MAINTAINING
MOMENTUM
Running into 2025 has its opportunities and challenges for specialty retailers.
By Beth Goldstein, Executive Director, Industry Advisor, Footwear and Accessories, Circana
The U.S. market for running footwear has been enjoying a good – well, for lack of a better or more appropriate term – run, despite macroeconomic challenges that continue to pressure consumer spending on footwear overall. A look at the numbers supports that claim.
In 2024, U.S. adult total footwear dollar sales are flat through August,
compared to the same period last year, but sales of adult running footwear are up five percent, to $4.7 billion, which is 25 percent above pre-pandemic 2019 levels — whereas the rest of the footwear market grew 13 percent since 2019. Price growth has been the main driver of these results, as demand for premium-priced brands and items have sent the average selling price for running footwear up 38
percent in the past five years.1
The rate of price growth in running footwear is expected to slow in the coming years as mix shifts among brands normalize, according to Circana’s Future of Footwear study. Therefore, to keep up the revenue momentum, the industry will also need to sell more product. To that end, here are three areas of focus for brands and retailers as we head into 2025:
SUPERBLAST ™ 2
Maintaining Momentum (continued)
1. Prioritize Innovation
Much like the sport itself, the performance running footwear category has always been competitive, with several brands battling for share. But in the past few years, this race has intensified.
In 2024, the top five brands are generating three-quarters of the dollar sales in the market, similar to three years ago, but the share mix has changed: the top three brands now account for a smaller proportion of the sales and the fourth and fifth ranked brands are accounting for a larger piece.
This increased competition has brought innovation to the forefront and brands have ramped up their efforts to evolve key franchises and launch new ones. This strategy has paid off, with the percentage of sales driven by items launched in the current year steadily increasing since 2022.2 Major brands and retailers can’t slow down their pace here if they want to remain at the head of the pack, as new and emerging brands will continue to nip at their heels.
2. Retain Your Buyers
Innovation has become particularly important for customer retention. In this highly competitive environment, brand loyalty is the gold medal.
In recent years smaller, emerging brands have grown more quickly than the overall buyer base for running footwear. While all brands and retailers will lose customers from year-to-year, the goal is always to overcompensate for those by attracting new buyers. But it is also important not to let your retention efforts fall behind because retained consumers are the most valuable.
In the running footwear category during the past 12 months ending August 2024, retained buyers represented just over 30 percent of total buyers, and almost 40 percent of dollar sales, led by higher purchase frequency, more units purchased and higher average prices per purchase.3
New product, marketing, community, promotions and rewards programs are all levers that can be pulled to keep your
customers coming back year after year — or even more frequently.
3. Embrace the Casual Consumer
During the 12 months ending August 2024, more than 40 percent of dollar sales in the performance running footwear category was generated by consumers intending to use their shoes for athletic, sport or exercise purposes. This percentage is consistent with last year, but down three percentage points compared to four years ago.
On the flip side, just under 60 percent of sales are attributed to non-athletic uses, mainly casual or everyday use, weekend social or recreational activity and work.1
So, while performance is paramount, ignoring the more casual consumer that is simply looking for comfort and versatility will leave money on the shelf.
As function has become fashion in recent years, the running industry is presented with a unique opportunity to

serve many usage occasions, which can benefit runningfocused brands and retailers as well as retailers that serve a broader audience. But it’s all in the messaging — be sure to play up features and benefits and how they align with your consumers’ lifestyles and priorities, whether that be logging miles, running races, hitting the trails or just tackling everyday hurdles.
As we cross the 2024 finish line and approach the 2025 starting block, the running industry is in a strong position.
Circana is projecting continued growth in 2025 fueled not only by higher prices, but also a return to unit growth. To make this a reality, brands and retail leaders can consider the strategies laid out above to ensure the industry stays on track. n

Collective Effort
With the addition of seven members, The Run Collective retail group has an eye on bolstering independent running retail as it expands its membership. /
By Danny Smith
Run Collective has entered its next phase of growth.
The upstart group of running retailers with a focus on driving the long-term prosperity of independent run speciality recently added seven new members. The additions push Run Collective’s retail roster to 19.
“It’s largely been baby steps to this point, but the time was right to take this next step in our growth and add these seven new members so we can continue to learn and strengthen our work,” says Run Collective executive director John Benedict, the former coowner of Playmakers in Okemos, MI.
Years in the Making
Founded in 2022, Run Collective models itself after the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance (GOA), a retailer-owned network of 95 independent outdoor retailers and 67 vendor partners working together for the health and growth of specialty outdoor retail through data sharing, education, buying opportunities, community events, advocacy and more.
As a member of Playmakers’ leadership team, Benedict experienced GOA benefits firsthand and was interested in formulating something similar in run specialty. In conversations with other running retailers at vendor and industry gatherings such as The Running Event, Benedict found others similarly intrigued.
“Buying groups in many industries are often thought of as hammers, but I saw nothing like that with the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance,” he says. “Instead, I
saw brands and retailers working together with passion to protect specialty retail.”
After more than a decade of talk, Benedict leveraged newfound time and freedom courtesy of his 2021 retirement from Playmakers to investigate a GOAlike organization in run specialty. He queried GOA leadership about what they learned over their 25 years in operation and began defining the parameters of a run specialty-oriented buying group alongside a few of the idea’s most ardent supporters.
In 2023, a dozen running retailers
committed to join Run Collective. The founding 12 incorporated to legally act as a buying group, agreed to dues and tabbed Benedict as the founding executive director.
“When you get great retailers together, good things are going to happen,” Benedict says. “That’s what had us motivated to get this off the ground.”
Clear Objectives
Run Collective stands on three pillars: leveraging group buying power, sharing best practices to fuel retail performance
Collective Effort (continued)
and contributing to the overall progress of run specialty retail. While the buying group piece is rather straightforward, Run Collective has slowly solidified its efforts in the other two areas, leaning on a monthly ownership call as well as in-person meetings at The Running Event and RIA Summit to gather perspective, share direction and propel unified movement.
To drive the performance of members’ respective businesses, Run Collective has a Slack channel devoted to idea sharing as well as four retailerled subgroups – buying, human resources, operations and marketing – to help its members tackle some of the heaviest challenges facing run specialty.
To be an agent of change in the larger run specialty retail marketplace, Run Collective has issued position papers –a September 2022 paper, for instance, addressed inequities, unfairness and confusion in one footwear vendor’s product resale and trade-in program –and members have assumed key roles in other industry groups. Benedict and Chris Lampen-Crowell of Michiganbased Gazelle Sports, for example, are active with the Running Industry Diversity Coalition, while Kathy Dalby of Pacers has helped amplify the female perspective in run specialty as a leader with empowerun.
“A foremost goal of ours is to make sure run specialty is progressing and focused on solutions and improvement,” Benedict says, careful to add that Run Collective is an ally of, not a competitor to, the
nonprofit Running Industry Association (RIA). In fact, all members of Run Collective must be RIA members.
“We want a strong trade channel and strong independent retailers inside and outside of Run Collective,” Benedict assures.
Marching Ahead
While Run Collective launched two years ago with 12 members, thoughtful expansion was a target once the group worked out early kinks.
“But to grow, we first had to be in a position to add value for members and know how we could best do that,” Benedict says.
Jeff Metzdorff, co-owner of Mill City Running and Saint City Running in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, was aware of Run Collective’s founding and tracked its early evolution through conversations with some of the original 12 members. As the group’s operations and activities became more dialed in, Metzdorff welcomed the opportunity to join Run Collective’s first wave of expansion. He’s particularly eager to learn from the collective’s other 18 members about ways he can strengthen his 11-year-old business.
“As a small business, our biggest deficiencies are in the back at the house, so I’m excited to glean insights from the others and improve what we do because we want to be a great retailer and a great overall employer,” Metzdorff says.
Admittedly, Benedict says, growth brings both benefits (added buying power,

Get ‘MOTO’-vated
Video content and in-store digital signage are only the start with #TRE24 video partner MOTOTV.
Once again the crew from MOTOTV will be on the show floor at The Running Event in Austin, TX, this month to document all the excitement and highlights of the three most important days on the run specialty calendar. Running Insight caught up with Mary Winter Reed, brand account director at MOTOTV (mototvnetwork.com) to get a look inside the process and what MOTOTV can bring to the floor at run specialty shops.
Running Insight: First, how about an “elevator pitch” of who MOTOTV is and what you do.
Mary Winter Reed: We’re a group of avid adventure, fitness and powersports fanatics with marketing, creative and ad agency backgrounds. We saw a gap in the purchase funnel across retailers and solved it by “Educating and Entertaining” customers at the point-of-sale. Our Custom In-Store Digital Signage Networks help retailers sell more products by playing video content from the brands that the stores carry so they have consistent messaging from research to purchase, all while increasing basket size.
Anything else?
We don’t just sell you some hardware and walk away. We actively manage the content for you and continually refresh brand and lifestyle videos. We also provide a ton of builtin tools that let stores customize their own video or photo content, tie in their social media, type in messaging and really customize it to their store. We like to say “We help MOTO-vate the Sale.”
Very clever, but you can leave the puns to us. With that in mind, what type of product/service does MOTOTV provide to run specialty retailers?
MOTOTV gives specialty run retailers a customizable platform to constantly be advertising at the pointof-sale. Our active video network draws attention to their products, events and sales messages. And because the content is constantly updated, it keeps the store atmosphere alive with current content and reinforces customer confidence. When customers are excited and confident, they’re ready to buy more.
So what is your sales pitch to our readers to get involved with MOTOTV?
Try us for free! Do you have a blank TV in your store that you only turn on for an occasional race? Simply plug in our media player, connect it to WiFi and put that precious wall space to use. We inform, educate and entertain.
Sounds simple.
We know people come to specialty run stores for the excellent and individualized service. And sometimes that service comes with a wait — whether they’re waiting their turn or waiting while you go grab shoes from the back. Our active network helps reduce that perceived wait time while also keeping your customers engaged. Instead of distracting them with a TV show or old races, you can keep them in buying mode by showing them the latest videos from the brands you carry and keeping them informed on everything happening at your store.
And the brands like it?
It’s a win for the brands you carry since MOTOTV delivers that consistent tone and brand promise right to your customers, right where they’re ready to buy.
What is the benefit for retailers to have MOTOTV in their stores?
Increased sales to start with because
A Run With MOTOTV (continued)
an educated customer is your best customer. You always want the shopping experience to be positive and we believe MOTOTV helps by keeping customers engaged. We have also noticed, because we are constantly playing fresh content from the brands the stores sell, that employees get an education as well.
What is the investment in time to get started?
Because we actively manage all of the content, your time investment is minimal. You simply plug our proprietary Media Player into your TV and get it online. From there you can either set it and forget it, or you can use our super simple dashboard to make all of the customizable updates you’d like. You can also select or de-select brands in the dashboard so that the content on your screens is only for the brands you carry in store.
And the cost?
Between the Media Player and the subscription, it’s as little as $39.99 to get started. We are offering a TRE Show Special with huge discounts on the monthly subscription and a 60-Day Free Trial when you sign up at the show. The cost of the subscription covers content management, customer support, promo library, custom tools and backend technology to keep the network active.
What success stories have you had in run specialty?
Run specialty stores have loved MOTOTV because they get all of that brand content, with the ability to feature what makes their own stores special and unique. We’ve seen that our Menu Board is a best seller because stores like to use the Menu feature as a message board to easily put up store events, run club info, etc. You can even post times from the last race. We have revamped it to better fit that purpose for specialty run.
What would an ideal MOTOTV set-up be in a store — hardware, content, positioning, etc.?
Customers are trained to look for screens in their shopping experience as it grounds them to the experience and reinforces their previous browsing or research. We like to recommend 55-inch, or bigger, screen to pull them away from their phones. It should be somewhere highly visible where there may be some downtime, like the shoe fitting area or a high-traffic wall. We do sell commercial grade LG monitors that our software can even power on and off based on store hours. But we also look great on low-price consumer grade TVs.
What are your plans for The Running Event this year?
We have come up with an incredible introductory price for TRE. Just $39.99 to get started with MOTOTV and start educating your
“MOTOTV has been a game-changer for our in-store marketing. Its user-friendly interface makes it a breeze to update with the latest brand content and our own custom content. Our customers love seeing information about upcoming races, trail runs and promotions while they shop. If you’re looking for a way to connect with your customers, promote your brand and drive sales, MOTOTV is a wonderful solution.” —Dan Medved, Medved Running & Walking Outfitters, Rochester, NY
customers on everything a retailer sells. Also, we’re working to connect more closely with more running brands so they understand the impact our screens have in-store. We can run playback reports and brands are astounded at how many times their videos will play per day in a store.
Finally, what are MOTOTV’s goals for the remainder of 2024 and into 2025?
We believe the speciality running store vertical is the next to break out and use in-store digital signage to
its fullest potential. There is so much to inform a walk-in customer on, whether it be a store’s latest running event to sign up for, the newest shoe available or latest running news to keep your customer in the running frame of mind. As we have done with other verticals, we would eventually like to partner with brands to create additional custom solutions, including touch screens, to motivate the sales process.
OK, we’ll see you in Austin. You certainly will. We will be the ones with the big camera. n

Meet San Antonio
The new host city is ready to welcome The Running Event 2025. / By Genae Salinas
As The Running Event kicks off its final (for now) year in Austin, TX, we want to share a preview of the event’s future home — right down the road in San Antonio.
During the first week of October, The Running Event (TRE) team headed down to San Antonio, joined by representatives from run specialty brands, retailers, media and organizations. Our team used the visit to explore San Antonio — and to show why the Alamo City was selected as host for TRE and Switchback at TRE 2025.
Over the last few months, many people have asked us, “Why San Antonio?” It’s a great question — and one we’re excited to answer.
From the moment our search for TRE’s new home began, San Antonio welcomed the event with open arms. They’re excited to host us, proud to host us and we know everyone will feel that support and energy the moment they arrive at TRE 2025. The city is big enough to hold the event, but small enough for our community to “take over” during TRE.
It’s walkable, it’s runnable — the weather will be perfect in late fall, the food is delicious and the community is vibrant. It’s centrally located, the airport is a quick ride into downtown and the hotels are convenient and comfortable. San Antonio gives us room to grow and opportunity to innovate.
So, let’s dive in.
TRE 2025 will take place at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, located right on the riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. Entering the building, you’re greeted by a large, modern lobby area that will lead attendees to event registration and then directly into the exhibit hall. Speaking of the hall, the 2025 event has
plenty of room to grow, with three halls spanning more than 365,000-square feet available for exhibiting brands.
The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center offers space and improved logistics for everything from educational sessions to special events and gatherings. Conference sessions, the Welcome Reception, Industry Awards Dinner and brand meeting rooms will all be located within the Convention Center.
One sneak peek we’ll give away now: The Welcome Reception will take place in an area called The Grotto — an outdoor venue outside of the Convention Center that sits right on the San Antonio River.
When it comes to hotels, there are plenty of options, including the Marriot River Center, Grand Hyatt and the Hilton Palacio del Rio. While everyone has come to know the Hilton Austin as being the “place to stay” at TRE, San Antonio offers multiple hotels for attendees and exhibitors — all of which are within steps of the Convention Center.
As far as the city itself goes – the seventh largest city in the U.S., in fact – San Antonio is vibrant, welcoming and unique, with Hispanic heritage at the core of everything it offers. I recommend learning more about the history of San Antonio, as it’s foundational to the city’s inherent pride and individuality.
Most are familiar with the city’s Riverwalk, Paseo del Rio – a 15-mile stretch of pathway running along the river, lined with shops, restaurants, bars and much more. Each TRE hotel sits on the Riverwalk, as does the Convention Center, making it easy to grab food, a drink and, of course, go for a run.
You’ll definitely want to swing by the Alamo: a UNESCO World Heritage Site and once a Spanish mission, this San Antonio landmark was the site of a pivotal battle during the Texas Revolution. The city also offers an abundance of arts and culture, outdoor activities, tours and more.
While our team was visiting, we ate at Bombay Bicycle Club, Casa Rio, Dough Pizzeria and grabbed some drinks on the rooftop bar 1Watson.
Fun San Antonio food fact: the city is home to one of five Culinary Institute of America campuses in the world. In fact, UNESCO designated San Antonio a Creative City of Gastronomy in 2017, marking the city as an international culinary destination.
One unique-to-San Antonio activity is taking a boat ride on the river. It’s perhaps the best way to see the city – there
are guided tours available as well – and it’s a fun option for a small team gathering. You can even enjoy a dinner or happy hour during the ride!
And as far as running goes, rest assured there are plenty of routes to run throughout San Antonio. Of course, the Riverwalk makes for a great
run with beautiful city views, but there’s even more to see. Greatruns.com has many suggestions and our team will be sure to share routes ahead of TRE 2025.
San Antonio has certainly welcomed TRE with open arms.
“At first, we thought the search for a new home would be really difficult,” says Christina Henderson, TRE event director. “And while moving to a new city takes a lot of planning and work, the decision ended up being an easy one.
“We’re so excited to bring The Running Event to life in San Antonio and I can’t
TRE event director Christina Henderson is eager to welcome attendees to San Antonio in 2025 following the event’s final year (for now) in Austin this month.
wait for TRE’s community to experience this city and everything it has to offer,” she adds. And finally, we can’t write a piece about San Antonio without mentioning Austin — the city that has been home to TRE over the last many years. While we are sad to be leaving as the Austin Convention Center undergoes a major renovation for the next few years, we remain grateful for the Austin community and everything it has given not only to TRE, but to the running industry as a whole.
During TRE’s first year in Austin, there were less than 30 exhibitors. In 2023, we welcomed 314 exhibiting brands and more than 4050 total industry members — and the 2024 event promises even more growth. Austin has shaped The Running Event and we’re proud to call the city home one more time. n
