Lauded for its colour-blind casting and impudent take on Charles Dicken’s semi-autobiographical masterwork, Armando Ianucci’s follow-up to the hilarious DEATH OF STALIN sees the director moving away from the biting satire of THE THICK OF IT and VEEP and into rather more whimsical story-telling. The ever appealing Dev Patel plays the eponymous hero as a young man, with Jairaj Varsani as his rather darling younger self, and although Ianucci messes with the novel’s chronology it stays on the narrative rails and is thoroughly engaging. In this latter regard the deployment of Tidla Swinton as imperiously barking mad Betsy Trottwood, Hugh Laurie as her equally batty lodger, Peter Capaldi as a self-denying Mr Macawber and Paul Whitehouse as kind-hearted Mr Pegotty are huge assets, with only Ben Wishaw as the initially obsequious Uriah Heap slightly failed to convince.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (18) Like Guy Ritche’s THE GENTLEMEN, Quentin Tarantino’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD marks a huge return to form, and indeed both films share a penchant for sly tension, intoxicating production design and quick-fire editing. However Tarantino paints against a bigger landscape in this case the gilded 1969 Los Angeles with Leonardo DiCaprio as fading TV action hero, Rick Dalton, and Brad Pitt, deserving his Oscar as Dalton’s stunt-man and probably only real friend, Cliff Booth. Morally if ambiguously supported by Booth, Dalton is trying to get ahead in movies, not helped by Al Pacino’s hilariously smarmy theatrical agent or Kurt Russell’s antsy stunt co-ordinator, and the script and performances are dripping with wry humour and, as you might expect, copious filmic references. But the gradual segue into the Manson family story – Dalton’s neighbour is Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie, reliably sensational) – augurs a jaw-dropping ending alone worth the ticket price.
