Welcome!

FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Hello and welcome to another exciting year with Miss Virginia Volunteer! Tonight we are here to cheer on this extraordinary and diverse group of young women and celebrate their backgrounds, talents, experiences, and abilities!

I am grateful and humbled to be the Executive Director of the Miss Virginia Volunteer program. I am so thankful for the many wonderful people who have come alongside me and for all the support and encouragement we've received from the community. I feel so blessed for the opportunity to mentor these young women — from our precious Princesses to our blossoming Teens all the way to our show-stopping Misses — and my desire is to give insight to their abilities, to showcase their unique personalities, to raise awareness of their personal platforms, to teach them the importance of volunteerism, and to show them that crowns can lead to careers!

By providing scholarships and educational opportunities, my hope is that these talented and committed young women will use their status and experience to make a difference in their communities through their social platforms and personal and professional lives. I believe that each contestant can — and will —change the world! Now, all eyes are on these incredible young women as they take the stage tonight, and I am so proud of them for so beautifully representing Virginia and all that we stand for. As we celebrate each outstanding moment tonight, let us all continue to share in the spirit of generosity, sisterhood, and community!

ALL MY LOVE,

Annie Mowery

A Annie MOWERY

MISS VIRGINIA VOLUNTEER 2024

I wanted to leave my legacy as a "people’s princess."

t a very young age, I fell in love with Virginia. I grew up visiting Colonial Williamsburg every year and every year I begged to go “home.” Virginia has long been my home, my place to run to when I needed to feel safe, long before I ever had a physical address here. It was the honor of a lifetime to wear Virginia across my chest and represent a place filled with such diverse people and places. Thank you for the great privilege to represent this beautiful and historic state. It has been a dream.

Recently, I told a friend of mine that I needed this role as Miss Virginia Volunteer far more than it needed me. When I won this title, this was not something I had realized yet. Throughout my year as Miss Virginia Volunteer, I have realized that my power was within me all along. Being Miss Virginia Volunteer taught me that all I have to be is myself and that is enough. During my year, I latched onto the words of Princess Diana. I realized I wanted to leave my legacy as a “people’s princess.” Crown or no crown I wanted people to feel seen and loved. This was a year about finding “Annie.” While I didn’t feel ready for this title, it was ready for me.

For those of you who know me, you know of my love for iconic American legend and the father of the Navy, John Paul Jones. As a victim of domestic violence, hearing his famous quote, “I have not yet begun to fight,” on the show Liberty’s Kids as a little girl changed the trajectory of my life as a survivor. I have held onto those words so tightly throughout my life, that it has become the way I live it. No matter what has happened to me, what obstacle placed in my path, I knew that I could overcome it. Using my voice and my story as Miss Virginia Volunteer was the final piece in my healing puzzle. I would have never thought that a crown, placed on my head, would give me the strength to share my story and use it to help other women.

To the Runk Family, thank you for everything you have done not only for me, but this entire organization. From the late-night chats, to trying on a million dresses for nationals, thank you for welcoming me with open arms into your family. You truly treat every young woman who steps into this role like a princess, and I am forever grateful for your generosity and your support. Thank you for making my dreams a reality and encouraging me to embrace the power of my story.

A Queen'sFarewell

"EVERY GIRL SHOULD WANT TO BE MISS VIRGINIA VOLUNTEER TO EXPERIENCE THIS JOURNEY"

To the entire MVV board, thank you for all you do for each girl who wears this crown. From throwing the best send off parties to prepping me to step onto the national stage I am so grateful to the love and support you have given me. Every girl should want to be Miss Virginia Volunteer to experience this journey with all of you.

To Thomas and Steven, for being my cheerleaders. You truly moved mountains for me at national’s week and I can never thank you enough. Thomas, your words to me while sitting in the makeup chair every day in Jackson changed the way I look at myself. Win or lose you made me feel like a champion. Throughout this year you have both made me feel and look like a star. The amount of love you poured into me has left an impact on me for life. Thank you for your unending support and friendship.

To Kate, my MVV big sister. My rock this year. I couldn’t have done this year without you. Your impact on this pageant goes beyond your year as Miss Virginia Volunteer. You are an incredible leader and friend. From being my “handler” to picking me up at the airport at midnight you have been by my side through it all. To Mia, the best teen I could ever ask for. I am constantly in awe of your bravery. You inspire me every day. From flying airplanes to placing first runner up at Miss Teen Volunteer America, you can truly do it all. You have the most beautiful heart, and you welcome everyone you meet with open arms. I cannot wait to see what your life has in store for you, I will be cheering you on always.

To Mr. Jim and Ms. Carol, you are the reason I fell in love with this organization. From driving us to rehearsal every day to driving me all the way to nationals. You truly carried me the entirety of my MVV journey. When I think of the love that envelops each Miss Virginia Volunteer, I think of you. Thank you for being there for me through it all.

To every single person who cheered me on from Pennsylvania to Tennessee (*cough* *cough* Jeremy and Logan), to South Dakota and all over Virginia, THANK YOU. The absolute army that has stood behind me this entire year truly astounds me, and I will never be able to thank you enough for all of your kind words and encouragement.

To my family, Lacey, Diane, Joe, Noah, Dylan, Justin, and Donna. Thank you for fixing my crown when it got too heavy, for cheering me on all the way from Lynchburg to Jackson, Tennessee, and for believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself. You are the people behind the crown. I couldn’t be Miss Virginia Volunteer without having all of you right behind me. Thank you for coming along on this once of a lifetime journey with me.

To the next Miss Virginia Volunteer, it is no easier being the fourth than it is being the third. I believe in you, and I know you are going to accomplish so many amazing and beautiful things. You are stepping into a family that loves you and wants you to succeed. I am always a text or call away. Welcome to the family.

And finally, to my Baba. For instilling in me a “take no prisoners” attitude for every goal I have gone after in my life. When I stood backstage the night that I won this title, I heard a little voice in my head tell me that “this is already yours, make it happen.” I knew that that was my grandpa. Thank you for being my guardian angel and my champion in heaven. This was for you.

CULTURE & COMMUNITY A PLACE FOR

The Academy Center of the Arts is Greater Lynchburg’s go-to center for arts, culture, and entertainment. Our mission is to serve our community through year-round programming, children's camps, art classes, gallery events, pottery courses, and of course a calendar filled with exciting events at the newly renovated Academy Theatre!

ABOUT THE HISTORIC ACADEMY THEATRE

The Academy Center of the Arts campus, which encompasses several venues in downtown Lynchburg, is anchored by the Historic Academy of Music Theatre. Originally built in 1905, the Academy was the focal point for entertainment in Lynchburg from the time it opened well into the 1920s. The Academy fell into disrepair and was set to be demolished in the 1960s, until the Friends of the Academy of Music intervened. In 1969, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in hopes the designation would expedite restoration efforts. Eventually, with help from generous donors and the Lynchburg community, the theatre underwent major renovations and restoration efforts from 2015 until it reopened in December 2018 — more than 60 years after it shut its doors to the public. Updates to the 835-seat theatre include state-of-the-art sound and lighting technology, projection screens, and streaming capabilities — all while preserving the 1912-aesthetic that makes this venue a local favorite for theater, music, and quality entertainment!

A Teen's Farewell Mia ANDERSON

MISS VIRGINIA TEEN VOLUNTEER 2024

After my year as Miss Virginia Teen Volunteer, I now understand what it means to have God close one door in order to open another. I can say with certainty that I am in the right place. I never imagined becoming a state title holder, let alone the first runner-up in the Miss Teen Volunteer America pageant. This past year has been incredibly fulfilling in numerous ways. This opportunity allowed me to share my passion with even more people across the state. My SERVE initiative is more than a pageant platform to me. It is a passion. I have always been very active in the aviation community. However, this opportunity allowed me to branch out beyond the aviation community. I was able to “S.O.A.R to my Dreams” more than I ever have this year!

While I wish to acknowledge every person and moment that has contributed to shaping the woman I am today, I know that would be impossible. To everyone who has been involved in my journey to Miss Teen Volunteer America, I say thank you. Thank you to the Miss Virginia Teen Volunteer directors, Kyle and Linda, and the Gudgers, for giving me your absolute all. Your support has been invaluable, and I've never been more prepared to walk into an interview room than I was after working with everyone. You all went above and beyond to make me feel confident and special.

I also want to thank Kate for showing Annie and me how to wear the shoes and the crown that she wore so well. She has been a tremendous asset to this organization and will continue to be for future titleholders. To the sponsors I've created a personal connection with. Thomas and Steven. As you've learned, makeup and hair are not in my skill set, so thank you for making me feel beautiful at every event. It’s been a pleasure getting to know both of you and your beautiful family.

And to Rae for always supporting me, from the girl who was scared to get a tan to now wanting one for every special event. Thank for helping me find my Glo.

Annie, Julia, and Aspen, thank you for being my pageant sisters and teaching me that being myself isn't a bad thing. Because of you, I was able to open up and create dear friendships with a few of the most amazing young women at the national pageant. All three of you are amazing, bright women, and I can't wait to see you change the world.

My biggest thanks go to the Runk Family. Vickie's skill in facilitating a “dream team” of Keith Pittman, Sherri Hill, Bill Wolfe, Lu Sierra, and Cathy Motley-Fitch was incredible in preparing me. The Runks have helped me in so many ways, and I love the conversations with each and every one of them. From pageant talk with Vickie and Caitlyn to conversations about plants with Chris and talking to

Chandler and Bryan about flight simulators, there was always a conversation to be had. They have made feeling a part of their family easy.

Finally, to my family - my mom, for being there with me everywhere I went to support me and for never giving up on being my “momager,” and my dad and brother, who sat through my pageants for me and helped judge my outfits with very little knowledge. Thank you for everything. I love you all!

I want to be remembered for my year and not for my success at the national pageant. I want to be remembered for the person I am and the things I did, crown or not. To the next Miss Virginia Teen Volunteer: You are in for the ride of a lifetime. You will embark on a journey with people who want to help you become the best version of yourself and will stop at nothing to do so. This team is the best team to have, and I am so excited to see what you will do with this opportunity. Don't allow the crown to define you - YOU define the crown.

For one last time, I am your Miss Virginia Teen Volunteer, Mia Anderson.

MISS SPIRIT OF VIRGINIA 2024

AIn January, I was honored to be chosen to carry the title of the first “Miss Spirit of Virginia.” To my delight, it came with an amazingly supportive pageant family, filled with unconditional love, and a time rich with memories, friends, and accomplishments.

Success is always a team sport, and God blessed me with a team to whom I owe immense gratitude. Ms. Vickie, Chris, Caitlyn, and Kate: your dedication of time, energy, and resources has constructed an incredible pageant experience, providing fun and enriching opportunities for each contestant and winner. I know my success as Miss Spirit of Virginia is a testament to your passion for pageantry and the positive impact you have on the lives of each girl in this system. Thank you for the opportunity to partner with the DARE program, which allowed me to meet Deputy Wilson, Sergeant Hall, and the amazing dogs of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Department. Your unwavering support propelled me to compete at Miss Virginia Teen USA as Miss Spirit of Volunteer Teen USA, where I proudly won the coveted title of Miss Virginia Teen USA and my golden ticket to Hollywood. I will never forget the encouragement and support you have given me, and the incredible send-off party as I embarked on my journey to nationals!

To my parents and sisters, thank you for keeping me grounded in authenticity while I pursued my dreams. Your support has been my rock throughout this journey, and now, as I stand in Hollywood, California, at Miss Teen USA, I feel your love and encouragement lifting me higher.

To Annie, Mia, and Aspen, that you for welcoming me into the family and truly treating me as a sister.

To Kari and Brent, thank you for treating me like another one of your children and loving me as you have. I can’t wait for that New York City trip!

To the next Miss Spirit of Virginia, Congratulations on your win! I know you will have a memorable year. You are in for the best ride of your life with the Runk Family and their amazing team. You will truly be blessed!

To anyone who has a dream in their heart or a goal in their mind: Do. Not. Give. Up. Your dreams are valid, work hard, and you are so worthy and capable of bringing those dreams to fruition. No matter what path your journey takes you, remember to Color your World with Kindness. Proverbs 16:24: “Kind words are like honey- sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”

I am forever grateful for the hearts that have opened generously to me, providing the unconditional support and love that made my year magical. I will always cherish the new friendships, major accomplishments, and sentimental moments from my time as Miss Spirit of VA 2024.
