner skin, which is characterized by being an adjustable front “built” by the user, consisting of a metallic support and perforated metal panels; the outer skin is a ventilated façade coated with zinc profiles. The typologies used are T4 and T6, the apartments are composed of an inner courtyard that marks the hinge between the social area near the entrance and the rooms area and the private spaces of the house, in order to give the social area.

STUDENTS RESIDENCE + SUBWAY Faculdade de Arquitectura de Lisboa | 2013 Campolide | Lisbon The concept of this project is to join two distinct programs, like a subway station and a Residence / Support for Students, emphasizing the moment when these two programs are united as one. For this, I intend to develop the concept of the traditional skylight and develop it throughout this project in order to exploit and value the building’s program. To the subway station, I intend to to be an element that stands out the urban level by connecting with the Students Residence and the Square both visual and programmatic. The main idea of this facade is to create a dynamic surface that interact with pre-existing elements and the new square just by opening or closing of the windows. This equipment is assumed as exceptional element in the Campolide area standing out from the others, the form of its facade is shaped according to the inhabitants needs. When the openings are all open it generates a very interesting space dynamic, suggesting from some approaches to form an origami. 3755 m2

In order to clarify the problem that derives from the emerging mutations of the city as well as the public space, it becomes essential to analyze the obsolete spaces in the city. 24th IBERIAN COMPETITON OF CONSTRUCTIVE SOLUTIONS Faculdade de Arquitectura de Lisboa | 2014 Matadero | Madrid In colaboration with David Vaz Pinto The project is located south of the city of Madrid in the old slaughterhouse in Madrid. Currently this building is able to accommodate various art forms such as music, painting, sculpture, architecture. Our proposal for Nave 8 attempts to respond to the needs of working spaces for artists and different relaxation and common areas. The program requires private areas for each artist, composed of a workspace (20 to 30m2) and a resting area (15 to 20m2), this area must accommodate one or two artists, a storage area and a grooming area. For each group of five private areas it should be created a common area that includes a space for meals, laundry and food handling. Starting from a central void containing several artists exhibitions at level 0 and several green spaces, ensuring that work areas are articulated from interconnecting modules positioned around cultural void. The design of each work area resembles a temple, trying to create an own unique artistic atmosphere in each module.

El proyecto se localiza al sur de la ciudad de Madrid en el antiguo matadero de Madrid. Actualmente este edificio se encuentra habilitado para albergar diversas formas de arte como música, pintura, escultura, arquitectura etc. La propuesta que presentamos para la nave 8 intenta responder a las necesidades de espacios de trabajo para los diferentes artistas así como espacios de descansos y áreas comunes (zonas de exposición de trabajos, comidas, etc…)
El programa exige zonas privativas para cada artista, compuestas por un espacio de trabajo (entre 20 y 30m2) y un área de descanso (de 15 a 20m2), debiendo esta zona de descanso alojar uno o dos artistas, poseer una zona de almacenaje e una zona de aseo personal. Para cada grupo de cinco zonas privativas deberían crearse una zona común que incluya un espacio para comidas, manipulación de alimentos y lavandería.

Partiendo de un vacio central que alberga exposiciones de trabajo de los artistas a nivel de “cota 0” y varios espacios verdes, procurándose que las zonas de trabajo se articulasen a partir de módulos que se comunicaban y giraban en torno al vacio cultural. Planta semi-sótano

Vista de uno de los espacios de exhibición e performances de la zona común.
Imagen utilizada para el diseño del techo, a través de una placa PLADUR TR fue posible la perforación deseada para obtener el diseño buscado.
La utilización de focos de luz por detrás de estas placas permitió la proyección de la imagen creando una atmosfera artística y propia para este espacio.
