Part Time Courses

Care & Childhood Studies at Arthur Mee Centre

Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (CACHE Level 2) learners working in roles that support pupils’ learning including teaching assistants, learning support assistants and special needs assistants. The course consists of a number of mandatory and optional units which cover a range of subject areas of working in schools such as Child development, Health and safety, Safeguarding children, Positive behaviour, Supporting learning activities and others. A guidance interview is required before enrolment. Completion of a placement for a minimum of two days per week in a school for one year is required; this can be between Foundation and Year 11 (Key Stage 4). While in school it is valuable to have a Mentor/Supervisor. An enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check will need to be applied for before commencement in the school placement. Literacy and numeracy assessments will be completed prior to starting on the course; individuals need to be working at a minimum of Level 1.

All units are assessed mainly by observation of work place practice by an assessor. Additional evidence will be gained by verbal and/or written questioning to confirm skills and knowledge of workplace practice and procedures along with Witness Testimonies from workplace supervisors. Additional written tasks may be required to confirm sound knowledge and understanding of some aspects of the qualification. The evidence of assessments confirming competence of practice will compiled within an e-portfolio with contributions from both student and assessor.

This one year course develops the skills and knowledge to work in a variety of Early Years settings under supervision and covers units such as Children and Play, The Developing Child and Play Activities. Learners are assessed through coursework, a multiple choice exam and a portfolio of evidence from placements. Entry qualifications-4 GCSEs grade D or above including English Language and a clear CRB.

This 2 year course prepares learners to work unsupervised or in a supervisory role in a variety of Early Years settings and covers 12 units which include Child Development from 0-16, Keeping Children Safe, Caring for Children and Play and Learning. You will be assessed through written assignments, a research project plus your performance in the work place Entry qualifications-5 GCSEs grade C or above including English Language plus a clear CRB.

(CACHE Level 1) This one year course is aimed at young people needing to develop life skills and their understanding of the skills and knowledge needed to care for young children. It includes units such as Children’s development, Health and Safety and Supporting babies to play. It will also include personal and social development skills and units, plus functional skills in English Language, Maths and ICT which are essential for further study and employment. There may be opportunities for students to attend childcare placements whilst on this course but this will be dependent on attitude and performance whilst on the course.
