OUR STORY Since the inception of the Alkmaarse Groothandels Unie in 1966, AGU has been on the forefront of innovation in bike wear. The iconic original rainsuit – launched in 1976 as a response to a competition by the Dutch Ministry of Transport – became a mainstay on many a rainy, windswept Dutch street. And when the company teamed up with the illustrious Peter Post-led Panasonic Team in 1984, the AGU name and its clover leaf logo became embedded in the hearts and minds of bike racing lovers ever since. This collaboration resulted in a wealth of experience for AGU, direct from the best of sources – the professional peloton. This experience was put to good use throughout the years. In 1990, with the company’s support behind her, Leontien van Moorsel went on to win 2 gold medals during the World Championships in Tokyo. Since that pivotal moment, Van Moorsel has ever been of great importance to women’s cycling in the Netherlands. In 1996, AGU embarked upon a long and successful stretch of supplying and sponsoring the Rabobank team,

which will forever be one of the biggest names in Dutch cycling history. This gave AGU yet more opportunities to cement their reputation and gain more experience in the process, building on and improving upon the apparel.

Jumbo-Visma. The wealth of knowledge and technology that AGU’s engineers and designers have accumulated over the past 40 years has found its apex in the best and fastest kits they ever produced.

These past 40 years of close involvement with the very highest levels of cycling resulted in a treasure trove of experience. These factors produced a new momentous partnership in 2019, when AGU was extremely proud to announce a collusion with Dutch WorldTour Pro Team

Making the best use of this rich heritage and valued experience ensures that AGU remains on the forefront of innovation in bike wear, no matter the riders’ level or ambition.

SINCE 1966

Icon

In 1976 AGU’s rain suit wins a prestigious award for the best Dutch rain suit, in a competition organized by the Dutch government to encourage cycling in the Netherlands. The suit goes on to sell more than a million throughout Europe, which is a major boost for the company.

Founding

On the 1st of May 1966, three bicycle wholesalers merge into the Alkmaarse Groothandels Unie and start work in an office with 14 employees. The beginning of our era.

Panasonic

AGU starts to supply the kit for Team Panasonic-Raleigh in 1984, its introduction in the professional peloton. Famous names as Steven Rooks and a young Erik Breukink bring the brand to a worldwide audience of cycling fans.

Bike Bags

1974 sees the launch of the ‘cycling pleasure’ theme. From this moment on, AGU will focus on developing practical products that are convenient for every day riding, such as the first bike bags. Back then, these were made in Japan, whose image was not up to par to how it is today. ‘Made in Japan’ labels even had to be removed from the bags once they arrived in the Netherlands!

Chamois

In 1989 AGU becomes the first company in the world to produce chamois padding from artificial leather, the fabric of which was by then only seen in expensive cars. Marketed as Nalini, these paddings were the result of extensive testing and innovation, a process that would continue to this very day.

Rabo

After having supplied the Panasonic, Koga and AGU-Continental teams for many years, in 1996 AGU partners up with Team Rabobank. A memorable episode in Dutch cycling history that would last for no less than 16 years.

Chamois II

Through the afore mentioned process of innovation, AGU introduces the first carbon fibre based chamois pads in 2011. Excelling in distribution of pressure and perspiration due to the use of carbon fibres, these antibacterial chamois pads were notable for their comfort and technical look.

Update

In 2018 AGU’s launches an updated version of its original award-winning 1976 rain suit, which then promptly wins another award by the ANWB, thus assuring that AGU’s rain suits will be a familiar sight on many Dutch streets for years to come.

The fastest kit possible

Heat

For the 2019 winter collection AGU releases a thermal jacket with an inbuilt heating system. This revolutionary jacket for cold weather riding is controlled by a USB-charged battery that gives the user 3 possible heating settings. This introduces a whole new chapter in facilitating rider to be comfortable in any condition, and on any road, without losing performance.

AGU’s partnership with Team Jumbo-Visma, since the start of 2019, raises the bar for performance orientated cycling kit. After a rigorous process of research, development and testing in cooperation with different institutes, a brand new Time Trial suit is launched, which proudly bears the moniker of being the fastest possible kit the company has ever produced. The techniques used in the suit would also find their way into the rest of the Team kit as well as the consumer collection. 11

TOP-CLASS SPORT AGU has a long history in top-class sport, and the company is still very proud to be able to contribute to the achievements of the teams we support, like Team Jumbo-Visma. Collaboration with these professionals provides valuable insight with which we can continue to enhance our apparel to the highest possible level. The cutting edge technology, fabrics and weaving used for the professionals now also trickles down into the rest of the collections, so riders at all levels are ensured of having the best possible gear at their disposal. Working with Team Jumbo-Visma’s riders and staff is fundamental to AGU’s Research & Development strategy. The collaboration has yielded innovative gear for all sorts of conditions the team is likely to face throughout the season. From a summer jersey made from water-resistant lightweight fabrics, to custommade fleece-lined thermal bibs for freezing weather, the riders can effectively focus on their performance in all instances without having to worry about external conditions. For the new Time Trial skinsuit, AGU developed and tested a variety of materials and fabrics in the wind tunnel of Eindhoven University of Technology. Incorporating feedback and experiences from those to whom it matters most — Primož Roglič, Tony Martin, Steven Kruiswijk, track racer Theo Bos, and their coaches — has resulted in the fastest kit the team has ever had. The partnership also gave birth to a new bibshort, using lighter fabrics with less seams whilst adding more compression in the legs where needed. For risky days, ceramic side panels were added to the shorts in a honeycomb pattern to protect from road rash in case of crashes – whilst not obstructing the legs’ motion in any way. The pros can choose between the Black320 and Red120 chamois, depending on their personal preference, just like all cyclists who opt for AGU bibshorts. These specific pieces of kit, and much more besides, have been tested by the team on the road for months now and have provided AGU with valuable feedback to incorporate in future versions, which will then be available in stores for everyday enthusiast riders.

MIPS

Added protection against impact The Multi Directional Impact System is a low friction liner which, added to the shell of a helmet, allows the helmet to slide relative to the head. This movement protects the skull against the rotational movement which occurs upon an angled impact. The effect of MIPS has been scientifically proven to decrease the risk of brain injuries.

Poray

Breathable waterproof fabrics Poray membranes were specifically produced by AGU to implement 100% wind- and waterproof protection in our apparel whilst maintaining an optimal level of breathability. Poray is measured in 10.000 or 5.000, which refers to the amount of millimeters of water per cm2 the fabric can withstand, also called a water column.

Storm Breaker

Extremely breathable water-resistant technology With its 99% windproof membrane, the Storm Breaker fabric protects your core from wind chill, but is yet breathable enough to allow for active cooling thanks to the tiny pores. Thus, your body temperature remains within the optimal range for performance. A Durable Water Repellent coating has been added to the fabric so it can easily withstand a short spell of rain.

HD II Lenses

Enhanced color and contrast High Definition II lenses have been developed to enhance colour and contrast in your field of vision. This means the lens yields more vibrant colours, but â&#x20AC;&#x201D; perhaps more importantly â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it also increases depth perception and highlights features in the surrounding environment that might otherwise go unnoticed. The laser blue finish enhances the reflective function of the lenses to protect your eyes from the sun. The lens surface has been treated with a Hydrophobic layer: raindrops will bead straight off. It also contains Anti-Fog properties for a clear view of the road ahead.

Polygiene

DWR

Bacteria that accumulate in wet or damp clothing can create unpleasant odors. Polygiene fabrics are coated with a layer of silver chloride which prevents these bacteria from piling up due to perspiration, so your treasured cycling gear remains odor-free for longer.

When a fabric is treated with a Durable Water Repellent coating, any (rain)water coming into contact with the material will roll straight off the coating, instead of being soaked up. This prevents your outfit from getting heavy and soggy with moisture. DWR is not 100% water resistant but it will be enough to keep you dry during short summer downpours.

Permanent odor control

Event

Premium breathable waterproof fabrics To stay dry and comfortable on the bike it is essential to wick perspiration away from the skin. The millions of tiny pores in eVent membranes work continuously to achieve this effect, unlike traditional membranes which only work when have already gotten wet. As a result, eVent keeps your body dry longer and more effectively, to support prolonged time in the saddle.

Durable water-repellent treatment

The orginal performance fabric Merino sheep produce a very fine and breathable type of wool that possesses extraordinary benefits for exercising. It offers cooling when it’s hot, and insulation when it’s cold. The wool moves perspiration away from the skin so you won’t get damp, and is supremely resistant to bad odors. On top of all that, the material is very soft to the touch, for a terrific level of comfort on the bike.

Smart Temp

Active cooling technology Smart Temp is an innovative textile technology that provides fabrics with the ability to interact with body temperature and dynamically respond to body heat. Basically, the cooling function is activated when you are hot and sweaty and deactivated once cooling is complete. Specifically designed for next-to-skin textiles, Smart Temp helps to ensure optimal comfort and performance in any condition, but is especially well suited to active riding during the summer months.

Coldblack

Reduces the absorbtion of heat

Dark textiles are renowned for absorbing heat and light. A Coldblack treatment reduces this absorption of warmth and so brings a notable improvement in heat management. It also guarantees reliable protection against harmful UV rays without affecting the look and feel of the fabric in any way.
