Denver Public Schools 2021 Citywide Elementary Art Exhibition
The 2021 Citywide Elementary Art Exhibition is an annual event featuring elementary school artists, ECE through 6th grade, from across Denver Public Schools. Previously, this exhibition has been hosted by various cultural community partners, including History Colorado and the Denver Art Museum. While we were unable to host an in-person show this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are proud of the work our teachers and students have produced over the past school year! This year’s show features artwork from 22 schools from across the district. There are just over 200 pieces on view, all submitted by our visual arts teachers. In addition to the art, the artist statements are an extension of students’ inspirations, ideas, and art methods. Collectively, the work expresses the resiliency of teachers and students during historically challenging times. This virtual show is a celebration of student art and our learning community. The vision of Denver Public Schools Citywide Arts Events is to broaden students’ individual artistic experiences, exposing them to new and diverse perspectives. Elementary students in the Visual Arts are challenged to explore their ideas and feelings while developing technical and investigative skills in art. This year’s artwork provides a unique glimpse into students’ creative processes outside of the classroom. Much of this art was created and documented by students during remote learning. Thus, the work is truly authentic to the students who created the artwork and expressive of their voice, choice, and agency in the arts. We are grateful for the support of the Arts and PE Department for all Citywide events. Thank you to Alexandria Jimenez for lending us her substantial design skills in the creation of this exhibition catalogue. And finally, a big thank you to all our participating schools for taking part in this long-standing DPS tradition! We couldn’t do it without our dedicated arts teachers and students.

Adrianna E, 3rd grade, Mango the Tropical Bird
Adrianna E, 3rd grade, Sir Peacock Artist is Adrianna E. She is in 3rd grade at Bryant Webster Elementary. Her inspiration was a video from YouTube and that her mother loves birds. It took Adrianna about 1 to 2 hours. She used a pencil to outline the lines of the toucan and leaves and then finished with oil pastels. She has a challenge with the leaves because they were difficult to draw and color because there were so many of them and they took awhile. Adrianna is interesting because she loves animals and art. Mango the toucan bird loves to eat mangos and to relax in the rainforest. Making art in Seesaw is kind of hard for Adrianna but she uses Seesaw to take a picture of her artwork that she makes on paper.
My name is Vicente and my movie is called "Planeta de autos" or "Car Planet". I was inspired because I like "How to Train Your Dragon". And I like HotWheels, so I wanted to do a stop-motion movie with my HotWheels. The hardest part was to make the origami dragon. I worked with my mom to make it and then I colored it. It was fun to make the movie. I hope people enjoy my story. And I like Ms.Viders' art class because I like drawing a lot with my family.
Vicente C, 1st Grade, Planeta De Autos
Santiago C, 3rd grade, La Carrera Loca My name is Santiago and my movie is called "La carrera loca" or "The Crazy Race". What inspired me was the idea that what happens is not always what you think will happen and that new things aren't always better than old things. I thought that the Beetle Car could win the race by taking his time. I hope people watch my movie and feel inspired to follow their dreams. Making this movie was really fun, especially moving the HotWheel cars and building the mini-LEGO props. And I like to be in art class with Ms. Viders because I get to learn how to make and draw things and I get better at drawing.

Monte is determined to finish a project once it is started and steps up to every art challenge thrown his way. His persistence and grit make him stand out as such a positive role model for others!
Yareli P, 2nd grade, My lego self-portrait Inspired by a Frida Kahlo lego character, second graders were asked to draw themselves as a lego. They were challenged to include something that made them happy just like Frida and her animals. When asked about her artwork, Yareli replied "I included butterflies because I love them!" In every single artwork she creates, Yareli's effort and attention to details shows!
Estefany C, 3rd grade, My 3D Cube When asked about the challenge of three-dimensional art, Estefany replied "Building 3D is a little hard at first!" However, no challenge is too much for her. After adding her own designs, Estefany used her problem solving skills to "score" the lines to get crisp, straight folds. We might have a future architect here!
Uriel B, 2nd grade, Magic Balloon Dog After taking a "virtual field trip" to look at Public Art Sculptures, students were given the challenge to use any materials available to you. Create a sculpture of something you'd like to see here in Denver. Uriel created this paper sculpture on his own with just scissors, paper and marker! He cut slits to carefully fit the pieces together after being inspired by Jeff Koons Balloon Dog Sculpture.
Alyson CC, 1st grade grade, Ice Ice Ic ce Cream! Crreea Cr eam am! m! First graders were asked "If you had a food truck, what would you sell?" They shared ideas about bright colors attracting customers, large words to see from far away, listing prices and menus for goods and details their truck would have to get attention. Alyson's shading on the windows, attention to neatness and ideas showed how much time and thought she put into her art.
Genessis G, 1st grade, My M Br BBracelet rac ra ace cel ele let et Genesis When asked to share her thoughts on this challenge of using a loom to weave, Genesis replied "I like to weave. It's fun. I made my bracelet for memories from this school." Students made circular cardboard looms and seven colors of string. They learned a rhyme that helped create the woven pattern. "Empty space points to me. Take my hand and count to three."
William G, 4th grade, For My Grandma
Veanney N, 5th grade, Metal Art
When asked about this project, William told us that he created his art in honor of his grandma. Students were challenged to not only create art to practice techniques, but to create art with meaning so that they personally connected to it. William created this colorful artwork that has so much meaning and is so special to him... a true piece of art!
Challenged to create a relief sculpture using aluminum, Veanney jumped at the chance to try something new! Not only did she push the limits on the height of stretching her metal, but she independently explored ways to add color to her personal artwork, inspiring others to take risks as well.
Aylin R, 5th grade, Self-Portrait Looking at the many self-portraits completed by Frida Kahlo, students were challenged to create their own as a lego. Aylin included the bird and leaves just like Kahlo included nature and animals to show what makes her happy. Aylin's style comes through in this artwork!
Iker A, 1st grade, Party! Fiesta! First graders explored building "tiny sculptures" with model magic. Students were given the option to create anything they wanted and use marker to add detail. Iker decided to split his model magic up and create three! When asked what he would title his donut and cupcake art, he did not hesitate.... "Party! Fiesta!"

Aaiden M, 5th grade, There’s a lot of things going on in my head most of the day. When I speak the words without thinking they come out like a deformed turtle with a stutter problem. I am an atheist, I am not Christian nor am I in any religion. I put spotify and the guitar because I really like music and I play guitar, Music is my love language because I don't know how to express myself other than music, I grew up listening to music to shut out my problems and to help me with my anxiety. Acting is a big part of my life that's why I put the theatre symbol. Anxiety has basically ruled me for my entire life. It has stopped me from doing things I always wanted to like speaking in front of big groups.
Tlazohtzin C, 3rd grade, My family participates in the Dia De Los Muertos celebration at school.
Norah M, 5th grade, I chose blue tissue paper as it is proven to improve mental health. I chose to put flowers as I have very specific memories of them. I put a dancer because dancing is one of my hobbies, as well as astrology. Astrology has helped me with many things. I put pages of a book because when I’m reading a book it makes me feel like I’m in a different life. I put a sunset because I find them calming. Butterflies because they remind me of a feeling that I like. I also put words because they have meanings that I like.

Hailey G, 5th grade, This is Me
My artwork is basically a sunset, but it looks like the sun is melting into the sea. This was inspired by the pretty sunsets in Bangladesh. My favorite part of creating this artwork was coloring the drawing. I learned that blending colored pencils is really hard. One change I would make is that I would not add the boat because I feel like it would look better without it. I would try adding the reflection differently because it doesn’t really look like a reflection.
I call this artwork “This is Me.” The objects in the artwork represent what I like to do, and what makes me, me! I love to sing and I really love to doing art. I like to draw anime. Watching anime inspired me to create this style of art. The Roblox symbol represents the fact that I love to game, as well.
Ava L, 5th grade, The Endless Bridge I chose to make this art piece because of everything that has happened to me this year and will in the year to come. A lot happened last year and I have made it. Last year had so many ups and downs, but I made it through. When anyone sees my work I want them to know, that even after the lowest points in life, you will always make it through. This is not only the meaning behind my art, but the meaning behind my quote; "After the rain, there's always a rainbow."

Sienna B, 4th Grade, Close To Me
Coltrane S, 3rd Grade, The Poles I made this art piece with a website called jacksonpollock.org. My experience at the beginning, I didn’t know what I was going to make but I just kept working on it and eventually I figured out what I was going to do. I got inspired by one of Jackson Pollock’s paintings. I just moved the mouse and changed colors for the background until I figured out what I was going to make.
My name is Sienna and I am a student at Escuela Valdez. This is my heart map. As you may have guessed this art piece is shaped as a heart. In the inside of the heart there are many things that I enjoy or things that I love. I call this art piece, Close To Me. To create this amazing art piece I used simple materials that include paper, colored pencils, and scissors. The techniques and processes that I used were soft strokes, loose hands, and a variety of color. I was inspired by my family, my friends Emogene and Dorothea, as well as all of my other friends. My goal as an artist is to auction off my art to raise money to help schools, little towns, small businesses, and much more. In creating this artwork I found that there were many things that I love. I am happy to say that this artwork is just what I imagined it to be.
Izabella M, 4th Grade, Color Blossoms Mia C, 2nd Grade, I See You
I named this piece color blossoms. How I made this piece is by using a lot of colors and using the colors freely. I enjoyed making this piece because it was very relaxing and I enjoyed using all the colors.
Yareni Z, 5th Grade, Frida
Hazel E, Kindergarten, Apple in my Face Rosemary O, 3rd grade, The Dream The dream of my art is the cat I found who has the same spirit as me. Something you should know about me as the artist is that for my dream world I did not know where to start so I just let my imagination be free. The colors are bright just like my imagination.
Noe S, 5th Grade, Autumn Butterfly My leaf butterfly connects to my love of autumn. I made it out of ash leaves and dogwood berries, also dandelion and hydrangea petals. I also used sticks and willow shrub leaves.
Kristina Barboza, Valverde Elementary
Natalia G, 4th grade, The King of The Heights I chose this title because I believe that giraffes are the tallest animals to exist. I drew a crown because I got inspired by the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, who we learned about in class. What I like the most about my artwork is how colorful and complex it is.
Clara B, 4th grade, Positive Work I chose this title because affirmation helps me focus on the positive things that I have in my life. I enjoyed making this art piece because I worked really hard on it and the work paid off because I like the background colors I chose. I like how I mixed the white with yellow to make the color of the giraffe. I chose the giraffe because they are calm and patient animals. In art class we were learning how art does not have to be perfect. Right now life is a little bit challenging and I like to tell myself positive things like life is good, you are smart, be kind, and be a good person. I also chose the affirmation “life is good” because I was reflecting that as a child I don't have responsibilities and I should enjoy life, have fun and play.
Mariam L, 5th Grade, The Doggy What I like about my artwork is I tried my best. My art reminds me of my old dog. If people are feeling sad, I hope my art makes you feel happy.
Grecia T, 4th grade, Nature I chose this title because I love nature, and giraffes always remind me of nature. I like my artwork because it has something that not all artworks have, it has my style and although it is not perfect, it is my style. That means that the artwork has something of me that is my creativity, also my artwork has my design although not professional or perfect, that design represents me, Grecia.
Alondra R, 5th grade, Sharp Fire What I like about my artwork is the newspaper photos I added to it. I also like the blending of the oil pastels.
Miguel P, 1st grade, Pay Attention Miguel What I like about my artwork is that it reminds me when my teacher wants us to pay attention and get ready for learning she says Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! This painting reminds me to stay focused and be ready to learn.
Levi C, 1st grade, Levi's Letters in the Sky What I like about my artwork is that the boy is looking up at the palm tree and the letters are mixed up. Chicka Boom-Bet!
