THE GENTLEMEN (18) W r i t e r / d i r e c t o r G u y Ritchie’s canon has been decidedly patchy of late, with clunkers like ROCK ’N’ ROLLA and his MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. re-boot only somewhat redeemed by his two SHERLOCK HOLMES capers. However THE GENTLEMEN is a glorious return to LOCK, STOCK form with Hugh Grant as Fletcher, a muck-raking tabloid hack using his criminal underworld nous to put one over on Matthew McConaughey’s Pearson, a sophisticated but violent gangster trying to retire from his hash-dealing empire. Grant delivers perhaps his greatest against-type performance since his Jeremy Thorpe impersonation in the t.v. docu-drama or his principled young doctor in 1996’s EXTREME MEASURES, and a stellar cast including Michelle Dockery as McConaughey’s ice-cool wife, Charlie Hunnan as his jaded lieutenant, Colin Farrell as a bent boxing coach and Eddie Marsan as the tabloid editor who must reluctantly deal with Fletcher. The language is hugely profane, the jump cuts a tad unnerving but this is Ritchie at his hugely entertaining best.
