‘Tis the season for blockbusters and this summer’s two biggies are both latest episodes of venerable franchises with some surprising plot similarities. The first features 80 year-old Harrison Ford’s suitably world-weary archaeologist chasing all over the world for one half of Archimedes’ ancient mechanism, the titular Dial, that can apparently cause fissures in time. In this he’s sort-of aided by an untrustworthy Phoebe Waller-Bridger (t.v’s FLEABAG) playing the daughter of an old colleague (Toby Jones) who is sort-of in it for the money, both of them up again a mad ex-Nazi scientist, (a creepy Mads Mikklesen) who wants to combine both halves to create a world that Hitler dreamt of, but with him in charge. Masterful CGI manages to convincingly de-age Ford during the extensive first act and as you’d expect there’s a plethora of swashbuckling set pieces, some amusing nods to the previous films and a pleasing conclusion.

MAASTRICHT CONCERT: LOVE IS ALL AROUND

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING, PART ONE (12A)

This latest and longest (and longest titled!) of Tom Cruise’s world-saving exploits also involves him and his regular cohort (an ever-more portly Ving Rhames and ever twitchier Simon Pegg) searching for two halves of something that could destroy mankind if it gets into the wrong hands, namely an interlocking key. The wrong hands are those of cyber terrorist Gabriel (Esai Morales) aided by an ultra violent white widow (Vanessa Kirby) both of them competing with Hayley Mills’ master – mistress? – thief. Rebecca Ferguson also reprises her role as MI6 agent Ilsa Faust from MI’s ROGUE NATION and FALLOUT and between them we get a series of ever-more frantic, if almost implausible chases including, as in DIAL OF DESTINY, a nail-biting battle atop a speeding train. Director/co-writer Christopher McQuarrie’s third turn at the helm proves that he understands what audiences want from the BOURNE, BOND and MI oeuvres and delivers it with exactly the right amount of tension, gravitas and confidence.
